providing cash and destroying evidence of wrongdoing in that scandal. tom sherwood has more. >> reporter: thomas gore handled money for the gray campaign. what he did can it got him in trouble. thomas w. gore walked out of federal court tuesday after pleading guilty to felony destruction of evidence and other charges. the first guilty plea in the gray campaign scan dell investigation. a longtime friend and campaign treasurer for the new candidate gray in 2010, gore admitted in court he used undisclosed gray campaign funds to finance $660 in blank hone orders to secretly reward a minor candidate who was attacking then mayor fenty. gore admitted to felony lie to go cover up the payments. gore declined to talk to reporters, but his lawyer was asked if gray himself was in any way involved. >> is there any indication that

your client has given that mayor gray should have known what was happening? >> i don't have any comment about that. nothing in the statement of offense mentions anything participation by mayor gray in anything. >> i believe that the government will charge additional people. >> reporter: gore said in open court he is cooperating with the ongoing federal investigation. the federal judge delayed send continuing indefinitely while the criminal probe continues. >> to what extent is gore cooperating? >> he's answering questions and whatever they ask him. >> the mayor's lawyer declined comment. he told news 4 the investigation is still going on. and it certainly is. people think this is the tip of the iceberg. >> do we expect to go on for a long time? anyway of estimates the time frame? >> the u.s. attorney has said that he has agents working night and day and weekends to get this done. >> thanks. there is concern about more

flooding tonight in prince william county, virginia. the area got hit hard last night leaving many roads flooded early this morning. drivers were trapped in rising waters. one guy needed a rescue team to help get him to safety. storm 4 chief meteorologist begins our storm team coverage. doug. and we're talking about the rain because we saw some areas pick up three to five inches of rain over a ferry short amount of time and that did leave flash flooding there. right it now across our region, if you're heading out this evening, most areas are looking very, very good right now. just about everybody on the dry side around the metro area. southern maryland back toward the west, but notice out to the west in through west virginia and now approaching into parts of virginia, just to the west of winchester around hampshire county, we have a thunderstorm, and a big thunderstorm right now around charlottesville. these are all trying to encroach from the west and from the south. they'll try to get into our area throughout the rest of the evening hours. but i really think tomorrow we could really be in for another whopper just like we saw last night. this was the radar last night

from 8:00 until 2:00 in the morning. and just take a look. i'll put my finger right over manassas and you can see here six hours of continuous rainfall. storm after storm moving over the same area. and that is why we did see those three to five inch rainfall totals. here we are and i'll show you the video out of that dangerous flooding. many of those roads continue to be closed today and we'll see the potential to who are during the day tomorrow. there's everyone the possibility of a dam break down there at least overflowing the dam. we'll go live to jane withatrel with more. >> reporter: the intensity of those multiple storms you talked about, six hours of straight rain, surprised many long time residents here in western prince william county. who a woke this morning to find over a dozen roads either washed out or under water. this was the scene on roads and

bridges throughout prince william county after a night of heavy rains. creeks turned in to rivers. a torrent of water forcing road closures and drivers to turn away. >> what kind intensity does it take to -- >> takes a lot of water. very intense. we had several other spots crews working on right now. >> i think we got about four inches of rain. it just poured cats and dogs. pray we don't float away. >> reporter: that's exactly what happened to this head strong driver who ignored the rising waters. a few minutes later, kelly was stranded. and had to be rescued. cameras capturing it all. an embarrassing way to start the day. >> i thought the water would be up to the fender level, but as soon as i got down in there, just kind of floated away. >> reporter: workers took this

picture of a sinkhole that opened up. spending the we abetter part of morning filling it in. western prince william county saw three to five inches of rain in just a few hours. >> on our gauge, it was about four inches last night and four inches this morning. so almost eight inches in less than 24 hours. >> reporter: officially we were told three to five inches did fall overnight and roads are beginning to open. in fact most of them are. this road is still under construction here on valley view drive near the valley view community park in prince will yes, ma'am county. but it looks like the road crews should be done in the next hour or so. and this road will be open to traffic. reporting live in prince william county, i'm jane watrel, news 4. a man once suspected in the death of a friend in aruba is now facing charges in animal list. gary giordano was arrested last

friday. police found he and a woman having sex in an suv. they both face charges of indecent exposure. a parking attendant saw what was happening and called the cops. >> we had a customer come by and complain that they saw something going on that shouldn't be going on in their car and i went up and checked it out and, you know, it did appear that there was something not supposed to be going on. so that was kind of unsxukted and different. very creepy. so i matt cade the call to the . >> last august he was in aruba with a woman named robyn gardner. she disappeared and is presumed dead. she was a suspect and detained for four months. he denied involvement and was released after a panel of judges ruled there wasn't enough evidence. a mother shot in front of her children has now died. tonight the father of those children is a murder suspect. d.c. police are looking for a man familied ray there. or cook.

he also go by the name tone, hancock, and brown. police say he killed yolanda stone back in february, she was shot and died this weekend. police are now offering a $25,000 reward for cook's arrest. there is an arrest tonight in the murder of a local up and coming rap artist. it's case that was unsolved for several months. pat collins with more. >> reporter: why was rapper frankly amobe murdered? they say he was selling crack cocaine and his killer wanted those drugs. ♪ frank wherein amobi, on stage, he was known as frank diggy. a noted rapper growing in popularity. franklin will amobi, murdered outside his white oak apartment december 27th, the last man murdered in montgomery county in the year 2011.

now some closure. charged in the murder, 29-year-old dennis macabi, according to court documents, amobi was selling crack cocaine to mac a bi when he was killed in it a robbery. the break in this case came from what you might call the back door. according to the documents, a confidential inform apt in virginia came forward and said he had information about the amobi homicide. that led detectives to an eyewitness to the shooting. that's witness identified the trigger man and identify macabe as the man negotiating a drug deal with amobi right before he was shot. and killed. >> this case from the beginning has presented some hurdles and challenges. investigators are happy that they have some information now and some people coming forward giving us information. enough information to charge.

>> reporter: so what about that trigger man? sources say police know who he is. they say he's in jail on another a matter. and it that the detectives are sorting through the evidence and hope to soon charge him in this case of murder. live in montgomery county, pat collins, news 4. now to the latest in the presidential race. a new nbc news/"wall street journal" poll shows the president obama's newly declared support for gay marriage will probably not make a difference in his re-election chances. 62% of the people polled say the president's decision will not make a difference in their vote. 20% say they are now more likely to vote for mitt romney. one pollster called the issue a voting draw. that nbc news poll and two other sr. says release dad show the presidential race is very close and republican candidate mitt romney is moving up. the polls indicate the economy remains the main concern, but they also suggest a growing number of americans believe romney understands their problems as well as the

rescue mission over the falls in canada near quebec city. a you power failure shut down a moving gondola. the group was stranded about 200 feet up in the air. most of the tour group consisted of students and their parents. there was a 2-year-old who was the first one rescued. everybody did get down safely. a teen age who are almost went over a 265-foot water fall is talking about his dramatic rescue. >> my son was down by the water and he slipped. >> that's william hickman's dad calling 911 for help. his son spent eight hours saturday stranded on rocks with freezing cold water rushing by. the rescue effort took hours and was extremely dangerous for everyone involved. >> i was scared they were going to have to chop off my toe, like hypothermia or something. >> went for a very short ride before i was able to climb up on

the bank of the river and my backup line held. >> rescue workers eventually used a ladder to help. that gave him a platform to put supplies on and to anchor themselves to. william was very cold and wet, but was not seriously hurt during the whole ordeal. one year ago todays, one of the deadliest tornados in american history hit joplin, missouri. 161 people were killed. more than 900 others were injured and about 700 homes were destroyed. the city has since been struggling to recover both physically and emotionally. jina kim reports. >> reporter: thousands marched in a walk unity. >> scary quup li uplifting. makes your heart melt. >> reporter: the morning began with lanterns it filling the sky as those who live through lath year's tornado recalled how it changed it their lives.

>> when the storm hit, i was on the ground floor. i was struck by something, most likely a cinder block from the wall next to me. >> reporter: 18-year-old was one of nearly 1,000 who were hurt on this day last year when an event f-5 category tornado ripped through joplin and duquesne, but it they were the lucky ones. in just 30 minutes, the mile wide tornado had killed more than 150 people, damaged or destroyed some 10,000 homes and buildings. >> we turned on our weather radio and heard that st. john's had been hit. and the announcer's voice had the fear in it that we knew it was really bad. >> reporter: today the scars are still everywhere, but new homes keep springing up on this anniversary day, the city broke

ground on three new schools. and the spirit of job lynn is stronger than ever. the highlight among the anniversary events is a walk of unity. thousands of people are taking a four mile walk through the parts of the city that were most affected by the tornado. in joplin, missouri, jina kim, news 4. a couple who live in tornado alley got married against a one of a kind backdrop. caleb and kendra recently tied the night in harper, kansas. after walking down the aisle, their wedding photographer captured and amazing shot. the picture shows two tornadoes in the background. those systems were about eight miles away and did not pose any threat to the wedding party. the photographer says she doesn't expect to capture anything like that ever again. >> i don't know if i would have been it too sure that didn't pose any danger. i'd have been going to the sell

as we widen out, this is what we're seeing severe weather. down to the south, each one these little yellow boxes is a severe thunderstorm warning and notice the amount of coverage of the thunderstorms. tomorrow i think this whole thing whether wrap right on into our area and do i expect to see a good number of storms here. and is expect to see a good number of heavy down pours around the area, including the metro area. showers today, rain down to the south tomorrow, that rain will shift up to the north. so i do expect to see some areas picking up very heavy down pours. maybe one to three inches if some of those storms do develop during the day tomorrow. then on thursday, the boundary shifts a little bit farther to the east and the area of low pressure to the north. so the most rain will be in pennsylvania, but question still have a chance for shower activity during the day on thursday. once again any of those showers could produce locally heavy rainfall. this evening partly cloudy, warm, and a bit humid with showers possible, mostly to the south and west. some thunderstorms, too. temperatures 69 to about 73 degrees. tomorrow morning, mostly cloudy, areas of fog, and some areas

billions of dollars to bail out the economy, but some question whether the stimulus act completed the job. news 4 i team with a look at what happened to the money in our area. >> when the federal government started dishing out $830 billion, the goal was simple. save and create jobs while stimulating the economy with shovel ready projects. three years later, nbc and the nonprofit watch dog partnered up to see where the money went. shovel ready. stimulus projects ready to start the moment the money arrived. >> this is happy creek. >> reporter: for years the town had plans ready to go for the happy creek trail. all it needed was $50,000. two months after the money arrived -- >> this is what's new. >> reporter: front royal had it

trail. >> yes, there were jobs created with this project. >> reporter: happy trail is one of nearly 7,000 stimulus from jekts in maryland, d.c. and virginia. that's more than $19 billion in taxpayer dollars. some was used to fix up a stage. the city of laurel bought segues. even the white house used stimulus money to inspect its electrical system. but the news 4 i team found only half of the projects in it our area have been completed. some haven't even started. the town manager says he had a serious problem. the state and feds ordered the town to build a new waste water treatment plan. >> we produced a lot of algae blooms. it depletes the oxygen.

black men. he faces life in prison. tonight we're hearing of a dangerous ordeal. yesterday a bus caught fire in the 3rd street tunnel. it quickly filled with smoke. >> drivers were going all directions or trying to and one car, a baby locked inside. darcy spencer has the story. >> how nasty was it? >> it was pretty nasty. the smoke was heavy. >> reporter: the scene was chaotic. a bus on fire inside the 3rd street tunnel during the monday morning commute. these two u.s. capitol police officers were near the tunnel when the call went out for it an explosion. they raced into help. >> i remember look at a d.c. fire truck finally getting through and pulling up to the scene and all of a sudden it disappeared and the smoke, you couldn't see the flashing lights of the fire truck, it was before before the smoke was so thick. >> did you have any protect it

difference gear? >> no, nothing. >> reporter: initially motorists were being turned around in the tunnel so they could drive out. >> some drivers 20rds the back of the tunnel actually abandoned their vehicles and took their keys with them and so we couldn't get anymore cars out past them. >> reporter: that's when they decided to evacuate. >> going vehicle to vehicle getting people out, bringing them to the side of the tunnel, putting their hand on the wall and telling them to walk straight so will they could guide themselves out. >> reporter: the officers estimate that they probably helped some 40 people out of the tunnel. and according to the fire department, it was only the officers taken to the hospital, no other injuries were reported. in a panic, one driver locked her car with the keys and her baby inside. >> busted out the driver's side window, opened the vehicle and got the child out. >> reporter: after getting everyone out, these two and another u.s. capital police officer were taken to the hospital for smoke inhalation. >> it's part of the job, i guess. like i said, i really didn't

think about it, i just did it. >> reporter: darcy spencer, news 4. two people killed and n. separate accidents along icht 95 in brins william county today. one person was killed in a three car crash in the northbound lanes near dale city. that happened just before 8:00 this morning. a second accident happened in the southbound lanes about 4:30 this morning. police say a van lost control and flipped over a guardrail. a passenger in that van was killed. the driver of the van has been charged with reckless driving. virginia's department of transportation is facing a lawsuit over alleged displays of racial intimidation. keith smith it got a job with vdot through a temp agency. soon after he started, he says he saw nooses hanging behind the desks p two of his supervisors. smith claims it happened in two

separate occasions. he says he also got an indirect threat and that is when he quit. >> a urge before wild things were going through my head, you know. and i just basically concluded just let the job go. >> the agency told our sister station in roanoke vdot received a complaint from a contract employee alleging workplace harassment based on race. the civil rights division investigated the complaint and the vdot employees involved were disciplined. tax and alcohol violations forced several night clubs to shut down tonight. state officials say today's criminal indictments could help make many neighborhoods safer. chris gore did not reports. >> reporter: the owners of seven night clubs have been indicted for tax, alcohol and licensing violations. >> the closing has had really beneficial impacts in our communities as many of them were encouraging violence and crime

and really wreaking havoc on many of our neighborhoods. >> reporter: the charges include failure to pay sales tax on food, drinks and admission. also the sale of alcoholic benches without a license and possession of untaxed alcoholic beverages. >> we've identified $700,000 in tax -- >> reporter: between june and october of last year and the alleged illegal activities that they observed have been documented and resulted in today's indictments. the seven night clubs named include puzzles event center, dela swan, let's chat, kroes roads, plaza 23, black amethyst, and cfe club. most have been closed down. but cross roads operating a restaurant and carryout as well as a club says it's still open.
