able to stop a number of people and were able to develop some look out information regarding the shooter. i can't tell you, although it is in the early stages of this investigation, that the shooter has been taken into custody. >> now what police have told us is they believe the shooter was with another young man. they are referring to that person as a person of interest. they haven't given us his age or any type of description. this investigation is still very active. reporting live in rockville, jackie bensen, news 4. alcohol and speed. both factors in a deadly crash this morning in bowie. >> police say a 21-year-old woman was killed after she was rear ended while sitting at a red light. pat collins has our report. >> this red car was at a standstill when it happened. slammed hard and fast by this gold car in an early morning accident that had deadly consequences.

the victim, 21-year-old anastasia smith a koss mey toll gist who recently graduated from the evita school downtown. here she is posing with her winning hair style. she lived in bowie where her friends and family gathered today to mourn her loss. >> it's devastating. she was the life of everyone. any time she wald in the room everybody did nothing but laugh, joke around. >> family, friends, whoever knew her you could be somebody on the street and just run into her and you'd be devastated, too. >> reporter: this happened around 2:30 this morning near the intersection of 197 and route 50. anastasia smith and a girlfriend had been at tgi friday's to get something to eat. they were on their way home. the friend was driving the red car. anastasia was in the front passenger seat. police say the red car was stopped at this line waiting for

that light. it was then it was struck from behind by the gold car. struck with such force that it was knocked into the intersection. the red accident lines tell the story from here. that red chevy knocked over the median strip and then into the path of oncoming traffic. the driver of the gold car, the striking car, identified as a 27-year-old man from bowie. >> we know it was a very high rate of speed striking that vehicle from the rear. >> reporter: it was alcohol involved? >> alcohol, speed were factors in the accident. >> reporter: police say charges are pending in this case. in prince george's county, pat collins, news 4. a possible break today in a string of brazen armed robberies in prince george's county. police have arrested three men for holding up a mcdonald's in

capital heights. investigators believe the same men are linked to five other robberies at gas stations and convenience stores last weekend. >> as you know the media played a key part in this by putting information out. we got a lot of community tips which led us to these individuals. >> right now the suspects are only charged in the may 12 robbery of that mcdonald's. if convicted in just one of the cases they face up to 20 years in prison. world leaders are gathering at camp david for the weekend's group 8 summit. they started arriving this afternoon. among the topics? the financial crisis in greece. iran's nuclear threat, and the continuing war in afghanistan. there were several demonstrations nearby and demonstrations across the nation. people speaking out against the g8 meeting and the nato meeting. sunday in chicago. jane watrel joins us live in frederick where there was extra police presence today. jane? >> reporter: so far here in frederick there has been more

media types and police officers than there have been protesters but that is expected to change. a heavy police presence in downtown frederick from horses to bike patrols. this is the largest city closest camp david and businesses are closing early and boarding up. even putting chicken wire in their windows ahead of the g8 summit. >> i did not want to stock a lot of plywood in the back of the store. and we use poultry wire for a lot of our work. it was a really good, natural response. >> reporter: a small group of demonstrators are here to protest the camp david gathering taking place 20 miles away. their numbers are expected to grow. but frederick's police chief says he is not expecting any problem. >> we do have a lot of people working. they're working extended hours. so we have a lot of officers out. we want people to feel safe and secure. >> some businesses are even having a little fun with the leaders of the free world

gathering nearby. by creating tongue in cheek t-shirts. >> just to smmake a small statement. the haves and the have nots. that's it. read into them what you want. it's just a little levity on the situation. >> reporter: other businesses aren't taking any chances. at least two downtown banks have hired security guards to stand watch outside. locals think that's over kill. >> i don't see anything happening. i missed it. >> reporter: frederick authorities have been in the planning stages for two months working with federal, state, and other local municipalities to handle the international spotlight. >> we're treating this as a snowstorm. you know, predicting the worst and praying for the best. >> reporter: tomorrow demonstrators plan to hold a ten-hour gathering in a local park, an event they say for radicals and residents alike. live in frederick, jane watrel, news 4.

jury deliberations are done for the day in the john edwards corruption trial. jurors are considering six criminal counts against the former presidential candidate. they have to decide whether edwards knowingly used campaign money to hide his pregnant mistress. today jurors asked to see several trial exhibits to help with their deliberations. edwards faces up to 30 years in prison if convicted. prosecutors have released a mountain of evidence in the trayvon martin case. it includes this surveillance video showing martin buying candy and iced tea just minutes before he was killed. george zimmerman is charged with second-degree murder. he claims he shot in self-defense. police took these pictures of his injuries. martin's mother says you can hear her son screaming for help and neighbors' 911 calls. but according to a police report this week, martin's father initially said it was not his son's voice. zimmerman's family says he was the one calling for help. >> that is absolutely,

positively george zimmerman. >> the toxicology report says the active ingredient in marijuana was in martin's blood stream. his family says that should not distract from the murder case. a heckler is hauled away after interrupting the commencement speaker at georgetown university. >> having spent my entire life in public service -- [ heckler shouting ] >> kathleen sebelius the secretary of health and human services briefly heckled by an anti-abortion protester. police escorted the man off campus and released him. georgetown is a jesuit school and the archdiocese of washington has criticized the university for inviting sebelius. the church is upset about the obama administration requirement that all health insurance cover birth control. one woman was arrested at george mason's graduation today. police say she was upset because some people were not being allowed inside. the patriots center was filled to capacity. it seats 10,000 people.

la plata. 73 pax river. what are we seeing? notice all of the rain just off the coast of north carolina. we're going to be watching that system very closely. it's an area of low pressure and a little bit of a trough right off the coast. it could impact part of the weekend. we'll talk much more about that coming up in just a couple minutes and yes i have to come inside to do it. >> get back in here. thank you, doug. maryland's highest court says the state has to recognize the divorce for a valid same sex marriage from another state. the court of appeals ruling today involved two women married in california but denied a divorce in maryland by a judge who said their marriage was not valid in the state. maryland does not currently allow same sex marriage but lawyers for the women said it would be unprecedented for the state not to recognize gay marriages performed elsewhere. next at 5:00, dramatic video from inside a metro bus. metro buses. we'll hear from veteran driver about the close calls that he has encountered on a daily

protesters angry about a proposed rate hike by pepco gathered once again outside the company headquarters but this time a shareholder meeting was going on inside. earlier this week they threw cake at the building to protest. today the protesters wanted the company to pay what they called a fair tax share, withdraw the $42 million fare hike and draw back executive pay. many were delivering the messages to pepco management inside. earlier this week again -- there is the cake they were throwing at the building to protest the same issues. a wildfire in northern colorado has grown to 12 square miles. rising temperatures today could make things worse. that fire is about 5% contained. 15 homes are threatened right now. and today the governor of arizona declared a disaster emergency so that extra dollars can be freed up to help fight this. a large wildfire is also burning

74 in charlottesville. 73 in fredericksburg. these number is a little cooler than the ones to the west. petersburg at 78 because of a little bit of the easterly wind. we'll see that northeastly component over the next couple days that will keep us a little bit below where we may get. if we saw southwest winds tomorrow we'd be upwards of 85 to 86. tomorrow a nice 80-degree with sunshine. storm 4 radar nothing to show you here. we arl dry but just down to the south there is a complex system right now off the coast. this is providing a lot of rain to areas of eastern portions of north carolina just off the coast here. we'll be watching this very closely. nice and warm for us. plenty of sunshine tomorrow. here's that northeast component of the wind. but it will really pick up during the day on sunday as that area of low pressure moves back to the coast. best chance of rain on sunday will be to the south of washington and i think sunday will be dry for just about all of us during the day. so that's very good news there. monday, however, a little bit of a different story. that area of low pressure making its way right up the coast.

it will be very windy at the beaches this weekend. if you're thinking about going maybe ocean city or rehoboth expect 20 to 30-mile-per-hour winds and cooler numbers too. high temperatures only in the low 60s during the afternoon. we'll see an east wind. it will be cooler and wet on monday. but not an all day rain. we just expect to see some shower activity during the day. a few high clouds. a geat evening. enjoy it. i left out the "r". you know what i'm talking about. 64 to 70 degrees as you make your way out and about. tonight a great night to get out for the battle of the beltways. the orioles against the nationals tonight out there at the ballpark. it is going to be a beautiful one down at nats park. temperatures will be around 73 degrees for that time period. a very, very nice night to get out and about there tonight. in the next couple days, it looked just like this. 80 on saturday. 79 on sunday. there is the chance of showers coming up monday and into tuesday. but no real heavy rain out there. enjoy the weekend while you can. >> sounds geat.

>> it does. >> just going to be geat. >> thank you, doug. well, another negative day for stocks overall but of course all eyes were on facebook shares today as the social media giant, their stock made its debut on the nasdaq. julia boorstin joins us live from cnbc's california headquarters. first off, tell us about this snafu that delayed the sales of facebook. what happened there? >> first i have to say i'm not at cnbc headquarters but facebook headquarters in menlo park, california. and mark zuckerberg rang the opening bell for the nasdaq from inside here from behind me at 9:30 a.m. the stock was scheduled to start trading at 11:00 a am eastern and didn't start trading until 11:30. what was the snafu? it seems there were some technical difficulties in part because the nasdaq was overwhelmed by trade orders. there was just so much volume activity that the nasdaq couldn't keep up. that really delayed things. that may have dampered interest

in the stock and may be one reason why the stock closed the day just a tiny bit above where it started about $38 a share. >> it did end pretty flat but there were reports that facebook's underwriters had to step in to keep the stock from sinking. anything to that? >> there were reports of that. i mean, one thing we have to keep in mind is when you have an offering of this size and we were talking about a $104 billion market cap raising over $18 billion for the company. when you have an offering of this size it is hard for an opening day ipo to move that dramatically. but it seems like that $38 mark was the floor for the stock today. >> so what's the consensus? should the average investor jump in and buy facebook stock now? >> well, it'll be interesting to see what happens when facebook reports its next quarterly results. whether or not investors want to buy in on facebook depends on their outlook on facebook's growth prospects. last year facebook did $3.7

billion in revenue and a billion dollars in net income. but the company is trading at a very high multiple because there is a lot of expectation of big growth. we'll have to see facebook come through with significant growth particularly for its mobile business. you're going to see more ads on your mobile phones where facebook has to show it has significant growth down the line. maybe it'll create new business models. maybe retail on facebook. but the company's trading and investment prospects are all about future growth. >> so much room to grow. it is everywhere. cnbc's julia boorstin, thanks so much. well, paging alfred hitchcock. birds ve invaded a local neighborhood creating new problems for a community all too familiar with this problem. >> they've been married for almost 20 years but did the first family consider calling it quits? the allegations inside a new, unauthorized bioon the president. tonight at 6:00 d.c. police have released new video that may help find a killer after a hi should be arrested for crimes against potted plant-kind.

well, in sports from four home runs in one game to an umpire. in case you misted what a week for the texas rangers outfielder josh hamilton. he had a boatload of fun during his visit to baltimore that included more than just sliding on the tarp in a rain delay. hamilton hit four home runs in one game against the os and wound up with nine homers for the week. but alas, all good things must come to an end. that happened on sunday night against the angels. hamilton stroked his single to left field. turned out the bat he had used to hit eight of those nine home runs for the week broke on the swing. manager ron washington seemed to be broken up about it. hamilton said, quote, she died a hero. that bat now headed to the hall of fame in cooperstown. it's also been a wild week for

blue jays infielder bret lowry against the twins. chris parmley hits a popup that he goes back for. bounces off his glove and into the hands of left fielder eric thames. he makes the juggling catch. a lucky bounce for lowry that time. but his next bounce would not be so lucky. tuesday night in toronto against the rays lowry thinks this is ball four. but umpire bill miller says strike two as lowry started running to first base. so he steps back in. the next pitch not as close as the first one. but as lowry starts toward first, miller says, you're out of there. lowry can't believe it. he throws his helmet and it bounces up and hits the ump. lowry suspended four games for the incident and blue jays fans let the ump know they didn't like the call either. throwing a beer on him as he left the field. sometimes it's better to be lucky than good. for tim clark at the players championship, it was better to be both lucky and good.

showing the near accidents. >> hi, windy and jim. this is the time of day when things start getting hectic. it's rush hour. a lot of people are anxious to get home. metro bus drivers say some of the drivers try to get in their way. that makes it difficult for them to get around. metro buses having to pull some fast moves. the drivers repeatedly get cut off by other drivers. >> i can encounter that all day every day. >> lester saucer has been behind the wheel of d.c.'s public transportation vehicles for 27 years. he says he has seen more than his fair share of daring drivers who hit the gas forcing him to slam on the brakes. >> well, i wouldn't say slam on brakes. i would say we apply the brakes and if we put too much pressure on the brakes then it activates the camera. >> reporter: each bus has a camera mounted on the front windshield and any time a driver

will end up better than your car. reporting live in freedom plaza richard jordan news 4. >> metro was warned about door problems on a red line train before a scary mishap earlier this week. the washington examiner reports officials closed off one car after getting a complaint about the doors flying open tuesday morning. but they kept the rest of the train in service. then it happened again during the morning rush hour. metro has now removed that entire train from service and today they began tests to figure out what went wrong. >> right now investigators are trying to figure out what sparked a massive fire at a tractor dealership in manassas. chopper 4 captured video the aftermath as fire broke out around 9:00 this morning in the 7200 block of centreville road. two people suffered minor injuries. a man shot to death inside a car in mount vernon has now been identified. the victim is 47-year-old morgan monroe jr. of landover. police tell us he was shot multiple times on wednesday night and his foot was still on the accelerator when police

arrived. someone heard the revving motor and alerted authorities. no word yet on a motive or a suspect. fast forward through the headlines. two people shot outside the rockville metro station this afternoon. police say the victim is a 16-year-old male who knew the suspect. another female was grazed by a bullet. a suspect was taken into custody at a nearby gas station. train service is not affected. >> police say a speeding driver slammed into the back of this car in bowie this morning killing a woman. the victim is 21 years old. anna stacia smith. police say alcohol also contributed to the accident. charges against the driver are pending. several protests here today and across the country as world leaders gather at camp david for the start of the weekend's g8 summit. the group protested in downtown frederick a few miles from the presidential retreat many holding signs expressing displeasure with world leaders. a kraft beer promotion using an image of former washington

mayor marion barry is coming to an abrupt end. lawyers for council member barry say the flying dog brewery had no permission to use barry's photograph in a commercial way. the flyer also jokingly referred to barry's 1990 drug arrest saying, quote, crack one open, d.c. flying dog is promoting a new underdog beer sold starting tomorrow at the jack rose bar and restaurant in adams morgan. thousands of area commuters took to their bikes for the annual national bike to work day. this event promotes cycling as a regular way of life any day of the week. tom sherwood reports. >> reporter: some promoted their commutes on youtube. many others stopped at cycling pit stops for games and prizes. officially signing up for bike day that drew cyclists from all around the metro area. and some like julie patterson of capitol hill had important appointments to make. >> i was diagnosed a couple months ago with kidneys cancer.

three months ago i had my kidney removed. i'm three months cancer free. i was having a doctor's appointment this morning. and i decided down here at gw to ride my bike from capitol hill where i lived. >> reporter: organizers say over all nearly 12,000 cyclists officially signed up, far more than recent years. the director got in on the day with his adult trike. ward 6 councilman tommy wells who regularly bikes to council says bikes are no longer alternative transportation but main stream. >> none of the stereotypes people think they have about biking really aren't true anymore. we've got a lot of folks that view it as a way to stay healthy. a way to get around. and we're a city that really was becoming more biking for everyone. >> in the district, tom sherwood, news 4. up next it's a foul problem. this local neighborhood dealing with a bird invasion. it's not the first time they've made the news.

beyond. or this weekend it's going to be so sunny. >> or even just this afternoon. our first question comes from kathy in gaithersburg. we all know the sunscreen is important to wear especially in the summer but how much should we be using? >> none of us use enough. the american academy of dermatology gave us help finding this answer. it says most people only apply 25% to 50% of the recommended amount of sunscreen so to make sure you're putting on enough, use at least one ounce of lotion. one ounce is considered the amount needed to cover the exposed areas of the body properly. if you need a visual reference. that's about a shot glass full of sunscreen. imagine that. a full shot glass. put it on the dry skin. 15 minutes before going outdoors reapply the sunscreen after about two hours in the sun or after activities like swimming or running. a shot glass. >> i didn't know, i always thought it was 30 minutes. put it on 15 minutes ahead. >> at least that. >> it's kind of like, no. >> the next question from debby in falls church. she wants to know what is important to keep in mind when

choosing your sunscreen. >> the american academy of determine nollology gave us this answer. it says the best type of sunscreen is the one you're going to use over and over again. you should also make sure it has broad spectrum protection. that means protection against both uva and uvb rays. be sure to get a sunscreen with an spf of 30 or greater. get one that is water resistant so it is less likely to come off when you swim or sweat. but broad spectrum means burning rays and cancer rays. >> good chltd good. >> our last question comes from ann in fairfax. she wants to know if expensive polarized uv sun block sunglasses are better for your eyes than the sunglasses you buy for a couple bucks in the discount store. >> does it really matter? we went to the american optometric association to get the answer. it says expensive sunglasses can really be worth the money. uv coating absorbs rays which prevents damage to the cornea and lens of your eye. next polarized lenses block reflective light and glare from entering the eye and then the

birds are taking over a neighborhood in southeast washington and the residents say

the flock is destroying the sidewalks and creating a health hazard. news 4's derrick ward has more on the dirty situation. >> reporter: a typical picturesque block on the eastern edge of capitol hill along potomac avenue. neat row houses and yards and fences but residents say they are beset upon daily by a menace that comes not from the ground but from above shall specifically from the trees. a menace with wings and an active digestive system. it's birds. not this bird but these birds seen in this video shot by a resident. the plastic owls were actually put there to scare the real birds off but maybe they just scared something out of them instead. >> they just poop all over the place. >> it's been raining lately so the sidewalks aren't as bad as they usually are. it starts to smell when it gets warmer. >> reporter: while the numbers are fewer in daylight they come home to roost at dusk and if the little mementos are any indication there are quite a few. >> i don't know much about birds but they're small, look like

starlings or some kind of small little grayish-black bird. >> now we even see crows. >> reporter: on this day city crews were cleaning the streets but not the sidewalks and certainly won't be washing cars. there are lights here. residents tell us the plan is to shine them into the upper bowels of the trees to scare the birds off but that method hasn't been deployed yet. >> you come out and just like bang on a card board box and it scares them away long enough. >> reporter: there are also concerns about all the bird waste under foot. ultimately tracking some of it home with you. >> it's real bad. it's a health hazard you know? >> reporter: but residents say they do see some relief late in the summer. >> like i was reading up on it. the percussians of the fireworks chase them away. by the time the city comes around they're almost always gone. they never get to see it. >> you might say people around here are becoming bird experts. >> yeah. you know, a car wash expert, too. >> reporter: we spoke to the folks at the department of the environment and dpw and they say they are aware of the situation

rockville right now coming in at 78 degrees. going to be a great night no matter what you're doing but this is what we're talking about. nothing to show you here. just down to the south. this is an area of low pressure and a trough. you can see showers all along the trough right off the coast. that is going to make its way up the coast and eventually back into our region. i think saturday will be fine and sunday will be dry for just about everybody. if you are heading down toward the beaches, however, watch out there also along the chesapeake and maybe parts of the northern neck could see some showers late sunday but don't cancel any plans. i think most of us will be on the dry side. both days this weekend. now let's talk about the battle of the beltways taking place right here in washington over at nats park. we're talking about the orioles making their way down from baltimore. that long trip. i don't know if those guys ran here or took a bike or what. first pitch 7:05 tonight. 73 degrees. nice and mild tonight. it will be cooler at the end of the game but still a very nice night for baseball. the number one orioles right now

almost 20 years but were the obamas ever close to divorce? >> it's one of the stories that is trending today. it is a new unauthorized emphasis unauthorized biography of the president. it claims the first lady planned to divorce him after just eight years of marriage. that comes from edward klein's new book called "the amateur." barack obama in the white house. >> klein says the couple had trouble in 2000 when mrs. obama advised him against running for a congressional seat that he lost. the white house denies the claims and says the author has a proven history of reckless fabrication. >> the video has gone viral but the aquarium worker at the center of it all says it is not his best work. get a load of this. >> yeah. fred boyce is his name trying to capture an alligator with his bare hands along the north carolina highway. oh, boy. that's tough to watch. this morning on the "today" show he told matt lauer his plan was to cover the gator's eyes with a towel and grab its mouth. how well does that work? that didn't work out this time.

one of the latest victims in an alarming and rare case of flesh eating bacteria may need more am pew tastes. 24-year-old georgia student amy copeland developed the condition earlier this month after cutting her leg in a river. doctors already had to amputate one of her legs. now in a posting on facebook her father says amy may need her hands and her remaining foot amputated as well. despite the pain he says amy is staying brave and told her family let's do this. there is a dress code controversy unfolding at one maryland school. >> it centers on a boy who was

wearing girls clothing. >> i'm just angry. >> reporter: high heels, a mini skirt, a black wig landed warren evans in controversy at calvert high school in southern maryland. the school suspended him for a dress code violation. >> i feel annoyed that they would go out of their way to make it a problem just with me wearing a skirt. >> it's not right. it is not right. >> reporter: parents get in a heated debate about the suspension after school. warren is openly bisexual and says the school discriminated against him. he says boys should be allowed to wear skirts and high heels just like girls. but the school says you are violating the dress code by the way you're dressed. >> i don't think so. >> reporter: why not? >> it didn't say anywhere in the code of conduct and our dress code or anything that said boys can't dress like girls. >> reporter: the district's dress code policy states schools can regulate dress or hair lengths. students told me girls wear skirts the same length as warren and nothing happens.

broke out at the front of the station. >> we heard pop, pop, pop about four or five shots and i knew it was gunshots and there was a young kid about 14 behind me. i grabbed him and we ran over behind the booth where the metro workers were. we hid behind there. there were a couple more shots and then somebody yelled it was okay. we went out and the boy was bleeding. there was blood everywhere. it was awful. >> reporter: a 16-year-old young man was struck several times. he was taken to the hospital by ambulance with serious injuries. an 18-year-old woman coming home from work was grazed in the leg as the stray bullet tore across her skirt. the city of rockville, montgomery county, and metro transit police officers fanned out in an intense search for the suspect. he was arrested eight minutes after the shooting at a gas station a few blocks away. police say he is a teenager. >> the shooter and the primary victim are known to one
