where he works. he addressed situation during the board meeting. >> to be clear, i did not order the engagement of the firm and i do not believe there's an actual conflict. my wife is an employee of the firm. not an attorney. she is not received and will not receive any compensation or benefit as a result of the engagement. in this particular case, i know i operated with the best of intentions. but that isn't enough. as the leader of a critically important public body, i must do everything reasonable to eliminate even the slightest appearance of a potential conflict. >> reporter: and the chairman says he will do more from here on out to make sure he avoids any appearance of conflict. i should also mention that they are going to be later in this meeting today, bringing up some possible changes to policies in the way that they do things to make sure this these sorts of expenses don't slip through again. also, mwaa has received a lot of criticism with respect to their management of the silver line

project, with escalating costs involved with that and certainly this audit does not help silence those critics. reporting live from reagan national airport, megan mcgrath, news4. its ceo has called it egregious, now the justice department wants to know if the risky trading that cost jpmorgan chase $2 billion was also illegal. the fbi is launching a criminal investigation into the trading scheme at the nation's largest bank. the s.e.c. and federal reserve are also looking into the matter. meanwhile, jpmorgan chase's ceo is starting to get some heat from shareholders. "the wall street journal" is reporting that two shareholder lawsuits have been filed against the bank accusing jamie dimon of misrepresenting risk to investors. this comes a day after shareholders rejected a proposal to split the jobs of ceo and chairman at the bank's annual shareholders meeting. we're going to take a look outside right now. beautiful out there, sunshine, something we haven't seen on a

dulles toll road. they start around i-270, as you drive about 29 miles per hour. once you past the dulles toll road, the road looks better making your way into virginia. back to you. this morning, five people are in custody after what police with calling a gun incident at two schools in culpepper, virginia. police received a call about someone who had been pointing a gun at ag richardson and pearl sample elementary schools. the gun turned out to be a pellet gun. no students or staff were ever in danger. deputies want it reassure parents that children at both schools are safe. and new from overnight, a home invasion and shooting in southeast d.c. police tell us someone broke into the home over night in the 800 block of southern avenue and shot a man inside the home. the victim was taken to the hospital with gunshot wounds to the leg and stomach. police are still trying to determine a motive for this case. and police are looking for the gunman in another shooting

in southeast washington. investigators say a man was shot in the leg on martin luther king jr. avenue. this happened around 1:30 this morning. the victim was taken to the hospital, we're working to find out his condition at this time. and we now know who will replace former d.c. councilmember, harry thomas junior. democrat kenyan mcduffy won the ward 5 special election with 44% of the vote. barring anything unusual, mcduffy will be sworn in on may 30th, he will serve the remainder of thomas' term which runs through 2014. thomas stepped down after pleading guilty to embezzling hundreds of thousands of dollars of taxpayer money meant for children. coming up on "news4 midday." baby week is back with a look at well-balanced meals. how to save time and eat right for you when you're expecting and your baby, too. a new report detailing the

new today, we have some new information about the injuries george zimmerman may have suffered during the february confrontation with trayvon martin. news4's melissa mollett is live in the studio with us with the latest, good morning. >> good morning, barb remarks the information comes from a medical report that could raise questions about florida's second-degree murder case against zimmerman and perhaps bolster his claim that he only shot martin in self-defense. the medical report was written by george zimmerman's doctor. a source familiar with the report tells nbc news that it shows that zimmerman declined hospitalization the evening of the shooting. when he was brought in for police questioning. but the next day he went to his family physician with a broken nose and two black eyes. his lips were swollen. he had lacerations on his head, and complained of back pain. also in the report, the source says, that zimmerman ignored his doctor's recommendation to see a psychologist after he said he

got nauseous thinking about the shooting. experts believe that could play a pivotal role in the case. >> the fact that real injuries were suffered could help the self-defense claim. but it doesn't answer the question of who started what happened to have been a fatal fight that night. >> reporter: it's part of evidence that prosecutors received from zimmerman's lawyers, witness statements, 911 calls, photos and surveillance video from the 7-eleven where martin had been shopping before the shooting and inside the neighborhood's gates. under questioning from zimmerman's attorney at a bond hearing last month, the state's lead investigator admitted he never asked for zimmerman's records prior to zimmerman being charged with second-degree murder. >> have you ever had your nose fractured or broken? >> no. >> you know that was an injury that mr. zimmerman sustained, correct? >> i i he nos thknow that's an

he purt portedly sustained. >> the state does have the medical records, and now there are reports out of florida that the fbi could be pursuing a hate crime charge against zimmerman. this is important, because zimmerman could be punished by light in prison or the death penalty. if he's found guilty of a federal hate crime involving murder. now a lawyer for trayvon martin's family tells nbc news they'd like to know why martin did not go to the hospital or zimmerman did not go to the hospital the night of the shooting itself. barbara? >> all right, thank you so much melissa for that report. we also have new information in the john edwards campaign corruption trial. the defense appears to be on the verge of resting its case without calling any new witnesses. that means edwards will not take the stand in his own defense. and it appears his lawyers will not call his former mistress, rielle hunter on his daughter, cate, to the stand. edwards is accused of spending nearly $1 million in campaign donations to hide his pregnant mistress as he ran for the white house in 2008. he has pleaded not guilty to six

counts of campaign finance violations. well today, president obama is visiting a d.c. small business to urge congress do act on his economic to do list. the president just arrived at a popular sandwich shop, taylor gourmet on u street. holding a roundtable there with small business owners. the white house says the president will highlight the need for congress to pass a tax incentive. and late he'll meet with leaders from both parties at white house. he's expected to call on white house to pass legislation to eliminate tax insettives for companies that ship jobs overseas. new tax credits for small businesses and companies that develop clean energy. the president will call for a tax credit for businesses that create new jobs or increase wages as well. mitt romney is campaigning in florida this morning. spoke to reporters in st. petersburg a short time ago. he inched even closer to winning the republican presidential nomination yesterday.

in. and we have showers in northern ohio, along a weak front drifting our way later today. between now and then, temperatures will climb. the area in yellow well into the 70s, virginia, maryland, the district. reagan national at 78. it will climb to the 80s by late they are afternoon. as we look at temperatures now, it's in the low to mid 70s, montgomery, arlington, fairfax and prince george's county. mid 70s throughout much of central virginia and the shenandoah valley. going forward over the next 48 hours, the line of showers that may be coming through the area in green, maybe around 7:00, 8:00 this evening. maybe a little thunder or lightning. passing off farther south and by midnight. moving away from the metro area. sunshine back on thursday, a terrific weather pattern developing for the rest of the week and into the weekend. for this afternoon, we'll have a few clouds rolling in maybe producing an isolated thunderstorm. that wouldn't be until late afternoon, maybe after 5:00. before then, into the mid 80s.

marinade for your fish or any of your meats. >> let's go. >> i call it the mommy fast minimum garette. mfast and are the letters to follow. mustard, this is going to be a dijon mustard. you can use any. f is going to be your fat. we're going to save it for the side. add it last. a is going to be an alum. any member in your onion family. a fine chopped shallot. this is three tablespoons right here. s is going to be sweet. honey, fresh fruit preserves, you can use anything. i use a whole cane sugar, unbleached, less processed i think is best. then you'll want to add your tart, your tart is lemon juice, lime juice, any vinegar you have in your house, i have an addle cider vinegar and we're going to mix this until it's relatively mixed and start adding in the fat. now you're going to use about a half, about a half of a cup here of fat.

right now, the metropolitan washington airport's authority says it's going to change how it spends its money. the board, which is overseeing construction of the dulles rail project, met this morning. a day after a report from the department of transportation accused authority members of spending thousands of dollars inappropriately. new this morning, tough questions for tsa officials about security breaches at the nation's airports. a house homeland security subcommittee is holding a hearing today to address a growing number of incidents in recent months. one tsa official told lawmakers that a breakdown in communications remains an issue. in fact, he says the agency has no consistent definition for what a security breach actually

is. metro made changes to this morning's rush after train doors opened during the middle of a ride. the latest incident happened yesterday on the red line. metro says it involved the oldest cars in the system. metro pulled the affected cars from service. news4's tracee wilkins has the story. >> reporter: you can imagine what it felt like for those passengers when the door opened up in the middle of a train ride. metro officials say they don't remember anything like this happening in recent history and they want to find out why it happened yesterday. this picture was tweeted by a rider who witnessed the metro's train's doors opening. wow, the train was moving. it happened yesterday, around 9:00 a.m. on the red line train traveling from venice, udc to tinley town. the good news is no one was hurt. we showed the photo to riders catching the train around the same time this morning. >> this is the door and the

train is moving and it's open. >> kind of dangerous. >> reporter: while the train is in motion, doors wide open. >> usually it's more crowded that that, it's lucky nobody was by the door. >> metro officials are investigating the door opening and say they are reserving comment until they know what caused it. the car that actually opened is a 1,000 model series, the oldest metro car. but the two cars in the front were newer, 5,000 models and the two in the back were newer 6,000 models. since all of the cars work together to communicate. metro officials say there's no telling what caused the problem just yet. erica who rides the train every day around this time says she's been seeing some door issues for some time now. >> i would say in the last week and a half, there have been two trains i've been on, same train here where the doors have jammed and they've had to offload the trains. >> reporter: while metro tests the trains, other red line

unbuckled himself and jumped out of the car when his mother pulled over to the side of the road to give a letter to the mailman. he was hit by an suv. we talked to a witness who saw the accident. >> the driver of the suv got out. he was screaming. she didn't realize her son got out of the car. she never knew he got out. so -- she was still talking to the mailman. and he was saying man, is this your son? >> police do not believe speed, alcohol or drugs were a contributing factor in this crash. richmond's top prosecutor is calling the virginia house of delegates' rejection of a gay nominee for district court judge, a form of bigotry. tracy thorn begland has worked as a prosecutor in richmond for a dozen years. he is openly gay. he was discharged from the navy after coming out during a national tv interview in the ' 90s, delegate bob marshal, a republican for manassas, led the

fight against thorn begland's appointment. over the weekend he said thorn-begland was an aggressive activity for the pro homosexual agenda. marshall said it's thorn-begland's political actions, not the fact that he's gay that makes him unable to judge others fairly. >> he took an oath, he broke it. so we're supposed to believe when he takes an oath here? i just don't think it's appropriate. >> i don't know that a gay judge would do that any differently than a heterosexual judge. i mean where's the empirical evidence, that once a gay person puts on a robe, he or she advances this gay agenda? i don't even know what a gay agenda is. >> the final vote ended with 33 for and 31 against. 50 yes votes were needed. thorn-begland didn't comment after the vote other than thanking the lawmakers who did support his nomination. going to check in with tom kierein for the latest on our forecast. tom, sun continues in. >> it does. morning clouds have begun to clear out and we'll have plenty

dogs at the time. his widow says campbell had a cell phone in one hand and the dogs with the leashes in the other hand and could not have fired a gun. >> he was on the phone with me, he was a husband, a father, a brother, a son, a friend. he didn't deserve to get shot seven times for nothing. >> campbell's sister tells us her brother did carry a gun, but never shot anyone. she says he carried a gun for protection. the catholic archdiocese is firing back at georgetown's university's president. the feud is over graduation speaker, kathleen sebelius. the health and human services secretary played a key role in the new birth control mandate that all employers, including religious ones provide employees with contraception coverage. on monday, the administrator said the archdiocese was upset with sebelius over the birth control controversy. and dejoya said he's missing the

we have an update on the explosion we brought to you, as breaking news a little bit ago. this was the view from culpepper, from excuse me, from chopper 4, not too long ago. fairfax county fire says an air handler malfunctioned at a chemical lab on furnace road, three employees did suffer minor injuries. hazmat was called to the scene for possible chemical exposure,

but the scene is now clear. again, this is breaking news, chopper 4 over the scene, in fairfax county, where there was some sort of malfunction with the furnace there. the white house has put out the latest numbers on the president's finances. the form, which list ranges, rather than exact numbers, show that the president, president obama is worth between $2.6 and $8 million. most of his income last year came from book royalties with his book "dream from my fathers" pulling in as much as $1 million. but he's also saving for his daughters' education, he has four college savings accounts with between $50,000 and $100,000 in them. increasingly, the president has up to $1 million in a high-end jpmorgan checking account. u.s. builders began work on more homes last month. let's check in with cnbc's seema moody with more. >> u.s. markets for the moment

trading higher as today's economic reports yielded better-than-anticipated results on u.s. industrial production and the housing industry. which you just went through. the ongoing issues in greece continue to be a concern for investors. so i would say at this point, traeders are cautiously optimistic in other news we're watching today, the blockbuster drug, plavix used to prevent clotting in heart patients will go off-patent on thursday, making it more affordable for generic option being made available. bristol-myers is the maker and the sales number is expected to decrease drastically after it goes off patent. and facebook's ipo, facebook has filed to increase the size of its ipo by 422 million shares, a 25% jump. this means the deal could raise as much as $18.5 billion.

also taking a look at apple, wondering what the next generation iphone will look like? one thing we do no is apple has ordered larger display screens from its asian suppliers. people familiar with the situation say they measure at least four inches diagonally. compared with the current three and a half inches on the iphone 4s. back to you. >> seema, thank you so much. the birth of a baby can trigger powerful emotions from excitement and joy to fear and anxiety. but it can also result in something you might not expect. and that's depression. in fact, one in eight women will develop postpartum depression after giving birth. dr. skbrosh waugh winer is hee to explain why and how it can be treated. why don't you explain the difference between baby blues and postpartum depression? >> so baby blues is this moodiness, irritability, increased crying that generally starts to occur about three days after giving birth and ends about two weeks after giving

birth. it's self-limited, goes away on its own. >> is it hormonal? >> it's felt to be hormonally related. as is postpartum depression, postpartum is the baby blues that are amplified. so people are really feeling down, questioning themselves. thinking maybe i shouldn't be a mother. maybe i'm not fit for this this will be terrible for my family. they might have thoughts of hurting themselves or their child. they can't sleep even though they're exhausted. when that's going on past two weeks, we think that people have postpartum depression. >> is that also hormonally triggered? >> it's felt it is due in part to hormones, there's a rapid decrease in estrogen and progesterone, it's felt that's the hormonal contribution to developing postpartum depression. but that doesn't tell the whole story. it's also felt to be due to the lack of sleep that people get after giving birth and having a newborn and the stress associated with having a newborn. >> now, a woman who is going through this may not recognize it herself.

what should her husband, her -- >> significant other, partner? >> what should they look for? >> i think they should be looking for the sad mood. if it continues past two weeks. they need to be thinking, maybe there's more to this than just the baby blues. if they're, if their wife or partner is really not sleeping well, they're incredibly irritable, they're crying a lot, they feel completely overwhelmed, they feel like they're not doing a good job as a mother, if they suspect that there's a problem, they need to trust their instincts and recognize there might be a problem in which case, they should talk to their obgy dmmpb or the child's pediatrician or seek out the help of a mental health psychiatrist. >> should the spouse be concerned about the child's welfare in the care of a mother undergoing this postpartum depression? >> in very rare cases some women can go on to have something called postpartum psychosis where they lose touch with reality. that occurs in about 1 in 1,000 women, that's an emergency for the woman and the baby, it's

really rare that postpartum depression will lead to any danger for the child. however, studies do show that kids whose mothers are depressed are delayed in language development, cognitive development and emotional development. and it makes sense. if a mother is depressed, she's going to be less likely to interact and engage with her child. talk to the child less and the child will have some delays as a result. >> any treatments for postpartum depression? >> there are treatments, there are therapies that can take place. so supportive therapies like supportive groups, interpersonal therapy as well. you want to see your doctor because there are some blood tests that can be done, because sometimes women after giving birth have auto-immune problems, one thing that sometimes happens is women will develop a thyroid problem, about 10% of women with postpartum depression actually have low thyroid resulting from the pregnancy. so you want to treat the thyroid problem and there's medications which have been shown to be safe and effective for women

postpartum. >> so is it okay for a woman who is taking an antidepressant to breast-feed? >> that's a real question. there's one medication that's called cirtulen. the brand name is san diego lzo. the levels of the medication don't pass into the breast milk, so it's not dangerous to the baby. other medications do enter the breast milk, so you have to be careful to that. so target the time when you're doing your breast-feeding or pumping to the times when the blood levels of the medication are lower in your moddy or supplement with formula. >> but in general, most women are very happy when the babies come. >> but people do need to be prepared for the fact that it is a difficult time regardless. you're happy, but it's tough. >> it is, i know and you know. >> we all know. >> thank you so much for being here and joining us for baby week, we'll see you next week. good news this morning for expectant mothers worldwide,
