this is "news4 midday." good morning, everyone, and welcome to "news4 midday," i'm barbara harrison. it's tuesday, may 29th, 2012. right now -- fans are saying good-bye to the godfather of go-go, chuck brown. brown's body arrived this morning at the howard theater in northwest d.c. where a public viewing is just beginning. the music legend performed many times for fans at that theater. now they're once again gathering there. news4's megan mcgrath is live at the theater and has more for us now. now megan, good morning. >> good morning, barbara, chuck brown had a large and loyal following. you can see that by looking at this line. just how many people are here, we have hundreds of folks

waiting in line to go in and say one last final farewell. some of these people have been here since about 7:30 this morning. it's hot out here. many don't have water, but they're willing to wait in line just to say good-bye to a music legend. ♪ ♪ ♪ chuck brown, the godfather of go-go, up on stage. that's where he lived his life. so it seems only fitting that in death, his fans are saying good-bye inside the howard theater. >> chuck brown has left us a great history of legend of go-go for almost 30-some years of music. >> reporter: the spirit of go-go fills the space today. fans are flocking to the howard theater to see chuck brown. but this time, it's to say good-bye. and in some ways, thank you. >> he went out doing what he enjoyed doing. he brought happiness to lot of people you know. it's a sad occasion. but then again it's a celebration of life so we're

here to say, i'm here personally to say thank you to the family for sharing him with us and thank you to chuck for the many years of go-go. >> reporter: what were his concerts like? >> real go-go, fun. he would get you up on your feet. >> reporter: the line outside the theater began to form hours before the viewing began. most have been listening to brown's music most of their lives. and his concerts? >> whoa, you had fun. you had a lot of fun. a lot of connection. a lot of interaction with the music and a lot of dancing. and a lot, it was a lot of dancing and with the dancing it brung a lots of people if all different areas of washington, d.c., baltimore, new york, everywhere. it was just a lot of fun. and it was no shooting, no fighting, everybody got along. >> reporter: those who met brown say he had a real knack for bringing people together. especially the young people of the city. >> he taught them how to keep

themselves calm. the way he talked to the crowd, they would calm down in a minute. they would all listen to him. >> i remember chuck 40 years ago and i like his go-go music. because there's no pro fanty in it. i could play it at a cookout, cabaret, receptions, weddings. >> you can see the line here, it continues to get longer and longer. the public view something going to be until 10:00 tonight. in fact, jay, if you can turn around toward the door, they've just opened the doors, so we're starting to see the first people go inside. previously it was just for family. family and friends and dignitaries. they had a bit of private time. but now they're letting the public in. if you are coming down here today, again, very, very hot, the sun is very bright. bring some water with you, this is long line, it will take you a while to get through it. reporting live from the howard theater, megan mcgrath.

>> definitely looks like a real celebration there, megan. >> reporter: absolutely. if you plan to go to today's viewing, organizers urge you to take metro. d.c. police closed t street near the hourt theerd from 7th street to florida avenue in northwest washington. the roads are blocked on 7th and 8th streets between florida avenue and s street. the roads will remain closed until midnight tonight. turning to the weather now and the chance of storms this afternoon. right now it looks good, but it's hot out there. storm center 4 meteorologist tom kierein joins us with the first forecast. how hot is it right now, tom? >> we've climbed into the 80s, barbara and we hit around 80 degrees around 9:00 this morning. right now here just past 11:00, we're in the mid 80s, 85 at reagan national. we have a lot of humidity in the air. and later today, it's probably going to climb up to around 9 0 or so. but all around the region, from the mountains to the atlantic beaches, we're well into the 80s, including all of virginia,

all of maryland and most of west virginia. now later this afternoon, when we'll have a cold front approaching, we'll likely have clouds darkening and moving in, some thunder and lightning, and as well, perhaps some strong, gusty winds, maybe even a little bit of hail. before then, going partly cloudy with temperatures climbing to the low 90s, parts of virginia, around 2:00 or 3:00 and after that is when we'll likely get the storms moving from west to east. probably not into the metro until around after 5:00. continuing perhaps into this evening. i'll have details on that we'll look at some fresh changes on the way here for the rest of the week that will be coming up in just a few minutes. barbara? >> thank you, tom. and let's see if everybody got back home safely. here's danella sealock. any problems this morning, danella? >> unfortunately, yes, barbara. a couple of crashes to watch out for. 17th street at m street northwest. be careful of that intersection, crash there involving a

bicyclist. and that road is closed. let's head over to the inner loop of the beltway at little river turnpike. seeing big delays in the area, three of your right lanes are blocked due to crash there. stick to the left and avoid the area if you can. now let's head over to i-66 eastbound, road work taking away the left lane as you make your way past nutley and head to the beltway. you're under speed, about 40 miles per hour. back to you. >> see you again shortly. thanks danella. new this morning, we're working to find out how man died, after he was found lying in the middle of the street. found on the 5600 block of annapolis road in maryland last night. all investigators are saying at this time is that the man suffered from trauma to his body. he was taken to a nearby hospital where he died. the man wasn't carrying any i.d. at the time. if you have any information about what may have happened, you are asked to call police. and right now, firefighters in alexandria are trying to figure out what sparked a fire at a storage facility. it started early this morning on eisenhower avenue, news4's

tracee wilkins has more. >> reporter: this morning's fire at this self-storage facility actually shut down eisenhower avenue. that's how big it was. now, fire investigators have moved on into the next phase of all this. and that's trying to figure out how it started in the first place. >> they can't let me in, this is my truck, all my equipment is here, i have another van on the property, we can't even start working today. >> reporter: ivan is frustrated, a business owner who uses a unit here at atlantic self-storage in alexandria. for now, this facility is the scene of a fire investigation. and dozens of people who use units here have either lost or have damaged possessions. >> it's my material there, all the wood, all the tools, everything that i use and the yellow truck over here is mine as well. >> reporter: fire spokesmen say anywhere from 40 to 60 units may have been impacted. >> from us checking to make sure that there was no fire in there, or from the fire itself. >> reporter: while an unreported

fire inside of a storage unit is unusual, fire investigators say it all depends. >> it is unusual but with the storage contents, we never know what's in there. >> reporter: the actual cause of this fire is still under investigation. in alexandria, i'm tracee wilkins, news4. this morning, the ntsb is trying to figure out why two planes collided in mid air in northern virginia, killing two people. the planes crashed around 4:00 yesterday afternoon near silver road in fauquier county. the crash was so violent, the two planes landed about a mile apart from one another. one of the planes caught fire when it hit the ground. the pilot and a passenger in that plane died. a news4 crew found the plane in a wooded area reduced to nothing but rubble. near a man's back yard. >> i mean that's relatively close. >> about 400 yards away. is what it is. >> and how does that make you feel? >> blessed. very blessed right now. >> reporter: why? >> because we could have been in the house when the plane struck it.

>> the pilot of the other plane was able to land in this field. he was taken to washington hospital in fredericksburg, we don't know his condition at this time. none of the victims' names have been released. the faa tells news4 it could take weeks to figure out what caused the crash. maryland state police say speed may be a factor in a deadly crash in clinton. it happened at 11:00 last night near the intersection of branch avenue and woodyard road. police say 23yard jason patton somehow lost control of the car he was driving and slammed into a guardrail and some trees. patton died. no one else was hurt. a 30-year-old man from lorton, virginia, faces charges in a deadly hit-and-run in ocean city. please say diego fancini was behind the wheel when he hit a 22-year-old man trying to cross coastal highway. the suspect did not stop. police say he was drunk and speeding. witnesses followed him until

police eventually caught him and arrested him. the victim, matthew chesswick of cooksville died. police-involved shooting at a condo in alexandria. police say they were trying to arrest a plan for destruction of property when he confronted them with a knife, police say the man did not listen to orders to drop the weapon. that's when offeicers fired. the 61-year-old man was flown to the hospital. police say they've had contact with the man before and he had exhibited some unusual behavior then. neighbors say the suspect was known as a good samaritan. >> i think he thought he was a sheriff of our community here. >> there was never any danger. i never saw him do anything or do anything out of the norm. >> i wouldn't expect something like that. like i said, he always seemed real helpful. >> police have not released the suspect's name at this time. it's 10:00 after 11:00. coming up, why mitt romney is

we're following a developing story in northern italy. at least 15 people were killed when a 5.8-magnitude earthquake

hit about 25 miles northwest of bologna. it was shortly after :00 a.m. in italy when the quake hit. there are several reports of people buried under rubble at this time. at least one historic structure collapsed. right now, rescuers are stem cell research searching for survivors this is the same area where a 6.0-magnitude quake hit earlier this month. hundreds of buildings were damaged or destroyed then and seven people died in that quake. new today, the u.s. joined governments around the world in expelling syrian diplomats. the coordinated move comes days after a gruesome massacre that killed more than 100 people in the syrian village of hula. the u.s. zbost condemned syria for using tanks and artillery for attacking the neighborhood. other countries all expelled syrian diplomats from their countries. today, 13 people ranging from musicians to human rights activists to a basketball coach will receive the nation's highest civilian honor.

president obama will host the recipients of the presidential medal of freedom at the white house. this year's honorees include former secretary of state, madelyn yale bright. astronaut and senator, john glen, nobel prize-winning novelist, toni morrison. singer-songwriter, bob dylan and former university of tennessee women's basketball coach, pat summit. it's a big day for mitt romney, expected to formally clinch the republican presidential nomination. 155 delegates are up in grabs in texas, polls open today. romney only has to win 58 to win the 1144 needed to become the nominee. romney will celebrate the milestone with donald trump in las vegas just days after the real estate mogul made controversial comments about president obama. earlier this month trump claimed that president obama was born in kenya and raised in indonesia. that despite president obama

releasing his birth certificate proving he was born in hawaii. romney addressed the controversy by saying he doesn't agree with all of his supporters, but appreciates his votes in november. today the military is pausing to remember the life of president john d. kennedy. the army is holding a wreath-laying ceremony at the former president's grave site to honor what would have been his 95th birthday. the ceremony at arlington national cemetery comes days after the 50th anniversary of president kennedy's dpamed 45th birthday party at madison square garden when marilyn monroe sang that steamy "happy birthday, mr. president." >> do you remember that birthday party, tom? >> i wish i was there. >> we've got some hot, sultry weather. >> it feels more like mid summer than late may. the last day of it, we do have a break in the heat and humidity coming. but it's coming at the expense

of some thunderstorms coming our way here. but between now and then, we'll be heating up. there's a live view from our nbc 4 hd city camera. panning the monuments over washington and there's the potomac river, it is humid. we have temperatures right now hitting the mid 80s. reagan national is at 85. dew point is at 70. that is typical mid summer humidity and it's going to be with us here throughout the rest of the afternoon. a southwesterly breeze around 10 to 15 miles per hour. now all of these areas in orange have reached the 80s, it includes about all of virginia, all of maryland. except some areas where there's a bit of a breeze off the bay. it's in the 70s, but elsewhere it is in the mid 80s, throughout all of virginia and much of west virginia, too. up into western pennsylvania, out ahead of a cool front. behind the cool front, it's in the 70s where they've had showers and thunderstorms. those have been rolling across ohio, indiana, overnight. but they are beginning to redevelop here now and they're beginning to move into west

virginia. the leading edge of any rain that's going to be affecting us, just now coming into westminster abbey western west virginia, advancing into the east-northeast, associated with a cool front that's going to be bringing us some relief by tomorrow. as we go forward with the futurecast weather, these areas in color are the zones of potential showers and storms. through mid evening we'll have our greatest chance, from about 5:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m. tonight. after that, lingering showers this area in green. by dawn wednesday, it's going to be notice eastern shore, lower part of the bay, perhaps down in the northern neck during the morning hours. by noon time, we'll have a clearing sky from west do east. and we ought to get some sunshine back tomorrow afternoon. and the noticeably lower humidity around. but for this afternoon, expect some downpours and some thunder and lightning, not occurring perhaps until around 5:00, 6:00, and before that, a partly cloudy, hot and humid afternoon. reaching the low 90s. but then when the storms do get

goingings it will quickly cool us down into the 70s. it will happen through the evening hours, too. thunder and lightning perhaps through the evening until around midnight. maybe some of the storms with heavy downpours and strong gusts of wind between about the 6:00 p.m. to the 9:00 p.m. timeframe. and by late evening, in the 70s around the region. and then during the morning hours, might have a lingering shower again south and east of washington. and then some sun back tomorrow afternoon with the lower humidity. feeling much more comfortable, highs reaching the low to mid 80s tomorrow afternoon. and then tomorrow night, turning much cooler, in fact by dawn thursday it may be down into the 50s throughout much of the region. afternoon highs in the 70s. and sunny, and then on friday, 50s again in the morning. but increasing clouds, another front coming our way, may trigger more showers and storms. friday afternoon and evening and they may linger into saturday, sun back on sunday. maybe clouding up again monday. but cooler weather, we're not going to see 90 again for quite

work the night shift more than twice a week may be increasing their risk of breast cancer. danish researchers say night shift involves exposure to light at night which decreases the production of the night hormone, melatonin. melatonin seems to protect against certain cancers. the study found that sleep deprivation leads to a weakened immune system which might increase the growth of cancer cells. in other news for your health today, some common painkillers may protect your skin from cancer. researchers in denmark found patients who regularly take aspirin and similar drugs, cut their risk of skin cancer by about 15%. the painkillers also reduce the risk of most deadly form of cancer of skin cancer, melanoma by 13%. nbc's chief medical correspondent, dr. nancy snyderman, explains why aspirin is so effective and how to get the best results. >> it seems to stop a certain chemical reaction that changes the immune system.

and once it blocks that enzyme reaction, gives people some kind of protection. they looked at people from 81 milligrams, the little baby aspirin all the way up. they found the more the aprinciple, the more aspirin that was being taken per day and the more years, up to six and seven years, those people got the protection. >> past studies have shown the drugs can also lower the risk of other forms of cancer, too. but always talk tour doctor, first, but taking aspirin. there are certain groups who should not take that drug. this morning, an 81-year-old woman is talking about how her sky-diving trip went terribly wrong. take look at this video, laverne everett slipped from her harness in a tandem sky dive connected to her instructor, she dangled as she tumbled to the ground. she went sky-diving last year for her 80th birthday. she talked about this mishap with matt lauer today on the "today show." >> i felt my harness slip on the shoulder here, my left shoulder.

right now, fans are paying their final respects to the creator of go-go music, chuck brown. a public viewing is under way at the howard theater in northwest washington. the viewing runs until 10:00 tonight. brown's funeral is thursday at noon at the washington convention center. brown died may 17th from pneumonia, he was 75 years old. at least 15 people were killed when a 5.8 magnitude earthquake hit northern italy. at least one historic structure collapsed and several homes were destroyed. right now, rescue workers are searching for survivors. this is the same area where a 6.0-magnitude quake hit earlier this month. and we have breaking news in the district right now. police on the scene of an

accident involving a bicyclist. the crash happened near 17th and m streets in northwest washington. news4's pat collins is live from there with the breaking developments for us now. pat, what can you tell us? >> reporter: we're here at 17th and m street. as you can see behind me, police investigating an accident. between that range rover over there and a bicyclist. you can see a small pile of clothing marks the point of impact. police say the bicyclist apparently was struck by the range rover. he was taken to the hospital. he is said to be in very serious condition. this happened sometime after 10:00 this morning. police have closed down 17th street between l and m as they continue their investigation here. trying to figure out who had the right of way. they're talking to witnesses. they are measuring the points here to see exactly what happened. it's likely to take some time before this intersection is

opened up. it's likely to take some time before we know exactly what led to this accident here on 17th street. at news4 at 5:00 and 6:00, we'll have more deface, but for now, back to you. >> pat, it looks like the driver did remain on the scene, the car is still there. is he talking or she, talking? >> reporter: yes, the driver i think is a woman. she is on the scene. police are interviewing her. also sent officers to the hospital to try to talk to the cyclist. they're sort of spreading out into the offices here to see if they can find witnesses to the actual point of impacts. they're doing all this, it's time consuming and we hope to have some answers coming up at news4 at 5:00 and 6:00. >> pat collins on the scene of an accident ha happened moments ago. we check on the midday traffic now, danella, any problems resulting from the accident there, i guess a little north of georgetown. >> here's the alternate roads to avoid this intersection.

17th street at m street is shut down. can you take k street or even 16th street. i can tell you if you're going to jump on k street, i'm say seeing delay on k in both directions. an iner loop of the beltway crash, at 7 it involves a truck on its side. traveling the inner loop of the beltway, you can only get by in the left lane and your delays are slow, just 12 miles per hour as you ease your way by the crash there. barb remarks back over to you. >> thank you, danella. right now, the jury in the john edwards trial has begun deliberating for a seventh day this morning. the judge met with lawyers in a closed court session to discuss a juror issue. once that hearing finished, the judge reconvened the jury. the jury is trying to decide the fate of the former presidential candidate. there's speculation that the jury may be deadlocked and unable to reach a verdict. edwards faces six felony charges stemming from the use of nearly $1 million from donors to hide

his pregnant mistress during his presidential run in 2008. an air canada flight en route to japan made an emergency landing in toronto. after debris began to fall off the plane. it shattered car windows and put a scare into people on the ground. and in the air. reporter steven de sousa with canadian television explains. >> this woman had just put gas in her car on monday afternoon when something fell from the sky. >> i was surprised when i heard a noise. i got scared, i didn't know what was that noise. >> reporter: she emerged to find damage on the side of her car and her windshield. >> i saw some pieces made of metal. it was so hot. you cannot touch it. >> reporter: the damage to jonathan's car was even worse. >> it was really strange. not something i expected to happen today, having an airplane debris fall through my windshield. >> reporter: at the same time, an air canada plane was making an emergency landing at toronto's pearson airport. the plane took off just after 2:00 p.m. eastern for tokyo.

passenger jason flick describes what happened next. >> midway through, the air conditioning kind of popped, which doesn't really happen and then, we stopped accelerating. the plane continued in that kind of angle of acceleration, but nothing happened. >> reporter: one engine had shut down. the crew flew over lake ontario to dump fuel. air canada said the planes are designed to fly on one engine. the boeing 777 circled back around, returning to pearson after being in the air for more than an hour and a half. >> we came in fast, very fast. like twice the normal speed, but i was glad, even at that speed to see ground that close and fire trucks came everywhere and apparently, overheated brakes was the only concern at that point. >> reporter: crews met the plane on tarmac and no injuries were reported. the debris fell at this gas station less than five kilometers from the airport. an air canada spokesman said they haven't confirmed the debris came from the plane. transport canada and the transportation safety board are

looking into it. this woman is just glad no one was hurt. >> it could be worse if people are walking, you know, it could be worse. good thing nothing happened, we're safe, only the car. >> that was steven de sousa reporting. passengers were given hotel vouchers for the night and rebooked on a flight to japan that left this morning. beach officials in florida say they found the body of a missing swimmer who disappeared shortly after tropical storm beryl moved through. the 19-year-old went swimming with friends near daytona beach when rough seas carried him further from the shore. search crews say someone spotted his body several miles from where he had been swimming. the tropical storm came across florida with winds near hurricane strength. it tore down trees and knocked out power. beryl is now a tropical depression and expected to soak parts of florida, georgia and south carolina today. we're going to check in now with tom kierein for the latest on our forecast, we expect some storms around here, too, later today, is that right, tom? >> we sure could, barbara and

ahead of that, the heat is on, we've hirt the 80s here and we've hit mid 8 0s in the metro area and throughout most of the region. except right near the bay waters or any breeze off the tidal potomac, is a little bit cooler. but elsewhere, well into the mid and upper 80s, petersburg, west virginia is 89. here's the radar, the area in solid color, western pennsylvania, is a severe thunderstorm watch. that line of storms is developing, pulling out of ohio as moves into the mountains. a lot of lightning associated with that and it stretches down into tennessee. the cool front i've been talking about. that is going to begin to move our way here. not until late this afternoon. perhaps into the metro area, not until around 5:00, 6:00 p.m. earlier in the mountains. and before then, up around 90 degrees, then some showers and storms, maybe some of them severe. there's a small chance of that. that would be the early to mid evening hours. maybe lingering showers tomorrow morning and cooler, drier weather moves in with lower humidity and maybe more showers

and storms friday afternoon and evening into saturday. highs in the 70s. barbara? >> thank you, tom. metro's smart trip card could soon cost less, right now, the transit agency charges you $5 for a new or replacement smart trip card. metro is now transitioning to a new vendor for the plastic card that will cost less, in turn saving customers money. the new system could let customers use credit cards or smartphones to pay for their bus and train rides. metro could introduce the new smart trip card as early as this fall. that mystery of a man who vanished on his honeymoon cruise in the mediterranean could soon be solved. the fbi agents reportedly have video of passengers after george smith fell overboard from the royal caribbean cruise liner, "brilliance of the seas" seven years ago. the video evidence could lead to an arrest in this case. the connecticut man and his wife, jennifer hagel smith were married ten days before he vanished in july of 2005. investigators have not found his
