the music industry is mourning a big loss today. i'm jim handly. >> i'm pat lawson muse. one of the beasty boys is dead. ♪ rapper adam yelk also known as mca has died at the age of 47. >> russell simmons first announced his death on his website global grind.com. no cause of death has been announced. in 2009 he revealed he had a cancerous tumor. >> in addition to directing iconic music videos for his fans yelk is credited as a pioneer in hip hop music. the beastie boys arguably pushed rap into the main stream in the 1980s. the band formed in high school. they have since sold more than 40 million records. yelk is survived by his wife and one daughter. now to the weather we could get some stormy weather this

afternoon and this evening. >> this weekend get ready for more rain. storm 4 meteorologist veronica johnson is here with your first forecast. >> steamy and warm out there. you probably noticed the higher humidity and, yes, we could have some thunderstorms some of which could be strong coming our way over the next couple hours. as far as the radar goes there are a few showers around fauquier county and prince william county but we could see this area fill in with more scattered showers and again thunderstorms here over the next couple hours. it will take us through 7:00, 9:00, and 11:00 p.m. as far as the cloud cover goes, we've been seeing breaks in the cloud cover off to our north and west. that is exactly where temperatures have gotten a chance to really warm. 86 degrees in cumberland, maryland. it's 84 in martinsburg and 81 degrees in winchester. 84 right in the district right now and 85 in fredericksburg. that with the higher humidity and the same old weather system that's been meandering around the area and, yes, you have the ingredients for more storms. like the ones we had early this

morning and like some of the storms we had late last night. boy, they really delivered a punch with a lot of lightning, heavy rain, and ponding on area roads. and there's even the possibility of some hail with some of the storms that could come through, some small hail and high winds. so for 5:00 i think our skies will be partly cloudy. your temperature 77 degrees. then by 7:00 scattered storms in the forecast. more of them filling in for 7:00, 8:00, 9:00, and 11:00 p.m. temperatures will be dropping down to the low 70s by that time. we'll talk about our weekend, so important, coming up. i'll give you the details on when i think the rain is going to be moving through back to you. >> parts of michigan are recovering from overnight storms that left some areas under water. heavy rains flooded roads in flint, stranding some drivers in their cars. a trucker had to be rescued by officials using a small boat. parts of two interstates were shut down. luckily, there have been no reports of serious injuries. >> police have now found the body of the man behind that

deadly shooting at a maryland church. the shooting left a secretary dead and a copastor critically injured in howard county. police tell us a homeless man pulled the trigger because he was angry with the church. it happened yesterday afternoon at st. peter's episcopal church in ellicott city. officers say 56-year-old douglas franklin jones opened fire before killing himself in the woods. officers say he frequently used the church food bank but had recently become belligerent. the shooting has left the local episcopal community reeling. news 4's derrick ward will have more coming up tonight at 5:00. there are new sexual abuse allegations against dominic strauss-kahn involving a hotel here in d.c. french investigators are studying accusations that he may have been involved in a rape during a sex party in 2010. the party happened at the "w" hotel in downtown washington according to the "new york times." strauss-kahn's lawyers say their

client denies any violence against women. the french economist already faces a trial in new york over a hotel maid who is suing him for sexual assault. rough day on wall street following the jobs report. the dow closed down 169 points, the worst week all this year. the april jobs report shows a slight in unemployment rates. at first glance that would seem like good news, but analysts say it is not. still, president obama and mitt romney both tried to use the reports to their advantage. steve handelsman has our story. >> reporter: as the mostly bad news on jobs broke president obama tried positive spin. >> that our economy created 130,000 private sector jobs in april. >> reporter: 15,000 government jobs were lost. mitt romney focused on the down side. >> as a matter of fact, only 115,000 net new jobs were created. that was well beneath what it was expected to be. it should have been in the hundreds of thousands but it wasn't. >> reporter: romney's right on

the april jobs number and on the problem. the unemployment rate dropped 0.1 to 8.1% not because more people got hired. more americans gave up looking for jobs. they weren't counted. but some of them retired and some economists see solid job gains just ahead. >> it wouldn't be at all surprising if unemployment were definitively below 8% by the end of the year. >> reporter: with that number over 8 no u.s. president running for re-election has ever won. barack obama knows it. >> there are still a lot of folks out of work which means we have to do more. >> reporter: mitt romney knows it. >> this is a time when america wants to have someone who knows what it takes to create jobs and get people working again. >> reporter: will unemployment drop below 8% in june, july, august? >> that has to change over the summer. it can't wait until the fall to impact the election. >> reporter: a close race that could be decided by 0.1 change in the jobs number. and the so-called headline

number could have the biggest impact. will it be 8 like it is today? 8.1%, or something in the 7s? i'm steve handelsman, news 4. one of john edwards' most generous donors felt like she was being used. that was just some of the testimony jurors heard today at edwards' corruption trial. he arrived at the courthouse in greensboro, north carolina this. interior designer ryan huffman took the stand today, a friend of wealthy donor rachel bunny mellon. he said mellon was very angry when she was asked to give millions of dollars in additional donations to edwards in 2008 even after presidential campaign was coming to an end. prosecutors are trying to prove that edwards deliberately and illegally used some of that money to cover up his affair with rielle hunter. plan for a busy weekend in our area with metro track work and three major events drawing big crowds. the caps and rangers face off at the phone booth.

the nats are hosting the rival phillies, and the avon walk for breast cancer happens this weekend. add to that metro plans to close four metro stations. news 4's tracee wilkins reports from the green belt metro station. >> reporter: every metro line is going to be impacted by the work this weekend. here at green belt station it is one of the many on the green line that will be closed so folks are going to have to use shuttles to get out of green belt. we talked to riders this morning and they're saying that while they know the work has to be done, timing couldn't be worse. they won't be running trains at green belt, college park, prince georges plaza and west hyattsville stations. they're going to have shuttles taking folks back and forth because of metro track work. but this is the weekend for the nats game, the capitals game, race for the cure. >> i was not aware of that. >> reporter: so now folks are scrambling to figure out the most effective way to get in and out of d.c. this weekend. you still going to use metro

shuttles or what do you think you'll do? >> i might drive to d.c. because i'm just going in to work for a while. >> reporter: you're going to the caps game? >> right. we're heading down. i guess we are going to take the shuttle. we talked about going someplace else to park but we're not really sure. >> reporter: metro will install what is known as a number 8 switch, a safety measure recommended by the ntsb after metro's deadly crash in 2009. >> working really only over three-day weekends because it is so complex you have to take both tracks out of service, bring in heavy machinery and start ripping out tracks on both sides. >> reporter: due to the green line track work metro says yellow lines will operate between mount vernon square and huntington only and every other line throughout the system will experience some single tracking. >> it is a bad weekend to do track work obviously but i think they schedule it so far in advance they don't really realize -- who knew all this stuff was going to be happening? and the track work needs to be done. >> i'd rather do it over the weekend when people aren't trying to get to work as opposed to activities you don't have to

take the metro. >> reporter: speaking of work -- >> maybe i'll take the weekend off. >> reporter: that's always an option. >> that'll work. >> reporter: the bottom line is if you plan on using the system this weekend make sure to give yourself lots of time and maybe even plan on leaving an hour earlier just in case and, remember, times like this you're definitely going to need your patience. in green belt, tracee wilkins, news 4. the town rocked by the shooting death of trayvon martin is welcoming a new interim police chief. captain richard myers formally stepped into the job today. myers is a 35-year law enforcement veteran. he says his first task will be to quickly rebuild relationships between td police and the community. there's been outrage since martin was shot to death by george zimmerman while zimmerman was on community patrol watch. >> we have a chance here in sanford to make something good out of something bad. we have a chance to draw strength and energy in memory

and honor of a young man whose life ended so unexpectedly. >> reporter: myers' most recent job was chief of police in colorado springs. >> the family of former nfl star junior seau plans to donate his brain for research. seau killed himself on wednesday at his california home. the 12-time pro bowler shot himself in the chest. the family says they are not speculating whether concussions are a factor in the suicide. they want to do more research on head injuries. seau played 20 seasons in the nfl for the chargers, dolphins, and the patriots. yahoo's new ceo is under fire over questions about his resume. chief executive scott thompson has been with yahoo since january. his resume lists a degree in accounting and computer science from stone hill college near boston. yesterday yahoo clarified that thompson's degree is in accounting only. today the board of directors said it will review the

for years he guided single men and women in their quest for love. >> now it looks like the host of tv's "the bachelor" is about to become a bachelor himself. chris harrison and his wife gwen are ending their 18-year marriage. he has hosted the dating show since its debut in 2002. in a joint statement the couple said although they've made what they describe as an incredibly difficult decision they look forward still to raising their children together. they have two. beyonce has won plenty of music awards we know but a journalism prize is something new. the new york chapter of the national association of black journalists has awarded the singer for a magazine story she wrote. it was called, "eat, play, love" and was published in "essence" magazine last year. the article talks about how

beyonce took a break from music and changed her life. beyonce and husband jay-z had their first child back in january. if air one of demi moore's 5 million followers on twitter, you may have already noticed she has a new handle. >> she sure does. the 49-year-old actress is no longer at mrs. kutcher. on thursday moore changed her twitter name to at just demi. back in november she and her hubby of six years ashton kutcher announced the end of their marriage. since the split moore asked her followers to help her choose a new name so yesterday she tweeted that it was hard finding a name that was fun and available. now she says she'll stick with laer. ♪ >> she rocked the house this week. some tough competition heading to the finale of "the voice" last week. that was juliet sims the finalist for team cee lo. cee lo has been a celebrity mentor on the show for the past

two years. yesterday he made a big announcement saying in part he'll stick with the show as long as it's fresh, new, and exciting. we also heard from the final four contestants who agree coming this far is a dream come true but also a lot of hard work. >> i believe we're all part of four songs each, so that's a lot of time with the band, a lot of time with our coaches, a lot of time with our ipods. it's sort of labor intensive but at this point this is really what we've all been striving for not just in this competition but, you know, collectively over the years. tony luca, juliet sims, jermaine paul, and chris mann beat out 20 other contestants to make it to the finals. our own angie goff will be joining them in los angeles monday and tuesday with live reports from the finale of "the voice." don't miss angie's live reports here on news 4 at 4:00 and on news 4 at 11:00 starting on monday. "vogue" magazine is making a

new fashion statement these days. models who are too thin or too young will no longer grace its pages. the 19 editors of "vogue" magazine's around the world have made a pact to project healthier images of beauty. they will agree that they will no longer knowingly work with models who appear to have eating disorders, models under the age of 16 have also been banned. casting directors will be asked to check i.d.s at photo shoots and fashion shows. the french edition of "vogue" came under fire last summer for an issue that featured a 10-year-old model in seductive poses. there will be plenty of fashion to watch for at the kentucky derby over the weekend. some ladies in attendance plan their fancy hats months ahead of time. >> they're pulling them out. the countdown is on but the horses are what the main event is all about we know. even though the race isn't until tomorrow, the stands are already filling up today. nbc's tracie potts has more from

churchill downs. >> reporter: derby fans getting an early look at kentucky's first race this weekend. the oats or as they call it here lilies for the fillies. don't even bother showing up without a lot of hat-itude. >> it is a nice time to get out and celebrate with all my friends. >> reporter: derby wear ranges from the gorgeous to the outrageous. this guy is hoping not to step in it but doesn't mind wearing it. >> my brother-in-law thinks a whole lot of me so he made a hat to just kind of demonstrate just what he thinks about me. >> reporter: david came here hatless on purpose. >> i wanted to wear the original derby hat. i've got plenty of straw hats. i just didn't have one of these. >> reporter: there is derby art, derby food, derby love, and, oh, yes, the horses. fans bet $165 million last year. >> my grandma always told me you got to put five to win on the 5 horse in the fifth race. >> reporter: so he did. now he's waiting. waiting and they're off.

a group of transit workers collected a lottery check today. it's a whopper. the workers in philly won $107 million and the powerball jackpot. every single one of them went to work the next day and believe it or not they all plan to continue working. that's what they're saying today anyway. >> right. >> each winner will get a little more than $2 million before

taxes. >> there will be a followup story a year from now. >> yeah. >> some island. >> good for them. >> yes. we are watching the skies for some possible stormy weather? >> right. from now until 11:00 p.m. we could see some storms fire. i think it is going to be widespread storms now because of the storms we had this morning. they kind of took a lot of the energy out of the atmosphere, you know, kind of wore it out a little bit. 84 is our temperature right now. it has been sticky today. yeah, the dew point temperature, what we look at that indicator, has been over 60 degrees. however, since yesterday, right, 63, in fact a current reading right now with a northwest wind at 7 miles per hour and we have a mostly cloudy sky. mentioned the rain earlier today. behind me some of those rainfall totals. mount airy, maryland 0.05 inch of rain. manassas, virginia 0.# 11. annapolis, 0.12 and chantilly, virginia just over 0.25 inch of rain. we are getting the much needed

rainfall but at a price with some strong thunderstorms and the possibility there is still of severe weather during the evening hours. south of warranton around fredericksburg is where the biggest cluster is right now, this one cell headed toward spotsylvania there in the next 11 minutes probably bringing heavy rain. there will be some lightning and even a small chance of hail on toward areas of claiborne in the next 43 minutes, the next 54 minutes toward dalton. so that's where strongest storm is right now. we could see more filling in up until about 11:00 p.m. our temperatures upper 60s to low 70s. for tomorrow morning, mid 60s to upper 60s and i do think most of the area is going to be dry. the showers for tomorrow morning should be just south of the area around charlottesville. here is a look at what's going on. we've got the warm front, warm air pushing through. we stayed again also pretty cloudy today so we didn't have highs soaring into the 80s but for tomorrow more warm air out ahead of that front but also more clouds so it is going to be

another sticky, humid day where our temperatures are going to be in the 70s. notice a lot of rain with finally a big push of the weather front coming through. so for tomorrow afternoon, heads up again. any time after about 1:00 p.m. tomorrow, sunday now is looking great though. we get the sunshine in here as the weather front should be well south and east of the area, sunday looking like the best day out of the weekend but stormy tomorrow. for the evening scattered storms. some strong. a very light wind. then tomorrow morning, possible showers again. i think those are going to be down to the south around charlottesville and around fredericksburg continued mild between 60 and 67 degrees early tomorrow morning. any of those games i think for tomorrow morning should be just fine as long as they're before the noon hour. then it's 80 to 85 degrees tomorrow. your wind out of the southwest. plenty sticky. once we cool down we should stay in the 60s here for the second half of the weekend going into the early part of next week. again, a 50% chance for showers and even a few thunderstorms

welcome back to news 4 at 4:00. >> here's what's making news at 4:30. police say a homeless man killed a church secretary and critically injured a copastor at a church in ellicott city, maryland. officers say 56-year-old douglas franklin jones opened fire at st. peter's episcopal church yesterday before killing himself in the woods. police tell us he used the church food bank but became angry. a wealthy donor felt like she was being used when she was asked to donate millions of additional dollars to john edwards according to the donor's friend. interior designer brian huffman who testified today at edwards' campaign finance corruption trial. prosecutors believe edwards illegally used some of that

donated money to hide his extra marital affair. >> the april jobs report shows unemployment dropping slightly to 8.1% last month but analysts say that's because many job seekers simply stop looking for work. stocks finished the week in negative territory after a report that the government slowed hiring last month. at the closing bell the dow was down 168 points. the nasdaq and s&p posted their biggest weekly drops of the year. the nasdaq fell 68 points. the s&p was down 22. >> whether it's fully loaded nachos, burritos with lots of cheese, many of us plan to indulge in our favorite mexican food as we celebrate. we're already hungry. >> stop. you're making me hungry. >> it's cinco de mayo, folks, tomorrow. >> but the meal doesn't have to be calorie packed or unhealthy. as erica edwards reports when it is done right authentic mexican cuisine is quite healthy. >> reporter: there is something about cinco de mayo that

inspires many americans to smother everything in sight with cheese and consume multiple margaritas. but that may lead to stomach revolt with the side of regret. chefs say we've americanized classic mexican food and made it unhealthy in the process. >> we've dressed it up, put cheese on it, we fry things, and the original version has lost some of its luster. >> reporter: registered dietician roberta andings said the original version is plant based, tons of tomatoes, onions, black beans, and of course corn. which leads to my personal vice, the corn chip. she says typical restaurant chips are fried and about 25 calories apiece. >> do the math. you have 10 and that is equivalent to a sandwich and you haven't even had your meal yet. >> reporter: the chefs at pioppo's tacos antequilla restaurant in north carolina recently lightened up their mexican fare. >> we have a new lettuce wrap taco and also on whole wheat.

his car and then drive for 12 hours or for a 10-year-old boy to eat dog given to him by his step father. >> colbert was on the "today" show promoting his new children's book. all righty. group of thieves who broke into a jewelry store got a lot less than they bargained for. security cameras were rolling on monday when the men busted into the store in michigan. it took them less than three minutes to smash the display cases, grab the jewelry, and get away. but it turns out they made off with jewelry. >> fortunately for us, a lot of the rings that they did get were cubic zirconia and silver so they're sample rings. we do a lot of samples. so, fortunately, they're pretty well worthless. >> joke's on them. the store owner says it is common practice for stores to display fake pieces. they keep the rail deal in a safe. if the thieves had picked up the real jewelry, the heist would

why is there a limit on how much gas you can buy at the pump with your credit card? how long do open condiments like ketchup last in the 'fridge? are henna tatoos safe? let's ask liz. >> nice to see you. >> first question from marty in herndon, virginia. marty wants to know why there is a limit on how much gas you can buy when you use your credit card at the pump. >> i was glad he asked this question. we contacted chevron, visa, and the national association of convenience and fuel retailing for this answer. all say when a credit card is swiped at the pump an automated system contacts your credit card bank to authorize the transaction. chevron says that then an amount of money is placed on hold for the transaction and that amount is determined by your credit card company. and the amount can vary. for example visa says that if you want to use a visa card at the pump the amount placed on hold ranges from $79 to $150.

so gas stations will limit the transacti transactions at the pump to this amount because they can only be paid back up to that amount placed on hold. that means at $4 a gallon some folks might have a problem filling up their tank if it holds more than 19 gallons of fuel. and the national association of convenience and fuel retailing says this is done to prevent fraudulent charges. to avoid the limit simply go inside and patient the attendant directly. i think this has always been the case but because we haven't been at $4 a gallon we haven't noticed there was a limit. who pumped $150 of gas before? >> right. and you can go inside. >> and they can check your signature. that's right. >> all right. next question from mike in arlington, virginia. mike wants to know how long you can keep ketchup and other condiments in the 'fridge. >> not years, mike. the usda gave us this answer. it says that open ketchup and cocktail sauce, chili sauce, will last up to six months in the 'fridge. mustard 12 months. that is a year.

see clearing by saturday late and that means that we'll be able to this, our super moon at 11:35. the moon starts to rise at 7:55, so as it heads up on the horizon there and gets higher and higher in the sky any time from about 7:55 to 11:35 it'll start looking bigger and bigger. 30% brighter and 14% bigger than normal when it's full. but it will make the closest pass in the orbit to us at 221,8 221,802 away. close by now are a few showers and storms. we're watching this little area around bellevue headed toward corbin in the next couple minutes. travis mills heavy rain. then another little pocket in prince william county. that one is going to be passing right over i-95 in the next couple minutes. so pockets of heavy rain, some lightening for tonight. tomorrow morning. most areas should be dry. any showers and storms will be down to the south but we'll start out in the 60s. we'll see high temperatures tomorrow in the mid 70s across

she is signing books tonight at 7:00 at the barnes & noble in downtown bethesda. in case you haven't heard "50 shades" is the graphic romance novel that has become a worldwide sensation since its release earlier this year. it's about a young woman's submissive sexual relationship with a wealthy and domineering businessman. fans usually turn out in droves for her book signings. tonight will probably be no different. college dorm rooms don't usually boast the most impressive accommodations. >> but this is a whole different ball game, folks. one student at uc-berkeley has come up with something that looks like it's from ferris buehler's day off. check it out. engineering student derrick lowe created brad. it stands for berkeley ridiculously automated dorm. he programmed an elaborate light setup with a disco ball, strobes, and lasers all with voice-activated controls hooked up to his lap top.

a nevada woman is speaking out about her real life nightmare. four years ago melissa oxley woke up to find her husband ben murdered in bed next to her, a crime committed while their young daughter slept in the bedroom beside them. as keith morrison reports, oxley quickly became the focus of the police investigation. >> reporter: it was to say the least an unusual wedding. three people in this one. when melissa married father of one ben oxley. >> alissa will you promise to
