a star studded concert to kick off memorial day down on the mall. good evening, everyone. i'm chris gordon. a big dress rehearsal tonight for tomorrow's national memorial day concert. the tribute to our veterans will air on tbs. darcie spencer is live tonight from the west lawn of the capital with a me view of tomorrow's big show. >> reporter: the show is never a disappointment. it certainly wasn't tonight. beautiful evening, wonderful entertainment. it's all about honoring those who served and sacrificed. ♪ >> jessica sanchez, runner up in the american idol competition sang the naggal anthem. a kickoff to the memorial day concert dress rehearsal at the capitol. ♪

shift during the cold war. >> the ship we were on was the president's ship, the floating white house. we're having a special commemorative ceremony here today to have our ships model displayed on in the president's room at the navy memorial. >> very patriotic, it makes you feel proud to be an american. and we still have a heartbeat left in us yet. >> earlier today, rolling thunder also participated in a wreath laying at the navy memorial. neighbors and friends pounded the pavement today in buoy, maryland. dozens turned out for the annual memorial day weekend parade. the procession began at buoy, high school. people say they came out to celebrate america's heroes. >> i wanted to give thanks to all the americans that supported us. >> freedom is not free. you have to remember all those men and women and our armed services. >> this year's event featured

high school marching bands, pipe and drums, and the steel band. it was a perfect night to ride your night around town. it's the 25th anniversary of rolling thunder. chuck bell joins us from the weather center with, a look at the forecast for tomorrow and tonight. >> yes, indeed. quiet night out there now. after finally some showers that were making a pretty good run at the capital beltway. current temperatures remain mild indeed. it's definitely a top down windows open kind of night. 73 in culpepper, 7 at the naval academy in annapolis. not much going on. there were a few fading showers coming out of frederick and washington county, maryland. up into the upper parts of louden county, virginia. that is all now fading away as we head into the overnight

hours, it's going to be pretty quiet for the rest of the night. what about tomorrow? patchy fog, 72. first thing in the morning, 88 degrees and toasty warm by 1:00, scattered showers and thunderstorms again in the picture for tomorrow late afternoon into the evening time frame. a little more detail about that, and, of course, the memorial day forecast, the rest of the seven-day all that coming up in a few more minutes. things got heated tonight at a candlelight vigil for a d.c. mother shot in front of her children in february. yolanda stone died from her injuries just last weekend and police are still looking for her alleged killer. stone's sister got angry tonight when a friend of the cook family showed up at the vigil. police were called in to stop the altercation, and the vigil went on as planned. stone's sister explained why she lashed out. >> mother's know where their kids are. there's no way you can tell me

you went three months without knowing where your child was. any child will always turn to their mother. you can't turn to nobody else, you can always turn to your employer. >> they had children together, they got into a fight in february in northeast washington, which ended with stone being shot. police are offering a $25,000 reward for cook's arrest. a funeral will be held for yolanda stone monday at the baptist church in southeast. the sisters of a man charged in the disappearance of etan patz are shocked to learn their brother confessed. he was 18 years old in 1979 when 6-year-old etan disappeared. hernandez confessed to strangling the child. his sisters say he talked about hurting a child years ago, but didn't go into details. the body of etan patz has never

been found. the pope's butler has been arrested. he was always seated up front in the pope mobile. he was arrested wednesday after investigators allegedly found hundreds of confidential documents in his apartment. the butler is accused of leaking the documents to the italian media in an alleged effort to discredit the vatican's secretary of state. this follows the ouster on thursday of the head of the vatican bank. still ahead at 11:00, a successful dragon mission. the latest from the international space station. goats are solving a serious problem in prince georges county, as well as helping the environment.

a new first in space today, the astronauts aboard the international space station opened the hatch on the space x dragon capsule. the crew floated in the space module for the first look around. the dragon capsule arrived yesterday. it is the world's first commercial supply ship to dock at the international space station. until now the end of the u.s. space shuttle program meant nasa was forced to rely on russian spacecraft to get supplies up to the station urge there is a revitalization effort underway in the temple hills section of prince georges county. the group behind the cleanup used a novel approach to get some attention and landscaping done as well.

they hired goats to trim a big bush near iverson mall. >> iverson mall can plant the beautiful rose bushes and make a beautiful garden. >> and for them to be able to see there is a farmer's market here. again, we want people to shop local, spend money in their communities. i was pleasantly surprised to see the goats. i've never seen goats in real life before. >> the goats can eat 10 to 15 pounds of vegetation every day. a rare sight, a bull loose in a backyard.

it was not the sight seeing tour some visitors signed up for. 78 people were stranded above the ground at a scenic mountain resort in china. they were stuck in place four hours. heavy rain kept the rescuers away at first. once they arrived the only way to get the tours back to the ground is climbing down a very wobbly rope ladder. the cable car system stalled when a gear failed. no injuries were reported. it's name is baryl and it's already creating havoc for people vacationing in myrtle beach. no swimmers are allowed to go any higher than waist deep.

>> that's good advice. >> rip currents a huge danger down there along the southeast coast. it's not a large tropical system, any time you get the surf turned up like that, you can get very dangerous rip currents. that's going to be trouble for them for the remainder of the holiday weekend. for us, along our coastlines, high pressure in charge, that means good weather for anything you want to do outside. nowhere near the rip current threat. the good news is, our good weather looks to be lasting all the way through the reminder of your holiday weekend. outside on a beautiful saturday night here in washington. sidewalks were with packed, northwest, southwest, southeast, everywhere. everyone enjoying the fine weather as well. hopefully you had a chance to get out and enjoy your saturday. if you didn't, there's more good weather coming your way for tomorrow and monday.

outside right now, a partly to mostly cloudy sky hangs over washington. the monument still clearly in view. it's a muggy night, though. 78 degrees at national airport, with dewpoint temperatures flirting with 70. humidity 74%. a light wind out of the south averaging only 10 miles per hour. southerly winds will continue overnight. overnight low temperatures won't drop a lot further than where. everybody still in the mid to upper 70s. the cloud deck will make for a mild start in the morning. hagerstown, maryland starting off at 69 degrees. tomorrow afternoon, quick shower around lunchtime. most of the daylight hours will be dry. as we get toward 8:00 tomorrow evening, rain chances sneaking back in, especially for you folks in northern maryland, out into west virginia. right where we had the rain chances today, we'll have them again tomorrow. random raindrops left in and

around town. there's that fading cluster that came out of southern pennsylvania dried up just as it came into parts of the potomac. we'll with be dry for the remainder of the overnight hours tonight. the hurricane is drifting westbound, weather will continue to deteriorate from charleston to jacksonville. for us, our good weather is going to continue. look at the explosion of strong thunderstorms today. that will happen again tomorrow right along that weather front up to our north. we'll be watching for thunderstorms tomorrow afternoon. overnight, passing clouds, patchy fog and muggy. tomorrow sunshine with summer humidity and late day thunderstorms once again. beach and boating weather. surf temperature 70, upper 70s to near 80, and our extended forecast hot and humid, all the way through tomorrow, monday and tuesday. rain chances lingering about, but essentially not going to be a washout by any stretch of the

the mystics, check out this kid. check out the gun show. look at mom in the front show, she's laughing. that's hysterical. the mystics are up 14 in the third. they force a turnover. off the bench, she had 19 points. tamika johnson drives right down the lane. the mystics aren't done yet. monique curry with the jumper from the corner for two of her 15 points. washington gets their first win of the young season 64-61. and a quick update on the nba. the celtics are moving on to the eastern conference finals. they beat the sixers in game 7 of the semifinal series. 85-75. boston will take on the heat for the right to play the nba title. >> thank you, amber. finally tonight, a woman in california got quite the thrill when she woke up, looked out her window and saw a bull in her front yard. it happened friday near fresno.

the 1,500 pound bull was trying to knock down her fence. police were already on the bull's trail because he caused trouble in other parts of the city the same day. they coraled him and lured him into a trailer. the inspector figured out who the owner was, and the bull was returned safely. >> he's a bull, that's what he does. he knocks things over. >> yeah. that's our news for tonight.
