saturday, may 19th. we want to go to florida where technical difficulties stopped us from seeing space history. a private company called space-x was counting down to launch an unmanned rocket but stopped seconds before liftoff app cape canaveral. led it to scrub the launch. the next launch would be tuesday morning at earliest. when and if it does happen, will dock with the space station and deliver supplies to the crew members there. joining us to talk more about this mission is space expert dan billow. >> he's a reporter and meteorologist with our sister station. thanks for joining us. can you explain exactly what happened that prevented this launch? >> reporter: well, it was just a half second to go. in fact, this rocket 16 stories tall which has nine engines -- all nine of the engines were turned on and firing.
9:01 am
the only thing that kept the rocket from leaving the launch pad were some bolts. then one of the engines, engine five experienced high pressure. the computer sensing that cut everything off just barely in time. if the rocket had lifted off with an engine problem, potentially it might not have gotten all the way to orbit. it could have exploded. >> we want to ask you. nasa started looking towards the private sector to take over flights to orbit post the shuttle era. what does it say with the confidence level with the goal in mind to have american astronauts, to have them back in space within the next three to four years. what does this tell us about that effort? >> reporter: some day, you're right, maybe as early as 20 is a, astronauts can be aboard that rocket vessel. there's only a one second opportunity window to get off

the target. so when they cut off the engine, that was the only chance of getting there today. they'll have to wait for another day, probably tuesday. when off one second window which will be the case every time, it's not a big deal to not hit it. it's probably going to take a few times -- a few tries. and really it's not much of a problem. they'll fix it and they'll try again. >> and dan, as you said. maybe the next attempt will be on tuesday. what's going or happening there at the cape between now and then to see if this could be a successful liftoff on tuesday or some time in the near future? >> reporter: well, that will be a real study in president obama's theory that private industry can do it better than the government. what space-x, the rocket builder is talking about doing here is replacing an engine on the rocket and having that rocket ready to go again in a few days.
9:03 am
at the cape that is unheard of. they can't do that. the government has never been able to replace an engine that fast. can private industry do it? we will see. >> dan billow giving us important info there. thanks for spending some of your morning with us. >> and everyone's going to be watching again on tuesday to see what happens over the next few days. it would be exciting to see it take off. that's the goal there. >> everyone's rooting for it. and even down on city hall there they had a sign that said go space-x. and usually it has a sign up there saying go "endeavor" or "discovery." >> it's an important step in how space travel goes. there's other things in the sky going on. we've got the air show at andrews air force base. we have a solar eclipse later
