for the luggage. >> reporter: of course, the meaning of this memorial day is about americans who've made the ultimate sacrifice. at arlington national cemetery, troops placed a flag at over a quarter million graves. >> each one of these veterans are touched and shown they are remembered. and i think it's very humbling to be part of that. >> reporter: vice president joe biden paid tribute to the survivors of fallen warriors speaking to his own loss years ago. >> there will come a day that the fog of your son or daughter or husband or wife brings a smile to your lips before it brings a tear to your eye. you are not alone. >> reporter: on this memorial day 2012, honoring the americans who've sacrificed for our

freedom. and this will be a poignant memorial day here in washington as the nation marks the 50th anniversary of the vietnam war. brian mooar, nbc news, washington. in our area close to a million people are spending this holiday weekend out of town. the roads certainly are quieter this morning than they were yesterday. aaa says about 875,000 washington area residents are traveling more than 50 miles this weekend. that's almost 17,000 more than last year and most of them are driving. in fact, aaa expects nearly 90% of people traveling to do so by car. drivers heading to ocean city for the memorial day weekend had a smooth ride on the highways. the bay bridge had a steady stream of traffic, but there were no major backups throughout the day yesterday. that's unbelievable. travelers heading to the eastern shore will have to pay $1.50 extra.

at the senator. jury deliberations will pick back up on tuesday. attorneys for george huguely are pushing for problem with us with the jury. huguely was found guilty in february of killing his former girlfriend yeardley love in 2010. the charity started by assistant coach at the center of an abuse scandal is seeking court approval to shut down. the second mile was started 30 years ago to help underprivileged children. there are no more child referrals. sandusky is accused of sexually abusing boys he met through that program. sandusky's trial is set to start next month. zblamplts traffic alert now for metro riders this weekend. be sure to add extra time to

the lawyer for the man accused of killing a 6-year-old 30 years ago is said to be currently ill. he told police earlier this week he killed etan patz. he lured him into a basement, choked him and put his body in a plastic bag in the trash. even though he admitted to it, criminal experts still have to prove hernandez murdered the little boy. >> they're going to have to be able to place him at the crime scene. show he had some type of motive and perhaps either some inclination to commit the crime either before or after, before they're able to tie this up.

parkwood place northwest takes the cake. police say a woman used her 6-year-old son, her 6-year-old son to steal an iphone. but i'm getting way ahead of this story. police have tried all sorts of things to curtail iphone thefts. metro transit police have used decoys down under and when the crook grabs the phone, the cops grab the crook. that's what d.c. police did wednesday afternoon. they had an undercover officer here pretending to be asleep with his hand next to his iphone. the woman comes with her son and tells the little boy to grab the iphone. and grab the iphone he did. that woman, the young boy and the stolen iphone continue up 14th street. they turn around and see the undercover officer's getting up. they drop that phone, but it's

6-year-old in new york back in 1979. his attorneys say he's mentally ill and suffers from schizophrenia and bipolar disorder. an undercover sting helped catch a mother who used her 6-year-old son to steal an iphone. it happened in northwest. an officer pretended to be asleep on the sidewalk with his phone at his side. the woman told her son to get the phone and he picked it up. police arrested the man a short time later. the child has been referred to social services. new this morning, police are searching for a woman who stabbed a woman in the jaw. it happened last night on m and 7th street northwest. her name hen her condition are not being released at this time. new monitors are headed to syria where they believe people were killed by government forces. it happened yesterday in the homs province which has been during the uprising.

the monitors have fanned out in the country. human rights groups say president bashar al assad has killed thousands since the country's uprising more than a year ago. in about an hour, astronauts will be able to access the spacex dragon capsule. the supply ship reached the iss yesterday. the dragon has a thousand pounds of food, clothing, and other supplies. the hatches are set to open at 7:30 a.m. so the unloading can begin. hopefully they hope to shuttle astronauts to the space lab. >> this mission is only a beginning of a widening. >> the dragon capsule is expected to return to earth next thursday. the u.s. postal service will offer almost all of its mail handlers as buyout as it tries

anything to stop hemorrhaging money. the postal service lost $3 billion in the first three months of 2012. it's planning to consolidate more than 100 post offices around the country to cut costs. the usps has to cut its workforce by 150,000. a better hiring outlook and lowering gas prices pushed consumer confidence to its highest level in four and a half years. that's according to the thompson reuters survey. that report says consumer sentiment jumped to 79.3 in may. that's up from 76.had last month. maryland made the top five list of states where drivers are most likely to get a speeding ticket. nevada tops the list followed by georgia, alabama, florida, and maryland.

atlanta is the most ticket happy city. high-ranking lawmakers in wisconsin are in hot water after placing photos of their completed ballot on social networking websites. lawmakers immediately took down the photos after being told about the law. prosecutors are unlikely to seek charges against any of them. the u.s. government is using twitter to help discover emerging health issues. the department of health and human services has started the trend i trending. users can figure out he the top five health concerns in their roadway. this weekend is a special one for five people in fairfax county. that's because it's their first as newly sworn in citizens.

to rob a taco bell in virginia didn't get any money. surveillance video caught the man crawling into a drive-thru window wednesday night. when he demanded the money, employees told them they just locked up and the money was in a safe and no one had the combination. the robber then took off through the back door. it's a popular warm weather activity that carries a lot of hidden dangers. hundreds of people will spend this weekend on the potomac. i took a tour to see what they're doing to keep people safe this weekend and the rest of the summer. >> reporter: we geared up with helmets, life vests, and terrain searchers to ride on the river. the potomac is known to be a warm weather hot spot. but it's not all fun and games. a few minutes under water could be fatal. the last few years having deadly. in 2008 and 2010, two people

drowned. ten died in 2009. but last year no one was killed. >> there was a sign saying no boating. that's not good. >> reporter: last april her husband had a harrowing experience on the river. he fell in the water. he and his friend holding on for hours. >> hit my like a bolt. you've got to call 911. that's it. don't hesitate to call them. that's what they're there for. >> reporter: the rescuers are ready to respond, but they say they hope the public respects the river. the water looks choppy on the surface but officials say what's really a big concern is what's happening beneath the surface. >> because you've got all this jagged rocks underneath, it forms these currents and contra currents that are going to suck you under water. >> reporter: but the water's knots the only threat.

u.s., it's out. according to the dr. beach survey, coronado beach in california took the top spot. it's across the bay from san diego. it's also the home to the iconic hotel that featured marilyn monroe's 1958 film "some like it hot." of the top ten, only one in the northeast made the beach in east hampton, new york. >> the hamptons. manage that. surrounded by $40 million estates and a fine beach to boot. >> that's why they're $40 million. >> ocean city's not on the list? >> no, it's not. >> maybe next year. >> you know what? they're the best beaches we have and it's better to have a bad beach than no beach at all. >> and we're going to have great beach weather especially for sailing. >> good sailing weather the next couple days. if you're making the trip over the bay bridge, you're on your way for for the weekend. the weather almost could not be any nicer.
