skechers has been ordered to pay up for false advertising. >> baby stores sell products that experts call dangerous. why are they still on store shelves? a new hidden camera investigation. plus actor will smith shows off his moves for some olympic athletes. good afternoon and welcome to news 4 at 4:00. i'm pat lawson muse. >> i'm jim handly. we begin at 4:00 today with music stars helping lift the spirits of those impacted by devastating tornadoes. the local junior/senior high school in the small southern indiana town of henryville was severely damaged. despite all the destruction and change there was one high school tradition those students were not about to give up on -- the prom. when lady antebelem heard about the news they traveled to louisville in the middle of their international tour. >> reporter: this is the gym where the henryville high school prom was supposed to take place but in seconds a powerful tornado changed those plans and prom night seemed lost to the

twister until a group of students decided to ask for help from one of country music's biggest acts, lady antebellum. ♪ the band was already hosting a contest to play at a high school prom, a contest perfect for ravaged henryville high. so they submitted a youtube video asking the band to save their prom and it worked. >> it's kind of a once in a lifetime thing for us. it's going to be really fun. >> reporter: the band says it chose henryville not only because of what they've been through but because of the selflessness of other schools across the country who sent videos on henryville's behalf. >> we love you lady antebellum but we love henryville high school even more. >> we'd go through the videos and just see these other high schools talking about the devastation in henryville. we knew it was bad but to see them move in there was very moving lady antebellum couldn't play on

the actual prom date but is making up for it with a free concert tonight at the nearby louisville arena. >> if we could put smiles on faces and raise money for the relief efforts for rebuilding that city that will be the part we can do. >> a part and night a high school and community will never forget. schools from as far away as northern wisconsin rallied for the students in henryville to win the lady antebellum concert and even students from their rival high schools sent in a video to help. in louisville, news 4. a wildfire in arizona is growing larger by the hour. fire officials now say it is starting to inch toward the historic mining town of crown king. it means several homes and businesses would be threatened there. the town and surrounding areas have been under an evacuation order since sunday when the fire started. the flames fueled by high winds have consumed more than 2,000 acres so far and destroyed at least two homes. here at home it is starting

10:00, and 11:00 p.m. this evening. until then, clouds will be on the increase because there is one more weather front that's yet to come through but it's pretty weak. temperatures will be awfully warm, too, for the evening. 77 even at 9:00. the 72 at 11:00 p.m. so on your fast forecast then a fantastic, comfortable evening for us. could see that isolated shower early tonight. then we're talking about a nice, quiet morning rush. but what about the rest of the week? and of course the ever important weekend. we'll have that coming for you in just a few minutes. >> a medical report is shedding new light today on the extent of injuries that george zimmerman may have suffered during his deadly confrontation with unarmed teenager trayvon martin. it shows zimmerman had a broken nose, swollen lips, two black eyes, and cuts on the back of his head. the report was compiled by zimmerman's family doctor who examined him the day after the february shooting. legal experts say it could bolster zimmerman's claims that the shooting was in

self-defense. he is charged with second-degree murder in the florida case. john edwards' lawyers have rested their case in his corruption trial without putting him on the stand. the former presidential candidate is accused of using nearly a million dollars in campaign money to hide his pregnant mistress rielle hunter. she didn't testify either. neither did edwards' oldest daughter kate. edwards could face 30 years in prison and a $1.5 million fine if convicted. closing arguments will begin tomorrow in north carolina. security breaches at airports took center stage on capitol hill today at a hearing. the acting inspector general charles edwards said not all breaches are reported. he claims it's because there is no clear definition of what's considered a breach. congressman mike rogers said the definition shouldn't matter. >> the fact is a breach is a breach. if somebody gets through a check point, a security excess check point is not supposed to, and it is reported to a supervisor, that ought to be reported up to

tsa. >> tsa says it's working to correct issues in order to make it more efficient. >> the busiest airport in the world has a brand new international terminal. today atlanta's main airport opened its new $1.4 billion addition along with a bright, new look the terminal includes restaurants and expanded view of the arriving and departing flights. airport managers are hoping this new terminal will encourage more airlines to route their overseas flights through atlanta. if congress can't agree on spending cuts and tax hikes the debt ceiling issue could become a crisis once again. today president obama hosted a bipartisan lunch and offered ideas to avoid that but as steve handelsman reports republicans find some of the ideas on the president's to-do list a little hard to swallow. >> reporter: at the white house today the president lunched with congressional leaders to avoid a repeat of last summer's fights that trashed the nation's credit

rating. barack obama vs. john boehner on spending cuts and tax hikes. they failed to make a grand bargain and their short-term deals expire in december. buying hogueies to serve at today's talks, president obama would vow no down to the wire talks this fall. right now he wants tax cuts for small businesses that hire more workers, saying the recovery can't wait. >> one of the ways we can sustain momentum is for congress to take some actions right now even though it's election season, even though there is gridlock and partisanship. >> reporter: a clear election move by the president countered by house speaker boehner, who liked the hogies but not the call for another program that would increase the deficit. >> where is the president's plan to tackle our looming debt crisis? >> reporter: in florida, mitt romney agreed small business needs help but -- >> you don't raise taxes on them like the president's proposing. in fact, you lower the marginal

rate. >> reporter: joe biden fired back. the democrats' plan is to hike taxes on millionaires like romney, who biden charged don't understand the middle class. >> my mother and father dreamed as much as any rich guy dreams. they don't get us. they don't get who we are. >> what republicans call class warfare along with a refocus on the big issues. and a major, long-term deal on spending and taxes, can it get done before the november elections? long-time political observers up here say probably no way. i'm steve handelsman, news 4, capitol hill. by the way, the president had lunch today at taylor gourmet in the district. good publicity for them. the unstoppable betty white is an actress, comedian, singer, and author and the force behind the new hit show "off their rockers." it airs tonight here on nbc 4.

she is also a long time animal lover. this week she brings that passion here to d.c. she'll visit the smithsonian tomorrow where she'll take part in a discussion about wildlife. then on friday she'll get a private tour of the national zoo. betty white is 90 years old now. she says her interest in animals goes way back and says her parents were animal nuts and it rubbed off on her. kim kardashian is keeping up with kanye west. the star arrived at london's heathrow armt today. she crossed the pond to promote her perfume and diet supplements and is expected to meet up with her boyfriend kanye who is on tour in london. season seven of "keeping up with the kardashians" premieres sunday on the e! network and kim did say kanye will be part of that show this season. kardashian was a spokeswoman for skechers and now that company is forced to pay up for false advertising. skechers will fork over $40 million bucks to settle a lawsuit regarding its shape up

because i train in wild card boxing gym in l.a. with freddy roach and, you know, i'm always in the gym and always training and i met a boxer there by the name of latif coyote. he has a big fight coming up on show time and he heard the song and was so inspired he wants me to perform it june 2. i'm going to be doing that and it is going to be extremely just one of the great moments in my career. it is a big championship fight, main event. so it's going to be fun. i'll come out with the dukes up. i feel he is the new face of boxing and i'm the new face of music. >> there you go. >> put it together and see what hams. >> what a voice you have. you were here at oxon hill middle school yesterday talking to the kids. they must have been just thrilled. >> the kids were very energetic and very happy to see me. >> they made me sing as soon as i got there. can you rap?

do a free style. sing. dance. it was good though because i got to actually give back. i'll be doing something else. my father has an auto body shop in clinton, maryland, and the person contacted us as far as taking one lucky girl. she is homeless. she has never been to prom. and we'll provide a limo. my father stretches rolls royces and limos and he'll provide the limo and i'll provide the entertainment and we'll take her to prom in luxury style and have her enjoy her moment. >> great. that is fantastic. you are a role model now. who better? we appreciate it. you represented us so well. the whole region was rooting for you. >> moses stone. >> thank you so much. i'll have so much coming up. i'll be playing sunset music festival august 18 at the key club. >> excellent. >> in between doing the show june 2nd with latif and this show coming up sunset music

take a look. there were so many locations that picked up over an inch of rain. in fact over 2 inches of rain frederick county down around st. mary's and calvert county. hollywood 2.78 inches of rain. thurmont, maryland over 2 inches of rain. andrews airforce base over 2 inches of rain and alexandria, virginia over 1.5 inch of rain in the last 48 hours. we're dry and comfortable today at 80 degrees with a south wind. look at the temperatures throughout the area. 80 to 85 degrees. tomorrow we're going to back off of this warmth just a little bit. it's going to be cooler by 3 to 5 degrees across the area. your good night forecast for 9:00, 10:00, 11:00, isolated shower comes throug then tomorrow morning clearing out and turning breezy by late morning. as far as where the rain is now there is the front, pennsylvania, some showers, isolated thunderstorms north and west of williamport, pennsylvania. do not think that we'll have any

storms at all. as a matter of fact, when this front comes through, between 9:00 and 11:00 p.m., isolated showers, not everybody is getting wet. some sprinkles. probably only a few hundredths of an inch of rain. the front will make its way south and east. tomorrow high pressure builds in and we'll get this. more sunshine across the area and more warmth because still upper 70s not bad. seasonable temperatures. in fact for this time of the year. then friday, too, more sunshine. we'll be nice and warm again as we round out the week with any rain staying well down to the south of us for friday but not entirely for the weekend. so possible showers late. nice and warm. 70 to 76 degrees with the light wind this evening. tomorrow morning it'll be out of the north and picking up 5 to 15 miles per hour. 50 to 59 degrees. still a great start for us. tomorrow sunshine with low humidity, guys. it's going to be absolutely gorgeous between 72 and 77 degrees. a look at your four-day forecast for saturday.

welcome back to news 4 at 4:00. john edwards' lawyers have rested his case. he is accused of using campaign funds to hide his pregnant mistress. neither edwards nor his former mistress took the stand. his daughter kate did not testify either. >> country music trio lady antebellum will perform a benefit concert for students of a tornado ravaged high school today. much of henryville was destroyed in march when tornadoes tore through the region killing 13

people. this is the conclusion of the band's own the night prom contest. schools from around the country submitted entries on henryville's behalf. a medical report claims george zimmerman suffered a broken nose, swollen lips, two black eyes and cuts on the back of his head during his confrontation with trayvon martin. the report was compiled by zimmerman's family doctor who examined him the day after the february attack. legal experts say it could bolster zimmerman's claims that the shooting was in self-defense. the situation in greece led wall street into another trading loss today. the dow closed off 33 points to end the day at 12,598. the nasdaq was off 19 points closing at 2894 and the s&p 500 was off five points closing at 1324. the dow has closed lower in ten of the last 11 trading sessions. we have a consumer alert today for parents about baby products sold in stores that some experts say are causing

infants to die. a new report by the cdc says more babies are suffocating while they're sleeping and they are warning parents to keep cribs empty. think about the fluffy toys, blankets, and bumpers you put in your baby's crib. you can find them easily. just walk into almost any baby store. >> as jeff rossen reports some experts say infants are dying from them because companies are putting profits over safety. >> reporter: we're on a shopping spree. >> looking for bedding for a newborn infant. >> reporter: undercover at some of the most popular baby stores in the country, selling the must haves for any new parent. >> the bumper is nice and soft too. >> reporter: for years doctors have warned soft products like this can be deadly in cribs for kids under 1. babies can pull the pillows and toys over their faces, cutting off air, or roll into a crib bumper and suffocate against the side.

yet the companies continue to make them and stores continue to push them. >> i think the softer ones probably appeal to more people. >> reporter: but soft and cuddly can cost you dearly. this little boy preston was just 7 weeks old when he suffocated in his crib. the official cause of death? the face being wedged between a crib bumper and mattress. >> he was just rocking back and forth with my child -- i sat rocking back and forth with my child who was gone. >> reporter: preston's parents thought the bumper would protect their baby because it was marketed that way, sold in baby stores nationwide, how could it be dangerous? >> i believe that they're profiting off of an unsafe product and they know it. and i don't understand how they can sleep at night knowing the truth. >> reporter: they're now suing the store and the manufacturer.

the cdc says in 2009 alone 665 babies died from accidental suffocation or strangulation while in bed. now the american academy of pediatrics has issued a specific warning about crib bumpers that they can be dangerous and parents should never use them. in chicago, stores are now banned from selling bumpers and in maryland they may follow suit. some doctors say that's just not enough. >> the manufacturers should stop making the bumpers which really have no place in a baby's crib and no place there forever. >> reporter: we went straight to the group representing those companies. doctors say they're dangerous yet the companies continue to make and market them. >> help me understand what your question is. >> reporter: the question is, why? >> why? >> reporter: why make them? why make crib bumpers? >> parents need to make a decision for themselves. what items they would like to use inside their crib. crib bumpers do prevent head

injuries and limb entrapment. >> reporter: you're putting it all on the parents basically. they're not the experts. >> parents are truly the experts of their child. >> reporter: actually doctors and pediatricians are the experts and they are the ones who say these are unsafe. >> i also think parents in concert with their pediatricians and themselves know what's best for their family. >> reporter: experts say it is hard to know what is best for your family when this is the confusing message you get at many stores. >> we typically put in a crib for a newborn. >> reporter: at this target the clerk says she handles the baby section. >> they've given you all the training on cribs and -- >> reporter: but when we asked for a crib bumper, no warning at all. >> so that is good to have a nice, soft thing to keep the baby safe, even the newborns? >> reporter: at babies are us, one clerk actually warns us about bumpers. >> then the whole bumper thing is changed, too. they say you shouldn't use these anymore. >> reporter: but then another clerk chimes in.

well, maybe they are okay for babies. >> after three months or something -- >> is it after three months? >> built-in mechanism when they can't get air they turn. >> reporter: doctors say that is not true. in fact around 3 months old babies are most at risk. >> shopping for a newborn infant. >> reporter: at bye-bye baby the clerks did warn us. >> the babies in the crib, there is nothing supposed to be in the crib. >> reporter: so why is this on display just feet away, crib after crib loaded with what doctors say are dangerous accessories that have no place with a sleeping baby. what is the responsibility of the companies? >> no juvenile product will ever be a substitution for parenting and parents know this and they're smart. >> reporter: but the maxwells say they are smart parents. and that just wasn't enough. >> i want them to just take them off the shelf. don't try making millions of dollars. don't try putting the blame or the responsibility on anyone

other than themselves. >> the stores told nbc they are committed to safety. target says it's developing ways to better train employees. at babies are us in response to the investigation, they've retrained workers. by the way, the government is also investigating to see how dangerous bumpers can be. here's the takeaway. if your baby is younger than a year, doctors say there should be nothing in the crib except the baby. we have a lot more to come on news 4 at 4:00. a puppy is rescued after a hawk drops it from the sky. stand back! >> i got this. i got this. it's a new take on the term "raining cats and dogs." a hawk picked up this puppy from a neighborhood in california and dropped him from 30 feet in the air. a 7-year-old boy was playing in his back yard when he looked down and saw a puppy at his feet. the boy's grandmother saw the drop and called it a mother's day miracle and plans to keep the little guy. the boy named the puppy tj heavenly. >> amazing.

a young woman is in a kansas hospital today after miraculously surviving a small plane crash that killed everyone else onboard. >> reporter: hannah luce is awake and talking to her parents and doctors, but so far has provided few details about the plane crash. the 22-year-old was one of five people onboard a small twin engine cessna that went down in a kansas field and burst into flames on friday. hannah was the sole survivor. >> the heart of a father, i feel more love than ever for hannah, but i feel also the pain of these fathers and mothers that
