the day tomorrow. you will need umbrellas for the next 24 hours or so. thane maybe you can put them away. >> thanks. okay. we're talking, we all kind of agree dale hunter has made his bones in the nhl proving everything he needs to prove. time to chill out for a while right? >> yeah. i think he was doing a buddy a favor in george mcphee. >> you really have to want it badly to do that job, that high pressure job. >> he looked at times during the season when he was talking to us in the media like he was in physical pain. i don't know if he enjoyed it. caps players say they were very surprised by dale hunter's decision to step down this quickly but hunter certainly wasn't second guessing his decision today. he informed his friend and caps general manager george mcphee of his decision this morning and a couple of hours later met the washington media for the last time. i must say this is the happiest he's been. hunter took over for the fired bruce beaudreau at the end of november and tried to turn the capitals into a defensive minded hockey team. it wasn't until the playoffs the caps seemed to gel.

they took down the defending stanley cup champs and the boston bruins in the first round and fell to the rangers in seven games in the second. overall, hunter's record in washington, 37-37. and the caps still weren't able to get out of the second round. now his decision since the caps searching for their third head coach in seven months. >> weighing both sides, going home to the family and the family business, you know, outweighed it and i love doing the stanley cup coaching but even if they win a stanley cup next year, i feel like i'm part of it that i'll always be part of it. even before i became coach here i always felt like i was wearing a washington capitals cap around. >> a capital, you know. through and through he is a capital. i thought he was really enjoying his time. i understand his motives for leaving. i would never question that. there's family and that stuff and that is going to trump

anything that we've got going on here. but i was a little surprised. i'm still going to try and convince him to stay. >> it doesn't surprise me and the fact that he would want to be there because of all the work that he's done in that organization and, you know, we'll miss him here but i think he is going to be a capital for as long as he's around. >> braden holtby made a name for himself. brooks likt shook his hand and said is there anything i can do to get you to stay on as head coach? he said no i made up my mind. i'm going home to the farm and my junior hockey team that is incredibly successful. he owns it, he coaches it. his brother is coaching it right now so he'll go back and dive right back in. >> glad he was here for the time he was. it's been fun. >> it would have been interesting to see what he would have done with this group given a full season to work with his philosophy. we won't know. now they're looking for a new head coach. home sweet home for the nationals. they start a two-game set with the padres tonight assuming the

and you can tell why. oh, man. this one is gone. pounces on that fastball. walk off grand slam. the reds come back to win, 9-6. today davy johnson was defending his closer. >> you know, we're making a big issue. i had a question the other day. is he still my closer? yes. he's been very successful at closing. in a job that's not that easy. as far as i'm concerned he has been great. you know, here's a guy that just last year i think he got his first save in the big leagues. and this year he's been outstanding. he has had an outstanding spring. i'm not going to answer these questions every time there is a little blip on the radar screen. is he my closer? yes. >> you've got it. >> i guess we understand. >> he's my closer. next question? >> and at this point it's not a
