i'm pat lawson muse. >> i'm jim handly. this is day three of queen elizabeth's diamond jubilee celebration, and today the queen's husband prince philip took ill. >> he's been at her side for 65 years, even longer than she has been on the throne, and concern about him has put a slight damper on the queen's celebration. >> reporter: buckingham palace. prince philip was brought here earlier this afternoon from windsor castle after developing a bladder infection. it is a precautionary measure but he will spend several nights in hospital being observed and assessed which means he'll miss tonight's big jubilee concert in front of buckingham palace one of the real centerpiece events of the queen's diamond jubilee celebration. understandably he is disappointed. >> we'll celebrate for him and send him well wishes. all the best, prince philip,

speedy recovery. >> reporter: he has been playing an active part in the events. just yesterday we saw him by the queen's side as part of the big royal flotilla. that was noteworthy because he was on deck for more than an hour in the cold and the rain. that remarkable not just because of his age but because of christmas he sent several days in hospital after complaining of chest pains. he underwent minor surgery but was soon up and about again. the prince is said to be disappointed he won't be taking part in tonight's events and it will undoubtedly cause great sadness for him and the queen with the timing of this. duncan golestani, nbc news, london. >> news 4 meteorologist doug kammerer is in london covering the festivities. you can see his diamond jubilee reports from london today on news 4 at 5:00 and 6:00. there is a new twist today in the case of a new jersey mother accused of taking her 5-year-old daughter into a tanning booth. 44-year-old patricia krentcil

was set to appear before a judge today on child endangerment charges but that hearing has been canceled. instead, the case is now going to a grand jury. she says her daughter's sunburn came from playing outside on an unusually warm day. in new jersey it's against the law for anyone under the age of 14 to use a tanning booth. george zimmerman's attorney is trying to get him out of jail for the second time. last friday the judge sent him back to jail for not disclosing a pay pal account. it was created to fund zimmerman's defense in the trayvon martin murder case. jay gray has the latest on the case from sanford, florida. >> reporter: back behind bars now george zimmerman has been described by jailers as quiet and cooperative, something prosecutors say he and his wife shelly were not during testimony in his initial bond hearing. >> it was misleading and i don't know what other words to use other than a blatant lie.

>> reporter: allegedly hiding the fact they had raised more than $135,000 in donations for zimmerman's defense deposited to a pay pal account through this website shelly zimmerman was asked about that money during her testimony by phone in april. >> do you have any estimate as to how much money has already been obtained? >> i do not. >> last week when they asked judge lester to revoke zimmerman's bond prosecutors played a recorded jail house phone call, evidence they say of the couple using coded language to discuss the funds. in that call george zimmerman asks if my account do i have at least a hundred dollars? his wife responds no. then zimmerman followed with another question. how close am i, $8? $8.60? >> they were even using codes instead of saying like so,000 or 9,000 they were using code words thinking the police were going to be real stupid listening to these calls and won't be able to figure out what's going on. >> he understands the court's concerns. he understands the state's

concerns. >> reporter: concerns centered on what defense attorney mark o'mara insists was a mistake not a deliberate plan to mislead the court. >> if it was his intent why would he forward all the money i asked him to forward the day we asked him to? rncht just a few of the questions that could be part of a new bond hearing likely scheduled sometime next week. jay gray, nbc news, sanford, florida. fairfax county police are cracking down today on pedestrians who don't use a special crosswalk near the dunn loring metro station. construction along gallows road here has taken away a sidewalk near the metro stop. signs direct pedestrians to a marked crosswalk so they can get around the construction zone safely but many aren't using it. last week police issued warnings. starting today violators will get a ticket. police tell us it's a matter of safety. two pedestrians have been hit by cars in just the past five

months. >> they're not using the sidewalk. they're walking on the other side where there is no sidewalk in the travel lane, crossing mid block, running in between cars. all sorts of things that are very unsafe. >> tickets can be as much as $250. the construction project is expected to last for four years. metro's launching a massive ad campaign to prepare riders for one of the biggest service changes in its history. it's inexpanded service called rush plus designed to ease over crowding during the morning and evening rush. 21 stations on the orange, blue, green, and yellow lines will get six additional trains every hour during rush hour. you'll see more trains between mount vernon square and green belt and between vienna and courthouse. and there are more transfer free trip opportunities on several lines. rush plus begins two weeks from today. the moon of june through the shadow ftd earth today. here is the view near sr. sr. of

a partial lunar eclipse that appeared to take a bite out of our planet's nearest neighbor. you could see the darkening image in the wee hours of the morning. nasa says the eclipse started 3:00 a.m. pacific time, peaked just after 4:00 a.m., and ended just after 5:00. of course the partial lunar eclipse happens when the moon travels into the path of the earth's shadow. it's always a beautiful, mysterious sight. it was also visible in eastern asia and australia. >> lots of sun today to kick off the week, but it did get a bit on the cool side, too. >> meteorologist veronica johnson is with us to clear up any mystery around the forecast. hey, veronica. >> no mystery in this forecast. it will be a chilly one or at least cooler than average this week. wanted to give you a recap, too, because national weather service has been out assessing those areas from friday's storms, and they were not just feisty but fierce throughout the area. we've got nine confirmed tornadoes now in maryland, three in montgomery county, one in anne arundel county, one in howard county, one in prince

george's county, two in carroll county and one in hartford county. the other two were down south around hampton, virginia and petersburg. so that is the latest so far from friday's storms. 75 is the temperature again. we've been cooler than average. average for us running at 81 degrees now and it's been breezy today with the north wind at 20 miles per hour throughout the area of benning and berry farms at 75 degrees. higher temperatures, warmer air down south. 79 in fredericksburg and stratford. 81 in charlottesville right now. we have 70 degrees up north around frederick and montgomery county, damascus, and gaithersburg. so some clouds throughout the area. i think we'll have more clouds coming our way for the overnight period, even some isolated showers. we've got one little pesky pattern that's going to be stuck with us this week. we'll talk about the possibility of who can see showers early tomorrow morning for the morning rush and the rest of the week, too, coming up in a couple of minutes. the good news continues at

the gas pump. the latest numbers showed the prices are still dropping. according to triple-a today the average price has dropped three cents overnight in the district. a gallon of regular is about $3.69 today. in maryland you're paying $3.51 down about a penny. virginia's average dropped about a half cent. that's down to $3.39. the cheapest in our area. drivers in west virginia are paying about $3.64. analysts expect gas prices to keep dropping into the summer. turning to the race for the white house, backers of president obama are calling for a shift in his re-election campaign message amidst new concerns about the strength of the economy. steve handelsman has more. >> reporter: president obama's new ad targets mitt romney's record as governor. >> i speak the language of business. >> reporter: but democrats who agree romney fell short on jobs which romney today disputes, those democrats say president obama has to attack less and go

positive after his setback friday. the bad jobs report. u.s. factory orders fell. >> my advice to the president would be go big and go bold. folk ouns what worked for you well before. put out a specific, bold economic package and tell people what it means for the country if you are re-elected and it is enacted. >> reporter: some want a new stimulus plan and say it is affordable with low interest rates. >> we all drive on these roads. they're crummy. the broadband infrastructure is terrible. now as great time to do it. make the case. >> reporter: make the case? maybe. getting a stimulus through congress? republicans say no way. >> we have half a million people more unemployed today than when barack obama took office. going back now and doing the same thing that didn't work the first time and spending even more money that we don't have? i just think it's insanity. >> reporter: slammed by foes, second guessed by friends.

>> that guy, president obama, and michelle, are coming to my house for dinner. >> reporter: only the fund raising looks like fun, but it is work. three events today and tonight in new york city and then back up there next week for the party at sarah jessica parker's. my steve handelsman, news 4. an 11-year-old boy in minnesota it won't to school today with possibly the best excuse ever for skipping class. the fifth grader was with the president. tyler sullivan missed school on friday to watch the president speak at a honeywell facility in golden valley. immediately following the speech, sullivan had a chance to shake hands with mr. obama. when the president realized sullivan was skipping school he got out a pen and card with presidential letterhead and the note reads "mr. ackerman, please excuse tyler. he was with me." sullivan framed the note and we assume he showed it to his teacher today. >> got that seal on it. beats the doctor's note.

all the stars came out in hollywood last night for the 21st annual mtv movie awards. "twilight breaking dawn part one" took the night's biggest prize best picture. "the hunger games" won for best actor and best actress. emma stone got the first ever trail blazer award meant to highlight an up and coming star. johnny depp picked up this year's generation award after performing with the indy rock group the black cheese. third time may be a charm for one actress. the loss of a man who coined the phrase "survey says" and a young star gets ready to play another late legend. >> here to update us on the hollywood celebrity news is billy bush of "access hollywood." first up, drew barrymore is going to try this now for the third time. tell us about her new hubby to be and the wedding they're planning for the weekend. >> he is not in the business. will koppelman. they've got a bun in the oven so

they're rushing to the altar here. old school family. you know, a nice little wedding up in montecito. if you have a second home, third or fourth home in montecito you're not struggling. that's where oprah is. drew was up there. her pet. helicopters hovering above. she walked down even the walk from the house down to the garden to the altar was tented. she did kind of a garden affair. a lot of flowers. very simple. reese witherspoon and her recent husband was there, jimmy fallon was there because jimmy's wife and his business partners with drew. cameron diaz was there. steven spielberg from "e.t." where it all began, he and kate c capshaw, his wife, were there. a nice little affair. this is drew's third wedding. tom green was her second. does anyone know the first husband? can anyone think of the first husband's name? very tough trivia question. >> who was it?

>> welsh tavern owner jeremy thomas. or thomas jeremy one of the two. >> i never knew that name. all right. even when it was. hey, we lost a legendary game show host richard dawson this week at the age of 79. you have new details about his passing. >> i did an interview this morning with richard's children. his daughter shannon from his second wife gretchen who was a contestant on "family feud" and that is how he met her. one of those kisses had a little lightning in it. then his first wife, his son gary was here as well. they told us that only three weeks ago richard was diagnosed with cancer and was on his way for his first treatment. he thought he had heartburn and nothing more and it turned out to be a heart attack even before his first treatment. so it happened pretty quick. he was 79 years old. i love the picture they paint and you'll hear more of this on "access hollywood" tonight of a guy who was such an icon in the game show world.

even bigger of a figure as a father. a nice story. we'll miss richard dawson. i remember as a kid lying to my mother. shamefully. that i was sick and i had to stay home so i could watch "the love boat" and then hot lips richard dawson hosting "the family feud." >> we'll look forward to that. >> lindsay lohan is getting back to work. she is really getting into her liz taylor character. >> yeah. this past weekend she was out. the band was all back together. paris hilton and nicky hilton and her friend allison melnyk, sort of a friend of all of them, allison's birthday. they were all out together like 2004 all over again. lindsay lohan with dark hair now because she is getting into liz taylor mode. you know, looking a little more like liz every time i see her. hopefully by the time it'sll said and done it'll be a

"avengers" still in the running. >> unbelievably now the third highest grossing film of all time right behind titanic and avatar. both jim cameron movies. it is now about $1.33 billion around the world but a big weekend for charlize theron "snow white and the huntsman." you know, now in those ranks. so 56 million bucks there and right behind will smith with 29 million "men in black." >> what is coming up tonight on "access?" the richard dawson interview is great just having his kids there from those of us who love family feud and loved his action you'll really like seeing the children paint a picture of a guy who was maybe hot lips on the camera. by the way those hot lips not just from, you know, he loved it. he kissed one woman who was so nervous and scared to go on he gave her a kiss for good luck.

change. the queen's diamond jubilee celebration, the concert right now is still under way in london at this hour. here is a little bit of information about the show. the open air concert is tabing place in a specially built stadium outside buckingham palace. 10,000 people won tickets to attend the concert. the queen's royal charities invited another 8,000 people. the invitations included a picnic before hand in the queen's gardens. the gardens are not normally open to the public. all the royal family had input on the show so the performers run the gamut from rising star jesse j to former beatle paul mccartney. another high octane celebrity at the jubilee celebration is soccer star david beckham. meredith vieira spoke to him this morning. >> we're here in england right now for the jubilee. you have met the queen. what does she mean to you?

>> the queen is someone that i feel like i've grown up with, you know, like my grandmother. for us to be celebrating 65 years of her leading our country as she has is a special moment for us. >> another special moment will come in july when the summer olympic games take place in london. david beckham has made it clear that he would like to be on great britain's team. the uk is not qualified for olympic soccer since 1960. that was before he was born. there are also rumors that beckham may be asked to light the olympic torch at the opening ceremonies. he says it's an honor that would be hard to turn down, but his personal belief is that a former olympian should light the flame. news 4 meteorologist doug kammerer is also covering the festivities. you can see his diamond jubilee report from london today on news 4 at 5:00 and 6:00.

problems on two fronts today for firefighters trying to battle two big wildfires out west. a record blaze in one state is raging on while another has turned deadly. chris clackum has the latest. >> reporter: not much left of the firefighting air tanker that slammed on the ground in the middle of a wildfire sunday in iron county, utah. the pilots 48-year-old todd tompkins and 40-year-old donny chambliss both from boise, idaho were killed. >> it impacted all of the emergency and service workers, the firefighters to the law enforcement, everybody. it was tough. >> reporter: the tanker, like this one, crashed shortly after dropping retardant on the 8,000-acre fire on the nevada/utah border, a fire ignited by a lightning strike friday. >> a right wing tip had hit the ground and caused the plane sto start into a cart wheel type

crash. >> the ntsb has been called in to figure out what caused the crash and will likely look at the video of another p2 tanker making a belly landing an hour later at an airport near reno. the pilots walked away from this one. while in new mexico the battle continues against the largest wildfire in that state's history it, too, was sparked by lightning back in mid may and so far has devoured 380 square miles. >> the steepness of the terrain. we have extremely steep terrain where some of the canyons are 500 to 600 feet deep with vertical drop offs. so just trying to deal with terrain like that makes it extremely difficult to suppress. >> more than 1200 people are fighting the new mexico fire which as of today is only 18% contained. chris clackum, nbc news. witnesses in the sex abuse case against jerry sandusky will not be allowed to hide their

identities when the trial begins. jury selection starts tomorrow. the judge ruled the alleged victims cannot testify under stew stew stewed owe nims during the trial. he is accused of molesting ten boys over a 15-year period and pleaded not guilty. the legal experts say the case will depend heavily on the credibility of the prosecution witnesses due to little evidence in the case. there is more to come on news 4 at 4:00. the end of the run for an adult film star on the lam since the murder of his roommate. >> and facebook tries to become more kid friendly.

facebook bans kids under 13 so billions get accounts by lying about their age. now the social networking site is testing new technology to

later this evening loudoun county residents have a chance to talk with county leaders about the rail project.

the board of supervisors will meet starting at 6:30 to hear from residents about phase two of the silver line, which is slated to run to dulles and into loudoun county. opponents fear the county will raise taxes to pay for construction. more than a hundred people have signed up so far to speak. the board of supervisors has until the 4th of july to decide whether to remain onboard with the project. >> a quiet day for a well rested veronica johnson. we'll have clear skies tonight. >> we'll have clouds around tonight. just a few clouds and maybe even a few sprinkles. that is again the story for most of the week, which i don't think is going to interfere in a major way. a lot of folks are talking about this rare event coming up in the sky, talking about a time around sunset tomorrow here where venus is going to transit the sun and move right in front of it. and we'll be able to view it but want to remind folks of course about safe viewing because of course you are never supposed to look directly at the sun. take a look at the graphic. we're talking about tomorrow around sunset, sun sets tomorrow

high school's acclaimed latin dance team is saying good-bye as he leaves the country. news 4's derrick ward explains why. >> reporter: rhythm, grace, and learning. a lot going on in these dances and for these students at dominion high school have been awarded for their prowess and coordination. there are rewards for which there are no trophies, rewards that will stay with them long after the medal has lost its shine. >> they come, okay. we can do this. we want to work on it. and we are going to have to present. >> reporter: carlos teaches advanced placement spanish and started the latin dance team. for all of them each step takes them down a road to a fuller life beyond the high school experience like during a recent performance at james madison university. >> and they learned oh, yeah. i've got something. i want to be here.

today authorities say they have finally captured an adult film actor accused of a brutal murder in canada and a warning the detafls the case are extremely disturbing. this afternoon interpol announced the arrest of 29-year-old eric newman who goes by the name lucas magnota wanted in connection with a disturbing murder in canada. police say he posted a video called one lunatic one ice pick purportedly showing him stabbing, dismembering, abusing and partially cannibalizing a chinese college student he dated 33-year-old june lin. investigators think he mailed parts of the victim's body to canada's top political parties including the offices of the prime minister. when they searched his apartment in montreal they found blood and body parts. magnota was believed to have fled to paris. last week interpol issued a red alert for his capture. after days of eluding authorities police tracked him
