plunges off the highway into the bronx zoo. three of the victims are children. an ambulance crash in prince george's county. four people sent to the hospital. including the paramedics. >> and before i can turn to see where my dog was, like i'm doing now, i was struck with an object. >> he was hit in the head with a hammer. tonight a man who survived the attacks in the petworth neighborhood is telling his story to news 4. and good evening. i'm wendy rieger. we have a lot for you on this sunday evening, starting with that victim. he says he was just walking his dog when a man on the street spoke kindly to him and then attacked. news 4's darcy spencer has what happened next. >> i keep going. and god looked out for me. >> reporter: this man walks his little dog coco twice a day in his northwest washington neighborhood. but last thursday afternoon the walk turned into a traumatizing event. he was struck in the head, police say, by a teen suspected in a series of hammer attacks.

>> he walked by and he said, "how are you doing, sir?" you know, with a smile. and i said, how are you doing in and before i could turn to see where my dog was, like i'm doing now, i was struck with an object. >> reporter: the victim, who doesn't want to show his face or give his name, was walking in the 200 block of ingerham street in northwest d.c. he says he was knocked down and knocked out. he regained consciousness several minutes later. he was hit here on his ear in the side of his head. his forehead was cut when he fell to the ground. and he has a scrape on his arm. >> i was slightly unconscious. i still could see, and i didn't know which way he event or -- he got away quick. >> reporter: the suspect in the assault is 19-year-old michael davis. he was arrested later that evening after he allegedly attacked a 19-year-old woman with a claw hammer, fracturing her skull. that weapon has been recovered. the victim did not report the crime until the next day, and

according to these charging documents police found the rubberized handle of a hammer that had been broken off near the scene of the attack. the victim says he did not call police because he felt okay and it was time for him to pick up two children from school. >> and i'm sorry i didn't come forward earlier than that day. but i just had my hands full and i did give it a lot of thought, you know, and i'm just glad no one else was hurt. >> reporter: davis is charged in two attacks but he's suspected in three more. one claimed the life of a colorado tourist. all of them happened over just a few days in the petworth neighborhood. >> all i can say is i hope they got the right man. >> reporter: darcy spencer, news 4. another woman was hit with a hammer in d.c. today. police do not think this attack is linked to the ones that occurred in petworth. officers say the woman was hit in the head at 1:00 on pomeroy road in southeast. she was taken to the hospital. she is expected to survive. four people were hurt in an

ambulance crash in prince georging county that happened at the intersection of branch avenue and serate's road in clinton. investigators say a tow truck broadsided the ambulance as it turned onto serate's road. the ambulance then hit another car. the injured included two paramedics, the patient in the ambulance, and i driver all went to the hospital. they're all expected to be okay. fire and ems officials say the ambulance did have its lights and its sirens on. wednesday marks one year since navy s.e.a.l.s swooped into a compound in pakistan and killed osama bin laden, one of the most iconic images from that night, this one. the picture of president obama and other political and military leaders in the white house situation room. for the first time since that room was built network tv cameras were allowed inside. brian williams got an exclusive look. he joined president obama that night, asking him to relive that night. >> there you are. >> here i am sitting right here. >> that's -- >> that's an intense look on

disappointments. we forgive the people that have hurt us. lord, we forgive ourselves. we have a fresh new attitude. >> this event was also streamed online and through social media. for the first time since last year's 5.8 earthquake, you can now get a closer look at the stone gargoyles that decorate the national cathedral. today the cathedral resumed tours that have been put on hold because of the damage done from that quake. admission is $10 for adults. it does include a slide show and an outdoor walk. and those tours will be running through october. we're also following a developing story from prince george's county. two people have been shot in bladensburg in the 3400 block of 53rd avenue. that's where news 4's erica gonzalez joins us live. erica? >> reporter: wendy, good evening. actually, crime scene investigators just now packed up their things and headed out for the evening. but this was quite a busy scene just about five minutes ago. let me tell you how this all began. just around 7:00 this afternoon,

or this evening, police got a phone call about shots ringing out in the 3400 block of 55th avenue in bladensburg for a report of those gunshots we just mentioned. now, authorities tell me two men were shot. detectives have spent the evening identifying evidence and using flashlights to look for more. one woman tells me she heard the shots ring out, went to her window, and then saw a flatbed tow truck speed out of the complex. >> all you could hear was maybe three or four gunshots initially. then again i heard maybe the body of the tow truck hit over the speed bump, boom, boom, boom. and then i heard something might have sounded like a closed door from a vehicle. and then i heard another five, six shots. >> reporter: and police tell me that the investigation is still ongoing but that the two men that were involved were transported to different nearby

hospitals. we're live in bladensburg tonight. erica gonzalez, news 4. well, police also in prince george's county are releasing sketches and warning women to walk in groups after a series of sexual assaults on or near the northwest branch trail in maryland. that is near the west hyattsville metro station. there have been five attacks just this year. and that includes three rapes since march. in two of those cases the victim said their attacker used a large kitchen knife. in the most recent just over a week ago the victim says the suspect also had a gun. the battle over a proposal to bring the first whole foods to prince george's county goes before the county council tomorrow. developers want to create a mixed use property on 36 acres of land along route 1 near east-west highway in riverdale. but that land, currently it's zoned for housing only and critics are arguing it could put a strain on the already crowded

route 1 corridor. according to the "washington post," 17 people are signing up to testify or have already signed up to testify in & that hearing is expected to last for several days. we are less than seven months away from the presidential election. president obama teaming up with former president bill clinton for a set of fund-raisers. the first one tonight at the home of terry mccallive in mcclain. these fund-raisers mark an increasing partnership between the clintons and the obamas after a bitter rivalry in the 2008 presidential primary. president clinton recently appeared in a political ad touting the president's decision to kill osama bin laden, something the romney campaign is not happy about. >> took something that was a unifying event for all americans. and he's managed to turn it into a divisive, partisan, political attack. mitt romney said that was foolish, he wouldn't do such a thing, that he wouldn't move heaven and earth to get osama bin laden. >> meanwhile, newt gingrich is going to be in washington this wednesday.

investigators in new york, they are trying to figure out what caused a horrible accident earlier this afternoon. seven people killed including three children when a van plunges over a guardrail and crashes into a remote area of the bronx zoo. nbc's jonathan vigliotti has more. >> reporter: the dense wooded area of the bronx zoo's southeast corner hides the tragic scene that first responders describe as one of the worst they have ever seen on the job. >> i've been in the fire department 30 years. how long, howie? 30 years. and sometimes you come upon events that are horrific. and this was one of them. >> reporter: fdny deputy chief ronald werner says when crews finally made it through a thicket of trees, weeds, and

vines they found a van upside down, completely crushed. inside, seven people. the youngest an infant, the oldest 84. none of them made it out of this urban jungle alive. >> after the victims were extricated one at a time they were brought over to our triage area. they went through the triage process. and based upon their horrific injury there was nothing further we could do. >> reporter: police say one of the victims was a male, the others females. sources say they are related. their lives came to an end just before 12:30 sunday afternoon. police say that van was heading southbound on the bronx river parkway when it somehow lost control, hit the median, then took a fatal plunge. >> it traveled over the railing and a distance of maybe 75, 80 feet before it came down and hit the ground. it fell 100 feet from the overpass. >> reporter: zoo officials say the van landed in a remote area near the zoo's spare parking pour for trams. and no staff or animals were in harm's way. still this chilling accident has reached everyone in this corner of the bronx, among the cheerful

sound of a weekend ice cream truck you can clearly hear the gasps as passers-by wonder aloud what went wrong. >> that was jonathan vigliotti reporting. hundreds of people in east london apartments, they could soon have missiles and soldiers on top of their buildings because of the olympics. the british military says the apartments have a perfect view of olympic park and the surrounding area. so they sent them a leaflet telling them that the missiles, surface-to-air missiles, would be -- along with ten soldiers would be sitting on their roofs for two months. well, the residents don't like that. so the military says the missiles will be used only in the event of an extreme security threat. hard to believe it has been one year since the royal wedding. the duke and duchess of cambridge celebrating their first anniversary today in a private affair after that very public affair a year ago that had 2 billion people worldwide tuning in to watch prince

william and kate middleton tie the knot. since then kate became one of the most popular members of the royal family. there's a warning tonight for parents about a dangerous new trend among teenagers. it's called the salt and ice challenge. it has become popular among middle and high school students who post videos of themselves doing it on youtube. they pour salt onto their hand and then they put an ice cube on top. then they hold it down until the ice melts or the pain gets too intense. when it is over, the reaction between the ice, the salt, and your skin leaves a fairly ugly mark. >> i heard it was like, yeah. why did you do it? he's like i guess it's fun. >> i think it's stupid. why would you want to do that? just like maybe to be cool? like that's stupid. >> and the burns if you watch are awful. health experts warn the reaction between the ice and the salt can cause severe burns.

monday morning. 59 degrees right now. that's at national airport, where the wind has gone calm. the sky remains clear. but out in the western and northern suburbs a noticeably cooler trend. 46 now in frederick, maryland. 46 gaithersburg, germantown, 46 into manassas. most of western fairfax county also into the upper 40s right now. waldorf 49 degrees. a little bit cooler out to the west. storm 4 radar there's just ground clutter around here. no rain on the radar too close to us. nearest raindrops to us now moving into parts of lower michigan. that area of low pressure is going up into the western great lakes. but this trailing cold front back here, you'll be seeing this on the next graphic. our future weather forecast, that cold front will impact our weather as we get toward late tomorrow and then mostly into the day tuesday. high pressure heading offshore for now. so a chilly start first thing tomorrow morning. the warmer air lying in wait just down to our south and west. tomorrow will be comparatively cool compared to the rest of the week with highs once again mid 60s up toer 60s. just a touch cooler than today.

but as that area of low pressure glides up to our north and there's that trailing cold front coming on through, monday afternoon a chance of a scattered shower or two, and then tuesday that will be our best chance for rain in the upcoming week. but even tuesday is looking very mild. so overnight high clouds, cool to chilly, overnight lows mostly in the 40s. and then tomorrow not a bad day at all. partly sunny skies, a risk of a few spotty showers mainly north and west of town. highs in the 60s tomorrow, but that's it. then it's springtime on tuesday for may 1st, and then there's your summer-like preview. 80 wednesday, 83 thursday. 86 on friday. next week it may be a touch cooler than that but still well warmer than average. be on the lookout. full-scale pollen alert coming as we go through the week. >> there goes the rest of my voice. >> i know it. still ahead, a teenage girl treated to a shopping spree. and that's not the best gift she's been given. it's not your ordinary swing set. a challenge not for those afraid

wall, sacrifices his body, gets up, makes a pretty good throw there to first. take another look. left shoulder into the wall. but he's all right. gio gonzalez on the mound is loving it. he says you can play center field for me anytime, kid. and he waves off the trainers. i'm fine. a little dirt on it. so his legend goes. no score in the sixth, though. james loney. he's a nats killer. he singles with the bases loaded. harp yes throws it in. but matt kemp and andre ethier score. dodgers go on to win 2-0. they sweep the nats. the nats now have lost four in a row. to denver. mets-rockies. college teammates peyton manning and rockies first baseman todd helton catching up. the two -- peyton was the starting quarterback at tennessee over helton. but you know, what helton can hit. doesn't have to throw. with the bases loaded, that's a grand slam right there that ties the game at 4. and that, folks, is the reason he chose baseball.

you think bungee jumping is wacky. check out what they're doing in china. this is nuts. contestants try to see how high they can swing on a rope that's attached to the arm of a crane. according to chinese tv, it was basically the equivalent of swinging off a 33 story building. seven people were brave enough to do this. it was a competition. a canadian actually took first place. he swung to a height of just over 155 feet. >> wow. well, a young lady got to celebrate a return to good health today thanks to the folks at the make a wish foundation. 16-year-old kaitlin from keysville, maryland got to go on a shopping spree and she got to spend about an hour at the krafrts store at a.c. moore and she got to shop at several

a couple from kansas made a fashion statement when they went to the prom last night. mark haresden and kate shut'll worth went to the prom wearing duct tape outfits. it took more than 100 hours to make these two outfits. cost about 60 bucks for both of them. they're taking part in a national duct tape prom competition. if selected they win a $5,000 scholarship. and actually, they look quite fashionable. job well done. >> spend 60, win five brand. >> that's hour show for tonight.
