and now from washington's leading news station, this is "news4 midday." good morning, everyone, and welcome to "news4 midday," i'm barbara harrison, it's thursday, may 17th, 2012. we begin in fairfax county, police found a man shot in the car. he was taken to the hospital where he later died. news4's megan mcgrath is live in the mount vernon neighborhood where it happened. what can you tell us? >> reporter: well the police have still not released the name of the victim. but we know he's 47 years old and fatally shot while sitting in a car in the parking lot behind me. now investigators are trying to figure out who shot him and why. police go door to door looking

for information. anything that might help them find the gunman. without witnesses, there isn't much to go on. it was 11:30 wednesday night, a resident called 911, to report the sound of a revving car. rakita crenshaw heard it, too. >> a car was going, like somebody was sitting in their car forever and after that you heard silence. >> reporter: when police arrived, they found a 47-year-old man inside a running car. he had been shot multiple times and it appears his foot hit the accelerator. >> the first noise complaint came in was about a sound of a car revving. and that was probably the victim's car. >> reporter: no arrests have been made and police are still trying to figure out the motive behind the murder. residents say it's all very disturbing. >> i'm shocked. i'm just -- out for a morning walk and i see you know, news media and i'm like, what's going on. >> reporter: scary? >> heavens yes, i have a baby.

i have a child here. >> reporter: while police have not released the name, they do say they know the identity of the victim. they're just trying to contact family members at this point. reporting live in mount vernon, megan mcgrath, news4. two people in the hospital after being shot inside their prince william county home around 8:00 last night-a-around weatherburn court in the dumfries area. both victims are expected to make full recoveries. police say the shooting may have been part of an ongoing dispute. they've not released any other details on this case. and maryland will not face a half billion dollars in spending kugts, but thousands of residents will have to pay more in taxes. the house of delegates passed legislation raising income taxes on the top earners. the state's senate passed the bill a day earlier. governor martin o'malley conv e convened the special session when lawmakers failed to reach

an agreement on revenue package during this year's general assembly. he said all marylanders will benefit from the wealthiest residents paying more in taxes. >> i think it is better for everyone that we have quality schools. i think it's better for all of us that our economy creates jobs. and i think it is best for maryland, that we have a highly skilled workforce and we protect public safety. >> maryland's highest tax bracket will be 8.95%. that ties with the district for fourth highest in the country. and taking a look outside now, look at that blue sky. mirror image of what we saw yesterday. a beautiful out there with all the sunshine. storm center 4 meteorologist tom kierein joins us with the first forecast for this thursday. >> just delightful spring weather. all around our region now, temperatures are in the 60s most areas. over the last 12 hours we had a front come through that changed our wind direction to the north-northeast, brought in somewhat cooler weather, a few

high clouds over southeastern virginia now and we may see a few of those into the afternoon hours. right now, all of those areas in yellow in southeastern virginia are now hitting the 70s. through central virginia. richmond is at 72. closer to washington, those areas are in green, generally in the upper 60s in washington and the nearby suburbs, southeast of washington and around the chesapeake bay. the dark green areas are still in the 50s, a cool start there. in fact we're going to have a chilly start tomorrow morning, i'll talk about it coming up. for the rest of the afternoon, enjoy. mostly sunny, mild, just a few of those light breezes out of the northeast around 10 to 20 miles per hour. temperatures climbing into the low to mid 70s. by mid afternoon. look at the chilly weather for tonight. we'll look at changes for the weekend and into next week in just a couple of minutes. we're going to check on the midday traffic now with danella sealock who joins us with the latest. any problems, danella? >> if you're taking the beltway, the outer loop as you make your way past van dorn, we have road

work set up and blocking the right lane, and it's a mess at van dorn street. these cars barely moving on the outer loop of the beltway. i can give you a travel speed if you're heading to the wilgsen bridge in this area from van dorn street to the wilson bridge, about 24 miles per hour, that's looking like a 16-minute drive right now. now over to the beltway in montgomery county, it looks better. no issues to discuss right now. outer loop and inner loop as you make your way past colesville road, nice and clear, no problems. barbara, back to you. thanks, danella. ♪ rock your body from side to side ♪ ♪ and roll it wide and gledlet it glide ♪ >> the godfather of go-go is gone. chuck brown passed away yesterday at the age of 75. he had been suffering from pneumonia. he was a legend in washington where his unique voice helped create the genre of go-go music. a sound that's become the pride of the nation's capital. news4's tracee wilkins is in silver spring with more. >> reporter: chuck brown, the creator of go-go could not have

created and sustained the sound without the help and support of local radio. so of course with the news of his passing, that's where his fans went first. ♪ >> 1 x 77 par show and of course, chuck brown has left us, 75 years on this earth. >> reporter: it's the first morning after the passing of d.c. music legend, chuck brown. >> we're doing a chuck brown story. good morning, i believe that's denise in d.c., how you doing? >> reporter: and when wkys said russ par offered fans a chance it call in and talk to the godfather of go-go. fans called in. >> caller: my heart was broken when i learned he passed. he was just an amazing, amazing man. >> any party with chuck brown, there was so many people there and he walked through the crowd and he would stop and take

pictures of everybody. there's an attachment to the type of person he was. >> this is something that was ours and we're very passionate about it, you know. you could have michael jackson in concert and chuck brown, chuck sells out. >> reporter: brown cultivated the go-go sound in the '70s, stringing together latin, african, r&b and soul music in a per kigs-rich gumbo of sound that was all d.c.'s and its suburbs. >> he had the ability to reach everyone. you can talk to someone in their 40s, the first thing they'll tell you is my dad said he partied with being chuck, you know, and still today, if he was with us today, he would probably have a show tonight. >> reporter: brown's shows were a standard of live performance. he would play for hours nonstop. there were no intermissions, only musical interludes that would often be filled with call and response from the crowd, screaming, wind me up, chuck. a signal for him to keep going. thus the name, go-go. >> he was a genius. you know, he had a gift.

a new york medical examiner is beginning an autopsy today on the estranged wife of robert kennedy junior. mary kennedy was found dead yesterday at her home in westchester county, new york. police suspect suicide. kennedy had struggled with substance abuse for years and had a number of run-ins with the law. she and robert kennedy filed for divorce in 2010. they had four children together. mary kennedy was 52 years old. right now, closing arguments are under way in the john edwards campaign corruption trial. edwards is accused of arranging to use nearly $1 million in campaign donations to hide his mistress during his 2008 presidential campaign. this morning, prosecutors are expected to argue the payments were intended to influence the outcome of the election. defense lawyers are expected to say the payments were gifts intended to keep his cancer-stricken wife from learning about his pregnant mistress. the jury is expected to begin deliberations tomorrow.

doctors in south carolina have confirmed another case of a deadly flesh-eating bacteria. lana kirken dal gave birth to twins two weeks ago in atlanta. she drove back home to south carolina when she noticed a spot on her leg. kirkendal went to the hospital where doctors say she's in critical condition. she's undergone four surgeries so far. the newborn twins are doing okay and her friends are helping raise money for her treatment. and new today, an american astronaut is one of three new crew members who arrived at the international space station this morning. they arrived on a russian soyuz spacecraft. on saturday they'll welcome the arrival of the first privately-owned spacecraft to dock at the station. space x is launching its dragon capsule that will ferry supplies to and from the space station. and storm center 4 meteorologist probably wants to go, tom kierein on the trip. i know you love the space stuff.

>> it amazes me we have people up in space. after all these years, the first manned space program, early 1960s and here we have, still people up there and we see the space station going over, it goes around the earth every 90 minutes. here this morning, we have had a cool start. and with that bright may sun, that's a live view from our city camera. we have temperatures now climbing into the upper 60s in washington. right now reagan national is at 68. with a northeast wind around 10 miles per hour. occasionally gusting to around 15 to 20 miles per hour. around the hometown weather network. the rainfall totals so far, a little bit halfway past this halfway point in may. there's only been about an inch and a half in gaithersburg, leesburg, andrews air force base, about 2.2 inches, fredericksburg, about two inches, we're problem i going to

catch up. we're still abnormally dry through much of the region. as we have the possibility of more rain moving in perhaps next week. right now, 60s around the bay. throughout most of maryland. most of virginia. shenandoah valley, into the mountains, many locations upper 50s. and near 60 degrees there. lots of sunshine. all around the region. but overnight a front came through shifted our wind to the north-northeast. a few high clouds drifting in south of washington, southern maryland. northern neck and eastern shore. most areas to our west,right and clear with a blue sky. that's going to be the story for the rest of the afternoon. maybe just a few high clouds drifting through. breezes out of the northeast around 20 miles per hour from time to time and we'll have temperatures reaching around 70 or so around shenandoah valley. ought to hit mid 70s around washington, maybe a few locations to our south in the upper 70s briefly by mid afternoon. overnight tonight, under a clear sky, it will be a chilly evening, back down near 70 by

sunset, which is at 8:16. by midnight, back down to near 60 degrees under a clear sky. we'll have lighter winds tonight, too. but by dawn tomorrow, it's going to be chilly. many locations will be down into the 40s to perhaps only near 50 degrees. starting off friday morning. and then friday afternoon we should make it back to the mid to upper 70s. lots of sun again tomorrow. then on saturday morning, not quite as cool. mid 50s in the morning, afternoon highs near 80. we should have bright sunshine and on sunday, there's some indication we might get some showers and it's still a little too early to say with much certainty. highs reaching the 70s, greater chance it does look like of some needed rain moving back in and probably on monday and perhaps into tuesday and wednesday, with morning lows near 60. afternoon highs into the mid 70s. big event this weekend, though, is the andrews air force base air show. free admission, free parking, park at fedex field, take the bus to andrews air force base and see the fantastic air show

right now on "news4 midday," fairfax county police are hunting for a suspect in a fatal shooting late last night. officers found a man with multiple gunshot wounds in his car, in the mount vernon area. he later died at the hospital. police have no information on a possible motive for that shooting. washington is remembering music legend, chuck brown, the godfather of go-go, who passed away yesterday after a battle with pneumonia. he was 75 years old. hundreds of his fans celebrated his life last night by dancing and singing outside the howard theater in northwest washington. and new today, you may notice a car with someone miss beeg hind the wheel. google is testing its driverless car in the nation's capital today. news4's erica gonzales is live in northwest washington where

the car just pulled up. well, tell us about it, erica. >> reporter: you know, barbara, i thought i would see flying cars first. but this is pretty cool, too. as a matter of fact, the car is probably one of the most famous and popular things to come out of google's x lab, if you will, the top-secret location that google has where they're concocting all different types of powerful and innovative things like this car. in a few minutes, ward 3 councilmember mary cha, chair of the d.c. transportation committee will take a spin in the driverless car. a toyota prius that fits up to three people at a time. the driverless car system still allows a person to take control by stepping on the brake or turning the wheel. with d.c. having some of the most advanced forms of transportation, chay's office said they were approached by goog toll see if this might also be a possibility for d.c. some time in the future. the driverless car is only

licensed in nevada, the dmv here in the district had to give google, had to give the councilmember special permission in order to make this happen. this is a cool sight. google came out and gave us an explanation as to how all of this works. and long story short, what you're seeing kind of spinning around is generating all different types of electricity. and they've got a gps in the back and they've got some type of motion sensors in the front. so the car still allows you to step behind the wheel if you need to and kind of take it off auto pilot. but you can sit back and let it do all the work. however google does say this is many years from being available to the public. so we're still going to have to wait a while. maybe the jetsons will have their turn first. barbara? >> i don't think i want to be in the passenger seat just yet on that one. thanks, erica. today, leaders from around the world will arrive in our area for the annual g-8 summit.

this year's summit is at camp david. one of the big issues facing this year's meeting is the economic and political problems in europe right now. protesters are planning to gather in frederick, about 20 miles from camp david. police say past g-8 protests in other cities have resulted in riots. so they're taking every precaution to make sure nothing will happen this weekend. police are investigating whether two men in custody are those fake officers that they've been looking for. police arrested them after a wild police chase ended in a violent crash. the men in the black suv crashed into two cars and a limo bus on south dakota avenue near 20th street in northeast d.c. yesterday afternoon. you can see the mangled mess, news4 talked with one of the drivers that was hit. >> i never seen nothing like this a day in my life. this is the worst, horrific accident i've seen. and if you take and look at those, if you haven't filmed them, take a look at these accidents, you know, i have never seen nothing like this and to be involved in them, you

know, it's absurd. >> it all started when a d.c. officer spotted the suv matching the description of the suv used by the fake officers. the suv crashed into a prince george's county police squad car before the chase ended back in the district. police arrested both men in the suv, one of them was taken to the hospital with nonlife-threatening injuries. no one else was hurt. well, we now know the two people's choice winners for the national ideas competition for the washington monument grounds. hundreds of architects took part in the competition. the first winner, the people's forum by carolina, who whose idea settles around a large gathering space at the base of the monument. including an underground visitors center. the second design creates a circular pathway around the monument, at different points, steps rise and fall along the path, causing visitors to experience the monument in different ways at different

points. both entries will be on display at the virginia center for architecture in richmond until june 24th. and let's see what kind of day we're going to have out there, it's beautiful right now. but will it last? let's ask tom kierein, good morning again. >> great day for taking pictures. and this is a photo that was sent in by one of our viewers, katy, amy in virginia, see if can you find the screech owl peeking out of the hole in the tree. the camouflage is so great. you can see the spiky ears, the pointy ears. this is what the male look likes. sort of an orangish tint to the feather there is. not nearly as camouflaged as the female. you can send your interesting nature and flower photos. right now, 68 at reagan national. all of those areas in green, virginia, maryland, that's generally in the mid and upper 60s. the areas in yellow already hit

the 70s throughout central, southern virginia, into the carolinas. farther west and north, the dark green areas, temperatures are in the 50s out in western maryland. some of the highlands in west virginia, it's only around 60 degrees there. as the day progresses, we'll have plenty of sunshine. maybe a few wispy high clouds coming in. later this afternoon as temperatures do reach the low and mid 70s. generally mid 70s around washington, maybe only near 70 areas west and north of the metro area. then overnight under a clear sky, getting chilly by dawn. friday near 50 and during the day tomorrow, upper 70s with lots of sun. sunny saturday, up near 80. some indication of a shower sunday, but a greater chance monday, tuesday, wednesday next week. highs in the 70s each day. barbara? >> thank you, tom. and let's check again on the midday traffic with danella. >> still seeing big delays because we have construction outer loop of the beltway past van dorn street. the left lane is blocked. and if you're traveling on the outer loop, you're jammed at van dorn street.

keeping your chest lifted. you could do this at home without a ball, too, if you wanted to. we'll have sandy sit on the ball. we would recommend doing one or two sets of those, eight to 12 exercises. >> you begin this when you first know you're pregnant and you can do it all the way up the full nine months? >> you absolutely can. and can you do it after you give birth, too, we have kids clubs at all 24 of our clubs, we would hope she would be back there at six weeks. >> she's going to do bicep curls on the stability ball and she's working her arms for cradling the baby. the chest is lifted for easy breathing. and then lastly. we're going to have her stand up and do a static lunge with a row to strengthen her upper back. because we start to have gravity pull us forward. and then she's adding a little tricep to keep her arms nice and strong. >> ingrid should you start that before you start pregnant, start working out before you get pregnant. >> that would be great if

$40 million is how much skechers will pay for making unfounded claims about the benefits of its toning shoes. the shoe company claimed the shape-ups toning shoes helped people lose weight, tone lower body muscles and even combat heart disease. the federal trade commission says this is an important step in getting marketers to insure that they have valid evidence before making health and fitness claims about their products.

consumer who is purchased the shoes will be eligible for refunds. sources close to jpmorgan chase said the bank lost $1 billion more than originally thought from last week's risky trade. u.s. markets quickly erasing morning gains as investors continued to fret about the ongoing concerns in europe. specifically, in greece. the markets have been spooked by reports that the european central bank was pulling support from several greek banks. in response, treasury prices gaining and the dollar has spiked after the philadelphia federal reserve index showed an unexpected contraction in the manufacturing for the region this month. speaking to traders, it seems like the only exciting part about the market right now is face book. the countdown is on to the most anticipated ipo in recent memory. facebook will price shares after the closing bell on wall street with an expected range between $34-$38 a share. "the wall street journal" says for facebook to be the biggest u.s. ipo ever, shares would have to price at $41 or more. that would raise about $19.85 billion. topping visa's offering in 2008, when it raised $19.65 billion.
