doug has a look at this massive storm. >> one of the latest reports says 67 houses were damaged by that possible tornado. again, it has been confirm so no longer possible. it was a tornado that came on the ground. you don't see that kind of damage with a tropical system unless you see the tornado or hurricane strength, it is a, it is toward the open waters. it is now call post tropical cyclone beryl. it is now taking it on. we are going to continue to see it off the carolina coastline. this was the area right here that was hit around the buford area. we're watching that rain move off the region. for us, it won't be an impact. we're just talking about sunshine and rather nice conditions that i think will last for the next 24 hours. we'll be about something else. out there right now, 82 degrees. we're looking at problems with the camera. winds out of the south at seven miles per hour. 82 in frederick.

80 in la plata. 76 in paw tucksent river. a great day tomorrow and then on friday, the potential for some strong to potentially severe storms. we'll talk more about that coming up in a couple minutes. >> thanks. lawyers for former penn state assistant coach jerry sandusky want some of the charges against him dropped them also want the trial to be delayed. today was the last pretrial hearing before jury selection schedule to be underway next tuesday. brian moore has more. >> reporter: today's hearing lays the groundwork for what could be a week's long ordeal for just about everyone involved. the trial of form he penn state defensive coordinator jerry sandusky remains on the fast track with jury selection set to begin on tuesday. the judge denying all motions by

the defense for a continuance. and a pretrial hearing, attorneys ask for some of the charges to be thrown out. sandusky was charged with 52 counts of child sexual abuse involving ten boys over a 15-year period. many of the accusers were part of the second mile, a charity for at risk children that sandusky founded. some of the prosecution's strongest evidence is from the accusers themselves, as well as from eyewitnesses who say they saw sandusky abusing boys in showers on the campus. sandusky denies the allegations and remains on house arrest, awaiting his day in court. now less than one week away. >> there's a lot of intense media coverage. some of the victims have asked their name be kept secret. there is also concern about the privacy of the potential jurors.

virginia soldier. 59-year-old chief warrant officer john pratt of springfield was killed on monday. his helicopter crashed near kabul. a soldier from maine was also killed in that crash. two more at nato service members also died today. one was killed in an insurgent attack. the other killed by a home made bomb in southern afghanistan. three local government employees and eight policemen have died in fighting this week. a janitor at an elementary school in prince william county is facing an assault charges. the 7-year-old boy told police that ross attack him last friday. it allegedly happened at enterprise elementary school. the boy said the janitor pinned him against the bulletin board with a cart know pushed him and walked away. the police say the attack was unprovoked. the child was not injured. the jab or the is 59 years old. he has worked for the school district now for nearly 20 years. a deadly police shooting is now been declared murder.

a culpeper police officer is charged with killing a woman in a lot. it happened in february. the officer's mother has been arrested. she's accused of trying to hide something in his background. pat collins has our report from culpeper. >> reporter: daniel harmon-wright. a 32-year-old culpeper police officer charged with murder. he was on duty at the time. the victim, 54-year-old patricia cook, shot and killed as she sat in the driver's seat of her jeep in the parking lot of a catholic school in culpeper. she was unarmed. gary cook, the victim's husband, reacted to the charges last night. >> it is showing me that progress is going on. the system does work. >> reporter: james jennings created the facebook page, gist for patricia cook. >> the primary purpose of the facebook page was just to give a place for people who believe

something went wrong. something terribly wrong lapped that day. >> flowers and notes of sympathy remained at the scene. people have not forgotten what happened back in february. now at the time, police say officer wright was investigating the report of a suspicious person. police said mrs. cook tried to roll up the car window in wright's arm and that he opened fire. but witnesses say it never happened that way at all. they say the cop shot her at close range as she tried to leave the lot. though he works in culpeper, officer wright lives in this apartment complex in gainesville. scott thompson is across the hall. >> they have a little baby. is he married? >> i've seen a couple in there with a little child. i've seen him carrying the baby out. >> reporter: in an unusual twist in this already bizarre case, bethany was charged with forgery. she was the administrative stant to the police chief and it is

an italian tv reporter struggled to maintain her come poesh when you are a strong aftershock hit as she was reporting from the scene of the earthquake in italy yesterday. she will viewers it was another tremor as she described it as in her words, very, very violent. that earthquake yesterday had a magnitude of 5.8 on the scale. nine days earlier it was a magnitude 6 quake in the same area of northern italy. at least 24 people have been killed in those two quakes. seismologists say more strong aftershocks could rattle that area in the coming days. yet another killing field has been found in syria. the bodies of 13 people have

but it turns into a beautiful day. >> it really is. the weather is fantastic. a few showers to the south and east washington. those clouds gave way to sunshine, at least for most of us and today, not bad at all. another great day in store. you see one of the planes flying by as it makes its way into reagan national airport. a beautiful afternoon with that sunshine across the region. the high temperature today got to 83 degrees at the airport. the low this morning, 69. a little bit cooler as you stepped out this morning. we are 5.4 degrees above average for the month of may. that's an extremely warm month. and only two days this month have been below average. and those were not below by far. it has been a he have very warm month and i think that warmer streak is going to at least try to continue through the next couple days.

window yesterday. then he used a metal cup holder to threaten a worker's life while demanding money. police say the suspect got away with an unspecified am of cash. there has been an arrest in connection with one of the oldest cold cases in montgomery county. a murder for hire case that goes all the way back to 1975. >> it happened when bobby coley voluntarily reported to the sheriff's office yesterday thinking he was there to clear his name so he could get a job. chris gordon takes it from there. >> reporter: he is being held without bond at the montgomery county jail. bobby coley is 63. he was applying for a job as a earn the when he was told they found something that he needed to clear up. so coley went to this montgomery county sheriff's office. >> we were not finding anything. we look in judicial case search and we actually saw that a warrant popped up under that name bobby coley and it said

first-degree murder. >> reporter: it hampden here back on july 26, 1975. leopold disappeared. two days later his wife contacted police and reported him missing. but in 1974, it was reported that it was a murder for hire case, that francis crowmac hired three men to kill her husband because he beat her. >> so now the investigation begins anew. we go back, we find the original case files. >> the report said she changed her name to barbara ann stevens and moved to laurel. her whereabouts are unknown but she is believed to still be alive. bobby coley has been in and out of federal custody since 1968 when the arrest warrant was filed, he was in the d.c. jail. but then was released and apparently never knew there was a warrant for his arrest for murder. in court, the public defender said it is unfair to keep bobby

coley in jail. that police had since 1984 to investigate this case. if there even was a murder. the judge that given the serious nature of these charges, he will allow prosecutors to take a week to determine the viability of this case and whether they will proceed with first-degree murder charges against bobby coley. chris gordon, news4. the victims killed during a mid airplane collision in fauquier county in virginia are from both maryland and virginia. 57-year-old paul gardella of burke, virginia, and 60-year-old james mike duncan of bethesda, maryland, were killed in a crash on monday. investigators say it is still not clear who was at the controls. the pilot of one plane managed to land. canadian authorities are investigating because members of both planes worked for u.s. aviation agencies. maryland has decided which lawmakers will sit on a pit bull task force.

the panel was created to study the impact of the court of appeals ruling last month. the court decide that had pit bulls were an inherently dangerous breed. that means pit bull owners and anyone who has those dogs on their property could be held liable for damages if their dog should attack. three people killed at a shooting in a cafe in seattle, washington, today. the gunman still on the loose. police say he opened fire about 11:00 this morning. two other people were critically wounded in the shooting. no word on what started it all. a baby sitter is charged after three young boys she was charged with watching wandered off on their own. they are all safe. >> reporter: this woman, 22-year-old, has been charged with three counts of felony child neglect after police say she allowed three young boys she was baby sitting to wander away from a stafford county apartment complex saturday afternoon.

veterans are now available from the department of motor vehicles. the governor helped launch the program. he said the cards offer proof that veterans served. that will make it easier to take van of special discounts at stores and other businesses. they are a joint effort between the veterans affairs office and the department of motor vehicles. the cards do not expire and it takes about a week to get one. district mayor vin serve gray turned aside questions about the campaign scandal swirling around his administration. the mayor announced for public, private and chart he schools at a school in southeast. he said he still won't comment on the campaign scandal or the felony convictions last week of two of his top campaign aides. >> i don't think it is appropriate to say anything else. the city is moving forward. >> are you anxious for the moment when you can speak. >> i don't know if anybody is anxious to be in a situation like this or anxious for any moment. i don't know if that's the right

officials were called to the scene of a fire and there were reports of gunshots. firefighters found someone inside that home. they had been shot. the person was pronounced dead at the scene. the firefighters were able to get the fire you said control in about 30 minutes. no other injuries were reported. a major security breach at the san diego international airport is you said investigation. a man released from prison on memorial day was able to board a united airlines jet without a ticket. it happened yesterday. authorities say the man carrying a duffle bag slipped through an emergency door that leads directly to the tarmac. the alarm sounded but still he managed to board the plane and take a seat. >> when the subject went through the door, he just blended in with the people already waving

straight. and now he runs a laughter academy. that looks like fun. his patients include pregnant women preparing for childbirth and people with financial problems. people who can really use a laugh 20 years ago his wife was dying from hiv. he fell lonely and struggled with addiction. that's when he learn laughter can heal the spirit. he believes a man who can laugh will never be poor. it is hard to look at that and not start laughing.
