minutes after a young woman was randomly, brutally attacked by a man wielding a claw hammer. the victim spoke to news4 by phone. >> i seen a shadow so i like turned around and it was a dude. i didn't think nothing of him. turned around, i would say like a second. he just struck me with something. >> reporter: one day after urging residents to walk in pairs notice bing a pair of three attacks in the petworth area. police chief kathy lanier had this to say. >> i feel much more comfortable now that this person is in custody. >> reporter: community reaction is one of shock. that someone so young may be responsible for so much blood

shed. he's the family member of two nfl players. >> we think this is a case of someone who's mentally ill and someone who acted out, perhaps did not take his medication. >> reporter: right now michael davis is only charged with thursday night's attack. that is very likely to change. jackie benson, news4 today. >> davis will be in court later today. we'll have more on that at 9:00 this morning. looking to the weather, chilly start out there. i should have worn tights. >> the flip between march and april continues. i'm convinced mother nature forgot. we have had an april about cooler than march. we're about a degree close of april being cooler than march. not a bad way to get your weekend started. there are clouds sneaking in

from the west. those darker gray clouds, those are inbound clouds. and they have a chance for showers before the weekend is done. mid to upper 40s around town. there are plenty of spots above the 40 degree mark. most of northern virss is holding in the low 40s. even though there's no rain in town, there are drops now showing up in the mountains of west virginia. more where that came from. most of that is going to evaporate as it comes over the mountains. but the second batch, that i don't think will evaporate before it gets to the ground. shower chances increasing as your saturday continues. a nice dry start to the morning. temperatures 30s and 40s now will be in the mid-50s by morning. up to 60 degrees today. with clouds coming in, showers become more likely after 3:00 this afternoon. plenty of rain for the overnight hours tonight. we should get most of the drops

out of here by early tomorrow morning. if you have things to do this weekend, stack it up before lurge today. maryland state police stopped collecting dna samples from suspects from violent crimes. saying they are unconstitutional for suspects charged. police can still get dna samples of those convicts. it stemmed from a man's rape conviction and life sentence. the state's court of appeals turned over his sentence after saying his dna sample did not match the case. in the wake of the secret service prostitution scandal, agents are now prohibited from drinking alcohol within ten hours of working. they're also not allowed to visit non-reputable establishments or have people other than other agents inside their hotel rooms.

the secret service said it is planning a training session on these new ethic rules next week. federal prosecutors recommend a tough prison sentence for harry thomas jr. prosecutors say he should spend three years behind bars and pro bags. he pleaded guilty to embezzling more than $300,000 of the city's money. pushed for a sentence of 18 months saying he's accepted responsibility of his actions. a major traffic alert today in fairfax county. the gallows road and lee highway is closed. crews are repaving that intersection. you can get to businesses in that area but have to follow posted detour signs. v.d.o.t. should be done by tomorrow afternoon. and a heads up for track work on the redline in two areas.

trains are single tracking between forest glen and totten stations. the work could set you back about 20 minutes and should wrap up before the monday morning rush. today a national effort to get rid of potentially dangerous pills that may be in your medicine cap net right now. this is national prescription drug takeback day. you can bring unused and unwanted pills to police stations to be properly disposed of no questions asked. leaving them in the medicine cabinet could be dangerous to a child or yourself. there is the district one nation. the district three station and the district four station. collections start around 10:00 this morning going to go on until 2:00 this afternoon. a great program.

president obama officially launches his re-election campaign one week from today. he has rallies planned in ohio and vishz that day. both are battle ground states. he'll speak at ohio state university in columbus and vcu in richmond. rallies also show how hard the candidates are going after the young voters. this past week the president spoke to students at the university of colorado, the university of iowa, and the university of north carolina. >> and i, too, want to slow jam the news. >> yes, he did. the president went on late night with jimmy fallon tuesday night when the show was taped at the unc campus. mitt romney is also reaching

out to young voters. at a college in ohio yesterday he encouraged young americans who may struggle finding a job to take risks. he suggested they even borrow money from their parents if it gave them a chance to succeed. young voters still support president obama but they're less enthusiastic than they were four years ago. republicans plan to capitalize on that. the candidates are also trying to focus on the issue of student loans. president obama has urged congress this past week to act soon or the interest rate on a popular student loan will double this summer. nbc news's john yang has more. >> reporter: college graduation season is right around the corner and for millions of students the joy of achievement can be accompanied by dread. consider the average senior. she'll leave college this spring with a diploma and student loans

totaling more than $24,000. a new life with old debts. at new york university, some students owe even more. >> i'll be facing 80 grand of debt when i leave. zb looking to close to a quarter million. >> it'll be quite a bit. about 250,000. >> reporter: those burdens could soon grow. the interest rate on stafford loans are set to double to 6.8% if congress doesn't act. students averaging about $11,700. it would cost 5,000 dollars in higher interest payments. >> it's not going the stop them from going to school but they may have more trouble in the back end. and the default rate could go up. >> reporter: often their parents can't help to afford them with tuition so the burden falls on them. with half of recent college

grads unemployed or underemployed, paying back those loans, hard. >> there's also an impact on the broader economy because they don't have as much money to spend. that money should be put back in the economy. it could help us a good deal. >> reporter: financial experts say planning for how to pay for college should start early. >> you need to figure out what you can afford to spend when your child is just entering high school. and choose schools with a wide range of affordability. >> reporter: to make sure the cost doesn't outweigh the future dividends it promises. nbc news, washington. >> republicans and democrats agree that student loans need to remain affordable, but they cannot agree on how to pay for the current low interest rate. the gop controlled house passed legislation that would keep federal loans for doubling. they want to pay for the measure but cutting women's health

yesterday. while there were no deaths on commercial flights, there has been an increase on personal and chartered flights. also a slight increase in airplane accidents. a new study may wamake you want to ditch your car. own k and operating a car will cost you about 60 cents a mile or about $9,000 a year. that's a jump of about $178 from last year. a 15% jump in fuel costs and tire costs is a reason you pay more to own your car. metro is calling off an ae letter for its riders. the employee worked along routes 52 and 54. metro disinfected 170 buses as a precaution. the agency now says the driver's condition is not a public health

police say davis may have used that hammer in three previous attacks including one that killed a man visiting d.c. from colorado. the republican-controlled house has passed a bill that will keep the interest rate from doubling on millions of student loans. democrats object to the measure because supporters want to pay for it through spending cuts. the legislation will likely die in the democrat-controlled senate. and redskins fans will get their first look at robert griffin iii today. the newest member of the skins will be officially introduced at washington's draft day party at fed ex field. fairfax county police are investigating a disturbing case of animal cruelty. someone slashed three horses in reston. the animals are part of a program known as spirit open e

mistress. he also admitted he kept some of that money and did not pay taxes on it. young's wife will continue testimony monday. george zimmerman's lawyer says it's simply an oversight they did not disclose he had more than $200,000 at his disposal. zimmerman's family originally told the judge they would have trouble coming up with his bond money. the judge wants to know more about the money before deciding if zimmerman has to forfeit the donations. the man accused of molesting young girls says he did not do anything wrong. robyn gardner testified in her husband's trial yesterday. he's kussed of molesting girls during his daughter's sleepover last year. but the wife said he comforted them during a thunderstorm and went back to bed. said her father laid next to her and not the other girls as he

friends said. authorities in mexico have joined the search for a 6-year-old girl who disappeared from her home in arizona. isabel mercedes celis. detectives are looking into the possibility that isabel could have been taken across the border. they're also checking hotels, bus terminals and businesses in mexico. the parents last saw her in her bedroom the night of april 20th. the next morning they discovered her window open with the screen pushed aside. federal officials are revealing more about the animal that tested positive for mad cow disease. the 10-year-old cow lived on a california dairy farm and was considered very old for a milk producer. it was one of 40,000 cows randomly tested by the agriculture department. the animal was euthanized after it was unable to stand. the usda is trying to determine

breast-feeding mothers may save money, but not by buying formula. a new study shows they could be losing out when it comes to their salary. women's income dropped when they chose to breast-feed six months or longer. their salary remained low five years after their babies were born. a reduction in working hours was the main reason for the drop. a new survey shows more doctors would pick a different career if they had a choice. this survey is from medscape and
