welcome to news 4 at 4:00. i'm pat lawson muse. >> i'm jim handly. first up at 4:00 we start with the terror heard on tape from jennifer hudson's sister right after their family members were murdered. a judge released a 911 audio of the call made by the oscar winner's sister julia in october of '08. julia's estranged husband william balfour is now on trial for the murder of the hudson sisters's brother, mother and 7-year-old son. the jury heard the recording last week. a warning. some may find the audio disturbing. >> i don't understand what you're saying. you've got to stop screaming. >> somebody's killed my mama. somebody's killed my mama. >> do you know what happened? did she fall? >> i don't know. i just got home from work and there is a bullet hole in my front door. >> the trial judge decided that releasing the tapes would not compromise balfour's due process in the trial. he has pled not guilty in the

murders. a monumental moment in manhattan today. one world trade center became the tallest building in new york. the moment came this afternoon when workers put steel columns in place on the 100th floor. the columns make the frame of the building a little taller than the roof of the observation deck at the empire state building, a watershed moment in the construction of a building that serves as a symbol of the recovery from the september 11 terror attacks. 1 world trade center will eventually become the tallest building in the u.s. in about a year a needle that is 400 feet tall will be installed at the top of the building making its total height 1776 feet. an effort to raise money to complete a national memorial to other september 11 victims will take place here in washington next month. a flight 93 fundraiser will be hosted by former presidents bill clinton and george w. bush and speaker of the house john boehner. they are hoping to raise the money needed to build a learning

center and to put up 40 giant wind chimes for the 40 victims of the flight. flight 93 crashed in shanksville, pennsylvania when passengers fought terrorists for kroefl the plane. back close to home police are trying to figure out who shot and killed a man this morning in southeast washington. it happened just before noon in the 2200 block of savannah street just a few blocks from the maryland border. investigators tell us a man in his 20s was shot twice. no word yet on a possible motive or suspects. d.c. police are hunting for a man who sexually assaulted a georgetown student on campus over the weekend. it happened friday night. sources tell news 4 the female student was at a gathering inside village a when she was forcibly fondled. the suspect ran off and was last seen running west on o'donovan hall in the southwest quad on campus. that was about 6:00 in the evening. police searched the area and surrounding neighborhoods but couldn't find him. the school sent out a campus alert informing other students

about what happened. they don't believe the man is a georgetown student. >> sherry young is back on the witness stand today at john edwards' criminal trial in north carolina. she is another key witness for prosecutors who are trying to prove that edwards deliberately and illegally used campaign donations to hide his pregnant mistress. as jay gray reports, there was sometimes tearful testimony in the courtroom. >> reporter: sherry young walked into the greensboro federal courthouse and straight to the center of this salacious and controversial trial. >> she was lively, animated, spirited. >> reporter: and did little to hide her animosity for john edwards and his mistress rielle hunter. young told jurors edwards knew about the donations from wealthy friends to hide his affair, assured her they were legal and at times told her angrily, quote, get the money in. get the money in. she testified she was scared when she deposited many of the checks in her family bank account and became emotional describing when she said edwards asked her husband to claim

responsibility for hunter's pregnancy saying that she told her husband, quote, i felt like everything had been dumped in my lap and that she didn't want the responsibility of the campaign, quote, exploded because i wouldn't go along. crying as she told the jury so i ultimately decided to go along with a lie. >> she is personalizing this whole situation for the youngs and showing that it's not really about the youngs. that it was about john edwards and that they sacrificed for him and his presidential aspirations. >> reporter: the defense will likely question that level of sacrifice during a cross examination that will surely focus at least in part on her husband's revelation under oath that the youngs kept a majority of donated money for their personal use. >> they do not want to make it look like they're beating up on her on cross examination. so they are going to be more subtle but they have to negate her assertions that much of the money trail was controlled by

the defense john edwards. >> reporter: a trail of money and deceit that remains at the center of this high profile case. a trail that by her own admission sherry young was forced to navigate during the presidential campaign and now relives during this trial. in greensboro, north carolina, jay gray, news 4. new york city police say the crash that killed seven members of a family happened after the speeding driver clipped the highway divider and damaged a tire. the van plunged into a remote area of the bronx zoo yesterday. everyone inside the van, four adults and plea childrthree chi. the youngest victim was just 3 and the oldest 84. first responders call it one of the worst accident scenes they have seen in decades. george zimmerman's defense lawyer has started a website for his client. he says it's to dispute misinformation about the case. attorney mark o'mara says they want to give a voice to the neighborhood watch captain who is charged in the murder of

trayvon martin. zimmerman claims self-defense in the february shooting, which ignited protests around the world among people who believe it was racially motivated. the site called gz legal case.com also allows the public to ask questions. they also plan to take donations for zimmerman's defense. he is currently out on bail. >> tomorrow marks the one-year anniversary of the raid that killed osama bin laden. president obama gave the go ahead for that daring raid and now republicans are blasting him for a new ad campaign that says as much and more. steve handelsman has our report. >> reporter: running for re-election, president obama's being careful not to praise himself on this emotional anniversary week. a year after he gave the green light to the raid that killed osama bin laden. at a news conference today with the japanese prime minister the president denied excessive celebration. >> i said that i'd go after bin laden if we had a clear shot at him.

and i did. if there are others who have said one thing and now suggest they'd do something else, then i'd go ahead and let them explain it. >> reporter: that is a shot at mitt romney who before the raid questioned spending billions of dollars trying to catch one person. team obama implies romney might not have given the go order. romney insisted he would have and implied it was easy. >> even jimmy carter would have given that order. >> reporter: unlike any previous president mr. obama has escalated devastating drone attacks on al qaeda and the taliban. a new strike announced sunday despite a ban by pakistan. the president's proven to be aggressive. >> how we doing on security? how are we working on the global war on terror? you have to give him a pretty high grade. he has been tougher i think than people would have expected. >> reporter: in a new obama ad, about the bin laden raid is former president bill clinton. >> you hire the president to

make the calls when no one else can do it. >> reporter: republicans call the ad shameful and condemn the president for politicizing the anniversary. this should be a unifying event complained the romney campaign, not used for partisan political advantage. i'm steve handelsman, news 4. president obama's half sister from kenya has written a memoir. in it, she talks about growing up in africa and hearing stories about a brother who lived in america. they didn't meet until she visited the u.s. when they were young adults. she says they clicked instantly in a way that surprised her. >> i initially was afraid i might not like him as a person because i didn't really know him. i knew about him all my life but i didn't know him. so i had to plan around what am i going to do if i don't like this person and there was no question about it. i really felt i gave it too little time. i only gave ten days of spending a month in america because i was so concerned about not liking him. >> auma obama works at care

international in nairobi. the title of her memoir is "and then life happens." caps fans are hoping something good happens in game two against the rangers tonight. >> the caps look to even things up in the stanley cup playoff series. dan hellie has more from madison square garden. >> reporter: game two for the caps and rangers here at madison square garden tonight and the capitals desperately want to win this game. they say especially in the playoffs if you go on the road and you can earn a 1-1 split then you've done your job and given yourself a chance to win the series. game one for the capitals especially braden holtby not so good. he only faced 14 shots and allowed three goals. but here is the good news regarding the rookie goalie. he hasn't lost back-to-back games in 24 starts on the nhl level. it's going to be the caps and the rangers coming up tonight at 7:30. we will have a lot more from here at madison square garden at 5:00 and 6:00. that'll do it for now.

stars opposite kevin kline in the film "darling companion" playing now. >> if you're keeping up with khloe kardashian her spin-off show with husband lamar odom is going away. the reality show couple are saying their second season will be their last season because of odom's fizzling nba career. the dallas mavericks player has been put on the inactive list after a season of career low numbers. he's hired trainers to help him get his game back and that's the only thing he wants to concentrate on right now he says. well, in news 4 your health this afternoon there has been a rapid increase in the number of type 2 diabetes cases in children over the past two decades. and now a new study shows that the disease is harder to treat in children than in adults. researchers followed more than 700 obese and diabetic children and found oral medications that can help treat most adults don't work as well in children. most children need insulin shots to control their blood sugar. researchers think growth spurts and hormonal changes could be

we can't to congratulate our colleague barbara harrison for her achievement over the weekend. the court appointed special advocates for children organization named the first annual barbara harrison child advocacy award. this award, which will carry barbara's name will be given annually to someone in our community who devotes his or her life to children just as barbara has done every single week for so many years with her wednesday's child feature. >> she has put a lot of smiles on a lot of faces. >> my gosh. >> faces that have grown up a lot of them. >> congratulations to her. and turning to the weather, veronica, it is a little on the chilly side today. >> it is. a lot of folks are going, okay. bring back the 80s. bring back the 80s. you know, we had a taste of it

even last month. >> sure. >> we want another taste. >> we wanted to stick around for maybe just a little more than a day or two. we'll take a look outside. see what's going on. we're chilly with clouds across the area right now. we've been in the 50s. it's only been over the last two and three hours that our temperatures jumped into the 60s. we're at 67 degrees right now. with a wind out of the south at eight miles per hour. and, boy oh, boy, i tell you some of that real warm air is not too far away. take a look off to the west. petersburg right now at 08 degrees. that is petersburg, west virginia. 65 in stanton. 61 degrees in charlottesville. 57 degrees in hagerstown. 72 in cumberland. there is your warm air. that's what's going to be creeping eastward during the overnight period. so temperatures will hold steady. maybe rise a couple degrees as we get into the early morning hours. on the radar we are dry but look at this line of not only showers but showers and thunderstorms extending from up around chicago just east of chicago to east of st. louis, missouri, and down

toward memphis. that's the cold front. the warm front? that's the one that's just to the west of us so we get the warm front, first, and some warm air. and the cold front will come through on wednesday giving us probably a slightly better chance for some rain ar round the area. we're cool for 9:00 and 11:00. temperatures dropping to the 50s. 58 degrees by 11:00 p.m. tomorrow morning starting out between 55 and 60 degrees. for your good night wakeup forecast we could have a passing light shower around 11:00 p.m. but a better chance of showers. maybe even a rumble of thunder tomorrow morning at 5:00, 6:00, and 7:00 a.m. there is more of that warmth. morgan town at 85 degrees. 83 in charleston, west virginia. so when that warm air gets here, it's going to be hanging in for a while. so will unfortunately the cloud cover because the weather system will be meandering around the area. tomorrow there it is. the clouds. the green showing where there could be some showers and again thunderstorms. back away for the afternoon. any time after 1:00 tomorrow. here we are 6:00 a.m. wednesday.

start the framework for the next floor. the watershed moment comes as the nation observes the one-year anniversary of the death of osama bin laden who orchestrated the destruction of the original world trade center. >> police are searching for the gunman in a deadly shooting in southeast d.c. it happened just before noon here in the 2200 block of savannah street. investigators tell us a man in his 20s was hit twice by gunfire. >> and stocks lost a little ground on this monday, dragged down by news that spain's economy entered another recession during first quarter of the year. the dow lost about 15 points to close at 13,213. the nasdaq is off 22 and the s&p 500 is off by five. tonight on nbc 4 the semifinals get under way on "the voice" with the final eight contestants ready to perform. >> that includes our own erin willett from gaithersburg, maryland. there is a lot on the line tonight, folks, with four performers going home tomorrow. >> nbc's stephanie stanton is live in hollywood with a preview

of tonight's big show. hey, pat and jim. excitement indeed starting to build here. rehearsals are under way. as you said, it is down to the final eight contestants. hours from now each one will be hitting the stage for their solo performances as this competition moves one step closer to next week's grand finale. for the remaining singers on "the voice" -- >> top eight is no joke, man. it's a serious group of talented people. >> reporter: tonight is like a roll of the dice. >> it's a total crap shoot from this point forward. >> reporter: an unpredictability that adds to the nerves. >> really scared. but i'm looking forward to kind of getting back to what i do. >> reporter: that is the business of trying to impress both the coaches and the viewers at home. >> you feel very vulnerable and very negative in front of the audience and the coaches.

when you feel vulnerable i think it strikes a chord. >> reporter: song choice will be a big part of tonight's strategy. >> i haven't sang a song yet dealing with love or loss or heartache and i can definitely go there. >> reporter: but some will stay with what's worked so far. >> the consistency of delivering some really good power ballads and good tunes. >> there is also the challenge of sending a message through the music. >> trying to convey how emotional this whole thing is for me and how much it means to me. >> reporter: it is a sentiment no doubt shared by alt semifinalists. >> i've staked my claim in this competition and i'm, you know, the end is in sight. >> reporter: tonight's performances will decide how soon that end comes. and tonight we're also going to see joint group bperformances first adam and cee lo then team blake and christina and then once the show is over america will begin to cast its vote to determine the top four finalists

showed me as a true artist, it showed me, you know, dancing and rapping and singing and i feel like the time that was spent on the show people can actually understand it and get a feel for what my album will be like and what my tour will be like and, you know, just have everyone -- everybody want to come out and show that support for me because, you know, i feel like any time you get a platform like that you have to be able to show case who you are as an artist because we're not singing original songs. and you have to be able to show case who you are through those songs. i feel like every song i've done i've show cased my range as a singer, as an artist, as a rapper, and really just show cased all my abilities. >> moses stone says he is rooting for erin willett since she is from the d.c. area as well. he is hoping someone from team christina wins. he is a little torn there. >> i'll bet he is. he sounded good on that. i like that. >> he sounded great.

>> go to i-tunes. folks in one denver, colorado suburb woke up this morning to find an unusual visitor prowling the neighborhood. >> a 300-pound black bear was seen wandering their manicured lawns and back yards. a news helicopter captured the bear as he wandered down from the mountains into this populated residential area. he walked around several yards, at one point climbed up a tree and hopped a fence. authorities roped off parts of the neighborhood for the bear's safety and to keep residents safe too. yeah there is that. wildlife officials used a tranquilizer to subdue the bear after it started to get hostile. after about an hour they captured and relocated the bear. >> stumble into the back yard with sleep in your eyes and run into that. >> no. there is more to come this afternoon on news 4 at 4:00. a woman explains how she survived several days lost in the woods. >> people call her the miracle mom. why she needed 35 gallons in

a utah woman survived four days in the wilderness after getting lost while hiking a remote desert trail last week. the 59-year-old broke her leg after jumping off a ledge and was unable to make it back to the car before dark. she is an avid outdoors woman and physician's assistant. from her hospital bed she credits her survival skills and medical training for keeping her

>> all right. we'll do it. >> thanks, veronica. now the story of a miracle mom. a san antonio, texas woman who survived the traumatic delivery of her daughter. >> gina walker had a rare medical condition and when she gave birth back in february her planned c-section ended in catastrophic hemorrhage that took 35 gallons of blood to pull her through. ann curry has her story. >> reporter: for gina walker her third pregnancy was difficult from the beginning. >> they thought i had miscarried. found out in fact that i still was pregnant. and then just about every week after that was just bad news week after week that i had different complications. >> reporter: doctors diagnosed her with a rare condition called placenta perceta that occurs in about one of every 50,000 pregnancies putting the mother in danger. >> it's a condition where the placenta can implant into the lower portion of the uterus and can invade the bladder.

>> reporter: despite the complications, gina delivered a healthy baby girl by c-section. to treat her condition doctors immediately started performing a hysterectomy but gina began to bleed out. >> when we delivered the baby, we encountered bleeding that was more than we expected. our anesthesia doctors were informed of this and began immediately trans fusing the blood products we had available. >> reporter: it took nearly 117 liters of blood, roughly 35 gallons, to save gina's life. a massive effort by doctors as well as family and friends who rushed to the hospital to donate. >> when i started noticing cooler after cooler of blood that had my wife's name on it, you know, up and down the hallways constantly, that's when i started to get worried. >> we knew we had an ob patient up there. we knew there was a baby involved. we were just, it was like we were just -- everybody was just working so hard and so fast to

involved in a multimillion dollar legal battle over his famous stiletto shoes with the red soles. today he defended the lawsuit. he claims fellow french fashion house eve st. lauren stepped on his toes by rolling out its own set of red bottomed heels last year so is suing for trademark infringement and today the designer said he is not trying to monopolize the color red but is trying to defend his specific ownership of red on a specific part of the shoe, the soles. he added eve st. lauren should know better because its brand gucci claims ownership of the red and green stripes in its logo. a man alleged to be behind a hammer attack is behind bars held without bond today. we hear from one of the victims attacked while walking his dog. he told news 4's darcy spencer he wishes he had come forward sooner. >> i keep going and god will look out for me. >> reporter: this little man

walks his little dog twice a day in his northwest washington neighborhood but last thursday afternoon the walk turned into a traumatizing event. he was struck in the head police say by a teen suspected in a series of hammer attacks. >> he walked by and he said how you doing, sir, with a smile. i said, how you doing? and before i can turn to see what my dog was like i'm doing now, i was struck with an object. >> reporter: the victim who doesn't want to show his face or give his name was walking in the 200 block of ingraham street in northwest d.c. he says he was knocked down and out. he regained consciousness several minutes later. he was hit on his ear and the side of his head. his forehead was cut when he fell to the ground and he has a scrape on his arm. >> i was slightly unconscious. i still could see and i didn't know which way he went or he got away quick. >> reporter: the suspect in the assault is 19-year-old michael davis. he was arrested later that

evening after he allegedly attacked a 19-year-old woman with a claw hammer fracturing her skull. that weapon has been recovered. the victim did not report the crime until the next day and according to these charging documents police found the rubberized handle of a hammer that had been broken off near the scene of the attack. the victim says he did not call police because he felt okay and it was time for him to pick up two children from school. >> i'm sorry i didn't come forward. earlier in that day. but i just had my hands full and i did give it a lot of thought, you know. i'm just glad no one else is hurried. >> reporter: davis is charged in two attacks but is suspected in three more. one claimed the life of a colorado tourist. all of them happened over just a few days in the petworth neighborhood. >> all i can say is i hope they got the right man. >> reporter: darcy spencer, news 4. next at 5:00 local college
