of the same suspect. someone who sneaks up behind you and uses some sort of club to beat you in the head,for no particular reason. and that somebody, that suspect, he's still out there. >> we have no obvious indication of any motive for any of the cases. >> reporter: 6:00 p.m. tuesday night, a 66-year-old white man, beaten in the head in the alley in the 800 block of emerson street northwest. he dies at the scene. 3:00 a.m. wednesday morning, nine hours later, about two blocks away, at georgia avenue and emerson street, northwest, a 53-year-old african american man beaten in the head. he's in critical condition. 8:40 p.m. wednesday night, 9th and longfellow streets northwest, a 37-year-old african american woman beaten in the

head. she, too, remains in the hospital. >> all three of these incidents occurred within a ten block radius along the georgia avenue corridor and northwest. it appears preliminarily all three of the victims may have been walking alone at the time of the attack. >> the first of the victims, the man who was killed, 66-year-old gary dederichs, a tourist from denver, colorado. he had been sight-seeing in washington for about two weeks. sources say during his stay in washington, gary dederichs was renting a basement apartment at this home on illinois avenue. the only way in, the only way out, through the back and through this gate in the fence. which leads to this alley. and it was over there next to the garage where he was murdered. police have been doing all sorts of things in the neighborhood, trying to locate a suspect in

this case. today they were looking at security camera video along georgia avenue, hoping that might lead them to a suspect. they are doing everything they can. >> the mere possibility that we may have three incidents that could be linked has got us looking at anything and everything that we think may be relevant. >> reporter: a warning tonight for people in petworth, people in brightwood, don't walk alone, and if you see something suspicious, call 911. in that neighborhood tonight, our jackie benson has more. >> reporter: pat there is something going on, that yellow house those are officers from the uniformed branch of the secret service, according to the crime scene investigation truck, they brought here, no less five minutes ago, this is the area where one of the attacks that police believe are possibly connected occurred last night. this is where the 37-year-old woman was walking on the street.

this is the 5600 block of 9th street northwest. i do not know what those officers are doing over there right now, but the vehicle they arrived in did say "uniformed secret service crime scene investigation." there are extra heavy d.c. police patrols in the area, both uniformed and plain clothes officers. petworth rest deniaidents is co, fearful is not too strong of a word especially the random aspect of the crimes. there are no common threads among the victims, male and female, black and white, between 37 and 66 years old. now the only thing they do have in common is that they were walking alone in the petworth area and were attacked suddenly and randomly and brutally. >> you have to be careful, watch your step out here. you're in the wrong place at the wrong time, anything can happen. >> for the most part this neighborhood on this block, in this street feel there is a lot

of families, feel like there is a bit of community and you don't -- i certainly don't feel unsafe. >> reporter: now i'll read a little bit this is from the prince of petworth blog, a man who has a reputation for keeping close ties in the city. we knew we weren't supposed to walk late at night after the bars let out never with the phones or ipod pods or hold ipads, now we need the buddy system at 6:00 p.m. in an otherwise busy neighborhood to stay alive and another person writes not leaving the house, not going to do it. jackie benson, back to you. national security officials are taking a look at the possibility of threats linked to the anniversary of the death of osama bin laden. on tuesday, may 1st, that will mark the one-year anniversary of the u.s. raid in pakistan that killed the leader of the al qaeda terror network. white house officials say there

is no credible information that al qaeda is planning attacks in the u.s. to coincide with the anniversary. but the fbi and homeland security officials say there may be an increased danger of a so-called lone wolf attack. and the state department is warning u.s. citizens abroad of the possibility of of an increase in anti-american violence. the secret service is now investigating allegations of yet a second prostitution scandal overseas. congressman peter king says the agency is looking into reports that employees hired prostitutes and strippers in el salvador last year. it allegedly happened before the president arrived there for a meeting. a dozen secret service members have been reprimanded for an incident involving prostitutes in columbia earlier this month. we learned a new washington redskins players was arrested to day. brandon merryweather arrested on the suspicion of driving under the influence, happened at 3:00

>> reporter: they admitted they will be taking robert griffin iii. this is the first time they had a quarterback in 27 year since joe theismann broke his leg they can call him a franchise guy. he had 36 touchdown passes last year, ran for another 600 yards. runs the 40 in 4-4. off the field might be better. not only does he say the right things, he does all the right things. he graduated high school ranked seventh in his class in texas. redskins head coach mike shanahan knows there will be growing pains but feels like this kid has the smarts and the personal to make himselfal perfect fit in washington. >> i like the way he handles himself a guy that finished college in three-and-a-half years, came in early out of high school in three-and-a-half years. overachiever, has great parents,

degrees with winds out of the south at 7 miles per hour. some areas have seen sun, martinsburg, currently 71 degrees, was in the 70s in winchester, now seeing the clouds and rain return, right now 68 in manassas. i'll show you how the showers will affect you tonight and what to expect for the tough weekend ahead. thank you, doug. there has been an arrest in the phylicia barnes murder case, the honor student from north carolina who disappeared while visiting family in baltimore back in 2010. baltimore police arrested michael johnson wednesday night, charging him with first degree murder. he is the ex-boyfriend of the victim's sister. he was also the last person to see her alive. the teenager's body found a year ago in the susquehanna river. >> the fact that the investigation proceeded for a year before we were able to make the determination to provide or bring charges put them in some

national forest. it burned 1500 acres but was contained by morning. volunteers are looking for any possible signs of a soldier from fort bragg who has been missing for more than a week. 23-year-old kelly bordeaux was last seen at a local bar with a convicted sex offender, singing karaoke. he told a tv station bordeaux asked him for a ride home the night she disappeared. he was arrest forward v rerrest the terms of his probation, he's being considered a person of interest. kelly's husband spoke on "the today show" about the search. >> i'm very happy everyone like the fayetteville police, detectives, the military, all the volunteers, neighbors, i'm so happy that these people are trying to help find my wife. and i want her to come home safe and sound. >> police say a jogger was

recently raped in the same general area where bordeaux disappeared but at this time they do not think they are connected. president obama's recent push to lower student loan interest rates has some top republicans fired up. they accused the president of inventing a political conflict. not surprisingly it is spilling over in the race for the white house. steve handelsman reports. >> reporter: suddenly it's not just obama versus romney. the republican team is jumping in. >> doesn't pass the straight face test, are you kidding me? >> reporter: john boehner today attacked the president flying air force one this week pushing low rates on student loans. >> to travel to three battleground states, and go to three large college campuses, on taxpayer money, to try to make a political issue is pathetic. >> reporter: a fake fight, boehner called it, because republicans also want to keep student loan rates low. senate republicans today pushed

a bill to help women, paying for the testing of 400,000 rape kits. john mccain made the political point. >> to suggest that one group of us or one party speaks for all women is ridiculous. >> reporter: the fight for women voters is intense. how do we prevent secret service prostitution scandals? the top senate democrat today. >> hire more females. >> reporter: the obama team campaign is not new. vice president biden had a new slogan. >> osama bin laden is dead, general motors is alive. >> a spokesman said it's not a fake fight but real one republicans lost. >> we know what their position was, we're glad they changed it and they changed it in large part because the president took his argument out to the country. >> reporter: a reminder of what will be most important in the 2012 campaign. both sides agree this will

mostly be a fight between mitt romney and barack obama. i'm steve handelsman, news4, capitol hill. doug has more details on the weather. i don't think we're going to like it. >> it's a tough forecast for the weekend. we have a lot of people with plans. one viewer has a wedding on saturday. down in chesapeake. >> help us out. >> i'm trying. today i thought we would see more sunshine with the high near at least 70, but today we got to 65 degrees. we saw plenty of cloud cover across the area. take a look, some breaks in the clouds but still plenty of clouds to go around across the region. there is at least some sunshine this evening and we are looking fairly nice for the most part. 65 degrees the high temperature today at the airport, low of 56. only .03 of an inch of rain. i was hoping to see a tenth to quarter inch. as most of it stayed down to the

south. the temperature out there right now is 65 degrees, winds out of the south at 7 miles per hour. temperatures around the region, warmer to the north and west. that is where we have seen sun around martinsburg, cumberland, maryland, down toward charlottesville, temperature of 72. cooler to the east. 63 in annapolis. storm 4 radar, not a lot to show you, along i-81, winchester, front royal starting to see showers. this one right around winchester and frederick county, virginia had lightning with it, a little earlier but now starting to fall apart just a little bit. wouldn't be surprised, though, to see a rumble of thunder and see the whole little line come through the area by 8:00, 9:00. i don't expect a lot in the way of rain, keep the umbrella handy just in case if you're heading out it's all part of a larger system, a cold front that will move through tonight. just down to the south, if we had seen some sunshine today, we

would have gotten a little bit more in the way of stronger thunderstorms. i don't think severe but that is what they are dealing with now in the southeast portions of kentucky. numerous severe thunderstorm watches and look at red boxes, those are tornado warnings right now down there. we'll continue to watch as this whole line moves to the south. the severe weather will stay well to our south this evening. here is the cloud cover, you can see what i'm talking about, starting to see some clearing right now, looking like a nice evening for about the next two, three hours, until the showers move through the metro region. area of low pressure moving out of here. tomorrow a different day. plenty of sunshine, it is going to be on the cool side but also going to be very windy. i think winds upwards of 20 to 30 miles per hour during the day tomorrow, even with temperatures in the 60s, i think with the wind it is going to feel cool and still be below average. here's the tough thing on saturday. here comes an area of low pressure and a warm front. wherever this front sets up, the north side of it will see the cooler conditions and rain. right now i think the front will

stay to our south, that means a good chance of showers around the d.c. area, south of that, a little bit warmer down toward richmond, with less rain. this is going to be very interesting if this goes to the north, keeping our fingers crossed for that, warmer and see less in the chances for rain. the rain does move through here sunday night or saturday night and sunday right now looking much better with plenty of sunshine. this evening, mostly cloudy, cool and damp, low rain chance, a few showers maybe a rumble of thunder or two. next couple days, cool on saturday, high of only 57, then 64 on sunday, much nicer day sunday, monday coming in with a high of 65 degrees and then here you go, all of you hoping for a warm-up by the middle of next week, we get back to near 80 degrees and maybe above 80 as we make our way through the middle and late portions of next week. >> way more like it. >> all of us are hoping for the warm-up. >> just about. i'm ready. >> thanks, doug. coming up, a report on how police are going to extreme ways

two postal workers ambushed and robbed at gun point. >> happened in suitland, maryland, they got away in both cases. richard jordan has a look at evidence investigators would like you to see. >> they were different crimes. >> reporter: the postal inspection service reviews critical clues. the agency is investigating two armed robberies that put postal workers under the gun. each time the government employee was alone, opening the store. the video surveillance from september shows two men covered from head to toe walking in the suitland post office, one of them clearly has a gun. >> they are just robbing everyone, ridiculous. >> reporter: the men in this sketch were armed at the fort davis post office last july. in both cases they got away with money vital equipment. >> they can pose as postal employees which is very upsetting to us because we don't want anybody posing as a postal

employee. our nation depends on our postal employees to deliver the mail every day. >> kind of weird, people have to watch their back. they can rob anybody. >> reporter: they are anxious to catch the crooks. >> we're not certain as to what their exact motive is but it definitely is to get some sort of funds or property from the post office. and they are willing to display handguns to get it. >> reporter: the postal inspection service is offering $40,000 in each case for information that leads to an arrest. if you have the tip, head over to our website nbcwashington.com for all the information to collect. in suitland, richard jordan, news4. we're hearing the calls for help after a deadly carbon monoxide poisoning in oxen hill. five people died on tuesday in a home on shelby drive. today authorities released the 911 call made by a relative who went to the home after he couldn't reach anyone by phone.

fare hike. i'll pay more to take the train, ride the bus and park your car in a metro garage. derrick ward spoke do unhappy riders to day. >> i want to you take a look at the faces that are in here and listen to their stories. because when it happens to you, you'll be sitting on our side. and it can happen. thank you. >> reporter: handicapped riders didn't hold back on their reaction to metro's fare hike. believe it or not riders who rely on metro access didn't get an increase in the maximum fare, it is $7. why the anger? their fares are calculated based on rail and bus fares and both rail and bus fares went up. >> i was disappoint they had approved the fare hike so quickly without addressing a future plan to help the disabled riders. >> what are you all doing? >> what the fare increase does is provide additional revenue to provide rush hour service during

the peak period, additional bus service, improve maintenance. >> reporter: two years since the last fare increase, the one approved today builds on that and hits the rails and road. base peak fare $2.10. the maximum is $5.75. the base off peak is 1.70. maximum is 3.50 non-rush. if you ride the bus and pay with cash, you'll pay 20 cent surcharge. metro wants you to buy smart trip faces. ril riders want a fare that is fair. >> a lot of suffering folks inside of a recession, how to spend more bucks they don't have. >> it's getting to the point where for a lot of people it will be cheaper to drive. >> reporter: if you do and park at a metro lot you'll pay an additional 25 cents. ride on metro is like so many things, the ride is going up but the price rarely comes down. you have a while to get used to this rate increase, a couple

years. >> the board has talked in terms of a policy of reviewing that situation every two years. two metro employees on paid leave after a train derailment this week. it was 7:00 tuesday night when a train bound for virginia derailed at the rosland station. metro blamed a switch problem for the derailment which caused big delays for commuters. officials say it's too soon to know whether the workers made mistakes that contributed to the derailment. metro states it is standard procedures. guy walked in a daycare center and started swinging a baseball bat around. it happened in landover, maryland. a security guard was lit in the head. none of the kids was injured. shomari stone the case rattled parents and the community. >> reporter: this is what every parent fears when you drop your kids off at a daycare sen deer, this is a quick point of reference we're here by the morgan boulevard metro station,

if i bring you closer to the scene this is "it's a family affair" child care at morgan boulevard. where police say a man walked inside, pretending he was a parent, they buzzed him in, he went on a rampage. let's show you video right now. they say he smashed this glass door you're looking at with a bat. the staff tells me they immediately went in lock down mode, called 911, realizing something was wrong. their main concern was to protect the children. the man then attacked the security guard, he hit him on the head with the bat causing serious wounds. then stole car keys from an employee, drove off and the prince georges county police department was able to catch him nearby. we talked to the director of the place and asked how this could happen? >> we have a buzzer system but even with that, you coming as a parent inquiring i would like to know information about the child care, we won't not have a potential parent not be able to

inquire about information when we assess that to be the matter. >> reporter: police told us the suspect's name is michael young from capital heights, maryland. he appeared to be under the influence of pcp, detectives are reviewing the surveillance video from inside the daycare center. in landover, maryland, shomari stone, news4. students held a walk for a classmate who is legally blind. he was diagnosed with a genetic eye disease at 3 years old, not letting his condition stop him from achieving his goals. the eighth grader is class president, reads braille and will be the youth chairperson for baltimore's annual 5 k vision walk in june. bjorn raised thousands of dollars for the foundation, fighting blindness. a fron-profit group that does research on degenerative eye diseases. in a few hours, robert griffin the iii will be a redskins.

you're watching news4 at 6:00. wow. the montgomery county police had a field exercise for accident investigators. officers from the collision reconstruction unit gave dramatic examples of what happens when a moving vehicle slams into a pedestrian or bike. they used crash dummies, watermelon heads on them to simulate. the workshop was meant to give officers additional insight in the physics of collisions so they can better understand what they see when they arrive on the scene after a real accident. tonight a news4 i-team exclusive going undercover to show you why fairfax county has a problem with rogue renters. the i-team's reporter has a
