and now, from washington's leading news station, this is "news4 midday." good morning, everyone, welcome to "news4 midday," i'm barbara harrison, it's friday, may 18th, 2012. and right now -- facebook is officially a publicly traded company. ceo mark zuckerberg rang the opening nasdaq bell from facebook headquarters in california. the world's largest social network's initial public offering went for $38 a share. that makes it the second largest ipo ever. bringing in $16 billion. as for zuckerberg, he'll be worth $19.1 billion. making him the 29th richest man in the world.

we'll get an update on trading, just as it gets started at 11:00 a.m. from facebook. from cnbc, they're going to tell us what's going on with that stock. and right now, world leaders are on their way to camp david in maryland for the annual g-8 summit. this year's summit is expected to focus heavily on the financial aid political crisis in europe. students in frederick county, maryland have the day off today. camp david is about 20 miles away from frederick, maryland. well despite this weekend's summit being closed to the public there are multiple rallies and protests against the g-8 planned near camp david. news4's tracee wilkins is in thurmont maryland with a look at what police are doing to prepare. >> reporter: we're here on main street, a few miles up from frederick. as you can see here behind me, they are ready for the g-8 summit. they have all the flags from the countries ha that are going to be represented at summit hanging here in the center of town. they're doing everything they can to make sure that folks who

are going to be here know that they are welcome. but they're also preparing for the onslaught of protesters who are expected to come into this small mountain town. officials are expecting the summit to have some benefit for its town. they're expecting the businesses to do well. but they also are preparing for various occupy movements and other demonstrators who have already contacted saying that they're going to be showing up here in thurmont and in frederick as well. so the police departments are planning to beef up their forces. now this started yesterday and will continue through sunday. but they're increasing the number of officers, pulling officers from the state police, maryland's department of natural resources police, even the maryland transportation authority police will be here patrolling. police departments that you don't normally see patrolling. the idea is it's better to be safe than sorry. >> we want to protect the first amendment rights of those coming here to demonstrate against the g-8 summit and we have the

responsibility to protect the citizens of maryland on a regular basis. we think this is a good thing for the count, and on the law enforcement end, we want to make sure that everybody has a safe trip here to frederick county. >> reporter: while folks are used to this kind of thing, but it's their first g-8 summit. because of the closures and kroutsds, some locals have canceled some events for the weekend. when we were coming into thurmont, there was a sign that said the yard sale planned for the center of town won't happen because of all of these events. and an officer was telling me that yesterday there was one protester who showed up early and he was here in town beating his drum. and traffic was backed up. from all of the locals who came to see him do that in the center of town. in thurmont, i'm tracee wilkins. news4. and new today, prince william county firefighters are on the scene of a massive two-alarm fire in manassas.

the fire broke out a couple of hours ago at a tractor dealership in the 7200 block of centreville road. route 28 is closed between compton road and yorkshire lane because of the fire and will be shut for a few hours. there are no reports of injuries from the fire. and turning to the weather, look at that sky up there. some planes getting ready for the air show. we're going to talk about that coming up shortly. let's find out from tom if we're going to have great weather for the air show this weekend. >> already now this is the first day of the andrews air show, this is for school groups and private groups, then open to the public tomorrow and again on sunday. and as we do get into the weekend, some terrific weather cooperating, because they're going to be huge crowds out there. now for this friday morning, we've had just a few high clouds drifting over us. and they continue to move in from the south. there's an area of disturbed weather that's been lingering off the southeast coast of the carolinas over the last couple of days, giving us a few high

clouds. it's going to be creeping closer to us as we get into the end of the weekend. between now and then, some delightful weather, right now, reagan national at 71 degrees. and it is now climbing into the low 70s much of maryland and virginia. those areas in green still in the 60s, including the shenandoah valley, panhandle of west virginia and into pennsylvania. around the bay and the eastern shore, a gorgeous spring day under way with a blue sky and some of the wispy high clouds. and for the rest of the afternoon we'll have lots of sunshine, just a fi of the wispy clouds. it will be mild, temperatures should make it into the mid and maybe upper 70s. we'll have a light wind out of the northeast around 5-15 miles per hour. then overnight, we'll have clear and chilly weather starting off saturday morning. we'll look at the weekend in detail. i'll have your forecast for the big andrews air show and we'll look into next week too in just a couple of minutes, along with photos from the latest school visit. >> see you in a few minutes. police believe speed was a factor in an early-morning crash

that killed a passenger in bowie. they say a speeding car rear-ended another vehicle on 197 near route 50 and sideswiped another vehicle. the passenger in the car was rear-ended and died. the car's driver is in critical condition as well. police are not saying whether the driver who caused the accident will face charges. we're going to check on the traffic now for midday, with danella sealock. >> it's been a tough morning and right now, still going on. let's start with the outer loop of the beltway at new hampshire avenue, an overturned vehicle, i cannot see it on cam remarks but this just happened so please be aware outer loop of the beltway in montgomery county. over to the district, h street northwest is closed at h street because of a water main break. in virginia, centreville road is caused between compton road and because of a car fire and i-95 southbound towards lorton, two

left lanes blocked by a crash there. barbara, back to you. metro riders should expect delays this weekend on the orange line, buses will replace trains between east falls church and west falls church station. that's so crews can work on the silver line extension. on the red line, trains will single track between tacoma and forest glen, as well as van ness and heights. and if you're traveling north of mount vernon square, you need to use the green line. there will be no yellow line service past mount vernon. the work will begin at 10:00 tonight and last through sunday. well you may have noticed a lot of cyclists on your way to work this morning, that's because thousands of d.c. commuters are ditching their cars today as part of bike-to-work day. last year's event brought out about 11,000 cyclists. this year it's expected to be even bigger. organizers say biking to work reduces pollution and is good exercise, too.

well tomorrow you can watch an air show. we were just talking about it. it features planes that flew during world war ii. it's all happening at joint base andrews in prince george's county. and that's where we find news4's megan mcgrath, has the show started out there, megan? >> reporter: their beautiful b-25 mitchell bomber you see behind me. there are all kinds of absolutely amazing planes. that are out here and you can really get an up close and personal look at them. lots of demonstrations, a little while ago we had some sky divers coming down. today is for department of justice and department of defense employees and their families and invited guests. it is open to the public this weekend. now i'm joined by larry kelly, he's the owner and pilot of this beautiful plane that we have behind me. what is it like to fly that? >> it's very nostalgic. it's an easy airplane to fly once you get it into the runway. but the nostalgia, remembering what it was like taking the 18-year-olds, 19-year-olds into

combat day after day at a time when their chance of coming home was less than the chance of winning a coin toss. we're thinking about what it was like for the doolittle raiders, taking off with not enough fuel to make their targets. that's what it's like. >> people with get up close and personal and can really look at it? >> come around, get a lot of good pictures, we get autographs we give to the kids, nice souvenirs, unique war birds out here as well as active-duty military. >> we've got family out here. tell me, you got the little guys, here, what have you seen, what do you think? >> we've seen a lot of demonstrations going on so far. been looking at a lot of the planes, i was coming here as a little girl my father, a retired colonel with the army. i wanted to share it with my family. it was always a great experience growing up, coming here. >> you get to go into all of the planes. >> you get to talk to the servicemen, it's great, they show you around, all the history with everything, it's wonderful. >> you guys have a great time and thanks for joining us.

you're taking a look at the last known video of trayvon martin. it shows the 17-year-old inside a sanford, florida 7-eleven in late february. he bought a drink and a bag of skittles minutes before he was shot and killed by george zimmerman. that video is part of more than

180 pieces of evidence now available to the public. florida's special prosecutor released the documents and photographs yesterday. they include never before seen pictures of the crime scene and of injuries zimmerman sustained during the fight with trayvon martin. attorneys for both sides appeared on the "today show" earlier today and argued over whether the shooting was avoidable in the first place. >> the most important piece, matt, is what the police determine it was completely avoidable, if george zimmerman would have simply stayed in his car. if he wouldn't have profiled trayvon martin and pursued him and confronted him, he wouldn't be in jail, and more importantly, trayvon martin would be living today. >> every life event or experience we can go back to one of the premises had it not happened, had he not been going to the target store, had trayvon martin not been in the neighborhood, had he not gotten out of his car. we have to deal with what did happen and try to explain that away properly and in a

courtroom. >> there's also a toxicology report for martin, which shows he had a small trace of thc in his system, thc is the key compound in marijuana. but prosecutors say his toxicology report is irrelevant to this case. this weekend, the world's richest person will be here in the nation's capital. his visit is causing some controversy. hundreds are expected to protest the george washington university graduation ceremony. the university will award an honorary degree to carlos slim on sunday on the national mall. the 72-year-old has a net worth of nearly $69 billion. critics say the telecommunications tycoon made his money at the expense of the mexican people. say he crippled the mexican economy through his business practices, and kept millions of mexicans in poverty. right now health and human

services secretary kathleen sebelius is ready to address graduates from it will georgetown university's public policy institute. the archdiocese says its an inappropriate choice for the jesuit school. she played a key role in a new birth control rule that mandates all providers provide employees with contraception coverage. a private company is prepared to go on a grocery run to the international space station. space exploration technologies will launch its unmanned cargo ship to the i.s.s. tomorrow. it comes after nasa retired the space shuttle program. the launch is set for tomorrow morning at 4:55 from cape canaveral? will they have sunny skies, will it be clear? >> down there, it's a little stormy and unsettled in some that the unsettled weather will be creeping up closer to us by the end of the weekend. between now and then things should be gorgeous. about as perfect as weather can

get. it's just right in the comfort zone now. not too humid, not too hot. not much wind. we've got a beautiful sky, look at the potomac river reflecting the blue sky, the capitol hill in the distance. a live view from our hd city camera on this friday morning. what a wonderful morning. right now, reagan national is at 71 degrees. the aromas of spring are in the air. a northeast breeze around 5-10 miles per hour. and the pollen count is the only problem, really. tree pollen is high. and it's mostly pine tree pollen now. and also the grass poll sn very high. so if you're suffering from sneezing and wheezing, that's probably the reason. we have the tree and the grass pollen very high. now over the last 12 hours we've had some high clouds passing over us from the south and west heading north and east. but much of the area, lots of sunshine pouring out now. and temperatures under this bright, sunny sky, hitting the upper 60s to around 70 degrees now it should make it into the mid 70s, perhaps upper 70s by

later this afternoon. we'll have a few wispy high clouds coming through. a little bit of a light northeasterly breeze, just an absolutely gorgeous, perfect afternoon. and then overnight tonight, if you plan on heading out this friday evening, we'll have a clear sky, and our temperatures will be getting rather cool. we'll drop from near 70 around sunset time at 8:17, down to near 60 by midnight. winds out of the north and east around 5-10 miles per hour. by dawn on saturday, it looks like we'll have temperatures down perhaps to near the upper 40s starting saturday morning. much of the region. but another day with lots of sun, maybe a few high clouds. temperatures near 80 degrees. then the area of unsettled weather, along the southeast coast, florida, the carolinas now, that may be getting closer to us late on sunday and into monday. maybe bringing in a few sprinkle, it does not look like until sunday night now is the earliest timing it appears now with that. otherwise increasing clouds sunday, into the 70s, monday as we get back to work and school we could have a few passing

showers, maybe some sprinkles. it looks like that may be the story off and on tuesday and wednesday as well. as we get this very weak area of low pressure coming through. it will be a little unsettled. if you're heading to the andrews air force base air show, over to prince george's county we go, there it is, just outside the beltway, andrews air force base hosting this fantastic air show. it is free, free admission, free parking. and this weekend, looking great. saturday probably the best day, near 80 degrees and lots of sun. then 70s to near 80 on sunday. this week i traveled to bethesda's carderock spring school in montgomery county to talk to the first graders about weather. they knew a lot about weather. had a great time, it was lot of fun. they asked a lot of great questions, they loved my weather book i want to thank their teacher for the invitation. montgomery county, great time. >> it looks like a great group. we'll check on the with the midday traffic with danella. >> still, lots of problems to

right now, on "news4 midday," as world leaders prepare for the g-8 summit at camp david, protesters are getting ready as well. demonstrators plan to hold rallies in the town of thurmont, closs to camp david. local police say they don't plan on keeping the protesters silent. but they must keep county residents safe at the same time. president barack obama is announcing a $3 billion food aid

package for africa. the money is coming from private donations. he announced the food security initiative just moments ago. >> we're launching a major new partnership to reduce hunger and lift tens of millions of people from poverty. we'll be joined by leaders from across africa. >> the president says the goal is to achieve sustained agriculture growth and raise 50 million people out of poverty in the next ten years. members of the g-8 summit will talk more about the program tomorrow. right now the jury is deliberating the fate of john edwards after hearing four weeks of testimony and evidence. edwards is charged with using nearly $1 million in campaign money to try to hide his pregnant mistress. jurors are deciding whether to believe former aide andrew young or the defense. young testified that edwards recruited him to solicit secret donations that were more than the legal limit. the defense argued that edwards did not knowingly break the law.

edwards faces up to 30 years in jail and $1.5 million in fines if convicted on the six charges. and later today, a wake will be held for mary kennedy in new york. the estranged wife of robert kennedy junior committed suicide on wednesday. kennedy's funeral is set for tomorrow. she'll be buried in hyannisport, massachusetts where the kennedy family has a compound. president obama is among millions of fans remembering donna summer as the queen of disco. ♪ so let's dance ♪ the last dance ♪ let's dance ♪ the last dance >> summer died yesterday from lung cancer, she had kept her illness quiet. throughout her career, she had 19 number one dance hits and won five grammys. in a statement, the president said her voice was unforgettable and the music industry has lost a legend far too soon. donna summer was 63 years old. want to check in again with tom kierein for the latest on the forecast, tom?

>> just perfect weather. it continues into the weekend today. right now around 70. lots of sun this afternoon. a few high clouds, upper 70s by mid to late afternoon. overnight tonight, for your friday evening fun. down to near 60 by midnight. then the 40s by dawn saturday. tomorrow, a delightful day, lots of sunshine. high clouds, up near 80. on sunday, increasing humidity, increasing clouds move in from the south and east. 50s in the morning, afternoon highs upper 70s. might get some sprinkles or maybe a passing shower sunday evening. then a greater chance monday, tuesday, wednesday as we get into next week. that's the way it looks right now, barbara. >> tom, thank you. mets ro is speaking out after a rash of close calls involving drivers and metro buses. news got an exclusive look at some of the close calls. bus drivers reported getting cut off multiple times each day by cars, trucks and suvs. metro officials say for drivers who take their chances driving

aggressively around buses, it's a matchup they're never going to win. >> normal vehicle, a car, i think weighs you know, 3,000, maybe 4,000 pounds. a bus is closer to 30,000 pounds. it's just that extra weight, the extra momentum that the bus has to go through to stop. >> if a metro bus driver gets into an accident, even if it's not that bus driver's fault, it still goes on their driving record. well metro admits it received warnings about door problems on a red line train before another car's door opened. the "washington examiner" reports metro closed one car after receiving the first complaint early tuesday, but kept the rest of the drain in service. after the second incident, metro officials decided to remove the train from service completely. no one was hurt. metro is trying to figure out how the doors opened while the train was still moving. a check on the mid day traffic again with danella. >> still seeing problems, this time on the inner loop of the

beltway at chainbridge road, we have an accident only the right lane is going to get you by and you're jammed on the inner loop from i-66 towards 123. now, over to d.c., we had water main service scheduled but right now it's postponed until about 3:00. for now, h street is open at 8th street in the northwest. and on the 14th street bridge, you still have the right lane blocked due to bridge work there. and it's not too bad right now. barbara, back to you. >> thank you, danella. babies of mothers who do not get pre-natal care are three times more likely to have low birth weight and five times more likely to die than those born to mothers who do get care. that's why as part of baby week here on "news4 midday," we're reminding viewers that d.c.'s department of health is making pre-natal care easier for moms in the city. the mom van is providing comprehensive services to expectant mothers in wards 5, 6, 7 and 8 who do not have access to pre-natal care.

the first trades were actually supposed to cross at 11:00 a.m., but didn't begin until 11:30. 122 million plus shares traded in the first nine minutes. right now, shares are up about 5%. which is a little bit less than expectations. the social networking sites did price $421 million shares for $38 a share for its initial public offering. the top of the expected range. that makes facebook the third largest u.s. ipo and the largest ever internet ipo, topping even google. facebook's market cap is about 104 billion. only 21 companies in the s&p 500 are bigger than that. ceo and founder, mark zuckerberg rang the nasdaq opening bell remotely from hackers square, facebook headquarters in men lo park, california. he was wearing his signature hoodie. today zuckerberg is worth more than $19 billion. not bad for a guy who turned 28 just four days ago. well positive sentiments
