welcome to "news4 at 4:00." i'm pat lawson muse. >> i'm jim handly. new warnings out today as we expect big changes in the weather. the national park service wants people to know about the hidden dangers along the potomac river after close calls. we have the story now from megan mcgrath. >> reporter: the potomac river is a national treasure. while a source of great fun, the potomac can also be a source of great danger. betsy train has seen it firsthand. her husband nearly drowned last year in a canoeing accident. >> they actually capsized at seneca. they were in the water for about 2 1/2, 3 hours. they had life jackets. and they scrambled for what they could. >> reporter: in 2009, ten people drowned between the key bridge and the waters just north of great falls. an area known as the potomac river gorge. to prevent accidents, emergency responders want to urge visitors

to be careful, especially on wet rocks which can become extremely slippery. >> algae growing on the rocks and make it very, very slippery. these rocks have been here for thousands and thousands of years eroded by the potomac river. the area is smooth. when they get wet, smooth surface can be slippery. there's sand. sand gets on it they act like ball bearings or tiny balls and make you slip as well. >> reporter: swim sing not allowed in the potomac river gorge. remember, while seemingly still on the surface, down below the current is very strong and can sweep you under in a flash. boaters have your life vests. it is not only smart, it is the law. park rangers have also seen a new and rather dangerous trend in the last year or so. what they call young thrill seekers. jumping from the rocks. there have been a number of injuries, including broken legs and concussions. along the potomac river, megan mcgrath, news4. heading into the big holiday weekend, we are in for some

dramatic changes in our weather. >> meteorologist veronica johnson has details from the storm center. >> the last couple of days we have been talking about the slow moving storms. attention important the upcoming weekend, holiday weekend, memorial day, will be on heat and humidity. you will want to make sure you hydrate. red write to pull the fans out and get them red xwrip looking at clouds across the area right now. like yesterday, we have more storms popping. 83 degrees currently with the south wind at 15 miles per hour. and as you look at the satellite and radar, take a look where the clearing is. just east of front royal right now. it is right around the rim of that clearing that we are seeing the storms pop. they are popping and like yesterday they are slow moving. yesterday's storms, you can see there, i labeled it there for you in loudoun county, prince william county, fauquier, produce ad lot of rain. round hill, over 3 inches of rain. catlett, four inches. bull run, over five inches of rain. slow moving storms today. biggest batch down to our south.

this cluster will be making its way north and northeastward towards stafford county. mt. pleasant, spotsylvania, chancellor, heavy rain and lightning in a very short period of time. watch out for light mink in those areas. yesterday we had some flash flooding around the area. could see that again today. we are in the 80s but again, turning up the heat and humidity. take a look at your 7-day forecast coming up in a few. decades old mystery may soon be solved. police in new york are questioning a man who says he kidnapped and killed a young boy more than 30 years ago. 6-year-old etan patz vanished 33 years ago on his way to school in new york city. he may look familiar to you. he was one of the first missing children featured on a milk carton. new jersey police picked up pedro hernandez late last night in connection with the child's disappearance. hernandez lived and worked in the neighborhood around the at the time patz disappeared. right now, a second former aide to d.c. mayor vincent gray

is in court in connection with a federal probe of gray's 2010 campaign for mayor. howard brooks is accused of lying to the fbi about payments made to suleman brown. another mayoral candidate. another gray stafford pleaded guilty to charges related to the investigation earlier this week. tom sherwood will have the latest on the hearing on "news4 at 5:00." mayor barry says he's sorry about comments he made about fill pane owe nurses in the last few months. barry apologized during a joint news conference in southeast d.c. asian american advocacy groups stood with barry as he addressed the media. >> i apologize efor any hurt or harm i did to anyone. apologies are not enough if you are going to continue to do it.

and so i -- raise myself in leading this community, highest standard in everybody, and that would be very, very careful about my words and about any group of people. >> barry came under intense scrutiny in april after he said the district had to do something about, quote, asians coming in and opening up businesses in dirty shops. later in april, barry also made controversial remarks about the number of filipino nurses in area hospitals. today barry said he hopes to make ward 8 a model of diversity and inclusiveness. new polls in three pivotal presidential battleground states suggest president obama is holding a slim lead against his presumed challenger, mitt romney. that's good news for the president. but romney also has a reason is on celebrate. his numbers are going up. steve handelsman has the latest. >> reporter: mitt romney is stronger in three key states.

tonight's fire which investigators believed may have started when a pcp drug lab exploded. eight firefighters from the engine 10 fire station suffered from diz aniness, itchy eyes and other health problems. they were transporteded from their firehouse to be evaluated. if you take your lunch to work, check this out. new study suggests keeping your lunch in the office fridge could make you sick. researchers at kimberly clark swabbed nearly 5,000 surfaces in several office buildings. some of the dirtiest surfaces included oven handles, refrigerator doors, vending machine buttons and keyboards. and three out of four break room sinks were dirt write. the scientists did not look for specific germs but says it is likely the surfaces were teaming with bacteria. they underlined the importance of washing your hands before eating or drinking especially if you have just been in the break room. safety out of the sun.

he has a nasty respiratory infection and he has to go to vegas. he was -- scheduled to go to vegas this weekend for four shows. will be canceled. he has to rest for seven days. when you go to vegas to see elton john that's a thing, you plan it. maybe for six months or a year in advance. people that have tickets inform this weekend's show, it will be hard to make up. >> lot of dis appointed fans. sharon stone is being sued by her former nanny for, that she made. >> yeah. >> about philippine those this is a crazy story. because this nanny says that sharon stone didn't want her speaking to the kids because she didn't want them speaking with a filipino accent. you hire a nanny, her job is to communicate and take care of the kids. that's kind of odd to me she wouldn't want her to talk to her. the kids, how else will she communicate with them? this nanny says that sharon stone forbid her to read the bible in her own room in sharon stone's house. she talked about the filipino foods and i think the real issue came about when she says, nanny

we had a lot of storms brewing out mr. >> yes. exactly. they were right close to d.c. of course, over d.c., too. today we have fewer storms. most of our action today is just down to the south and off to the south and west. as you will see in a moment. we have at least a brighter looking sky now that pretty blue with the clouds, those puffy white clouds in the foreground. some of you down to our south again getting rain around spotsylvania county. as you will see in jt a moment. our temperature currently stands at 83 degrees. reagan national, so many neighborhoods today. low 80s. south at 15 miles per hour. the dew point at 64 degrees. but again, we are going to be turning that humidity up for the holiday weekend. down to the south we go. checking you on those storms around fredericksburg, good batch of rain come down an inch an hour around route 1 there. heading northward. then we have more rain down to the south just west of i-95 around beaver dam area. that's headed to the north and northeast.

towards spotsylvania. some of the same locations that got some rain earlier. fewer storms but still couple of neighbor hads really getting drenched. we will have the isolated hours and storms up until about 9:00, 10:00, 11:00 p.m. we will see showers for tomorrow morning and know most of the showers at 5:00, 6:00, 8:00 tomorrow morning will be east of i-95. so we will be starting out in the mid to upper 60s for tomorrow morning. the other story, again, the heat. where is that heat coming from? it is coming from the west and plains. dallas at 92. right now 09 degrees in memphis, tennessee. that's all going to be making its way eastward where we are going to be around 90 degrees this upcoming weekend. the futurecast behind me, our projection for early tomorrow morning, again, few showers, mainly east of i-95. they will be scattered. not heavy. we have a chance, slight chance, 30% chance to get more storms in here tomorrow afternoon. then saturday, yes, we have things pretty quiet on saturday. but there will be an approaching weather front and i think as we heat up for the holiday weekend,

well, that would be big hurricane for you p.m. right? conditions in the atmosphere and ocean, for the hurricane season coming up, june 1 to november 30, noaa, hurricane research division is calling for a near normal season. 07% chance we will see 9 to 15 storms of which 4 to 8 would be hurricanes. 1 to 3 would be a major hurricane with winds over 111 miles per hour. that's the forecast right now. the way it usually works is we start to move through the hurricane season for the atlantic. usually revise that forecast based on the conditions. right now, just a near normal season for us. speaking of the smaller storms, just take a look at radar behind me. storm 4 radar now, big storms firing down to the south of us. again, not quite what we saw the last couple of days. nonetheless, we are watching this area right around culpeper county and down ruined spotsylvania county. we have one cell around culpeper. that will be making its way towards warrenton bringing rain rates of about an inch an hour.

we have another area here moving through spotsylvania county. spotsylvania in the next 31 minutes, todd's traffic the american the next 43. 54 minutes, brocroad. not seeing much lightning. that's good. possibility of hail low, too. lot of rain and that means it will be slow go on area roads important the evening rush. tomorrow's high temperature is 85 to 87 degrees. not only hot but it is going to be humid. beach, looking like the great location to go or anywhere near the water. 66, ocean city water temperature. right now we are calling important the temperatures saturday, sunday rs, memorial day. upper 70s to 80 degrees. nice. getting humid and sticky with winds probably picking up on monday out of the southwest at 10 to 15 miles per hour. there is your look at your weekend for saturday, sunday, monday, 89, 87, 90 degrees. can't rule out an isolated shower on saturday and sunday. as we get to memorial day, better chance for seeing one of the isolated showers, maybe

an inspirational story about a photographer who found a very creative way to support breast cancer. >> you may have seen the pictures online. a man in a pink tutu photographed in unusual and historic places. nbc's natalie morales has more on the tutu project. >> reporter: for the last nine years, photographer bob karey traveled across the country, taking hundreds of self-portraits. his ritual was always the same. finds his spot, sets up his tripod, focuses his camera, and then does something -- well a bit out of the ordinary. he strips down to nothing more than a pink tutu. >> i feel like i'm giving everything i have for these images.

>> reporter: his pictures have been described as magical from subway platforms to public beaches. parking lots to amusement parks. bob lets his imagination soar. his inspiration, his wife linda. they have been happily married for 24 years. >> i started using this project to get away from things. and to start expressing myself and it turned into this journey. >> reporter: bob's unlikely journey began in 2003 when linda was diagnosed with an aggressive form of breast cancer. as she faced grueling rounds of radiation and chemotherapy, the tutu project became an outlet for them both. a way to laugh through the tears. >> he forgets about things and becomes this guy in the tutu. >> reporter: just three years after linda's initial diagnosis, her cancer came back. this time it spread to her liver. her doctors say it isn't
