and michelle, are coming to my house for dinner on june 14th. >> reporter: only the fund raising looks like fun. >> a bit of work today and tonight. three fundraisers in new york city. next week back up to the big apple for the fundraiser at sarah jessica parker's place. jim? back to you. >> thanks, steve. >> welcome. wall street settled down a bit today. stocks closed with mixed results in this first day of trading since that plunge of 275 points last friday. the dow was down today but only by about 17 points. the nasdaq was up 13. the s&p 500 up a fraction. experts say investors appeared to be a bit less fearful today about the finances of some of the debt-strapped countries in europe. it has been a violent and emotional day in one part of southeast washington. a mother was murdered. then a street fight broke out this morning. police say somebody stabbed the mother while her young daughter was inside the home. it all happened in an apartment on 13th place. pat collins joins us with more

on this. >> reporter: doreen, police say a woman killed another woman, her best friend, stabbed her in the back. but it didn't stop there. violence sometimes leads to more violence. friends of the murder victim go after a friend of a murder suspect. there was punching and kicking. a man down. a police chase. two assault suspects arrested. and a victim treated for a cut over his eye. >> my brother is the wrong person to take your anger out on because he had nothing, absolutely nothing to do with it. so i just think they're lashing out on the wrong person. >> reporter: a lot of sadness in congress heights today. you see this street fight came in response to a murder this morning on 13th place.

the victim, 29-year-old amber kent, stabbed to death inside her apartment. police say the suspect in that case is a woman. a neighbor and amber kent's best friend. for ms. kent's relatives, it's been a torturous day. >> we're doing like any normal family is doing, we're just trying to figure out why. why did it happen to her? >> amber kent was the mother of a little girl and they say that girl was in the apartment at the time but it's unclear as to what she saw and what she knows. >> i can't even imagine what -- how the child feels to even witness something like that. it is sad. and i just pray for her. >> reporter: later in the day, an arrest at malcolm x elementary school as the suspect went to see her daughter. sharon morris said she helped to hold her down. >> did she say anything? >> no. she was intoxicated.

she was high off of drugs. so she couldn't say anything. the only thing she said she wanted to see her daughter for the last time. >> reporter: 31-year-old slis alvin charged tonight with murder. murder of her best friend. live at homicide, pat collins. news 4. thank you, pat. a developing story now. a jury has just returned a guilty verdict in a case involving a prince george's county businessman killed by two men posing as pepco workers. david williams was shot in an apparent robbery inside his home in bowie last july. police arrested craig brooks and john haston after the crime. brooks has already pleaded guilty. haston was found guilty of first-degree murder after about three hours of deliberations this afternoon. george zimmerman's lawyer wants a new bond hearing for his client. last friday a judge revoked zimmerman's bond in the shooting death of 17-year-old trayvon martin. prosecutors say zimmerman and his wife did not disclose an

account containing more than $135,000. they say the money was intended to pay for his defense. but zimmerman's lawyer claims his client was confused and did not deliberately lie to the court. a new bond hearing could be scheduled next week. zimmerman is charged with second-degree murder in the february shooting of an unarmed teenager, trayvon martin, in florida. the killer who took the life of a virginia tech student in 2009 is still on the run but a revised sketch of the suspect could help catch him. the fbi has released the image of the man wanted in the murder of morgan harrington. julie carey here now with the latest. >> reporter: well, a sketch was first created back in 2005 of a man who abducted and sexually assaulted a woman in fairfax city. dna later linked the same man to morgan harrington's death. now her family has renewed hope the enhanced sketch will lead to an arrest before there are any more victims. help save the next girl is what

morgan harrington's parents called the campaign to find their daughter's killer. now they hope the new composite sketch enhanced by fbi specialists will help someone make a connection and turn the suspect in. harrington's mother, jill, believes this more realistic sketch makes the suspect far more recognizable to those who know him or encounter him on a regular basis. >> it looks like to me the most frightening thing is that it doesn't look like the face of evil. it looks like a regular person walking a round. and that's why this composite is important is because there is someone who looks regular, walking around hiding in plain sight. >> reporter: morgan harrington was last seen leaving a metallica concert on the uva campus in october of 2009. her body was found three months later in a remote field outside charlottesville. her parents have been vigilant in their push to find her killer, even returning to the place where her body was found to draw attention to the unsolved case. in september of 2005 the same man grabbed a woman outside of fairfax city giant and dragged

her to a park where he assaulted her. now the virginia state police and fbi are preparing to launch a renewed campaign to find the suspect. billboards will go up bearing the composite sketch soon. the same technique produced a tip that led to the arrest of the east coast rapistn march of 2011. jill harrington says the decision to publicize the case renews her hopes. >> we want to find this man through investigation and the use of tools and law enforcement. >> the more places we can get this image out, the happier i am. because it will lead to an arrest and i am determined that we find this serial offender. >> the fib declined to speak publicly today but say they'll have more details soon. >> thanks, julie. investigators in the district are trying to figure out what sparked a fire on a double decker sight seeing bus. it happened this afternoon along i-295 near the sousa bridge in

southeast d.c. the back section of the bus caught fire. officials say the bus driver was the only person onboard at the time. he managed to get off safely. nobody was injured. a local emergency has been declared for parts of hampton, virginia hit hard during friday's tornadoes. the tornado with wind speeds of almost a hundred miles an hour cut a three and a half mile path through the city. city leaders estimate it caused more than $4 million in damage. the city council will consider waiving permit fees for people trying to repair all the damage. emergency management officials are touring the damage in hampton and petersburg where a tornado also touched down. the storms have moved out for now and we enjoyed cooler weather today but more rain could be in our future. veronica johnson is keeping an eye on the forecast. what's the good word? >> the good word, i'm taking a look right now at storm 4 radar where in fact we do have some showers showing up here just down to our south right now. look at the movement. northwest to southeast.

a deadly plane crash in lagos, nigeria, the commercial airliner slammed into the side of a building killing 153 people onboard and more on the ground. the boeing md-83 is operated by dana air. it was about to land when something went wrong. the pilot radioed the control tower just before the crash saying the plane was having engine trouble. it is nigeria's worst air disaster in nearly two decades. a state department official says there were a number of american citizens onboard. the national transportation safety board is investigating the crash of an air tanker that would be used to fight fires along the utah/nevada border. two pilots were killed in the crash yesterday. it happened as they were dropping fire retardant on an out of control wildfire. it was the first of two crashes

involving tankers fighting the blaze. in the second case the pilots were able to make a belly landing at an air strip in nevada. they were not hurt. the transportation security administration is under scrutiny tonight after five employees were fired and more than three dozen others were suspended. those employees all worked at the southwest florida international airport in fort meyers. a tsa investigation found security workers violated protocol by not performing random checks. it happened on the late shift during a two-month period last year. congressional leaders say the violations may involve high level airport personnel. queen elizabeth attending her diamond jubilee celebration tonight without her husband prince philip the duke of edinburgh who is in the hospital now and expected to remain for a few days. he spent several hours out in the elements yesterday during the flotilla ride honoring the queen. the officials at buckingham palace say he is being treated for a bladder infection.

prince philip will turn 91 years old on saturday. that diamond jubilee celebration continues. a concert in the queen's honor has just ended. stevie wonder, one of the headliners who thrilled the crowd. the show featured a wide variety of artists and music from all six decades of the queen's reign. elton john played and paul mccartney closed out the show. doug kammerer is in london and right in the middle of it all. >> reporter: that's right, guys. right here in london. can't believe we finally made it. a beautiful day here though temperatures are only in the 50s during the day today. a great night tonight. of course the queen's diamond jubilee celebrating 60 years on the throne. there she is right there toward buckingham palace. that is also where the concert will be tonight featuring paul mccartney and sir elton john. tonight's concert is one the main events of a four-day holiday that has brought london to life.

showers and some occasional thunderstorms this week. i do not think we'll have anything severe. that is a beautiful shot. but of course not the kind of water that you want to get in even for kayaking i think unless you are really experienced. let's talk about today. 62 is how we started the day. 75 our high. just a recap on the tornadoes. we had nine tornadoes reported in maryland. two of course in virginia. petersburg and down around hampton. but not all that rare because back in april 27th just last year we had 11 tornadoes in maryland. 19 total for maryland and virginia and the weather channel recently ranked maryland as third on the list. third or fourth. i believe third on the list for top tornadoes states. not all that rare the event that came through on friday. right now 73 for a temperature so we're starting to drop and the winds are starting to diminish a little bit. they were up around 20 plus miles per hour a couple hours ago. they're out of the north. that's the dry air.

take a look. storm 4 radar right now you can see the showers well off to the north and east of us. those are hitting areas of cecil county and coming through areas of southern new jersey. then we have showers down to the south. these are moving from charlottesville to richmond down toward williamsburg where they are a little heavier and this is the kind of scenario we're going to have all week long. mostly showers but occasionally you get some of the heavier showers coming through with maybe even a thunderstorm. the forecast here for the evening hours, for tomorrow morning, we'll have isolated showers around. we're at 56 and dropping in haagers tooun. 73 manassas. 73 la plata. 76 degrees currently in fredericksburg. forecast then for 9:00 and 11:00 p.m. we drop to the mid 60s, low to upper 50s starting out tomorrow morning. that's cool and you might need a jacket but you're going to probably lose it by the afternoon because we will be having some sunshine. not a lot of sunshine but some sunshine tomorrow afternoon. the reason we've got those

clouds, the reason that we're going to be locked into this weather pattern you saw the circulation there northwest to southeast that rotation, an area of low pressure that's locked right off the coast and while we are cool in the 70s here boston right now, 52 degrees. that is a little too chilly, like london chilly right now. 82 down in raleigh, north carolina. so here we go with your future weather. you can see some showers around the area for tomorrow morning. mainly down south and moving through. and then a better chance of showers for the afternoon tomorrow. and i think wednesday will be the one day this week not during the morning but during the afternoon that probably carries the best chance of seeing some showers maybe even an isolated thunderstorm coming through. so for your evening 63 to 69 degrees. for your overnight and tomorrow morning. 54 to 59 degrees. and then by tomorrow afternoon 69 to 72 degrees. it's going to look a lot like today and it's going to feel a lot like today including being a little breezy. we warm up on friday.

when mitt romney says "planned parenthood we're gonna get rid of that." romney is saying he'll deny women the birth control and cancer screenings they depend on. when romney says "do i believe the supreme court should overturn roe v. wade? yes." he's saying he'll deny women the right to make their own medical decisions and when his campaign can't say whether he'd support equal pay protections. of course people spend time outdoors in the warm weather and police say criminals are out too. >> they're trying to get their hands on your cash, credit cards, and phones. there was a violent attack recently near a metro stop. dorothy spencer reports on a crime of opportunity. >> reporter: now that the weather is nice, more people are eating at restaurants that offer outdoor seating. bupolice say thieves are taking advantage by swiping wallets and purses and using victims' credit cards to go on a shopping spree. >> i think somebody is watching. they're just waiting for you to turn your head. >> reporter: d.c. police say they get dozens of calls each day reporting thefts and pickpocketing. they say many victims are women with bags and purses. the thief grabs the wallet when the victim isn't looking. police say leaving your cell phone on the table is a no-no, too. >> people leaving their purses on the back of chairs, cell

phones out on the table where passersby can see the stuff laying there. it's easy to take. >> reporter: police say women should keep their bags close to them and keep them shut. we found many who were not playing it safe. one woman has her wallet sitting right on the table in front of her. >> i've never been pickpocketed before and i don't really think about it. >> reporter: some are keeping their purses within grabbing distance. >> i see that you have your bag sitting here. >> yes. >> in the seat next to you. >> i am too trusting i guess. >> reporter: sometimes the thefts turn violent. police say a man was thrown to the ground at a metro station and his credit card stolen. the cards were used near this area, south dakota avenue in northeast d.c. and riggs road in hyattsville. these are surveillance photos of the suspect using the victim's credit cards after the may 10th attack. >> the subject had gotten off the metro and was walking on the bike path. at which time he was approached from behind, assaulted, and his

wallet was taken. >> reporter: darcy spencer, news 4. street fights broke out in southeast d.c. this morning. it happened in response to a murder on 13th place and congress heights. police say 29-year-old amber kent was stabbed to death inside her apartment while a 5-year-old daughter was home. the victim's best friend is now facing charges. >> we will be learning the identities of the alleged victims of former penn state assistant football coach jerry sandusky. today a judge ruled that the accusers must use their real names when they testify in sandusky's sex abuse trial. sandusky faces 52 charges of molesting boys over the course of 15 years. jury selection in the case is set to start tomorrow. the case of a new jersey mother accused of taking her 5-year-old daughter into a tanning booth is going to a grand jury. 44-year-old patricia krentcil has pleaded not guilty. she insists her daughter's sunburn came from playing outside. it is illegal in new jersey for

anyone under 14 to use a tanning booth. a recent attack on some farm animals outraged a community in fairfax county and beyond. now that community is banding together offering a reward to help find whoever hurt them. as erika gonzalez reports, new steps are also being taken to protect the animals. >> reporter: it's taken eight stitches and eight staples but henry the calf is recovering well after he and two goats and a chicken were attacked memorial day weekend. >> a place like this, outdoors, for families or animals to be outdoors, it's a shame that happens. >> what would the world do without animals? >> reporter: police have yet to make any arrests in the case. outraged by the crime, a group called friends of frying pan park is offering $7500 in reward money. >> we'd like to really get a solution to it to find out what happened and who or what happened. how that happened. and so we get that out of our minds. >> i would wonder about what kind of security they would have to prevent something like that.

not that it is the farm's fault but how would you even predict that would happen? >> reporter: at the time of the incident henry was inside the barn and the door was open. while frying pan farm officials say barn doors can be closed they can't be locked because it's a fire hazard. police would not go into detail but say additional security measures have been implemented on the farm. many of the same detectives working this case are also trying to determine who slashed three horses exactly one month earlier at a nearby location. >> other than the proximity and location we don't have a lot of physical evidence we can talk about that would link them. however, logically it makes sense. >> reporter: fairfax county police say they've gotten some leads. they've gotten some tips. but they're really hoping this money will help them close the case. in herndon, erika gonzalez, news 4. >> the farm's operators say public safety is not in jeopardy. police in fairfax county are cracking down on pedestrians who

do not use a special crosswalk near the dunn loring metro station. construction along gallows road has taken away a sidewalk near the metro stop there. pedestrians are supposed to use a marked crosswalk to get around the construction zone. but many people are walking in the travel lanes instead. police say that's against the law. and it's unsafe. last week police issued several warnings. but beginning today violators will get a $250 ticket. two pedestrians have been hit by cars in the area recently. maryland's newest slots parlor is scheduled to open in just two days now. maryland live features more than 3,000 slot machines and electronic table games. it's located near the mall in hanover, maryland and is expected to draw big crowds. not everybody is happy about that. derrick ward reports. >> reporter: on one side it looks ready for business. on the other side it's still a work in progress. in a matter of days there is no

question the games will begin. but what about the communities around the casinos? this is the arundel mills boulevard already busy and promises to get only busier once there is casino traffic. for some it is already becoming a traffic gamble. >> there are so many people coming to the casino and coming out so it's always hard for me to pull out. i almost got in a car accident just going out of this road. >> reporter: changes in the roadways have been made. a traffic calming circle was removed to allow the expected increase in traffic flow to flow more smoothly. >> even with the road work i think everybody is trying to sink in that traffic is going to get pretty bad here. >> reporter: on the other hand the fate of retailers off site is like a spin of the roulette wheel. they could land in the black if the increase in casino traffic means they get more spinoff revenue. they could end up in the red should people decide the casino traffic is too much and opt to go elsewhere. with other gaming houses being considered in the state including one in prince george's county there are concerns that

the area could get gamed out and revenue could level out or decrease for all. such questions will only be answered in the months and years to come. derrick ward, news 4. the grand opening for maryland live is scheduled for 10:00 this wednesday night. it's open seven days a week starting at 8:00 in the morning. it will stay open until 2:00 the next morning during the week. it stays open until 4:00 in the morning on fridays and saturdays. it's been in d.c. for more than a century but the corcoran gallery of art could be moving. according to the washington city paper three sources at the gallery say leadership changes and funding struggles may prompt the gallery's board to sell the building. right now it's located at 17th street in northwest. the city paper also reports alexandria's city council is looking to redevelop the water front and the addition of a new home for the corcoran gallery could be part of those plans. coming up tonight an accident split a cadillac in half. everybody survived.

felt bullets going past me. i've never been so scared in my life. panetta presented a diary found on a dead vietnamese soldier. both the defense chiefs said the countries must work together to promote safe and prosperity in the asian pacific region. a new drug is showing prom nis the treatment of melanoma a deadly form of skin cancer. it was better than chemotherapy in clinical trials. the drug is called trimentonib and works in people with a certain genetic mutation that causes tumors to grow quickly. the drug stalled cancer growth in 22% of the patients studied and they lived longer compared to patients who were given chemotherapy alone. the drug also had fewer side effects than other drugs on the market. we should mention that the drug is manufactured by glaxco smith klein which also paid for the clinical trial. a five-car accident left a cadillac split in half in a detroit suburb of warren,

hours. first viewing is at 6:04. this is very rare and doesn't happen again until december, 2117. it is that rare. that little dot is how small venus is compared to the sun. but remember when you view it tomorrow to protect your eyes. a lot of the amateur astronomers will have a filter in front of their telescope. indirect viewing is best. venus is really hot. 870 degrees fahrenheit. that's hot. with winds up to 450 miles per hour. so venus, second planet just a crazy planet but tomorrow a lot of folks will be checking it out. i'm checking out some of the showers down south. charlottesville, richmond, a few. and with the circulation through the area there could be a few light showers showing up right around d.c. maybe around loudoun county. even prince george's county. for the evening hours. and for tomorrow morning. here we are at 4:00 a.m. the green? that's where there is going to be rain. a few showers possible.

randy whitman did a really good job especially toward the end of the season. he replaced flip saunders as the interim head coach. you got that interim title removed a couple days ago. they had the prep conference today. the team actually only finished with a 20-46 record but they did make progress. they won their last six games in a row. 8 of the last 10. the players really supported randy whitman and wanted him to be back as the head coach. he said he was approaching it like he was going to be here the whole time over the last month and he was not surprised by the decision. >> these players know who i am. and i'm a straight forward and honest as anybody. and i think that is the only way to be. i was raised that way from my mom and dad and i played for a guy in bobby knight that, you know, you knew exactly where you stood and i appreciated that as a player that you knew exactly what you had to do if you weren't playing and to keep playing. and i just tried to do that to these guys.

i'm up front, honest with them. and i think that's what they were looking for. the players enjoy playing for randy. they believe in him. he believed in them. after he took over you could see that the players improved. players played hard. they play with confidence. and so randy had a lot to do with that. >> a lot of work on that man's play. they have to decide what to do with lewis, balche, sure to be some changes on the roster before next season rolls around. meanwhile major league baseball draft tonight, nationals don't have the number one pick again. thank goodness they have the 16th overall selection. as a team right now, the nationals really trying to get back on track. they're still tied for the national league east lead with miami. kind of weird to say the miami marlins not the florida marlins anymore. but the mets coming to town just half a game back and the nationals have lost four of their last five games.

perhaps nobody struggling more than ryan zimmerman. really out of sync lately. 0 for 4 yesterday. and just 2 for his last 20. since returning on may 8th after missing 13 games with a sore shoulder he just hasn't been himself. he's hitting just spoi 240. though he insists his shoulder isn't plaguing him after sunday's game he was not mincing words when discussing his play. >> i just stink right now. so it is frustrating. but the beautiful thing about baseball, four months left to turn it around. it's definitely not what i wanted to do to start the season but can't do anything now. just got to keep working hard and continue to grind it out. it'll change. >> i talk to him and i feel like he's close. you know, he feels like he's just inching closer to feeling

comfortable out there. and he's a big guy in the lineup. we need him comfortable. i'm sure, you know, he's a good hitter. >> talking golf now tiger woods has been asked for the last two years if he is finally back to his old self. finally the answer may be yes. tiger wins the memorial. that's jack's tournament. in dramatic fashion. and the timing couldn't be better with the u.s. open just 11 days away tiger now installed as a 3-1 favorite to win the open. it's ban long time since he's won a major. tiger came into the final round four strokes off the lead. we pick it up on the 16th hole. what a shot this was. his second shot a big old flop from an impossible line. gets it to land softly on what he calls fake greens and it rolls in there for the birdie. one of the best shots of his career. and that is a vintage tiger pump. to 18. jack looking on. tiger in sole possession of the lead now.

a nine-foot birdie putt is what tiger needs to seal the deal. and he does just that. birdieing three of the final four holes including 18. he shoots a five under 67. finishes the tournament at nine under. he wins at the memorial for the fifth time and more importantly ties jack nicklaus on the all-time tournament wins list for second place at 73. >> a few back but a few to go and to bury three of the last four which was a nice finish and to pull off that shot at 16. that was kind of sweet, too. but to do -- be able to tie jack and, you know, 73 wins and to do it at such a young age, it feels really special. >> so he's at 73 wins. for people who know, he's chasing jack nicklaus's record of 18 major championships and is currently four behind at 14. but he gets to the 73rd pga tour

win exactly ten years younger than jack nicklaus did. jack's last win was at the masters at 46 years old. all right. talking hockey now capitals goalie tomas vokoun said at the end of the season he did not expect to be back and today tomas vokoun is officially gone traded to the pittsburgh penguins for a seventh-round draft choice. vokoun only in washington for one year. the 35-year-old, 25-17-2 in 48 games for the capitals. he was set to become an unrestricted free agent in july. the caps got something for nothing. the pens signed him to a two-year contract to be their backup goalie where ironically he replaces frank johnson who was the capitals' backup goalie before he went up there. a couple notes now. nba playoffs continue tonight. thunder and spurs game five. that series is tied at two games apiece. also stanley cup finals continue tonight between the devils and kings on nbc sportsnet. a couple nfl notes. an arbitrator has ruled on roger

studded lineup for the concert in front of buckingham palace to celebrate queen elizabeth's 60 years on the throne. 10,000 people got to see an amazing concert in london. there were performers from across the queen's six decades on the throne. doug kammerer is taking it all in and we'll have more of his reports this week. there is a pittsburgh steelers fan who lives in northwest d.c. a big steelers banner up on the side of her home but somebody keeps stealing it. the home owner posted this surveillance video on youtube hoping somebody recognizes the bad guy. watch the top left corner of your screen. the thief walks into the yard, grabs the banner, puts his foot against the wall for leverage and rips it down. the home owner says it happened the last thursday in may. she says he had a getaway driver near warren street. she says it is the third time her ban hearse been stolen.
