the air. outside kilroy's sports bar near busch stadium in st. louis, panic after deadly winds ripped through an outdoor party tent packed with fans celebrating a cardinals win saturday afternoon. >> anything you can imagine that wasn't nailed down, airborne. [ sirens ] >> reporter: paramedics rushed more than a dozen victims to the hospital with five reported in serious or critical condition. authorities say 100 others were treated at the scene for various injuries. >> the injuries were mainly cuts, bruises and twisted ankles and maybe a broken arm. >> reporter: the bar's owner says customers tried to save the one man who died, during a storm of hail, lightning and rain. >> my customers -- they all became paramedics. >> reporter: the force of the winds blew the tent and everything that was in it on to a nearby railroad bridge.

>> don't like this type of building, if you will. it just gives us nightmares. and as you can see, it can cause one. >> reporter: authorities say with the storm warnings posted that day, the damage and injuries could have been so much worse. >> these are temporary structures. they're certainly not designed in any stretch of the imagination to handle a severe weather event like this. >> reporter: now, there are conflicting reports this morning as to what caused that 60-year-old man's death. the owner here says that firefighters told him yesterday that he was struck by lightning, although officials can't confirm that to us at this hour. lester? >> katy tur, thanks. where is the storm system behind all that damage heading now? let's check in with janice huff. janice, good morning. >> good morning, lester. unfortunately, st. louis is in the red zone again today, and that stretches all the way back to oklahoma city and lubbock, texas. it's this area where we have to watch out for damaging winds, large hail and isolated tornadoes. more so the winds and the hail. and speaking of that, we had

more than 21 wind damage reports and more than 200 hail reports yesterday from the st. louis area, stretching all the way into southern illinois. well, right now, the radar loop is showing isolated showers and thunderstorms with the system just starting to bubble up and headed in the direction of st. louis. so, once again, severe weather threat from st. louis back to the texas panhandle. more coming up in just a few minutes. lester, back to you. >> all right, janice. in fact, we'll get the rest of your national forecast ahead, but right now, here's jenna. >> all right, lester, thank you. president obama was all about getting the laughs last night it was the annual white house correspondents dinner. nbc's mike viqueira has more from the white house. hey, mike, good morning! >> reporter: hey, jenna, the barbs were flying last night. most of them were good-natured. if you take one part politics, one part power, add a dash of celebrities glitz, perhaps a little wine on the table, and you get these sometimes odd, but always entertaining evenings, the white house correspondents dinner. >> it's great to be here this evening in the vast, magnificent hilton ballroom, or what mitt

romney would call a little fixer-upper. >> reporter: it promises to be a tough campaign, but before the battle officially begins, president obama got in a few lighthearted shots against mitt romney. >> we also both have degrees from harvard. i have one, he has two. what a snob. >> reporter: it's been said that washington is hollywood for ugly people. but for just one night every year, those two worlds collide. >> they say washington gets really excited for this big night. >> reporter: they call it the nerd prom, the annual white house correspondents dinner. over the years, it's morphed from just another dreary d.c. event, where reporters and politicos lay down their arms to share a few laughs to a major schmooze fest. a three-day gala of glamour and blitz capped off by the dinner itself. >> four years ago, i was locked in a brutal primary battle with

idea who half those celebrities were. i'm like, there's the secretary of agriculture, oh, my gosh! anyway, it was a fun evening and we'll do it again next year, i guess. >> well, i did see 16 different shots and different angles of george clooney, so i'm sure they got that one right. mike viqueira -- >> reporter: yeah, nobody messed up george clooney. >> we might. mike viqueira at the white house, thanks again. here's lester. meantime, to a guy who knew every celebrity. david gregory, moderator of "meet the press." good to see you. what was your favorite moment last night at the dinner? >> you know, actually, i thought jimmy kimmel's hard-edged political lines -- it's funny, for an outside guy like that, he came in and made a joke about the president compromising too much to republicans and that sort of thing. he had a couple good lines. he did it pretty well and it was fun. >> the president made the secret service joke. i was wondering if it was too soon. apparently it wasn't. did that catch everybody by surprise? >> not really. i think he handled it pretty

well, said they had to get home for curfew. so it was within the safe boundaries. kimmel got a little more edgy about it, but you know, it was pretty good. it was kind of tame. i thought that the president was a little tame with romney. he had fun. mike showed the ad about, you know, the dog riding on top of air force one, but he was still pretty safe. he found the way to do the dig, like mitt romney is the square guy who wants equal time for jimmy fallon, on merv griffin, you know. so he got the line in there that he wanted to. >> it's interesting, you had the line there. let's talk about the real-life political battle right now, because that whole notion of square versus cool is one of the story lines right now. a conservative super pac is trying to paint president obama as too much of a celebrity, too cool, and then romney advisers came in on the tail end of that, saying this election is not going to be about who's cooler. the question is going to be who do you trust to run the economy. that line of attack didn't really play well in 2008. why do they think it will play

well now? >> well, i think what's different about 2008, 2008 was about saying this guy's a celebrity, but what's he ever actually done? now it's about saying, hey, you may like this president, you may think he's cool, but let's focus on the results, let's focus about what's really hard in your lives right now. that's who mitt romney is. i think that romney is recognizing there's a lot of americans who like the president, who may even want him to succeed but don't like his policies. that's where romney's got to come in and be the plausible alternative. i think that's a lot of what that's about. >> both romney and president obama were on college campuses this week. polls show the president has a pretty big edge among the youth vote. what's the romney plan to try and reduce that edge? >> well, to get in there and tap into it in a different way. you know, if romney looks, he says, look, a lot of college kids preferred obama in 2008, a lot of hope and change, a lot of enthusiasm. well, that's ened a little bit here as we get into 2012. you've got a group that could be a little more up for grabs. and again, you focus if you're mitt romney on the reality for

young people -- a lot of student debt, a very tough job market, why? because the economy is still very much struggling. and make this a referendum on the president's policies. mitt romney's going to find six ways from sunday to make this a referendum about the president's handling of the economy. >> and who do you have on "meet the press" later this morning? >> we're going to talk to ed gillespie with the romney campaign, robert gibbs, former press secretary with the obama campaign. also, hilary rosen who caused the stir going after ann romney, talking about women and her connection to women. she's going to join our roundtable as well. >> david gregory, thanks. >> thanks, lester. >> now let's get more of the headlines from tom llamas at the news desk. >> good morning, jenna and lester. good morning, everyone. we begin in china where there are reports that authorities are rounding up family of the blind activist who fled last week and is said to be taking refuge in the u.s. embassy in beijing. nbc's ian williams is monitoring the situation from thailand. >> reporter: chen guangchen

denounced himself on youtube, talking about the investigation of the brutality him and his family have endured. the self-trained lawyer has been blind since childhood. he was jailed and then put under house arrest with his family. he documented their confinement. his every movement was monitored. visitors prevented from meeting him. yet, he was able to secretly plot his escape. friends say he evaded china's oppressive security apparatus by pretending for weeks to be sick, hoping his jailers would lower their guard, and they did. though blind, he escaped over a wall. friends drove him from his village to beijing and to what one describes as the only safe place, the u.s. embassy. though this has not been confirmed by either washington or beijing. >> our reliable source shared

with us that chen guancheng is in the u.s. diplomatic protection. >> reporter: there is no sign of extra security at the u.s. embassy in beijing. if he is there, it comes at an awkward time for the u.s., with secretary of state hillary clinton due to visit next week. ian williams, nbc news, bangkok. the coast guard is searching for a fourth crew member missing in a yacht race off the california and mexico coasts. three other crew members were killed late friday or early saturday when the 37-foot yacht apparently collided with a much larger vessel. and a wayward dolphin is still stranded in narrow wetlands along the southern california coast. wildlife experts say it was headed toward the ocean saturday but was frightened by a pair of other dolphins and suddenly turned around. that's the news. now back to jenna and janice and a good doctor. >> oh, now you've got tom on board! i see you recruited tom. >> i'm also a veterinarian. i can handle that dog, too.

tomorrow as well remember, we're here to get the weather any time. logon to weather.com. now here's jenna. >> as always, janice, thank you very much. a manhunt near seattle comes to a bizarre end. investigators spent a week looking for a murder suspect described as a loner. but in the end, s.w.a.t. teams, tear gas and explosives weren't needed. nbc's michelle franzen has more. good morning, michelle. >> good morning, jenna. this standoff had all the makings of a hollywood action movie. a hunt for a suspected killer, a trail of bizarre clues that led to a secret bunker and an ending no one expected. this is the underground bunker where police say a well trained survivalist was hold up, heavily armed with large-caliber, scoped rifles, bullet-proof vests, gas masks and a generator. investigators say peter keller had spent eight years building and stock-piling the elaborate two-story structure, preparing for the end of the world. >> you couldn't even make this up. i mean, the challenges presented

by this were just extraordinary. >> reporter: police suspect keller shot and killed his wife and 18-year-old daughter as they slept before setting their nearby home on fire last sunday. detectives have not revealed a motive for the killings. >> i can't stop being angry. you know? they were amazing people. >> reporter: photographs found in keller's home after the fire led authorities to the cascade mountains outside seattle. after a wild day of tactical operations in rugged terrain, s.w.a.t. teams used explosives yesterday to blow the lid off the bunker. inside, they found a body believed to be keller, dead of an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound. >> appears to have been dead for some time. there's a pistol nearby and there's a great deal of blood. >> reporter: court documents reveal keller had withdrawn thousands of dollars from a bank last week and told co-workers at this computer company that he might not return. >> this person that we thought we knew turned out to be somebody that had a whole other

side to them, and we can't make any sense out of it. >> reporter: officers also searched the bunker for explosives and booby traps and say they're relieved that what was expected to be a much longer standoff is over. police seized evidence from the bunker and are still waiting for the medical examiner to confirm the cause of death and the identity of the man found inside. jenna. >> all right, michelle franzen. michelle, thanks. and now here's lester. >> jenna, thanks. police in fayetteville, north carolina, will begin focusing on collecting evidence and interviews as the search continues for ft. bragg soldier kelli bordeaux. and as nbc's kerry sanders reports, investigators are getting a hand from dedicated volunteers. >> reporter: through the dense underbrush -- >> another came in, they would come in somewhere in here. >> reporter: -- in a vast, five-acura. >> we're starting at her apartment right here, and we are actually working this grid. >> reporter: volunteers, some on horseback, others combing the

banks of the cape fear river again saturday turned up no clues, no signs of army private kelli bordeaux. >> we could not 100% identify anything in that search. >> reporter: going into the third week of the search, fayetteville police continue to say publicly they're still operating as if they'll find the 23-year-old alive. detectives recently released this photo of her. kelli snapped it looking into the mirror. >> this photograph was taken of her just before she left to go out that night. >> reporter: she was last seen leaving this local bar, froggy bottoms, at around 1:20 in the morning april 14th. police say most of the details leading up to bourdeaux's disappearance have some km from nicholas holbert, a registered sex offender. the 25-year-old lived in a tent behind the bar. holbert told a tv station that bourdeaux asked him for a ride home the night she vanished. >> i have nothing to do with it. i picked her up and took her

actor ryan o'neal is fighting cancer, but in a new book, he opens up about his relationship with the late farrah fawcett. jake gutierrez has more on the love story that captivated a generation. >> reporter: she was america's angel. >> ryan, to your left! >> reporter: and he was her man. as he told "access hollywood" last year. >> i was in love. >> reporter: now, three years after farrah fawcett's death, ryan o'neal is facing his own battle with cancer. in a written statement earlier this month, o'neal said, "although i was shocked and stunned by the news, i feel fortunate that it was detected early." >> the vast majority of men who have stage 2 tumors end up living their normal lifespan and never even dying from their

disease. >> reporter: so, the actor isn't letting his diagnosis slow him down. in a memoir due out may 1st, he's revealing candid details about his lifelong partner, seen here in a documentary she produced, determined to fight the cancer that eventually killed her. >> i used to wonder how people who were very sick with a terminal diagnosis could get up and go on with their lives. >> reporter: o'neal is now reflecting on why they never married. in the book, he remembers he did propose on a road trip, and she accepted, but a flat tire prevented them from finding a church that night. the couple joked it was a sign. looking back, he writes, "i can't help but wonder how my life with this rare woman might have been different if we had gone through with it that day." >> it was this very epic love story that played out in the public eye over the course of decades. >> reporter: but few love stories are perfect. >> i think a lot of things have

gotten in my way. >> reporter: for years, o'neal was estranged from his three oldest children, but last year, he reunited with his daughter, actress tatum o'neal on a very raw, and sometimes tough-to-watch reality show on the oprah winfrey network. >> i think he regrets very much a lot of how he parented his kids, he regrets some of the rough times with farrah. >> reporter: regrets now on paper for the man without his angel. for "today," gabe gutierrez, nbc news, los angeles. >> and ryan o'neal will join us live for an exclusive interview tomorrow right here on "today." well, it seems like the saying every dog has its day is true. i want you to meet cactus jack. the little puppy was caught in a cactus plant in arizona and was covered in cactus spines before being rescued by a good samaritan. cactus jack was ultimately adopted by sarah. both of them are here with us. sarah, good morning. and our little friend here. >> thankfully only one of them

is sleeping. >> good morning. >> i understand you took about a five-gallon bucket's worth of cactus needles from his face. how's he doing? >> he's doing amazing. he's very good. he's very mellow, laid back. that tail has not stopped wagging. >> is he mellow and laid back because of what he went through? did the vets say he will be permanently scarred, or i don't know, damaged from this? >> no. he came out of it perfectly good. he wasn't even in the humane society for about a week, not even. >> and he was undernourished and dehydrated during that time that he was stuck in that cactus. thankfully, someone found him. and then the story got out. so many people wanted to adopt him. there were dozens of people that -- >> lots of people. >> you put your name in a lottery, right? >> yeah. i went down and there was 30 people in front of me, and before you know it, there's a line out the door. and i had no chance. i had no chance. and sure enough, i put my name in the bucket and they pulled four names, and mine was the first one that they pulled. >> wait, were you looking for a

puppy or did you read this story and what happened to this poor little puppy and decide i have to get into this raffle? >> i actually had been looking for a puppy, and my mom is the one that told me about him. and i ended up being there first thing the next morning an hour early and put my name in the bucket. >> and i understand cactus jack, and your whole story, he's quite a celebrity down there. >> he's a celebrity everywhere. at the airport, people were stopping, saying hi to cactus jack. at the hotel, people know who cactus jack is. everybody. i was downtown phoenix and i had people stop, pull over, and they turned off the ac and rolled down the windows, "is that cactus jack?" it sure is. >> aww. >> the story has a double good ending, because other people who had been in the raffle to win cactus jack, they came down to the humane society, and they ended up adopting a bunch of other dogs that same day, right? >> yes. they actually adopted eight dogs
