good morning. welcome to "news4 midday." i'm barbara harrison. it is monday, may 7, 2012. we begin with breaking news from the d.c. courthouse. we are told a jury reached a verdict in the south capitol street murders. it has not been announced yet. five men are on trial for the shooting that killed five people. nine others were hurt. the attacks happened in march of 2010. prosecutors say the rampage initially started over a fake diamond bracelet had a was stolen. more than 100 witnesses testified during the trial. and lawyers presented more than

1,000 pieces of evidence. jurors have been deliberating since april 19. again the verdict is in. but it has not been announced. we will bring it to you as soon as we learn it. a 10-year-old girl is recovering from morning after getting grazed bay bullet. it happened at the intersection of new york avenue and fenwick street in northeast d.c. she was driven to -- or by the police to the police station on 42nd street. tracee wilkins has details for us now. >> reporter: d.c. police have providedome updates in this investigation. first of all, they say that the 10-year-old victim was actually grazed by the bullet during the shooting and not shot. she's expected to make a full recovery. meantime, police are still trying to figure out exactly what led to the shooting in the first place. just after 3:30 this morning, d.c. police say that an adult woman pulled up to the sixth district police station and carrying a 10-year-old girl who had been injured in some sort of a drive-by shooting.

she drove her pickup truck nearly three miles from the scene of the actual shooting. d.c. police say that the shooting started here at new york avenue and fenwick. now according to the adult woman who was in the pickup truck another vehicle pulled up next to her truck. this was a white vehicle. we don't know if it was a truck or car. she told police there were three women and one man inside of that vehicle. and that that's where the shots came from. striking her truck. she then drove across town to the 6th district police station. why the woman drove to the 6th district police station at 42nd and benning road will be part of the investigation. since the 5th district police station was closer. also howard university hospital is just down the road. we counted at least two bullet holes on the side of the truck. it also had a flat tire. a d.c. police say they believe that the adult female who was driving the pickup truck and the 10-year-old victim may be related because they both have the same last name. they are not saying exactly how

they are related. the investigation is continuing. in northeast, i'm tracee wilkins, news4. happening today, a member of british royalty is headed across the pond. prince harry will be here in d.c. for a special honor. news4's megan mcgrath has more now from the ritz-carlton downtown. >> reporter: it is a cause that's near to his heart. since serving in afghanistan in 2007, prince harry has been actively involved in charities that help wounded soldiers. tonight he's being honored for his work and will receive the atlantic council's award for distinguished humanitarian leadership. >> needs attention and who better to give it to him, high profile. >> i think it is wonderful. i think he's done great things and i remember diana well. i think that he's doing a wonderful job. >> reporter: but first, prince harry will meet with wounded soldiers at a reception at that time british am a ambassador's residence this afternoon. he will visit with service men

and women from the uk who just participated in the paraolympics sporting event warrior games in colorado. then it is off to the ritz-carlton to receive his award. women who work in the area say that it is exciting, prospect of seeing the dashing young prince. >> i would love to meet him. yeah. young, handsome devil like that, you bet. i would love to meet him. the fact he is here for such a cause is wonderful. >> i would love to bump into the prince. yes, i would. i love him. that's great. i didn't know he was going to be this close. we may have to work late tonight. >> well, he will be here soon. turning to the weather and gray skies we have out there this morning, storm 4 meteorologist tom kierein joins us with the first forecast. it is going to be nice and sunny the for the prince today? >> i don't think so. he will feel right at home. it is more like a london sky. >> that's true. >> than washington. we have the low clouds that are with us and as you saw there in that live picture, they are hanging low over the metro area. over the last six hours, you

look here at the view from space, you can see there are breaks in the clouds, parts of calvert county, sun there and sun on the eastern shore. also some sun breaking out just to our south and southwest. little bit of sun trying to break out in southern montgomery county, loudoun, prince william, stafford, spotsylvania. over the district now, we have quite a bit of cloudiness and it is going to stay mostly cloudy throughout much of the region as we get into the afternoon. temperatures right now under those clouds, 64 now at reagan national. low and mid 60s suburbs and rural areas across virginia and maryland. although they had a lot more sun out in west virginia, mountains. look at petersburg, 77 there. cumberland, 68. nice and sunny in western maryland. under the low clouds, we are going to hold steady in the 60s to just into the low 70s by late they are afternoon. and we will have a south-southeasterly wind at around 5 to 10 miles an hour. we will look at our seasonable pattern here for the rest of the week. that will be coming up, 7-day outlook in a few minutes.

>> 14 people, including 12 kids, have been taken to the hospital after a school bus collided with a van in prince george's county. it happened around 8:15 this morning on indian head high way and ft. washington. this is a picture of the van. there it is. shortly after the accident. we are looking at the bus and the van there. the driver is hospitalized, in critical condition, we understand. 12 students and the bus driver were taken to the hospital with only minor injuries. this accident closed indian head highway for two hours today. we will check in with danella sealock now to see how things are moving there now. >> right now the accident has been moved to the right shoulder lane. travel lanes are open as you head northbound on indian head highway. i can tell thaw it is a slow trip. right around ft. washington road, that's where the delays start and they continue as you make your way past palmer road. other things to look out for in our area, traveling 66, road work taking away your left lane. this is 66 at gallows. travel pete not bad. driving at 59 miles per hour.

i'm back with a look at the 14th street bridge. we still see road work here. for now back over to you. >> great. we will see new a few minutes. this morning, prince george's county police are still looking for a hit-and-run driver that killed a man. 28-year-old samuel diaz was crossing university boulevard on saturday night when he was hit. police say the driver of a silver suv didn't stop after hitting diaz in front of adelphi plaza. pedestrians say there are not a lot of cross walks around the area. police started a street smart campaign to warn and ticket reckless drivers and jaywalkers. d.c. police are searching for the person who shot a woman in northeast washington. the shooting happened along fitch place just before 10:00 last night. we are told a woman was shot in the stomach. she was taken to the hospital in kritcle condition. so par no arrests have been made in this case. new from overnight, an early and unexpected wakeup call for residents of one prince george's

county apartment. a car plow flood the building on good luck road near kenilworth avenue just before 4:00 this morning. police say the driver lost control of the car and jumped the curb and drove right into the building. no one was hurt, though. police are not saying whether the driver will face charges. residents of the southeast washington apartment also got an early wakeup. a fire tore through the building on 53rd street near east capitol street. one person had to be treat order the scene for injuries. fire fighters are still pigging out what caused the fire. 11:08. coming up, new evidence a rockville man kidnapped by al qaeda last summer is still live. we will hear from the woman from the center of the secret service sex scandal. she is talking for the first time on u.s. television. world markets react badly to the results of elections in europe. we are going to show you. will u.s. markets follow? also, stay with us for the announcement of a verdict in the south capitol street mass shooting case. five people were killed in the shooting in d.c.

pakistan. nbc news cannot confirm when and where this video was made. in the video weinstein pleads with president obama to agree to al qaeda's demands. he claims he will be killed otherwise. al qaeda said without it release weinstein if the u.s. stopped air strikes in afghanistan, pakistan, somalia and yemen. it also wants al qaeda and taliban us is pegs around the world preede. weinstein works for je austin associates with advises pakistani businesses and government organizations. legal experts say a trial against five men accused in the september 11 attacks could droog for years. the defendants, including khalid sheikh mohammed, the self-proclaimed mastermind of the september 11 attacks. the group disrupted saturday's hearing. they knelt in prayer, ignored the judge, and wouldn't listen to arabic translations and instructions. at one point the defendants asked that all their charges be

economic policies. hmo and favo-- hollande renew a approach. hammered stock markets today. the main exchange in athens is down a massive 8%. key indexes are the stock market in paris and frankfurt and they also dropped by more than 1%. asian stocks plummeted to three-month low. stocks here in the u.s. are also opening the dawe lower. we are going to get the latest from cnbc later in our newscast. race for the white house will really heat up this week. the white house says it had start running ads extensively this week. touting the president's accomplishments during his first term. this comes as a couple of days after he officially launched his re-election campaign with ral niece richmond and ohio. his likely opponent in november, mitt romney will hold a town hall meeting today in the cleveland area.

today on capitol hill, student loans are a priority as congress heads back in session. a democratic plan in the senate would keep interest rates on subsidized loans from doubling july 1. $6 billion needed to do that would come from social security and medicare you payroll taxes from high earnings owners. republicans have their own bill. it would freeze interest rates for a year but money would come from eliminating preventative health program instead. let's talk about the weather. on the chilly side. overcast. not so bad out there today. >> it is good for outdoor exercise. and recreation. some low clouds are coming over the region right now. and it is refreshing. we have a southeasterly flow and you can see those clouds at the low levels. cruising over washington now. lowest clouds are up there at about 1,200 to 1,500 feet. above that, we have quite a bit of cloudiness. there are a few breaks in the clouds south and east of washington. on the right is reagan national airport where the temperature now sunday the clouds is at 64.

humidity up there a little bit. winds are out of the south there off of the potomac at 5 to 10 miles an hour. now as we take a look at one of our viewer photos, this was sent in by jim messinger. peonies in his yard are popping out. if you have an interesting weather or nature photo send it to weather@nbcwashington.com. there is a lot of sun out in the mountains. all the area in yell so well into the 70s here. across kentucky, west virginia, southern ohio, western pennsylvania. closer to washington, though, under the clouds, all thesers in a green. it is in the 60s throughout most of virginia and eastern shore was in the 40s this morning. under a clear sky there. few clouds developed there and with that wind coming off of the atlantic, it is a cool flow for them. aloft the upper level flow is come out of the norths and west. there are a few showers up here in pennsylvania. we had a few sprintlecles passing north of washington this morning. latest satellite image is showing nice breaks in the clouds.

here is a closer view of that. some sunshine now in the northern neck of virginia. and calvert county, parts of the eastern shore. there is the cloud cover over northern virginia, district, few thin spots out here in loudoun county. and right along the blue ridge, they have sunshine breaking out but levels below 3,000 feet are pretty much socked in with clouds right now. fredericksburg has sunshine. as we go forward, over the next 48 hours. that leaves clouds in and out and a few peeks of sun off and on into the afternoon. overall quite cloudy pattern. into tonight, remaining cloudy. then during the day tuesday, here comes showers in the area and breen and yellow. these are zones of potential showers moving in. maybe thunder and lightning and later in the afternoon, might get some strong storms. that would be late tomorrow afternoon and into early tomorrow evening. potential for severe weather. for the rest of the afternoon expect mostly cloudy sky. temperatures only peaking in the low 70s around. of the region. warmer out west where they had a lot of sun this morning. southeasterly flow will keep it

cool and comfortable. overnight tonight, too, lot of clouds around. rather cool. down to the low 60s by midnight. and then by dawn tomorrow, 50s much of the region and clouds around tuesday. temperatures reaching the low to mid 70s during the afternoon. pretty good chance of late afternoon and evening showers and thunderstorms. earlier in the day, though, mountains, again, isolated storms tomorrow might produce damaging winds and hail. as we get into wednesday, maybe some more showers and thunder. that may linger into thursday morning. and then we ought to dry out thursday afternoon and sun coming back and looks like a beautiful day friday. although chilly start and in the 40s friday morning. friday afternoon, 60s to just near 70. over the weekend, heading to the mid 70suring the afternoon, saturday and sunday. and some sunshine. looks like a nice weekend coming up. >> great. that would be nice. thanks, tom. out to the roads we go. danella you said there are problems on the 14th street

bridge. >> definitely. first i-want to show you delays on the metro. if you are traveling on the orange or blue line metro has scheduled track work. you are seeing delays on both lines in both directions. over to 395. this is where the road work is blocking right lane here but luckily your volume is very light on 395 as you make your way northbound across the 14th street bridge. but if this is yostick to the lt and you will be okay. travel need, 4 miles per hour. you are under speed now. looking at 15 minutes to get from the beltway to the 14th street bridge. >> thank you, danella. breaking news from the d.c. courthouse. a jury reached a verdict in the south capitol street murders. this decision comes after more than three weeks of deliberations. let's check in now with megan mcgrath. live at that time courthouse with more. >> reporter: we are still waiting for that verdict to come down here. we received word that the jury has made a decision. we are all in place here at the courthouse. waiting for that verdict to be announced in the courtroom. judge t judge denied a request

for a mistrial earlier in these deliberations. after a juror said she felt pressured to change her views. the judge told the jury to go back and resume deliberations and now it looks like we do indeed have a verdict in this case. this is one of the deadliest shootings in the city as history. five men, orlando carter, carter, jeffrey best, robert bost, lamar williams, are on trial, were on trial for multiple counts of first-degree murder, conspiracy, and gun charges. now, this all began in march of 2010. five people died in three separate shootings on multiple days. violence sparked over a missing piece of cheap costume jewelry. now the trial began eight weeks ago. we had three weeks of deliberations. certainly a long and complicated trial. one that's being followed very closely. given just the severity of this crime and how many people died. again, we are learning that a verdict has been handed down. we are here at the courthouse.

entitled to the same exact rights. >> president obama does not publicly support gay marriage but says that his position is evolving. the white house says the vice president joe biden's comments on "meet the press" were not an endorsement for same-sex marriage. the vice president commented on the sentiment americans are increasingly showing support for gay marriage. a first today. reagan national. boeing's new 787 dream liner is in washington for the first time. the new state of the art plane landed earlier in morning at dulles before heading to reagan. transportation secretary ray lahood is at the airport important the big event. boeing calls the dream liner the future of air travel. it has several amenities for passengers, including bigger windows and it is more fuel efficient, too. a preservation group says secretary's birth place is among the most endangered historic sites in virginia.

the racehorse was born at meadow farm. the farm is one of 11 properties that made preservation virginia's annual list of endangered sites. meadow farm is the former home of the state fair. it is up for auction this month. among the other entries, historic overlook over the james river in richmond, train depot in franklin county, and the rural landscape of pennsylvania county, virginia. we are going to check in with tom kierein now to find out about our weather forecast and when we may see some sun. >> it has been a cloudy and cool morning throughout most of the region. we had a little sunshine breaking out. temperatures around the reege region are in the 60s. montgomery i will have arnlgsvi prince william county. and as we look at other temperatures, reagan national is at 64. eastern shore is -- what a warmup. they warmed up 20-something degrees since this morning's 40s. now it is into the 60s.

quite a bit sunshine. sun in northern maryland 37 fredericksburg up to 68. petersburg in west virginia, a lot of sun there. southwesterly wind. and it is already near 80 degrees there now. locally, though, under the cloud covers the still generally into the 60s. but where you see darker areas, that's where we got the sun. there's sun now in southern maryland, northern neck. fredericksburg, prince william county. few thin spots in loudoun county and in the highlands of west virginia. lot of sun there. around the metro area are reaching the low 70s this afternoon. mostly cloudy and then showers and thundershowers tomorrow. during the late afternoon and evening hours, the timing on that now, there is a possibility of an isolated severe storm tomorrow. then on wednesday, some showers and thunder coming through. lingering showers thursday morning. drying out after that as we get into the weekend. looks like a nice pattern for the weekend plans. saturday and sunday may make it into the mid 70s. >> okay. thank you, tom. look again at the traffic. we had earlier problems.

how is it looking now? >> road work 395 crossing 14th street bridge and i-66 eastbound as you make your way to the beltway. over to the beltway, crossing the american legion bridge, no i shall news this area. outer loop and inner loop clear. looping around into virginia, there you are going to see some road work. just past braddock, blocking the right lane here. excuse me, left lane. stick to the right. you will be fine. traveling on the outer loop. inner loop, you are clear as well. >> thank you. today in montgomery county the legal process is beginning in two different murder cases. gaithersburg man accused of killing his son will make his first appearance in court. police say 55-year-old wayne price got in a heated argument with his 23-year-old son, matthew price. it happened in the apartment on spiceberry circle saturday nature. police say that the father tried to walk away but the fight continued. he pulled out a gun and shot his son. the detectives say wayne price

told a security guard in the area what happened. he's charged with first-degree murder. silver spring man accused of stabbing his wife to death will be in court this afternoon. witnesses told news4 hector gonardos started an argument with anna in a parking lot on garland avenue. then stabbed her. she was sitting in the passenger seat of another man's car about to go grocery shopping. neighbors say he was jealous of the friendship between his wife and the other man. this evening d.c. leaders will address a nightclub's impact on its surrounding community. the district temporarily pulled the liquor license for mood lounge after a double stabbing outside the club in january. ward 2 council member evans said neighbors complained about violence, noise and trash near the club in northwest d.c. today leaders from several district offices, including the police, will address those concerns. and that meeting is at 6:30 tonight and kennedy rec center on 7th street.

today an autopsy will be performed on a man found dead at church him downs. just hours after the kentucky derby. police say the victim, 48-year-old anaun perez, worked at the racetrack. a security guard found his body in a barn. police say the death is being investigated as a homicide. so far no arrests have been made. the family of linebacker junior seau is reconsidering their decision to donate his brain to science. seau's family is consulting with a group of elders before making that decision. seau committed suicide last week in his california home at the age of 43. yesterday hundreds took part in a paddle-out to honor the longtime nfl star. fans swam out on surfboards, boats and kayaks to show support for the family. will will be a public memorial service this friday at qualcomm stadium in san diego. imagine getting ready to take your dog for a walk,

right. we received word the verdict has been handed down and we are expecting the verdict to be read any time now inside of the courtroom. now this is a lengthy process that's actually taking a little bit longer than we were expecting. jury forms are very long and they are very complicated. this could take time. we got word about 10:30 that the jury was in. everyone is assembled here at the court house and waiting for that verdict to be read inside of the courtroom. this is one of the deadliest shootings in d.c.'s history. five people were killed in three shootings over the series of several days. this all began with a deadly shooting over a missing piece of costume jewelry. a cheap bracelet. and then ended in mass shooting on south capitol street after gunmen opened fire on a group of people who had gathered following the funeral of that original murder victim. again, one of the worst shootings in the history of the district of columbia. five men on trial for this crime will learn their fate soon. we will continue to follow this and bring thank you latest when it happens. reporting live from the d.c.
