combination and permutation and door to door to find a suspect. and it turns out, she has a history with police. the suspect, 32-year-old gloria mcmillan. the victim, 21-year-old sha linda arrington. they both live in apartments on lockheed boulevard, about a half mile apart. they were not known to each other. mcmillan's driving history. according to court records, mcmillan has been cited for driving on a suspended or revoked license, reckless driving, several speeding tickets, and a number of moving violations in prince george's county, arlington county, and fairfax county. the new charge. a felony charge. police say it stems from a case of road rage. they say last friday on a street near their homes, the two women got into an exchange of words. they got out of their cars.

it got more heated. they say suspect mcmillan got into her chevy suv and took off, and as she did, she struck and killed shalinda arrington. the charge, felony hit and run. >> detectives do not have evidence to support that the suspect did this intentionally. >> reporter: the big break. shortly after the incident, police put out a lookout for a black chevy suv spotted leaving the scene. it had paper tags. but they only had had three of the numbers on the tag. that turned out to be just enough. >> one of our homicide detectives sat down in front of a computer, and just ran every conceivable combination involving those digits, and came up with a list of potential suspects vehicles. >> reporter: the lesson learned. >> if people are engaged in some type of a road rage incident, if emotions are running high, do

yourself a favor. take a deep breath, turn the other cheek, drive away. >> reporter: now, remember, no matter what words are said or what gestures are made, don't leave your car. suspect mcmillan held without bond tonight, pending further court action in the case. live in fairfax county, i'm pat collins, news4. shot behind the wheel. two people are injured while driving on a highway in temple hills around 2:00 this morning. this was on branch avenue near the beltway. police say the people in the car were shot at and ended up crashing. the driver was hit by the gunfire, taken to the hospital with nonlife threatening injuries. and a passenger suffered some minor injuries, so far, there have been no arrests. an olney woman is facing extensive reconstructive surgery after part of her face was bit bitten off by a dog. the attack happened last night in a quiet neighborhood. jane watrel with more on the story. >> reporter: montgomery county police say a tacks like this one are rare. the victim and the dog knew each

other. what's more, neighbors say, if they had any behavioral problems with their dogs, they would always take them to this woman. a neighborhood in shock after a well-known dog lover suffered a severe facial attack. it happened along rose theater circle, when a 24-year-old woman was walking her father's rottweiler. it was then that the victim, known to the neighborhood as the dog whisperer, stopped to chat. >> while this conversation was occurring, the dog, although on a leash, was able to jump up and bite the victim on the face. >> reporter: the attack floored most who live here, who say there is almost one dog per household in this tight knit neighborhood. allan add me saw the victim shortly after the incident occurred. >> i saw a young lady sitting over there on the grass, and two other people helping her out. and she was completely bleeding around her face. >> reporter: montgomery county animal control officers have ordered a ten-day quarantine of the rottweiler, which will

remain home behind closed doors. the victim has told neighbors she doesn't want to press charges. despite the fact she will face multiple reconstructive surgeries. >> she loves dogs, carries treats in her pocket. and i suspect the dog was a little agitated, and she went to comfort the dog, and the dog attacked her. that's all i know. i wasn't there. but -- and my understanding, she said don't put the dog down. it's not the dog's fault. >> reporter: montgomery county authorities say while they will take the victim's wishes into their account, they will have the final say as to what happens to the rottweiler. the dog, by the way, has no history of attacking or biting anyone. >> all right, jane watrel. thank you, jane. a woman who had her purse snatched by a police impersonator in montgomery county is now talking about that attack. the woman was pulled over last wednesday as she was leaving church in silver springs. she told police that a man approached her car. he flashed a badge. asked for her i.d.

told her to get out of the car. he then searched her vehicle and he took her purse and her cell phone. through a translator tonight, the woman told news4 about her ordeal. >> translator: i'm trying to forget what happened. and i thank god that it wasn't anything else more serious. >> this is a sketch of the suspect. police also want to remind residents, the traffic stops are not done by officers in unmarked cars. new detailsemerging tonight about that foiled airline bomb plot. federal officials now say the plan was disrupted, because the cia had a source inside al qaeda in yemen, who was acting as the bomber. nbc's pete williams has more on this developing story. >> reporter: what american intelligence officials say, this was a huge intelligence success. that allied intelligence services, that is to say the u.s. and its allies, were actually able to place an intelligence source into the

heart of al qaeda in the arabian peninsula. the terror group that is considered the number-one threat to america. and that's why administration officials have been saying for the past 12 hours or so, that this operation was in control. what that meant is, they were following in such detail, they actually had the capability of shutting it down whenever they want. what happened is, as it was wrapped up, the bomb was actually driven out of yemen, given to the united states, and it's been here for the past week. now, as for the device itself, they say it's fundamentally the same as the underwear bomb in 2009, with some substantial improvements. but the basic design is the same. so they say it presents neither more nor less challenge to airport screeners to find, and for that reason, they say we're probably not going to see much of a difference in terms of screening at the airports. back to you. >> fbi experts are now picking apart that bombing device to see if it could have gotten through security and taken down an airline. well, we do need the rain, and we are getting it. some areas are seeing it right

now. storm 4 chief meteorologist doug kammerer. he's tracking it on the radar. is it out of here, or is more coming through? >> it is just about out of here, at least in some areas right now. some locations picking up a tenth to a quarter inch of rain today. we do need to see more and it does look like we'll have that chance over the next 24 hours. 73 degrees, the current temperature right now, with winds out of the south at 12 miles per hour. it's on the mild side. but definitely damp, too. of current temperature, 69 in martinsbu martinsburg, 66 in frederick, 71 towards annapolis, and 77 degrees down towards fredericksburg. a lot of rain the last few hours, but now just a few showers left over, and we are going to see a chance for more as we widen out here. you can see more showers and even a few thunderstorms back to the west. these will try to move in through the rest of the evening and into the overnight hours. and then another round will come in during the day tomorrow. i'll show you where that comes from, and what to expect for your wednesday, in just a minute. >> all right, thanks, doug. the senate failed to advance a bill today that would freeze

interest rates on federal student loans for another year, which means some of those rates could soon double. lawmakers voted 52-45 on this mesh. that's short of the 60 votes needed to move the bill forward and begin debate. the vote was along party lines. democrats or republicans cannot agree on how to pay for this legislation. some student loan interest rates could jump from 3.4% to 6.8% on july 1st, if congress does not act. president obama is stepping up the pressure tonight on congress to tackle other economic issues. today, he made a stop at a college science complex, in albany, new york and unveiled a congressional to do list. it features five proposals that he says create jobs and grow the economy. >> i know there's an election here. but it's not an excuse for inaction. six months is plenty of time for democrats and republicans to get together and do the right thing. taking steps that will spur

found out little things mean a lot to your wallet when it comes to gas economy. >> most of us feel hopeless when we pull up to the pump. because of the high cost of gas. >> reporter: our experiment starts with two new 2012 lincoln mkzs. we borrowed them from east-west lincoln mercury in landover hills, maryland. the cars were identical, until we got our hands on them. and created some fuelish mistakes. east-west lincoln sales consu consultant nathan gray was our bad gas mileage driver. we lowered the recommended tire pressure by 7 pounds per tire. we loaded 200 pounds of extra weight in the trunk. >> we've loaded it down with two full golf bags, free weights, luggage. >> reporter: we set his air conditioning to full blast, 60 degrees. >> you can save money by the way you drive and how you drive. >> reporter: john town send from aaa was our good gas mileage

driver. his lincoln had proper tire pressure, no extra weight in the trunk, and he used no ac. we filled both cars' gas tanks to the top and set off. first, we stopped and started in traffic. nathan did jackrabbit starts. john, slow and steady. on the highway, our good driver used cruise control at 55. our bad mileage driver? zoomed up, slowed down, and drove up to the speed limit 65 miles per hour. so will the condition of the two cars and the way our testers drove them really affect gas mileage? 90 miles later -- we topped off our tanks. >> it stunned me. >> reporter: our bad gas mileage car used 3.6 gallons. it got 26 miles per gallon. our good gas mileage car used 2.8 gallons, or 33 miles per

that -- plenty of cloud cover. winds out of the south right now at 12 miles per hour. we have seen a little break or two here as far as the sun is concerned. but not a lot of sunshine at all across the region today. and that's kept temperatures on the cool side. 66, a lot of rain in frederick today. 69 in martinsburg, also saw rain much of the day. 72 in manassas, 77 in frexburg and 73 in la plata. south of washington, you didn't see much rain at all. most was north and west. martinsburg, frederick, leesburg, gaithersburg. of to the south, fredericksburg, no rain. waldorf 100th of an inch. some of us got it today but the rest of us need it too. now, showers right along 270 and the intercounty connector. we are seeing showers, and those showers will continue to make their way towards the north and east, towards howard county where we have a couple more. and fairfax county, light sprinkles here. but most of us should stay dry throughout the remainder of the

evening. until we see this next batch of rain come in, this next batch of rain, if it holds together, and it's going to have a hard time doing so, is going to make its way through here overnight tonight. we will see a chance for some scattered showers overnight tonight, and then we'll watch an area of low pressure form, along this frontal boundary and make its way to the north. so that frontal boundary making its way across our region with those showers, but tomorrow, here comes the area of low pressure. that's going to enhance our rainfall during the day tomorrow, especially south and east of washington. so today, it was north and west. tomorrow, it will be south and east. places like fredericksburg and places like southern maryland will have a better chance of seeing rain during the day tomorrow, as that area of low pressure moves on by, thursday, maybe a few showers early. but right now, thursday is looking pretty good with sunshine late in the day. rather breezy during the day on thursday, if not windy, with winds 25 to 30 miles per hour. and then friday, and the rest of the week, well, i'll show you this. continued cloudy, areas of showers throughout the evening. but not too many. breezy and mild. 61 to 66. tomorrow morning, i think we

dan is here with sports. >> dan is here with a local high school. this is a lacrosse coach who has marked a milestone, we're hearing? >> yeah, one of the best lacrosse coaches really ever, anywhere you're going to find. this is the 20th anniversary of title 9. it's a federal law created to level the playing field between men's and women's sports in

college. coincidentally, that same year, a 20-year-old college student walked into the saint steven's and saint ago necessary school looking for a job. today that college student, cathy jenkins, is one of the most successful lacrosse coaches ever. zachary kesah has the story. >> reporter: when cathy jenkins arrived at saint agnes school in 1971, she was a 20-year-old looking for a job. over the next years, she would grow in the way similar to the hundreds of lives she has touched in the classroom and create one of the most successful lacrosse programs in the country. >> i just was really lucky. a friend of mine was teaching here and she said do you want a job and i said yes, i was 20 years old. i showed up the first day, i didn't have an interview. >> reporter: it wasn't until 1976 that she co founded the lacrosse program. it was pretty grass roots in the beginning. in fact, a lot has changed since the early '70s.

including merging with the boys saint stevens school in 1991. but amongst all the changes, the one constant has been, jenkins. >> i think it's what keeps me young. and keeps me going. every day, i look forward to coming here every day and being with the team. >> reporter: over the past 37 seasons, jenkins has made a habit of winning. her teams have won 24 conference tournament championships. 21 league titles. six state titles. and have had eight undefeated seasons. last week, the team helped jenkins ring in her 600th career win. >> i need to keep them focused. i gave them three days off and let them relax and have a good time, and then back to -- you know, back to hard work. >> reporter: the wins haven't come unnoticed by colleges. through the years, she has sent hundreds of athletes to play at the college level and evenen been offered a few coaching jobs herself. but she stayed. >> my four children went here, they had great opportunities, and i feel like they learned how to be a student, and an athlete.

a fast forward through the headlines now. an alexandria woman is charged in a deadly road rage attack. police tell us gloria mcmillan ran over 21-year-old shalinda arrington after an argument in the valley yesterday. that was last week. mcmillan has a history of traffic violations, including reckless driving and speeding. the terror bomb plot revealed yesterday disrupted because the cia had a source inside al qaeda and yemen. a man posing as the bomber. homeland security says there's no need to change airport screening procedures, even though the plot uncovered a new kind of undetectable underwear bomb. a woman in olney will need extensive reconstructive surgery after being attacked by a neighbor's dog. animal control officers have ordered a ten-day quarantine of the rottweiler. the victim does not plan to press charges. two montgomery county school employees arrested for sex

crimes related to children. today, one of them went before a judge. >> aaron lamere was charged after a child porn investigation turned up allegations of inappropriate relationships with at least three students. today, police are trying to find out if there are anymore. >> news4's countries gordon live with the latest. chris. >> reporter: northwood high school students and their parents were shocked to learn the allegations that young boys here were allegedly solicited for sex. it allegedly happened in northwood high school in the auditorium area where plays are staged. 39-year-old aaron lamare worked in the audio visual department until early march when he resigned for personal reasons. a school counselor was later surprised when told that two students had received telephone texts from mr. lamare soliciting sex. police detectives began an investigation when child pornography was found on a laptop computer lamare used at the school, that included the

naked picture of a former student. lamere was arrested. he appeared in montgomery county district court today, facing more than a dozen charges, including possession of child pornography, sexual solicitation of a minor, sex abuse of a minor, and indecent exposure. judge patricia mitchell set bond at $50,000. his lawyer argued for a lower bond, saying he poses no danger to the community. >> he hasn't made any attempt to go back and intimidate anyone. or to try and interfere in any way with the police investigation. >> reporter: police have now identified three victims at northwood, and are trying to determine if there are any others. the principal at northwood sent a note home with students about aaron lamare's arrest. >> i was surprised. i'm not in the drama field, but i was surprised hearing about it. >> reporter: another problem facing montgomery county public schools became public yesterday. neilsville middle school in german toup also had a member of its staff arrested. the principal's letter to

parents says, kyler cornel was charged with having inappropriate contact with a minor. >> sources within the school system saw behavior that alerted them that something wasn't right in the relationship between the defendant and at least one boy. >> reporter: the montgomery county public school system will not comment on either of these two cases, but says that the schools reported the information to the police, and that the schools are cooperating in the investigations. that's the latest live in silver spring, maryland. i'm chris gordon, news4. >> smartphones are big targets for thieves on metro. but in a news4 exclusive tonight, amazing video showing riders taking the matter into their own hands. it happened last month on the red line. check out the top left side of the platform, as a thief snatches an iphone from a rider's hands. as he runs from the station, angry passengers follow. they surround him and when he

tries to make another break for it, they get physical wrestling him to the ground. police arrived to arrest the man. metro now knows what caused some brake parts to follow off trains causing major delays earlier this year. according to a report by the "washington post" mechanical fatigue caused the friction rings to fall off the rail cars before their intended life span. one ring fell off in december, damaging two cars and delaying service for hours on the orange and blue lines. another fell off in january near the stadium armory station. a battle is brewing over proposal to raise alcohol taxes in the district. dozens of bar owners, hotel and restaurant and grocery companies turned out at a d.c. council hearing to denounce any increase in the alcohol tax. reps of the new brewing -- of new brewing companies in the city say higher taxes would favor urban and companies, and cost city jobs. >> this would be a disaster for the small distilling industry in the district. anding again, it would drive new distilleries to locate in

surrounding states, such as maryland. >> the craft brewers in the city, which is a growing industry, would be suddenly totally at a disadvantage of our ground in virginia restaurant and food sales and liquor industry. >> d.c. council member jim graham says he may propose the alcohol increase to help pay for city social services. his proposal will add 6 cents to the cost of each drink in the district. a look tonight at the dangers of distracted driving. researchers say the risk of a deadly crash sky rockets for teens who ride with their friends. but if there is an adult present, the risk diminishes. megan mcgrath has more now on the findings. >> reporter: much has been said about the dangers of cell phone use and texting and driving. but a new study says just having young friends in the car can significantly increase a teen's chance of dying in a crash. it's a fact not too surprising to 17-year-old elliot johnson. >> when you have people in the back seat, hollering to the song

that's on the radio, singing along or laughing at something on the side of the road, all those distractions truly add up to the driver and it can become a serious problem. >> reporter: according to the aaa study, a 16 or 17-year-old driver's risk of death increases 44% when carrying one passenger younger than 21. the risk of death doubles when carrying two young passengers, and quadruples when there are three or more passengers under the able of 21. researchers say it's a matter of focus and concentration. the more young people in the car, the more distracted an inexperienced driver becomes. and the result often proves deadly. julian lowell garner know the pain of such loss. their 16-year-old son hunter died in a crash five years ago. they started the project, yellow scholarship program in hunter's memory. their hope, to get teens to think about the dangers they face behind the wheel, and spare other families their sorrow. >> it never gets easier.

because it's really high on the glycemic index and also easier for your body to digest of the when you're out there and you're fatigued and tired, the last thing you want to do is take the energy away from your muscles, and use it to digest food. >> reporter: smith says the rice with the soy sauce also helps to replace lost water and salt due to sweating. speaking of hydration, some of the guys we spoke to say they often pass on sports drinks, and go for something a little different. >> my roommate and i have been sucking back some pedialytes. it's kind of weird that we're picking up a bunch of bottles at the cash register. >> i know. that sounds disgusting to me too. but pedialite has less sugar and that's why some of the players prefer it. they also emphasize they don't eat too much before a game, because they need to stay light on their skates. that's hard work out there. and for a long period of time. that's also why it's so important for them to snack between periods.

his owners dropped him off for grooming at just for pets. 90 minutes later they got a call. buster fled through this open back door when a staffer stepped outside. >> i think i cried for to two hours straight, honestly. i was terrified of the worst. >> reporter: corey and her husband gathered family and friends and along with staffers began to search. after several hours, they spied buster cowering in the bushes in a 7-eleven. but her joy turned to anger when she went online and learned buster wasn't the first dog to escape at just for pets. in december of 2010, news4 reported about the frantic search for sissy who walked behind the facility. the beloved pet was later found dead alongside the road. >> we were so upset and then to find that out also was just pure anger. like, how could they let this happen again? >> reporter: the owner of just for pets did not want to be interviewed on camera. but she tells me she is making a

change in the gating system around the back door in response to buster's escape. she also told news4, quote, it's a business that deals with a lot of dogs and sometimes things happen. we take the best care of these dogs. we really do a superb job. the owner of these two dogs agrees. she says she drives out of her way to take them to just for pets for daycare. >> i know every day that i drop the dogs off at the daycare that they're going to enjoy their day, they're going to be well taken care. i just think it was a very unfortunate accident. >> but corey views the care as negligent and says she'll make a much closer inspection of the next grooming facility she picks for buster. in springfield, julie carey, news4. clouds and showers. here's doug with another check on our forecast. >> take a look out there right now. we are shocked in with the clouds. and we have seen them just about all day long. i saw the sun one time during the day today. and when that sun did come out for five minutes t did help to raise the temperature up just a little bit. but the temperatures are nice and mild for this time of year.

actually, right around average temperatures, 73 degrees. the reason we got so warm, south wind at 12 miles per hour. that southerly wind bringing in some warmer temperatures. but still rather cool to the north. only 66 in gaithersburg, 68 in leesburg, 74 in college park. and 7 2 in ft. belvoir. temperatures in the upper 60s to lower 70s today, even though we saw plenty of cloud cover and we saw the rain. a lot of rain just to the north, and west of washington, leesburg, parts of montgomery county, over towards howard county, frederick, over towards the martinsburg area and winchester, all picking up a tenth to quarter inch of much-needed rainfall. and there's more rain to come. we have another area of rain right out here in through west virginia. that's going to try to make its way in here throughout the rest of the evening hours and into the overnight. i do think we'll see isolated showers during the evening and into the overnight hours. but i also think we'll see a better chance of rain during the day tomorrow, especially south and east of washington. tonight, chilly back to the west, into the 40s here, but 53 in fredericksburg, 63 in washington around the metro

milo were miraculously alive. seat belts, air bags and the baby's car seat saved them from the initial impact but their lives were hanging by a thread. any move was risky. >> each time we tried to pry her out, the car kept slepg a little more. >> reporter: groves pleaded for rescuers to save her children. and then an amazing stroke of luck. navy cbs just happened to drive by and then just happened to have a massive and rare piece of equipment that could stabilize the car. >> we said, we do have this forklift that's capable of picking up 11,000 pounds. we sure can hold that car up. and help save those lives that were trapped in that vehicle. >> it was a turning point for us. we knew at that point the vehicle wasn't going to fall. it also gave the platform for our rescuers to work from. >> reporter: it took a total of two hours and twenty one minutes, but once stable, firefighters could use the jaws of life, and all three were
