leading news station, this is news4 midday. good morning, everyone welcome to news4 midday i'm barbara harrison, tuesday may 8th, 2012. two teachers facing child sex abuse charges. aaron lamair accused of inappropriate contact with two students. he resigned from his job as media services tech at northwood high school in silver spring. police say they also found child pornography on the computer he used while working at school. they say the pornography did not include images of norwood students. a 7th grade teacher at ne frnlsville middle school, cuyler

cornell is accused of having inappropriate contact with a 14-year-old student. been on leave since february mt. a woman will need extensive plastic surgery, a dog bit her lips off on rose theater circle in olney. tracee wilkins talked with neighbors. >> reporter: neighbors tell me she is called the dog whisperer of the neighborhood. she has such a good relationship with the animals that if someone is having a problem with their dog, that is who they take the animal to see. now, she is recovering from an unexpected dog attack. this olney suburb is the perfect neighborhood for dog lovers. >> almost every single house has a dog or two. >> reporter: part of the reason so many people here are shocked by yesterday's dog attack.

he saw the woman who was attacked. >> i saw a young lady sitting on the grass and two other people helping her out she was bleeding around her face. >> reporter: animal control officials say a 24-year-old woman was walking her parents rottweiler when the dog attacked the neighbor. everyone involved lives in the neighborhood, they all know one another. >> the neighbor i saw helping her out was really stressed out and she -- i was looking at her face, i recognized her, i knew something was terribly wrong. >> reporter: animal control officials say the woman was severely injured, will require a number of plastic surgeries to correct the damage done. the incident has left people who live here wondering how this will now impact this dog-lovers paradise. >> we are dog lovers, when something like that happens, when look at ourselves and say

my dog would never do that, but there are certain breeds that do stuff like that. >> reporter: montgomery county animal control will be investigating to try to figure out exactly what led to the attack. in the meantime, the dolg is now restricted to the homeowner home it can go outside to relieve itself and then back in the house. no visiting public spaces. that is going to be the deal over the next ten days or at least until the investigation is wrapped up. in olney tracee wilkins, news4. a group of animal lovers are asking maryland governor to reverse a maryland court ruling that deemed all pit bulls as dangerous. the baltimore sun votes groups are calling the governor to ask him to override the decision. the ruling means people attacked by pit bulls longer have to prove prior violent behavior.

i-66 things look good. yesterday road work taking away the left lane, right now 59 miles per hour, 11 minutes from the fairfax county lin to the belt way. a woman is behind bars gloria mcmillan hit and killed shelinda arrington with her suv. she had been on the run until last night. one driver's strange behavior in manassas. corbin shannon faces four charges including reckless driving, virginia state police say shannon was driving the honda suv that you see there, police say when he pulled out from the shoulder, right in the path it caused a crash right there. after the crash witnesses told

police shannon ran in traffic and jumped on four cars, even smashing the windshield of one of them. he was taken to the hospital and held overnight for observation. police have ruled out alcohol and drugs as a factor in this case. d.c. will pay out thousands of dollars to a handful of people who challenged their drunk driving convictions. four people will receive $20,000 each. they were part of a group of 20 that said their convictions were based on breathalyzer scores from machines that weren't calibrated correctly and therefore, inaccurate. the other 16 cases are still pending. last february, police were ordered to stop using those machines because of the inat rat test results inaccurate. the one that got away. what looked like a sure win now sets up a must-win for the caps. the rangers -- yep, the rangers

. new on news4 midday, popular childrens book author maurice sendak has died. he wrote "where the wild things are" and "in the night kitchen" he suffered a stroke friday. he died at a hospital in danbury, connecticut this morning. he was 83 years old. we're learning more about a plot to blow up a plane traveling to the u.s. scheduled to happen around the anniversary of osama bin laden's death. the fbi has the evidence. we have more on the foiled plot. >> reporter: the plastic device is at the fbi's crime lab at

quantico. experts will determine how it was made and if it would have made it through airport security. the experts say this was a more refined version of the underwear bomb that failed to detonate in 2009. this would be bomber had not picked a target or bought a plane ticket when the cia stepped in and seized the device. john brennan, president obama's chief counter terrorism advisor, appeared on "the today show" this morning. >> what the fbi is doing is looking at this ied and see what type of modifications, retine ments may have been made. whatever we learn we will insure it will be incorporated in the measures we take at airports as well as any other avenues of approach that the would-be terrorist would take. >> reporter: the obama administration says passengers were never in danger. they have found out about the plot last month, followed it, then shut it down. >> the terrorists keep trying to

s santaram urged supporters to support romney. polls in west virginia are open now until 7:30 this evening. two new polls show the race between president obama and mitt romney virtually a dead-heat at this time. the 12 swing states surveyed by galop and usa today, the president edged out romney 47 to 45%, with 4 point margin for error. in march the president held a nine point lead and a politico poll shows romney with the one point lead over the president. >> the senate will vote on plan to keep interest rates on federal student loans from doubling july 1st. democrats want to pay for the freeze with a tax hike to social security and medicare payroll taxes for privately owned

companies. republicans are demanding a vote on their own alternative. it would also freeze interest rates for a year but money would come from eliminating preventive health program. allowing interest rates to double would cost the average student about $1000 more over the life of the loan. tom is going to talk about the weather. we might see more rain out there today, is that right? >> we need it, we do have a gray sky, we had a lot of cloudiness around this morning, around dawn we had quite a bit of sunshine breaking out just south and east of washington it's rather sunny but right over the metro area, it's all cloudy, that is a live view overlooking the potomac river. reagan national, a few thin spots on the cloud cover at 70. a rather brisk breeze coming in from the south off the river at 15, 20 miles an hour. elsewhere under the clouds, north and west of washington just in the mid 60s, most locations, south and east where the sun shines out, beginning to

climb in the low 70s. this area will probably have the highest temperatures in the upper 70s, southern maryland, fredericksburg, charlottesville, most areas west of i-95 are cloudy. from space, the break of the clouds south and east, but the cloud area is hanging in. getting light showers in the shenandoah valley, nomoving fro the southwest to the northeast, embedded waves of low pressure slowly drifting our way but the clo closest rain in loudon county, l is heavier rain but not heavy in the shenandoah, allegheny and garrett county. that will continue to advance through during the afternoon from time to time, maybe thunder and lightning, too. of we have temperatures likely reaching upper 70s, southern maryland, low to mid 70s around

the metro area, southerly breeze to 20 miles per hour. then this evening, you need an umbrella, flashes of lightning, temperatures near 70 at sunset, 8:08, by midnight to the mid 60s. over the next 48 hours, this area of color the zone of potential rain, looks like heavier rain to the north at northeast of washington but likely get enough rain, a quarter half an inch by the time it tapers off by late evening, this moving color is potential rain. then as we get in wednesday in the morning, might have some low clouds, drizzle around and maybe a few breaks in the clouds but during the afternoon, a chance for more showers to more through, and that area of rain will move east and by late on wednesday night, we will begin to clear out and have sunshine back on thursday. so a couple days with rain, we certainly do need it, like to make up the deficit, will likely reach 70s tomorrow and maybe a

on news4 midday, the fbi is now analyzing a sophisticated explosive device that al qaeda planned to detonate on a u.s. jetliner. the bomb was recovered in a covert cia operation in yemen, before a suicide bomber could buy a plane ticket. u.s. officials are trying to determine if the device could have passed through an airport metal detector and taken down a commercial airline. new today, the chances of a teen driver dying behind the wheel quadruples when h more of their young friends are in the car with them. right now triple a is releasing the latest teen driver study on capitol hill. megan mcgraph has more.

>> reporter: the summer months is when h most of the deadly accidents occur. when we talk about distracted driving, we're not talking high tech gizmo, in many cases the problem can be the driver's young friends. much has been said about the dangers of cell phone use and texting and driving. but a new study says just having young friends in the car can significantly increase a teen's chance of dying in a crash. it's a fact not too surprising to 17-year-old elliott johnson. >> when you have people in the back seat hollering to the song on the radio, singing along or laughing at something on the side of the road, all those distractions add up to the driver can become a serious problem. >> reporter: according to the study, a 16 or 17-year-old driver's risk of death increases 44% when carrying one passenger younger than 21. the risk of death doubles when carrying two young passengers

and quadruples when three or more are under 21. it's a matter of focus and concentration. the more young people in the car, the more distracted an inexperienced driver becomes and the result often proves deadly. julie and lowell gardner know the payin. their son died five years ago. they started a scholarship program in his memory, their hope to get teens to think about the dangers they face behind the wheel and spare other families their sorrow. it never gets easier, this helps but it lives with you every day it's there everyday. there are days where you're fine but there are days where i'll be riding down the road and i will just break down. it's like he's right there. he's always with me, he's always on my shoulder. >> the domino effect hits every person in your family, it just

completely annialiates anything you thought you had going on. >> reporter: while driving young friends around can prove deadly for a teenage driving, the opposite is true if there is an adult passenger in the car. in fact if someone 35 or older is riding shotgun, that cuts the teen driver's risk of being killed in an accident by 62%. reporting live on capitol hill, megan mcgraph, news4. thank you, megan. smartphones are big targets for thieves on metro, this morning in a news4 exclusive, amazing video shows riders taking the matter in their own hands. it happened last month on the red line during the evening rush. check out the upper left of the platform, that apparently is a moment a thief snatches an iphone from a rider's hands but as he's running from the staying, angry passengers follow, they surround him and when he tries to make another break for it, they get physical, wrestling him to the ground. ultimately police arrived to

arrest the man. despite their good deeds, metro says they prefer riders call police rather than taking matters in their own hands. prince harry accepted an award recognizing his work with the wounded soldiers. he attended a black tie event. news4 was there when the prince slipped out of the ritz-carlton, he received the distinguished humanitarian award. harry said being introduce bid colin powell was humbling and terrifying. at the ceremony, he urged the british and americans to help wounded veterans. >> the very least h we owe them is to make sure that they and their brave families have everything they need through the darkest days and in time, regain the hope and confidence to flourish again. >> earlier he was at the british ambassador's residence to visit

ridge. first sprinkles in far western fairfax county. that should be moving toward the metro area over the next hour or so, light showers, maybe thunder and lightning by late afternoon. then overnight tonight, any lingering showers dissipating around midnight, then tomorrow might get a shower in the morning but greater chance midday during the afternoon. then sun back thursday, friday, in the weekend, dry pattern, cool mornings, mild afternoon, monday might get rain, small chance of that the way it looks right now, barbara? >> thank you, tom. a first grade teacher and two young daughters are thanking the rescuers who spent hours saving them after a horrific accident. the family's car was dangling from a bridge in santa barbara, california in january after a tractor-trailer rear-ended them. the truck plummeted off the same bridge, killing the driver when rescuers first arrived they could do little without risking the lives of the woman and her

children. >> did you feel the car teetering? did you feel it was slipping? >> there were moments that i would feel a little jolt, more so when the rescuers were trying to cut through the metal, at that first instant it was looking down knowing this is most likely what will happen. >> this morning was the first opportunity the family had to thank the rescuers face-to-face. the fire department had rescue, navy personnel on the way home from training were stuck in the traffic back-up from the accident and offered to help with the traffic there. but it turned out the men were transporting a special forklift that was used to stablize the family's car so they can be pulled from the wreckage safely. let's take another look at midday traffic, here is danella. >> right now taking the metro, you can experience delays. seeing delays on the red line, orange line and blue line due to scheduled track work. delays in both directions.

diminish the puffiness and the swelling around the eyes. >> how long should that be on there? >> you can do that, 10, 15 minutes, a nice cool soak. if you refrigerate it, it's nice and cold. next thing is castor oil, not a lot of people know about this, but castor oil is a nice light oil, different from mineral oil, it's very light, there is no fragrance, it's great for the eye lashes. using just a little bit of this with a cotton appelicator is rubbed on the top area of the upper eye lashes, and so that's one thing that helps really nicely. i just lost my q-tip. here it is. it helps your eyelids from drying out and promote growth. >> put it on the lash? >> put it on the top layer of the eye lash on the eyelid. >> anything else? >> another thing for hair is
