we'll go live to the social media's headquarters for the company ipo. >> wardrobe controversy. a male student suspended for showing up to school in a dress. >> behind the scenes as mick jagger gets ready to host the season finale of "saturday night live." good afternoon and welcome to news 4 at 4:00. i'm pat lawson muse. >> that picture was trouble. i'm jim handly. firps at 4:00 today millions of people had their eyes on facebook all day today not the latest status update but the price of the ipo stock. >> wall street is about to close any second now. we'll take a look at the live board where you can see the stock is closing just above 38. it started at $38 a share and then jumped to $42 earlier. there was even a snafu on the nasdaq. things got a little bit of a late start today but right now as you can see the closing number there just about $38. joining us live now from outside facebook headquarters in california is cnbc's julia boorstin. did the ipo live up to the hype

today? >> reporter: well, i think there actually is a question of whether the ipo was over hyped. there was a lot of talk that we might see a big pop after the stock started trading today but we didn't really see as much of a pop as a lot of people had been looking for. one of the issues that could have hampered expectations, the excitement here, was the fact that the nasdaq said that facebook shares were going to start trading around 11:00 a am eastern. then they revised that and said 11:05. it was only a half hour after that that the shares actually started trading. there were some technical snafus and in that half hour or so when people were waiting that might have really dampened the excitement. >> interesting. so, julia, what are the experts saying now? should the average person buy this stock now or should we wait a while? what's the conventional wisdom out there? >> well, here's the thing. facebook's valuation is about $104 billion now. whether investors buy this stock

really depends on what their expectations are for facebook's growth. this is a company that did $3.7 in revenue in 2011 $1 in net income. the valuation is really all about the future. future expectations for advertising growth and future expectations for mobile growth in particular. if you're going to buy into this stock you're buying into the future plan for facebook which is perhaps diversification away from advertising and when it comes to advertising to expectation that mobile will be huge. right now there are about 500 million people who access facebook on mobile devices but facebook only started putting ads on mobile in march. this is a relatively new thing and when you look at mobile, users are growing faster than revenue from those users. so that is something that facebook really needs to tackle moving forward. >> a lot of room to grow. julia, thanks so much for bringing us up to date. >> thanks. we're following breaking news out of rockville police investigating a shooting outside

the rockville metro station. metro police tell us two people were shot outside the station just after 3:00 this afternoon. these are aerial pictures right now. a person of interest was questioned a short time later at a nearby shell gas station. we are told rail service has not been impacted by this. we have a crew on the way to the scene and we'll continue to bring updates as new information comes into news 4. a private memorial for donna summer is planned for next wednesday in nashville. only close family and friends will be able to attend according to tmz. summer and her family moved to nashville in 1994. her family reportedly chose the city for the memorial because it was close to her heart and because of the music scene. summer died yesterday in her florida home after battling breast and lung cancer. she was 63. the undisputed queen of disco had 19 number one dance hits and she won five grammys. prosecutors have released a mountain of evidence in the

trayvon martin case raising new questions but not necessarily answer i answering whether george zimmerman killed the unarmed teenager in self-defense. this video shows martin buying skittles and iced tea at a convenience store in florida. minutes later he was dead. according to a report the original lead detective believed zimmerman caused the fatal fight by confronting martin who wasn't doing anything criminal. he wanted zimmerman to be charged with manslaughter. also pictures of zimmerman's injuries and a toxicology report that showed martin had the active ingredient of marijuana in his system. there was also an interview with martin's father who did not think it was his son calling for help in the much publicized 911 call. zimmerman has been charged with second-degree murder and has pleaded not guilty. the jury in the john edwards trial has just gone home for the weekend. they will resume deliberating on monday morning. their vote could land the former presidential candidate behind bars. early this afternoon jurors asked to see several exhibits

and they said they needed office supplies to help with their discussions. edwards is accused of masterminding a plan to use money from wealthy donors to hide his pregnant mistress when he ran for the white house in 2008. his attorneys say he did not knowingly commit any crime. they also say the payments were a gift not a campaign contribution. edwards faces up to 30 years in prison if convicted of all six counts against him. maryland's highest court says the state must recognize a divorce for a valid same sex marriage from another state. the court of appeals ruling today involved two women married in california but denied a divorce in maryland by a judge who said their marriage was not valid in maryland. the state does not currently allow same sex weddings but lawyers for the women told the court it would be unprecedented for the state not to recognize gay marriages performed elsewhere. what a great day to start the weekend. but there are, get ready, some chances for rain in our future. >> meteorologist veronica johnson has the latest on the weather and is outside this

afternoon on the front lawn. >> that's right. out here, folks, it is out standing. that's what our day has been today with lots of sunshine. you'll notice the leaves on the trees. those are swaying back and forth a little bit. a light breeze but very low humidity. 75 i think is the perfect temperature for me. that is exactly the way i like it. and we're at 76 degrees right now but so many neighborhoods this afternoon who have been in the mid 70s. we have a northeast wind at 10 miles per hour. temperatures across the rest of the area take a look at that. 73 up in olney and gaithersburg. 73 degrees sterling. you folks around warranton and manassas at 75 degrees. we have 75 degrees also down around pax river. the only thing you might not like that pollen count with the breeze today it's been blowing the pollen around. we're seeing a step down from yesterday but still high for trees and grass. 172 for trees and 41 grains per cubic meter for grass. it is still pine pollen that remains the highest. forecast for tonight is going to

greece teethers toward a possible eurozone exit that could rock the world's richest nations. >> we look forward to a fruitful discussion with the other g8 leaders about how we can manage a responsible approach to fiscal consolidation that is coupled with a strong growth agenda. >> reporter: global analysts say it is a critical time for the leaders as financial markets worldwide continue to suffer losses. >> it's really crunch time. the situation in greece is rapidly deteriorating. this has huge implications for the global economy and, more specifically, the american economy. >> reporter: president hollands felt it was important to visit the united states in his first overseas trip and look for answers to greece's economic collapse. >> our economies depend upon one another. what happens in europe has an impact on the u.s. and vice versa. >> reporter: the heads of state are meeting near the quaint maryland town of thurmond in what will be the largest

gathering of leaders ever at camp david. the meeting comes just before the nato summit that starts sunday in chicago focusing on afghanistan. already antiglobalization activists and occupy wall street protesters have taken to the streets expressing their displeasure at the world's most powerful leaders. while in chicago, president obama will meet with the president of afghanistan to talk about the future of that war torn country and its own economic issues. on capitol hill, jennifer johnson, news 4. presidential candidate mitt romney is out with his first general election tv ad explaining what would happen on his first day as president. >> what would a romney presidency be like? day one, president romney immediately approves the keystone pipeline creating thousands of jobs that obama blocked. >> the ad will air in virginia, ohio, north carolina, and iowa. >> there is a dress code

controversy under way unfolding at one school in maryland. it centers on a boy who was suspended for wearing girl's close. shomari stone reports from calvert county. >> just angry. >> reporter: high heels, a mini skirt, and a black wig landed warren evans in controversy at calvert high school in southern maryland. the school suspended him for a dress code violation. >> i feel annoyed that they would go out of their way to make it a problem just with me wearing a skirt. >> it's not right. it is not right. >> reporter: parents get in a heated debate about the suspension after school. warren is openly bisexual and says the school discriminated against him. he says boys should be allowed to wear skirts and high heels just like girls. but the school says you're violating the dress code by the way you're dressed. >> i don't think so. >> reporter: why not? >> it didn't say anywhere in the code of conduct in our dress code or anything that says that

welcome back to news 4 at 4:00. i'm pat lawson muse. >> i'm jim handly. here's what's making news at 4:30. a huge day on wall street for facebook's initial public offering. the social media giant debuted its stock today. a snag early in the trading day but it didn't lose its record-breaking $38 per share value. facebook shares closed flat for the day. >> the rest of the markets, however, didn't fare as well with more concerns about greece leaving the eurozone. the dow lost 73 points to close the week at 12,369. the nasdaq lost 34 points and the s&p lost nine. >> this video shows trayvon martin buying candy and iced tea in florida minutes before his death. it's part of the evidence that prosecutors released in connection with the case.

george zimmerman is charged with second-degree murder. he has pleaded not guilty saying he shot the unarmed teenager in self-defense. >> there are several protests under way here and across the country today as world leaders gather at camp david for the start of the weekend g8 economic summit. this was the scene in downtown frederick located just a few miles from the presidential retreat. protesters expressed their displeasure at the world's most powerful leaders. we'll have more in a live report coming up on news 4 at 5:00. hard to believe but betty white is 90 years old and has a hit show on nbc. betty white's "off their rockers." >> today she visited the national zoo to watch the animals. last night she was at the lizner auditorium and sat down with nbc 4's wendy rieger. >> reporter: the audience couldn't contain its love for one of hollywood's most enduring and endearing creatures, the glorious betty white. it was such a thrill to see this sassy and classy woman in our town.

washington by the way is one of her favorite cities. >> i accuse people of sweeping the streets themselves and washing everything down. it's just -- it just sparkles. i think it's the most beautiful city in the world. >> reporter: she revealed that she arrived in washington this afternoon from new york on amtrak. >> i haven't been on a train in maybe 40 years. it was beautiful. >> reporter: i thought you would be on like a private jet, you know, with chippendale stewards. >> i don't think so. that's some other betty. >> reporter: on friday she heads to the national zoo for a private visit. she is a strong advocate of zoos believing many animals would be extinct if not for the breeding pro-fwrams that rgrams that res species. she also says if she could ask people to do one thing for animals it would be this. >> practice kindness and spread the word of kindness. always take the animal's point of view as well as your own.

and appreciate them. just don't take them for granted. we're losing them far too fast. >> betty white was as gracious as you could expect, patiently signing autographs for the media and posing for pictures. and the saucy wit that has made the 90-year-old so refreshingly real is clearly not an act. do you ever have time to date? >> that's none of your business. >> then she decided to clam up. who doesn't love betty white? she has a new book "betty and friends my life at the zoo." >> i assume that answer means yes. >> i guess it does. >> mind your business. >> don't ask anymore. a bunch of hollywood heavyweights are in france this week attending the cannes film festival. >> but something is missing this year. there was a star-studded celebration last night honoring women in film. stars from diane kruger to alec baldwin attended. ironically this year's festival does not feature any female directors in the major

competitions. many of the a-listers said it's important that women be represented on both sides of the camera. >> women have a different point of view, a different cause, different reasons and we want to be heard, yet i think hopefully they will encourage women to just say i'm going to make a movie and it shouldn't matter if you're a man or woman. >> the season finale of "snl" is going to have all the moves. >> it's going to be huge. tomorrow night mick jagger pulls double duty as both host and musical guest on "snl." jagger has performed on snl many times through the decades and has also made cameo appearances and sketches like the memorable jimmy fallon who played jagger. remember that with the mirror on either side of it? the rolling stones front man says it's taken years for the show creator lauren michaels to convince him to host. >> so i've always said to lauren

we're ready for some answers. we have the questions. does sunscreen lose its strength over time? what is the difference between memorial day and labor day and we have a question about sunless tanning lotions. it's almost memorial day weekend and we have sun safety questions in today's ask liz. >> sort of a tanning memorial day sort of compendium for you today. >> good. i like that word. a sunny day to start us off. first up from jerry in oxon hill jerry has old bottles of sunscreen from last year. and he wants to know, does it lose its strength over time? >> the american academy of derick tollology helped us with this answer. it says the u.s. food and drug administration requires that all sunscreens stay at their original strength for at least

three years. that means sunscreen that you bought last year should still protect you this year. however, if you aren't sure when you purchased your old sunscreen, it is best to toss it out and buy a new bottle. some sunscreens do have expiration dates on the bottle so simply check for that. that is a good new thing they're doing. >> that is good. next question from sylvia in the district. she wants to know if there are any harmful health effects from using sunless tanning lotions. >> everybody likes to look like they have color without going in the sun. we contacted lombardi cancer institute at georgetown university for this question. it says the only harmful effects of sunless tanning lotions is that some people are allergic to them. some people also complain about skin stains caused by the lotions. you should also know that sunless tanning lotion does not protect you against sunburn. remember, many doctors recommend wearing sunscreen whenever you're outside and they suggest applying that sunscreen liberally 20 minutes before you go out and cover all that exposed skin. don't forget the tops of your ears, backs of your legs, and

as rehoboth will have a windy time this weekend. by monday the rain will be coming into the area a 40% to 50% chance of rain around the area for monday, tuesday, even wednesday it might be pretty wet. but the water temperature 64 degrees and the temperatures will drop with that cloud cover on monday, too. tomorrow morning 45. 55 in d.c. 56 degrees in fredericksburg, a bit of a cool start for us. right? 80 degrees though the high temperature. so we're back up above average with our high temperature by the afternoon. the weekend stays dry but clouds come in for sunday. so the prettiest day out of the weekend is sunday. kind of an ugly time of it for monday and tuesday but down across areas of the deep south this weekend will be ugly too with a lot of rain and the rain heads right on northward and sticks with us through mid week and probably even thursday with a chance of some showers. maybe even some thunderstorms. your highs next week in the mid to upper 70s but this weekend parked right around 80 degrees. so not too shabby, guys.

for the weekend you got plans? >> we do now. coming through for us. the air show sounds great. >> my goodness, it is. of course it was a beautiful day today. that's where i was right there at andrews joint air base there. school kids were out today. there were a lot of other special guests. the air force families, air service families were out. media was out. the air show of course was open to the public. it is saturday. it's sunday. you've got the blue angels, the golden knights. by the way, i waited all day for that interview with the blue angels. they never gave it to me. >> oh, no. >> i know. then you got some other stunt performers too. the commander of the base told me there's plenty to do even when you're not looking up. >> the weather is going to be fantastic. we've got the finest aircraft. >> you have to listen really hard to hear what he's saying. i guess that's what it is. listen, the air show is free. the first show is at 8:00 a.m. tomorrow.

take a good look. a woman walked into this lumber store in upstate new york. it happened tuesday as you can see from the security camera she is wearing her birthday suit. police say she made another stop at a nearby store. no word on why the woman was shopping without clothes. maybe she was looking for a dress shop. she was charged with public lewdness. >> all righty then. check out this surveillance video at a gas station. this father-to-be's wife was inside this truck about to give birth when it became clear the florida couple wasn't going to make it to the hospital they pulled over at the gas station and delivered this. they dialed 911 but the baby wasn't waiting. he delivered little baby colton right there. the fire truck showed up in time to cut the umbilical cord and make sure everything was all right. >> a baby.

a revelation in the case of a missing child from arizona. child welfare authorities confirm that last year they visited the home where 6-year-old isabelle chelis was last seen four weeks ago today. nbc's miguel almaguer reports that detectives say they are making progress in the case. >> reporter: at the request of authorities, isabel's father has stayed away from his wife and two boys for the last week. investigators now confirm child protective services first visited the home back in december though a law enforcement source tells nbc news the incident was minor and did not involve isabel. >> we are equally investigating

conference just wrapped up. >> reporter: well, at that news conference we learned there are two victims. a 16-year-old boy who is the most seriously injured but his injuries are described as nonlife threatening. and an 18-year-old young woman. i'm told by a witness that the bullet literally cut across her skirt as it grazed her leg. she is -- her injuries are also nonlife threatening. it was a chaotic scene here. 2:30 in the afternoon the station was filled with riders including students from richard montgomery high school and rockville high school. we're told the suspect was taken into custody at a gas station a few blocks away and we were told at this press conference by major tim marsh of rockville city police that at that time a gun was recovered. >> the shooter and the primary victim are known to one another. in is not a stranger based event. investigation and the joint response to this
