police on the scene of a shooting near a recreation center in the area. and two kidnapped girls found alive. and s.w.a.t. teams surrounded a man on the fbi's most wanted list. first to the goddard space flight center in green belt, maryland where the all-clear has been given now. a smoke alarm in a lab caused radiation alarms to start sounding just after 9:00. nasa officials say no radiation leak tonight. the goddard space flight center manages operations for the hubble space telescope and develops satellite systems for noaa. firefighters are still trying to figure out what prompted the smoke alarm. in landover, maryland an investigation is under way after a shooting near a rec center. it happened in kentland park off mlk highway. that's not far from fedex field. jackie bensen has our report from there. jackie? >> reporter: jim, a neighbor told me that she heard the gunshots just as she was getting ready to walk her dog. this happened about 9:00 p.m. tonight. here in the landover area. we can tell you that it happened on a wooded path near the

kentland park recreation center. the area's patrolled by officers from maryland national capital park police. they responded along with officers from the prince george's county police department. now, we're told the victim is an adult male. we do not know his age. his gunshot injuries are described by police as non-life-threatening. at this time he's being treated at a local hospital. the rec center was closed at the time of the shooting. so it's not clear at this point what the man was doing in this wooded area near the kentland rec center. reporting live in landover, jackie bentsen, news 4. we're also following break news involving a national fugitive. police in mississippi say the man accused of killing two tennessee women and kidnapping two girls is now dead. officers say 35-year-old adam moyes shot himself after a confrontation with the s.w.a.t. team. the two kidnapped girls, 12 and 8 years old rrk both safe. they're being examined at a hospital in northeast mississippi. one person in serious

condition tonight after a propane tank exploded at the national building museum. it happened in the kitchen just after 6:00. fire officials say the tank created a flash fire. the only person injured was taken to a hospital with burns on their hands and face. there was a gala scheduled tonight and the building itself was not evacuated. also tonight, a new report says mayor vincent gray's adult children have been given thousands of dollars' worth of sky suite tickets to d.c. concerts and sporting events. the mayor's office controls the tickets for a luxury box at verizon center and one at nationals park. according to wtop radio, the report says gray's son and daughter have gone to a number of shows and concerts instead of the mayor giving the tickets to civic groups and city kids. when gray was on the city council, he was critical of former mayor adrian finney for keeping the tickets in the mayor's office and not distributing them to council members. new tonight the denver nuggets excused chris "birdman"

anderson indefinitely from all team activities. today a police unit whose job it is to investigate child predators searched the player's house. the detectives seized items but wouldn't go into detail about what they took. andersen is not currently charged with a crime. he's been in the nba for ten years and plays backup center for denver. new details now on the secret service prostitution scandal. government investigators say they have now found and interviewed the colombian escort at the center of the scandal. dania landonia suarez voluntarily met with investigators at the u.s. embassy in spain. suarez spoke publicly last week and said she is the escort who contacted colombian police when one of the secret service agents failed to pay her. eight agents have lost their jobs. 12 members of the military have also been implicated. vice president joe biden has apologized to president obama in the oval office for speaking out about gay marriage. on the "meet the press" broadcast on sunday biden said

he is absolutely comfortable with same-sex couples having the same rights as heterosexual couples. yesterday the president came out in support of gay marriage. he says he made the announcement earlier than planned because of biden's remark. biden's press secretary says the vice president never meant to distract from the issue. mothers everywhere are talking about the new cover of "time" magazine and the conversation that has started about attachment parenting. wendy rieger is here tonight with more. wendy? >> reporter: well, the "time" cover is quite provocative, and the discussion it prompted quite emotional. the story about attachment parenting asking, are you mom enough, really hit a nerve. attachment parenting is a philosophy of dr. william sears, who has popularized it in his best-selling books. you create a bond with your child by wearing your baby in a sling, letting the baby sleep with you, and breast-feeding until the child weans him or herself which could be up to the age of 4 or 5. but what if you simply don't

have time for so much attachment? local moms and a lactation expert weighed in on that issue. >> women are pulled in so many directions today they don't need to be told when to stop breast-feeding. is there a shock factor? well, it depends on which culture you live in. nursing a 3-year-old is not an unusual thing. but that picture kind of misrepresents what breast nooeding a toddler is like. there's more danger in standing on a stool like that than there is breast-feeding a 3-year-old. >> you've got to know your own kid, and i don't think there are many parents out there who don't take into account their own child's needs. >> of course that cover gives parents like me a bad name. so. >> well, child rearing and breast-feeding all emotional issues. quite personal issues. and in the ongoing mommy wars "time" magazine has just started another skirmish. back to you. a pill to prevent hiv is one step closer to federal approval tonight. just a couple of hours ago an fda panel approved truvata for

healthy people at high risk of contracting that disease. right now the drug is being used to treat those already infected with hiv. studies show it to be effective at preventing hiv when it's taken daily. it costs about $900 a month. some fda panelists worry that it may stop people from using condoms and that the pill seems to be more effective in men than in women. a final decision expected by june 15th. police say they found half a million dollars' worth of marijuana growing in the basement of a laurel home. 30-year-old minaj un sichlt a former baltimore police crime scene tech who's facing multiple charges now. officers recovered 341 mature plants in what they call a very sophisticated marijuana growing operation. they say uni also had several books on how to grow marijuana. >> he had high-intensity lights. he had a water-pumping system, a ventilation system. really things we don't see commonly every day making sure that the odor wasn't detected by other people and that he could

grow the plants quickly. >> police say this is just the start of the investigation and now they'll try to search for anyone else who may have been involved in the operation. the best in our community has the best that our community has to offer. that is how prosecutors described a murdered maryland trooper at the sentencing of his killer. a judge today handed down a life sentence to cyril williams. williams shot and killed trooper wesley brown back in june of 2010 while brown worked security at the appleby's restaurant in forestville. prosecutors say brown tossed williams out after he urinated on another customer. williams came back and shot brown in the parking lot. >> you have a partner you cared for, that cared for everyone else, take his last breath in your arms is something you can't tell anybody how you feel about that. it's something you carry with you all the time. something i carry with me every day. >> williams' sentence does not include the possibility of parole. today a judge dropped drunk

driving charges against former federal aviation administration chief randy babbit. dash cameraideo showed babbit driving normally. so the officer had no reasonable suspicion to pull him over. babbit also was below the legal limit for alcohol. even though charges were dropped, babbit says he does not regret stepping down from his post. one of the greatest washington redskins of all time is now suing the nfl over lingering symptoms from concussions. art monk is the lead plaintiff of a new lawsuit that also goes after redell, the helmet company. dan is here now with more on this story. >> i don't think this is going to go away anytime soon. monk is one of 63 former nfl players acting as plaintiffs in this lawsuit, which was filed in los angeles. there are now more than 1,000 former players involved in lawsuits against the nfl. the players are suing the nfl and helmet miker rydell. they claim the league did not

institute policies to help protect players from concussions. the suit says players who suffered head injuries were told by the nfl and its agents not to be concerned and were returned to game action minutes after injuries. the lawsuit cites nfl commissioner roger goodell's public admission in 2007 and the league had been studying the effect of traumatic brain injuries for close to 14 years. but the suit claims it wasn't until june of 2010 the league acknowledged concussions can lead to dementia and memory loss. monk said he suffers from short-term memory loss, headaches, and speech difficulties. he's one of 150 ex-redskins involved in similar lawsuits. the nfl has said any allegation that the league intentionally sought to mislead players is without merit. these seem to be coming out of the woodwork more and more la lately, especially with the suicide of junior seau. this is becoming much more common. >> thanks, dan. >> you're welcome. a permanent tribute to rosa parks is now at the national

all the victims of a chopper crash in the north sea are now safe. 12 passengers and two crew members were on board the helicopter when it went down 25 miles off the coast of aberdeen, scotland. that helicopter was taking workers to an offshore oil rig. no one was seriously injured. tomorrow residents of an apartment complex damaged by a navy jet will begin to move back in. the jet malfunctioned on april 6th and went hurling into the complex in virginia beach. the pilots ejected safely and nobody on the ground was hurt. the navy demolished 27 apartments and removed contaminated soil. 37 apartments that were not damaged were cleaned and have had their utilities restored. a section of the boardwalk collapsed late today in atlantic

city. that incident sent two men to the hospital with minor injuries. it happened in an area not near any of the casinos or resorts. investigators believe rocks supporting the boardwalk gave way and that's what caused it to collapse. president obama's on the west coast tonight attending a fund-raiser at the home of george clooney. the dinner for the president and big-money donors has caused quite a traffic issue in los angeles and is the equivalent of the super bowl for paparazzi. conan nolan joins us live from los angeles. hey, conan. >> reporter: hello. well, they're calling it starmageddon. keep in mind the president in the middle of this fund-raiser right now. and he's going to set a record. never before have they raised $15 million, a candidate raised that much in one event, but that's what apparently is the take tonight. 150 hollywood celebrities. barbra streisand, robert downey jr. you mentioned george clooney's house. and they each spend $40,000 a plate. but most of the money is coming from a ralph tffle the obama can

happening out there right now. a pretty nice night. it is on the cool side. but i'll tell you, a lot of people really enjoying this weather. tonight's a night that you can open up the windows. a lot of people have had the air-conditioning on the last couple of days, and i do think you can turn it off now. 70 degrees the high temperature today. low this morning of 56. it was a cool start but it ended fairly nicely although we had winds that were gusting upwards of 30, even 40 miles an hour today. and today was the coolest day of the month and we still hit 70 degrees. it was below average after all. temperatures right now 59 degrees with winds out of the west at about five miles per hour. 59, not too bad for this time of year. but notice the temperatures in the suburbs. already down to 45 in gaithersburg. 48 manassas. 48 in la plata. and now up to 52 in frederick. we are going to see numbers in the 40s. and even the 30s i think back toward the west. so watch out back here tomorrow morning. you will need the jackets. probably through about 9:00 in the morning. but then you'll be able to take them off as sunshine will really help to warm us up. here are the high temperatures

today. 70 in washington. 64 in gaithersburg. 66 in martinsburg. and 70 in culpepper. that was with plenty of sunshine. sow know we were getting some cool air making its way down from the north and west, and we're going to continue to see that cool air right on in through tomorrow morning. storm 4 radar, nothing to show you right now. we're not going to see any rain anytime soon. that's good news for the weekend. once again, we still are well below average as far as rainfall is concerned. let's at least hold it off until we get through mother's day weekend. and then maybe we can see the rain. right now we're just seeing a few clouds coming through from the north and west and that northwesterly flow will continue to keep things on the cooler side as you wake up tomorrow morning to those cool numbers across the region. that cool air, though, quickly moves out of here and by tomorrow afternoon with plenty of sunshine we're just plain nice. temperatures around 70 to maybe 75 degrees across the region. winds will be breezy tomorrow. today they were windy. tomorrow they'll just be breezy. upwards of 10 to 20 miles an hour. but a nice friday and a great saturday. saturday is going to be beautiful with nice warm

temperatures and abundant sunshine before the clouds try to move in here during the day on sunday, but mother's day is still looking nice on sunday. clear skies tomorrow morning. a chilly start. so yes, get out the jackets. temperatures 38 to about 49 degrees with those winds out of the northwest at five to ten miles an hour. tomorrow afternoon mostly sunny, nice and mild. a little breezy. temperature 72 to about 76 degrees. here's the next couple of days for you. look at this forecast. for the next three days. 74 tomorrow. 79 on saturday. 80 on sunday. happy mother's day. and then as i mentioned the rain, well, it tries to move in after mother's day. thank you, mother nature. 72 on monday. 74 on tuesday. temperatures remain in the 70s right on through the middle part of next week. and we could get some pretty good rain. maybe monday or tuesday into this next storm if it all comes together. right now the storm is bringing some severe weather toward southern parts of texas. i don't anticipate the severe weather coming here. >> if you're going to do some mother's day weekend gardening, the rain will be a good thing for that. >> sports

meanwhile, the redskins organization celebrating its 80th anniversary at redskins park today. the festivities in the team's new multimillion-dollar bubble. man, they've needed this. dozens of former skins greats were on hand for the celebration. the team also unveiled its old throwback uniforms that are going to be worn twice this season. they're a version of the 1937 redskins unis. that's when the team moved to washington from boston. that's brian orakpo on the right and ryan kerrigan on the left modeling the new gear this afternoon. they love them. head coach mike shanahan loves his new quarterback. he's hoping rg3 is the missing ingredient for a team that's been lacking a lot the last few years. >> i think everybody knows in order to have success in this league you have to have everything. you've got to have a great offense, a great defense, special teams. draft, free agency. you can't have a stone unturned. and that's what i think we're trying to get to. you've got to build that foundation. obviously, someone coming in his first year, there is going to be

when her father suddenly showed up at her school. the girl's father's been serving in afghanistan since october. he wasn't expecting to return until this fall. his daughter was so surprised to see him she had trouble talking about the reunion. >> at first i didn't believe it was him, at first. i thought it was someone else. and then i saw my mom behind him and i realized it was him. so i just got up and ran. >> pop's in town for only two weeks, but his daughter says she's going to enjoy every single minute of it. good for them. >> nice welcome home. >> "the tonight show's"
