and now from washington's leading news station, this is "news4 midday." good morning, everyone and welcome to "news4 midday," i'm barbara harrison. it's tuesday, may 1st, 2012. we begin this morning with breaking news out of cleveland, five people are behind bars accuse of plotting to blow up a bridge. fbi arrested the man after surveillance in a sting operation. they say the men also considered toppling the signs of banks from high-rises in downtown cleveland. federal officials say there was never any danger to the public and the five are describe as

anarchists. right now protesters are trying to re-energize the occupy wall street movement with demonstrations around the world. they're called may day rallies and one is happening today in d.c. organizers are calling for strikes against work, banks or anything that promotes commerce. news4's melissa malay is live with more. >> take a lack at this map, they're holding demonstrations in more than 120 city across the world, including here in d.c. protesters say this will be the most visible effort in the u.s. since occupy canvas came down in the fall this is the occupy movement's may day website that has been streaming video from sites. thousands of people are participating, they're calling these may day rallies part of a global general strike to protest unfair labor practices. and of course, rally for higher

d bethesda. trying to determine what strong odor sickened people inside the building, montgomery fire and ems crews are on the scene. the montgomery county school superintendant is blasting reports that he says imply a cheating scandal in the county. highland elementary in silver spring is one of 27 schools nationwide cited by the recent atlanta "journal-constitution" investigation into possible cheating. the school made a significant turn-around in recent years, even earning a blue ribbon award in 2009, the highest honor from the u.s. department of education. the atlanta newspaper questions the success in part because of the students come from poor households that don't speak english. >> we have experts who looked at the swings in the school scores and said, they are highly, highly improperable. >> there's never been an allegation of cheating. there are no strange erase yurs or anything like that they have must have another agenda and they're trying to unfortunately exploit our kids and the hard

work of our staff to make their own point. >> the "atlanta journal constitution" previously uncovered a cheating scandal in atlanta. school official there is initially denied the allegations, which which eventually proved to be true. the school claims it used the same methodology to expose cheating here. storm center 4 meteorologist tom kierein joins us with the first forecast for midday, hey, tom. >> we had quite a soaking rain around 11:00 this morning or so, right now a lot of the rain is now moving away from the area. and we're beginning to dry out. and as we take a look at the temperatures around the region and the view from space, here is the latest view right now. some clouds have moved back in after we had the rain go through. we had a little sun. but now it's clouding up again. that's the view over the mid-atlantic region now and all of the area in white is cloud cover where you see the darker

colors, that's where the sun is shining and there's quite a bit of sunshine in the mountains and the lower part of the bay. look at the temperatures, it's getting balmy now, reagan national now is up to 75 degrees, richmond, up to 77. all the area in yellow is well into the 70s, we're going to hit near 80 degrees in the metro area, may even hit the low to mid 80s. to our south in southern maryland and parts of the northern neck, through central virginia. through the rest of the afternoon, around the metro area, we'll have our temperatures holding steady in the 70s to around 80 degrees and the small chance of an isolated thunderstorm popping up. that would be late afternoon. and we'll have wind out of the northwest getting a little blustery, too. maybe more rain in the middle of the week, and a big warm-up on the way. a summer-like forecast coming up. >> tom, thank you. let's head out to the roads to see what the midday traffic is looking like with danella sealock. >> good morning, barbara, it was a tough morning, but right now things are looking much better.

if you're crossing over the 14th street bridge yesterday around this time we saw road work slowing you down. but you're clear making your way into the city. on 395 no reports to report northbound as you drive 56 miles per hour, not bad at all. crossing over the american legion bridge, making your way into virginia, nice and clear, actually in both directions across the american legion bridge. and heading into virginia from the dulles toll road to the interchange, traveling at 55 miles per hour. not bad, barbara, back to you. thanks, danella. new this morning, two men are dead from two separate stabbings. the first stabbing happened around 1:30 this morning in the 4500 block of quarles street northeast and then less than an hour later, a man was stabbed at fifth and florida avenue northwest in d.c. news4's tracee wilkins has more. >> reporter: d.c. police say when they arrived to the scene, they found a victim stabbed

behind the wheel of his car. now the question is, what happened before that fatal stabbing. police say they were called to the 500 block of florida avenue, for the report of a car crash. once on the scene, they found a man stabbed. in the neck. police say the man had an altercation up the street that resulted in the stabbing. he got into his car and apparently lost control a short distance away. it's easy to see the path of the car last night this fence was taken out and you come down this way, you can see where the lightpole was also taken out and the car just keeps going. until it stops after running into this restaurant. the car hit the newly-opened shaw's tavern in the shaw community. even though the crash was a violent one, very little damage was left on outside of the restaurant. crews have already started making repairs on the lamppost that was damaged. this morning, detectives returned to the restaurant, hoping that its cameras may have video that can help solve the case. at this point, police are only

describing the victim as a 33-year-old man from upper marlboro. they're still looking for their suspect. although when this initially happened, there was a suspect description of a tall man seen leaving the scene. they're hoping they'll find more evidence to help them figure out who is responsible. in northwest, i'm tracee wilkins, news4. police are trying to determine who stabbed a man in the 4500 block of quarles street northeast. officers found the man suffering from a stab wound to the stomach. he was unconscious and not breathing and later died at the hospital. our crew was there when police took someone into custody. police are not saying just yet if the man faces any charges. today, jury selection begins in the first trial related to a series of stabbings that left five men dead and 13 injured in three states, including virginia. ilias abu hazam will stand trial for the stabbing of minor in

flint, michigan. blood was discovered inside luggage he tried to leave with for his native israel in august of 2010. he's charged with attempted murder in toledo, ohio, accused of stabbing several men in the leesburg area. leesburg police also suspect him in an unsolved murder in 2009. our time is nine minutes after 11:00. coming up in the next segment of "news4 midday," one year later, a look inside the situation room during the final moments of the raid that killed osama bin laden. plus outrage over the decision to euthanize a healthy baby bear. and a new study that says it's better to be safe than i was paying too much with cable.

we're learning more about the raid that killed osama bin laden now one year later. navy s.e.a.l. team 6 stormed bin laden's compound in pakistan and killed the man who carried out the september 11th attacks. top government and military leaders gathered in the white house situation room and waited for the outcome of the raid. michael leiter was the director of the national counterterrorism center at the time. this morning on the "today show," he described the tension in the situation room when the group learned that the u.s.

helicopter crashed during the raid. >> it was actually remarkably quiet. i think there was enormous amount of confidence in the troops who were doing this mission. everyone gasped, but then about a minute later, as we saw everyone get off and admiral bill mccraven who was the commander of the raid say everybody was off, everybody was okay. say all right, we're still on this. >> materials found inside bin laden's compound showed he had a hit list of people to assassinate. including president obama and general david petraeus. the white house released some of bin laden's last writings seized in the raid. the u.s. army will post them online this week. well once again, the wife of a former aide to john edwards is expected to take the stand in his campaign corruption trial. sherry young broke down as she testified yesterday. she cried while describing edwards asking her husband, andrew young, to claim responsibility for fathering his mistress's baby. she said she was scared when she

deposited money from a donor in her family's bank account. she said the money was used to take care of the pregnant mistress and hide the affair. prosecutors are trying to show that edwards deliberately tried to hide the money and the affair as he ran for the white house in 2008. new today, a judge ruled a hotel maid's lawsuit against the former head of the international monetary fund. the suit claims that dominique strauss-kahn tried to rape her. he denies doing anything violent in their encounter. his lawyers argue the case should have been dismissed because he had diplomatic immunity. but the judge ruled against him. prosecutors dropped criminal charges last summer. about 100 secret service agents begin two days of ethics training tomorrow in response to the growing process constitution scandal. the agency had planned for 28

agents to undergo training, but more agents have been added. it's not clear whether any of the 12 agents involved in the scandal in colombia had the ethics training. eight employees have resigned or left the agency since the incident happened right before the president's trip for the summit of the americas last month. three agents have been cleared of serious misconduct. in decision 2012 this morning, former presidential candidates are making some demands of mitt romney before they back him for president. rick santorum says he wants the former governor to include priorities of conservatives in his campaign. meanwhile, newt gingrich is looking to repair his reputation with the gop and pay down millions in campaign debt with romney's help. santorum and romney plan to meet friday to discuss his requests. romney is beating the president to the punch in virginia. romney announced that he will

clouds passing over loudoun county yesterday afternoon. here's the view from space, here comes the cloud deck coming through right over washington right now. but there's some sunshine here in southern maryland. as well as much of virginia, from the northern neck to fredericksburg. and then a cloud deck from there up toward front royal. but shenandoah valley, they have some sunshine breaking out and farther west as well. a beautiful sunny spring day under way. the first day of may. and under the clouds, the temperatures warming up beautifully. right now, montgomery county, arlington, fairfax, prince george's counties in the low 70s. mid 70s in southern maryland, northern neck, eastern shore. low to mid 70s, shenandoah and the mountains. as we go over the next 48 hours, there's a small chance of an isolated thundershower popping up this afternoon. otherwise a few clouds coming through. then as we get into tomorrow, i think there's going to be a little greater chance of maybe an afternoon shower or thundershower. might have a morning shower tomorrow.

then a little sun in and out. similar to today, but probably no thunder or lightning tomorrow morning. during the afternoon we may, as well as into parts of wednesday evening, by 9:30, 10:00 wednesday evening. the area in color is a zone of potential showers, maybe a little thunder. after that, as we get into the rest of the afternoon, we'll have just a smaller chance maybe of a shower and some thundershowers, and wednesday night, too. so off and on showers and a few clouds coming through from time to time is going to be the story for the next several days. but the big story, the warmup, near 80 degrees this afternoon. winds out of the northwest gusting around 20 miles per hour. overnight, we'll have quite a bit of cloudiness. temperatures drop from the mid 70s around sunset to around mid 60s by midnight. tomorrow morning, near 60 degrees, a greater chance of an afternoon shower or thunderstorm. highs reaching the mid 80s tomorrow afternoon. by dawn on thursday, down to the mid 60s. and again, partly sunny on thursday, but another warm day,

where people are wearing hats. are they in again? >> they're in again. although in washington, d.c. among my customer base, there's a loyal customer base who has always worn hats. and that's been consistent for weather and for events, but now, it's bigger than ever because it's very much in fashion. >> well i know that we've been told, especially over the last ten years, we should wear hats in the sun to protect ourselves from skin cancer. but a hat like this, that's another thing. are people buying hats like this to wear, i guess to church, but where else? >> they're buying them like hotcakes, it's amazing. they wear them to church. they wear them to events like the trust for the national mall luncheon, which is coming up on thursday. garden parties, a little bit of everything and some people, very often i hear people say, i need to create an event to wear a hat like this to. >> let's look at some hats. >> this is a fascinator. >> this is sort of a hat

fascinator, a little bit of a hybrid. but this style of course was very much popularized by kate middleton, it had been happening before that. but it sort of reached everybody's consciousness. this is a very big version and here's a little slightly more subtle version. >> she's still wearing that kind of hat? >> yes. >> what's so great about this kind of hat, it's fun, it's festive, but it's not so much of a commitment to your outfit that you can't greet people and hug. >> what are some other hats in style? >> cloches is a traditional style that works well on most everyone's face. and cloche is a french word that means bell. now with "downton abbey" shows

popularize this style. >> are you supposed to take a hat off if you're invited to lunch and sitting in a restaurant. should you take the hat off? >> the hat etiquette for women is that the hat is part of your outfit. you would leave it on if that was your outfit for the day and you go out to lunch, you leave the hat on for the luncheon or the wedding. for men, the hat comes off inside. for women, i would say, i often feel a little uncomfortable in a hat for a length of time. so usually i think you can follow your comfort level. but by etiquette you can leave it on. >> i think a lot of us feel a bit inconspicuous by leading a hat on inside. >> that is called a lamp shade, that kind of comes down with a wider brim. >> this is called a kentucky derby type hat, the portrait hat. >> this is a style that works well when you're outside. really to shade you. but it's also very dramatic. and then you can always

right now an "news4 midday," the occupy wall street movement is going global once again. this is new york city, and one of 120 may day rallies going on today around the world. demonstrators are calling for a strike against business, schools and just about any activity that promotes commerce. members of the occupy d.c.

will hold a may day festival and rally today. they also plan to march to the white house this afternoon. news4's megan mcgrath is live at mcpherson square with a preview of what's going to happen there. hi, megan. >> good morning, barbara. today may 1st is known as may day, it's also known as international workers day. the occupy d.c. protesters are using this day to stage a rally and then later this evening, they're going to march to the white house. now we're expecting things to get under way at 3:30 this afternoon in meridian park at 15th and euclid street in northwest washington. there will be what's described as a family-friendly festival with music, workshops and other activities. sometime after 6:00, crowd will march to the white house. depending on how large the crowd is, we could see an impact with respect to rush hour traffic. but organizers say they are taking to the streets to make a point. >> actually, we're the ones with the power. we are the people. and today is a day where we, to

remember, today is a day to remember that all power does lie in our hands not in the hands of the bosses, the corporations and those with the power. >> now occupy d.c.'s presence here in mcpherson square is much smaller than it was when the movement started. there have been many tents that have been removed over the last several months by police. so it remains to be seen whether spring will re-energize this movement, remains to be seen how many people will be participating in today's raly. now police have said they do not have any plans to shut down streets as the crowd walks through. so in terms of how rush hour will be impacted, we're going to have to wait and see. reporting live from mcpherson square, megan mcgrath, news4. thank you, megan. the d.c. council will vote on a plan this afternoon to repay workers for furloughed days, more than 20,000 employees did not get holiday pay four times last year. the council imposed the furlough days to make up for a budget shortfall.

but after all of the spending cuts the district ended up with a surplus. there's some debate that $22 million to repay the employees should go toward a proposed tax increase and prevent cuts to social service programs. d.c. police are searching for a missing 13-year-old girl, alexis mccain. she was last seen on sunday along anacostia road in southeast washington, if you see her, please call police immediately. a teenager who survived a hammer attack says she appreciates the officers who answered her cries for help. the 19-year-old woman left the hospital yesterday, she is recovering from a head wound, she asked us to conceal her identity. she tells news4 she was walking home in the petworth neighborhood thursday night when a man hit her in the head with a claw hammer. she yelled for help. officers happened to be in the area and she waved to them as they approached. >> i'm very fortunate to be alive.

and it's very thankful and grateful that the police was there when everything happened. >> police arrested 19-year-old michael davis, they're questioning him to see if he's connected to similar attacks in the neighborhood. davis remains in custody. a judge denied him bail. a man accused of killing his girlfriend and his unborn baby remains in jail pending the outcome of a competency hearing. prosecutors charge 22-year-old nathan rodgers with first-degree murder in the death of 23-year-old jasmine moss. police found her body in the back of a car last friday. police say rodgers confessed to the killing. at the time of the murder, rodgers was under house arrest. prosecutors say he did not leave his home. prosecutors would now like to find out if he had an accomplice. they haven't told us if they're looking for one at this time. virginia wildlife officials are facing criticism for euthanizing a four-pound bear

cub. someone found the baby bear along the side of a road in southwest virginia. the bear was healthy and didn't have a scratch on it. wildlife officials say they put the cub down because they couldn't find anyone to rehabilitate the bear back into the wild. but at least one organization in tennessee says it was never contacted and has plenty of room. virginia authorities say they didn't feel comfortable giving the bear to that group. because of a change in leadership. however, the tennessee group says a new curator is a nationally well-respected person and they can't understand virginia's hesitation to send the bear to them. the national zoo artificially inseminated a giant panda. zoo staff plan to monitor the female's hormone levels and do ultrasounds in the months ahead to see if she's pregnant. you may remember the panda couple produced a cub in 2005

producers crashed a boeing 727 in the name of science. look at that. discovery channel says it's part of a new documentary series called "curiosity." the jet was deliberately crashed in the mexican desert. no passengers were on the plane. instead, it was packed with crash test dummies. cameras recorded the crash from inside the plane, on the ground and from other planes as well and from the ejecting pilot's helmet. there is controversy. some say the crash was all for show. and that faa officials weren't even allowed on the site. unmanned aircraft could soon be flying over the skies of northern virginia. fairfax county police say they've considered using drones to monitor traffic. other law enforcement agencies in other parts of the country are already using the technology. usually associated with the military. a company in manassas that makes drones said the aircraft are lightweight, rechargeable and cost efficient. >> like in a lot of areas, the

technology moves quickly and the regulations and the sort of social adaptation have to catch up. >> one type of smaller drone costs about $2,000. aside from law enforcement, dr. langford says he sees other groups using the aircraft. including scientists and even news crews. well in news for your health today, it's the age-old question, should women in their 40s routinely get mammograms to detect breast cancer? two new studies say yes. mammograms in your 40s have been debated due to a large number of false positives that could lead to unnecessary and expensive treatments. now researchers say the benefits from getting a mammogram every two years outweigh the risks. >> the risks themselves are radiation. because every time you get a mammogram, it is a radiation risk. the fact that they'll find a false positive. something that's there, that isn't to be worried about, but is going to lead to a biopsy. increased money spent, pain to

last week we celebrated take your kids to work day. now they're telling us take your dog to work may help lower your stress. that according to a new study from virginia commonwealth university. researchers say dog owners who brought their pets to work had less stress throughout the day. compared to workers who didn't bring their dogs to work or have pets. the study also found employees who took their dogs to work felt

month, ford sales are up 5%, but chrysler's auto sales are up 20% year over year. and c bs kate kelly first reported, delta airlines confirms it's getting into the oil business, buying a refinery near philadelphia fund-raiser phillips 66 for $150 million. delta will get a $30 million subsidy for the state of pennsylvania, for job creation at the plant which was idled last year. bp will supply crude and delta will exchange gas and other refined products for jet fuel. delta says it will supply 80% of the jet fuel needs in the u.s. it spent nearly $12 billion on fuel just last year. the phone-hacking scandal surrounding news corporation's ceo rupert murdoch is making headlines as a parliamentary committee releases a final report concluding that murdoch is quote not a fit person to exercise stewardship of a major international company.

combing or styling the hair, to alert the customer to go see the dermatologist. >> one of the most virulent cancers is skin cancer and very often, that's where you'll have it start is in the scalp. >> melanoma, one of the most common areas is head, neck, trunk and extremities. so it can occur internally, but the ones that are visible on the outside of the skin are easily detectible and there's a better cure rate if we can detect them and remove them from the skin. >> how are you getting the word out to hair dressers that they should do that? i guess we should tell our hair stylists. >> the dermatology community, we've been proactive in trying to alert different areas, like stylists, different places where people go and get their hair done. because it's not just color, it can be relaxers, it can be people who go get their hair braided or what have you. to be on alert to find any of

these types of abnormal, unusual-looking lesions. >> should you use sunscreen on your scalp? >> if you are thinning, yes, you should. and there are some shampoos that actually have an spf in them. so men who are going balding, where there's a balding process or women, should wear sunscreen on the scalp. we see a lot of skin cancers on the scalp. >> talk to us about how to pick a sunscreen. >> there's a lot of different vehicles here, and i brought a selection. but for one, i think under-application is the biggest problem with most people. so on the average, these are about three, four-ounce tubes or bottles of sunscreen. this is the amount you should put on in the sun-exposed areas. >> that's a lot. >> that's a lot. >> that's about the size of a golf ball or enough in a shot glass. >> this is for, on your body. >> the face, the arms, the legs,
