superior court. pat collins, news4. a 9-year-old girl is recovering after being grazed by a bullet during a drive-by shooting in northeast. it happened about 3:45 this morning off new york avenue in fenwick street. the girl was sitting in a pickup truck when another vehicle pulled up and opened fire. at least two shots hit the truck. the girl was hit in the leg. she is expected to be okay. d.c. police are looking for the shooter. there is no word yet on a possible motive. prince george's county where 14 people including 12 children were taken to the hospital after a school bus collided with a van and happened this morning on indian head highway in ft. washington. this is a picture of the van shortly after the accident. the driver is in critical condition. 12 students and the bus driver wrestling all taken to the hospital with minor injuries. president obama's re-election team is starting the week with an advertising blitz. he kicked off his campaign overing the weekend with rallies

and in two key swing states. virginia and ohio. the new ad unveiled today runs in both of those places as well as seven other battleground states. it is a positive ad and highlights the rebound of the auto industry. the killing of osama bin laden and end of the war in iraq. it does not mention republican mitt romney at all. romney mentioned the president today at a town hall in ohio. he accused the president of steering the u.s. to the left. >> taking america on a path towards europe. europe is not working there. it is not going to work here. europe is in real trouble. >> reporter: at least two new national polls sgt the race is virtually tied at this point. meanwhile a new poll suggests virginia governor mcdonnell has lost some public support in the commonwealth p his approval rating dropped six points over the past year from 62 down to 56%. 35% of the people polled say they disapprove of the job he is doing. that's a nine-point increase compared to a year ago. the governor lost support among

dependents and women over an uproar over a bill requiring women to undergo an ultrasound test before having an abortion. the escort at the center of the secret service scandal says her life has been turned upside down since the story broke. dania suarez gave nbc news an exclusive interview in madrid, spain. she claims three men approached her and her friends at bar and propositioned them for sex. she said it was obvious they had done this before because they were not shy about it. she also called the men dumb and said she doesn't know how president obama had them in his security detail. the investigation began after suarez complained to police she wasn't paid for her services. several agents lost their jobs because of the scandal. new developments tonight surrounding a rockville man who is being held tonight hostage in pakistan. his name is warren weinstein.

today we are hearing from him for the first time since he was kidnapped almost a year ago. julie carey is here now with more on his story. >> it is first time 70-year-old warren weinstein had been seen since he was abducted by eight armed gunmen from his residence in pakistan last august. he is seated in front of a platter of food and in the video he makes an appeal directly to president obama. a yellow ribbon gidistinguishes the home. the family refused comment that shows their loved one apparently well. >> my name is warren weinstein. >> reporter: a former peace corps worker and employed in the u.s. aide worker when he was abducted. when hifs first kidnapped in august, weinstein's employer reported he was in poor health and needed medication for heart problems. then in december, an al qaeda leader appeared in a video with list of demands in exchange for weinstein's release and included the release of awful al qaeda and taliban suspects around the

world. while no demands are specified in weinstein's videotaped plea he directly asked president obama to arrange for his release. today white house spokesman carney says while there is great concern for weinstein's well-being and safety the u.s. government will not negotiate with terrorists. >> we condemn the kidnapping in the strongest terms and call for his immediate release. the u.s. government will continue making every effort to see mr. weinstein released safely to his family but we cannot and will not meg officiate with al qaeda. >> reporter: weinstein's family had no comment today. a friend in england who watched the video told the associated press he had mixed feel beings seeing his friend while grateful he appeared well he said he's more capable of withstanding the circumstances than anybody else i know. but it does not take away from feeling really depressed seeing him there. it is important to know when or where the video was produced. more fallout tonight after

mystery continues over the death of a u.s. soldier collapsed and died while talking to his wife on skype. army officials say captain bruce clark's autopsy revealed no bullet wounds or evidence of foul play. clark was at an army base near the afghan capital during the skype video session. his wife says she saw a bullet hole in the closet behind him. army investigators say it could be weeks before they know what killed kwlashg. they are waiting toxicology

results. now to the nation's obesity epidemic. the centers for disease control says obesity affects 17% of all children and adolescents in the united states. that's triple the rate from just one generation ago. a local doctor is trying to do something about it. erika gonzalez joins us with details. >> after years of treating children for cholesterol and hypertension, the doctor decided to start the first ongoing childhood obesity center in northern virginia. his story is about a lot more than just teaching kids how to eat well. take a look. meet 17-year-old jennifer hoya. she took on night classes so she could graduate high school a year early. she wants to be a civil engineer. she spent four to six hours a day doing handwritten work. leaving little time to care for herself, eat right and exercise. >> breathe out. >> reporter: she began having chronic headaches and severe chest pain. she was diagnosed as being

boundary. showers tonight and off to the west. in through portions of west virginia, and down through maryland and pennsylvania. tomorrow most of the showers once again will stay to the west until about 5:00 and that's when we have the frontal boundary coming through. notice right around the i-95 corridor starting to see shower activity and then we will see a chance for showers and thunderstorms again during the day wednesday. not a washout on tuesday, not a washout on wednesday. and we really do need to see the rain. this system just doesn't have a whole lot with it over the next few days. if you get a storm right over your area you could see a half inch to an inch of rain. we need it. this evening mostly cloudy and seasonable and dry. temperatures 61 to 64 degrees. this is about 8:00 tonight. move on through the day into tomorrow morning. you will see mostly cloudy skies. breezy and cool. 56 to 62. as that frontal boundary moves in, winds will start to kick up. we will see winds gusting upwards of 25 miles per hour. mostly cloudy and chance of thunderstorms. some could be strong.

a car plowed into the building on good luck road near kenilworth avenue. just before 4:00 this morning. the police say the driver lost control of the car, jumped the curb and drove right smack into the apartment. nobody was hurt. police are not saying whether the driver will face charges. starting today it is officially legal to carry a gun in a virginia state park. state code has been changed to allow firearms to be openly carried in state parks. governor bob mcdonnell has been working to make this change since he was the state's attorney general back in '08. at that time tim kaine was governor and he disagreed the law should be changed. but last year, the governor ordered the state department of conservation and recreation to stop enforcing the ban and as of today, the practice is officially legal. the future of air travel has landed in the district. boeing's 787 dream liner is more fuel efficient and supposed to even cut down on jet lag. news4's derrick ward got the chance to check it out and gives

two high school students killed in a car crash right after leaving their senior prom. the driver lost control of the car and hit a tree on wrench road in hagerstown, maryland. both victims were honor students and excelled in sports. chris gordon reports now that their deaths have devastated the community. >> reporter: it is the tragedy every community fears a fatal

crash on prom night. this one happened saturday. just before the stroke of midnight. three hours earlier, samantha kelly and brendan cauliflower were all smiles, posing for this picture. they were heading back from the prom held in west virginia. he was driving on a country road that dips before left curve. he apparently lost control of the car. it crashed into this tree. brendan and samantha died on the scene good right now it appears speed was a factor in the accident. we are waiting on toxicology and whatnot to come back to rule out whether alcohol was involved. but it doesn't appear to be a factor. >> reporter: they were both about to graduate from williamsport high school. samantha kelly the star of the volleyball team, and number one tennis player for the school. teammates cut down the tennis net in her honor and planned to attend college in frostburg state.

brendan cauliflower, friend now wears his soccer shirt. he was an all-star pitcher and an outstanding hitter who was planning to play baseball for salisbury university. friends brought flowers, some shared memories of two of the most talented and popular teens they have ever known. >> can't believe it. he was just one of the nicest people i ever met. both of them. both saints. it is unbelievable they are gone. >> as a parent i feel really saddened all of the things that their parents aren't going to experience that are coming up, marriage, family, babies, college. >> reporter: after leaving all of these flowers and wiping away all of these tears, the message they leave behind is you will always be remembered. in hagerstown, maryland, chris gordon, news4. police in montgomery county arrest ad middle school teacher today who they say sexually abused a student. the suspect is 50-year-old tyler cornell. he is a seventh grade teacher.

investigators tell us that he met his victim in class last school year and began hanging out with the student outside of school. they say that the relationship continue flood this school year and witnesses tipped them off after contacting administrators. doug has another check on the weather. >> looking okay. plenty of cloud cover, temperatures of 70 degrees. not bad afternoon. we have winds out of the south right now at 14 miles an hour. every once in a while we are getting a peek of sunshine out there. we are not going to see too much more in the way of sun. clouds will continue to stick around. 68 now in rockville. 66 in gaithersburg. 68 in reston, fairfax county. manassas coming in at 72 degrees. temperatures are a little bit below average. we saw a high temperature of 72 degrees. no rain right now. rain just off to the west. back towards petersburg. back in through portions of western virginia, garrett county. towards frostburg you will see some of the showers and storms if you are making your way on i-70. lot of showers and storms,

though, just out to the west. lot of moisture out here. lot of instability. a frontal boundary, you see that front right there and that's going to mauck its way our way. we will see a chance of showers tomorrow. most likely to the west. talking about areas around i-81. if you live near i-81, good chance of seeing rain tomorrow. around the i-95 corridor only about a 40% chance of seeing showers or storms. those would be late in the day. better chance for everybody on wednesday. overnight lows tonight, down to 57 in washington. 54 in gaithersburg. a little cool when you wake up tomorrow morning. not too bad. temperatures tomorrow afternoon, i think we will see some sunshine tomorrow. that will help temperatures bump up into the mid 70s. 77 in leesburg. 78 in manassas. 78 in culpeper. there will be a chance of showers once again. best chance to the west of the i-95 corridor. south and east, slight chance down there for you folks portions of southern maryland. most of the day. tomorrow should be dry and wednesday for you folks will be a little bit more on the wet side. coming up all winter long or all

today we met up with erin and she talked about that moment. is there anything you think you could have done differently to get america in your corner, perhaps even working under a ditch coach that could have changed the outcome of things? >> i don't think that i would have gotten as far as if i didn't have blake as my coach. personally, he was there for me in a different way than any other coach would have been. i truly felt like it wasn't enough. i truly felt like when the pressure was on, you know, not that i crumbled a little bit but i got lost in the situation that i was in. it was the first time that i finally soaked up what exactly was happening. >> reporter: erin tells me tonight she will be rooting for the guy she lost to, jermaine. she says he was on her team and wants to see him finish. the gritty voice rocker juliet simms who i saw walk through. she's having a bit of a cold but

the government called illegal campaign contributions from heiress rachel "bunny mellon. >> anything that shows john edwards had knowledge that the money from mellon and fred baron was being used to further their campaign is significant for the government. >> reporter: analysts say testimony from mellon's attorney this morning may have backfired. >> explained his client, bunny mellon, was clear and certain that the $700,000 or so that ultimately wound up with an rue and young went on to rielle hunter, was intended to assist john edwards with a personal matter. he also indicated that john edwards, as far as he knew, knew nothing about the money. >> reporter: there are indication it is state could wrap up its case this week. and some believe that it could close with a bang. >> i think it is likely the government will call rielle hunter as the crowning part of their case. >> reporter: the mistress at the center of the legal and political soap opera has yet to appear but has been the focus of
