it will be a quick but memorable trip for the folks who will get a chance to meet royalty. good afternoon. i'm pat lawson muse. >> i'm jim handly. it is our top story. he is here, folks. prince harry is in town right now meeting with injured service members. participating in the warrior games. the prince is at a reception at the british embassy's residence. he will attend a dinner at the ritz-carlton tonight. he will be receiving the atlantic council's 2012 award for distinguished humanitarian leadership. news4's megan something grath reports on the talk of the town. a chance to see a prince. >> reporter: it is a cause near to his heart. since serving in afghanistan in 2007, prince harry has been actively involved in charities that help wounded soldiers. tonight he's being honored for his work and will receive the atlantic council's award for distinguished humanitarian leadership. >> i think it is wonderful.

i think he has done great things and i rememberian well. i think that -- i remember diana well. he did doing a wonderful job. >> reporter: he will visit with servicemen and women from the uk who participated in the paraolympics event warrior games in colorado. then off to the ritz-carlton to receive his award. women that work in the area say it is exciting the prospect of seeing the dashing young prince. >> i would love to meet him. yeah. young, handsome devil like that, you bet. i would love to meet him. the fact he's here for a good cause is wonderful. >> i would love to bum inner loop the prince. yes, i would. i love him. that's great. i didn't know he was going to be this close. we may have to work late tonight. >> reporter: megan mcgrath, news4. >> another member of the obama administration has spoken out in support of gay marriage. during an interview, education secretary arne duncan said same-sex couples should be able to legally marry.

it was his first public about the issue. yesterday vice president joe biden said he's comfortable with same-sex marriage. both biden's and duncan's comments may put them at odds with president obama who has said his position on gay marriage is evolving. now to the race for the white house. president obama's team launched into its first week of the official re-election campaign with a major ad. the economy is the main focus. steve handelsman has the latest. >> reporter: in the battleground state of ohio, mitt romney today accused the president of steering the u.s. to the left. actually to the east across the land. he is taking america on a path towards europe. it is not going to work here. europe is in real trouble. >> reporter: two days after president obama kicked off his re-election campaign. >> four more years! >> reporter: new national polls show the race virtually tied. romney up by 1% in a survey of

swing state voters by politico. obama ahead by 2% in a similar poll by "usa today" and gallup. the president is making his case for re-election in a rare all-positive tv ad. to run in nine swing state battle grounds. >> today our auto industry is backfiring on all cylinders. our greatest enemy brought to justice by our greatest heroes. instead of losing jobs, we are creating them. >> reporter: mitt romney's campaign put up a video slamming the obama record. back to your open. socialist francois hollande was elected. >> anything that slows down the global recovery is bad news for the president and could affect the re-election. >> reporter: especially in a race that's so close now in the

polls. a race that seems sure to be a referendum on recovery. i'm steve handelsman, news4. dozens of guilty verdicts handed down today in one of the deadliest shootings in recent history here in washington. five men are convicted in connection with the south capitol street massacre of 2010. they are accused of killing five people and wounding several others over the course of two days. all apparently over a missing piece of costume jewelry. san kwan kartd carter, orlando carter, robert boast, lamar williams are all convicted of murder and dozens of other felony counts. pat collins will have more from the survivors of these crimes coming up tonight at 5:00. john edwards' core ums trial is in its third week. prosecutors are trying to show that edwards knowingly and illegally used campaign donations to hide his pregnant mistress. edwards and his daughter cate arrived at the courthouse this morning. today alex forger was back on

the witness stand. he is the lawyer for virginia heiress rachel bunny melon. memorandum only gave thousands of dollars to edwards when he ran for president and that the money was for a personal need of edwards. prosecutors contend that some of that money was used in the coverup. edwards denies breaking any law. new numbers out today say nearly half of american adults are projected to be obese by the we are 2030 unless the country makes significant changes. the growing problem has prompted many experts to look at ways of preventing obesity long before adulthood focusing even on toddlers. erica edwards has our story. >> reporter: america's scales continue to tip in the wrong direction. the prevalence of obesity is now predicted to reach 42% of adults by the year 2030. slightly lower than earlier projections, but still expected to add billions of dollars to health care costs. >> probably the best treatment

is prevention. >> reporter: obesity experts say the best time for prevention is childhood. >> for many parents, a chubby baby or chubby toddler in their mind is a sign they are doing something well. >> reporter: new research found many mothers of overweight toddlers misjudge their child's body size assuming the kids are at healthy weight. 20% of mothers of healthy, average sized children wanted their kids to pout a few more pounds. this is a good time for pete yeahtritions to step in with a growth chart and ensure they are on the right track. >> pediatricians don't provide the reassurance, they may be trying to fatten their children up. >> reporter: overweight children are likely to be overweight teens and then overweight adults. >> it makes sense to focus on children to prevent obesity in the first place. but we also need to reach out to adults. >> reporter: health and human services secretary sebelius

spoke at a conference monday. she and others agree that the nation can't afford to expand the waistline any longer. erica edwards, nbc news. other new obesity related research focus owes teenagers and their television viewing habits. those who watch the most tv, a fewer fruit -- ate fewer fruits and vegetables each day and consumed more candy and more sodas. cameras captured the moment a tornado tore through a city northeast of tokyo on sunday. the twister touched down 40 mules outside of japan's capital city. a 14-year-old boy died and dozens of others were injured. the tornado tore roofs off houses and snapped tree limbs. about 24,000 homes lost electricity. forecasters say that it was an f-2 tornado with winds as high as 157 miles per hour. tornadoes are rare in the tokyo area. cloudy skies in our area and get ready, folks. rain could be en route for the rest of the week.

>> storm 4 meteorologist veronica johnson has the first look at weather. >> hey there, guys. this is the way we are starting off our week. with clouds, right? across the area. and we are waiting on the showers. seems like, you know, we have been overcast much of the day today. take a look. complete canopy of cloud cover throughout the area with our temperatures throughout holding. holding in the 60s, low 70s around the area. radar right now, storm 4 radar, you can see where the showers are. off to the west, south of frostburg. around areas of mineral, around hampshire and harty county in west virginia. there is a little storm there that is building. that will be making its way eastward. moving slowly at about the 10 to 15 miles per hour. so any storms well off to the west. we could see an isolated shower trying to sneak into our area here for the evening hours. that really is it. again, upper 60s, low 70s throughout the area. 70 degrees now in cleveland park.

after winning 16 olympic medals, swimmer michael phelps says he is looking to retire in a televised interview yesterday phelps said the london games will be his last olympic games. the 26 year old baltimore native broke a record in beijing back in 2008 earning eight gold

south wind at 16 miles per hour. dew point temperature not bad. it doesn't feel that sticky or humid as it did at the end of last week. we are going to keep quite a bit of cloud cover around for not only the overnight period but also tomorrow morning. notice the temperatures, though, not too bad, 62 at 11:00. 7:00 a.m. tomorrow morning. just a little cool. watching one great big weather system affect the east coast. we have thunderstorms from texas all the way up to the northeast. look at areas accept round mississippi, louisiana. powerful storms there. more scattered storms, western pennsylvania, western maryland and right through west virginia and ohio. better chance of storms for us tomorrow. and as we watch this cold front that is in areas of ohio make its way eastward for tomorrow morning. we are dry but any time after about 1:00, 2:00, we will start to see showers and then thunderstorms in the potential for moderate to heavy rain comes our way tomorrow. maybe even high winds. big potential west for tomorrow

juliett simms, chris mann. sadly we won't be seeing erin willett, the young lady from gaithersburg who we have been rooting for. she was eliminated last week. we had the opportunity to catch up with her earlier. despite the loss, she's more motivated than ever. it has been six weeks since gaithersburg's hometown girl erin willett won over the world with those red lips and that hair. in one night she went from singing in brooklyn bars to bringing down the house in front of millions. >> it definitely gave me the confidence to dream bigger than i thought i could. >> reporter: the show has been her family, home away from home during a very trying time. early in the competition, her number one fan, her father chuck, passed away from cancer. she has grown incredibly close to her coach who also lost his dad around the same time. definitely more than a coach.

phenomenon is uncommon but not unheard of. given florida's sandy top soil and network of underground rivers certainly came as a hock to the family. the hole took down four 30-foot tall oak trees. >> she woke me up up and said there is a hole in the backyard. i said it is probably a warthog. >> no, a hole. >> we ran downstairs. it was collapsing into itself. >> the family immediately evacuated but also moved all of their stuff outside for fear that the sinkhole will swallow their entire house. authorities say that nearby homes may also be at risk. in 1981 in nearby winter park, florida, a sinkhole swallowed a car dealership, public swimming pool and a portion of a roadway in a single day.

we have had a lot of clouds today. what do you see on the radar? >> not much in the way of showers. one or would neighborhoods well towards north and west may get brief shower coming through. other than that you will be dry here for the evening for the overnight and even dry for tomorrow morning. notice for the showers are now. north of winchester, virginia. have you thunderstorms around elkins, west virginia. and just west of petersburg, west virginia. those storms slowly moving to the east and northeast. yes, some of them are bringing with them a bit of lightning. again, for our immediate area, right now, we are dry. as far as the forecast goes, watch your future weather here. this is where the weather computer models think the clouds

or rain may be. we are dry overnight. early tomorrow morning, mostly cloudy to partly sunny through the area. any time after about 1:00 or 2:00 p.m. tomorrow, i think we will start to see showers around the area and as it gets later and later with that cold front getting closer, possibility of thunderstorms that will carry right through tuesday night and into wednesday morning. so wednesday morning, in fact, looking like we could have cloudy conditions with thunderstorms around the area. highs tomorrow into the upper 07s. one of the warmest days out of the workweek with 50% chance of showers and thunderstorms. the humidity will be back on wednesday. 70% chance of showers and storms. 70 degrees for thursday. again, if you are looking towards the weekend right now, 72 for friday and back into the mid and upper 70s for this weekend with sunshine right now on tap. >> all right. looking good. thanks, veronica. >> facebook execs hit the road trying on convince investors why they should buy stock.

service rep important wells fargo home mortgage for five years. she was fired last week. not because of poor performance. but because of something she did 40 years ago. seems the background check revealed she was convicted of shoplifting back in 1972. the company says that federal law prohibits it from hiring or continuing to employ anyone with a criminal record involving dishonesty. she says she is a good worker and should not have lost her job because of something that happened so long ago. picking the perfect prom dress can prove to be tough. but one michigan high schooler made a pretty sweet choice. diane mcneese created this, a dress using starburst candy wrappers. the project took her five months. she used 18,000 wrappers for the bodice. and matching hairband and purse. she said she didn't eat all of that candy. she says she simply asked important donated starburst wrappers throughout the year.

trash and claimed the prize. but now a judge says the money isn't hers even though she spent about 20% of it. jan . >> reporter: as sharon jones sees it it is a case of finder's keepers. for more an year she has been a finder. collecting discarded lottery tickets and entering the numbers on a website for a chance at secondary prizes like magazine subscriptions. she says she always gets the tickets from the store's trash. >> any story have ever went into, they said nothing because they were in crash can. other people got them out of the crash can. >> reporter: when one of the tickets wouldn't enter last summer sharon called her husband to help figure out why. >> he told me, he said i think this is a million dollar ticket. i said there's no way. no way. i did not believe it at all. >> reporter: a million dollars was theirs. sharon and william laid off has from his construction job, it felt like a miracle.

$680,000 after taxes. the couple paid off credit cards and gave money to their children and for themselves they bought a new truck. >> i mean, you know, i was overwhelmed. good fortune and had -- finally came my way. >> reporter: their joy was short-lived. a clerk at the convenience store where sharon got the ticket sued for the money saying the trash belonged to her. then another woman joined that suit claiming she was the buyer and throughoew out the $20 tick only after the scanning machine told her it was not a winner. the arkansas lottery commission says the scanner worked properly. >> i'm sure they wanted to make clear that the scanner -- ticket checker scanner did not break. it has never malfunctioned in this case and testimony was clear that it did not break. >> reporter: whose monday i have it? a judge ruled last week in favor of the woman who threw the ticket in the trash saying she is entitled to the winnings. sharon jones is devastated.
