and now from washington's leading news station this is "news4 midday." good morning, everyone, and welcome to "news4 midday," i'm barbara harrison, it's tuesday, june 5, 2012. we begin with jury selection in the jerry sandusky trial sex abuse case, which is under way right now. the former penn state football coach entered the courthouse in pennsylvania this morning with his legal team. yesterday, the pennsylvania supreme court denied the request to delay sandusky's trial. a judge ruled the alleged victims will not be allowed to use fake names when they take the stand. they will have to use their real names. sandusky is accused of abusing ten boys over a 15-year period.

he denied all of the charges, opening arguments are scheduled for next week. five men face drug charges after police say they were operating a suspected meth lab in howard county. police got a call about possible illegal manufacturing at the holiday inn express on marshalee drive. news4's tracee wilkins has more. >> reporter: the scene clear here at the holiday inn express in elk ridge. but last night it was amazing, there were fire trucks and police cars and emergency crews here. because any time that you're dealing with a possible meth lab, you're looking at the possibility of an explosion. folks staying here overnight reacted to the fact that all of this was happening at their hotel. >> i got woke up by the fire department about quarter to 12:00th and they said we had a hazmat situation. come downstairs and later learned there was some kind of meth activity going in a room. >> reporter: it was the most unexpected wake-up call for

guests of the holiday inn express and suites in the 6,000 block of marshalee boulevard. someone reported a strong, unusual order coming from a fourth-floor room. >> i didn't personally smell anything, when i come out of the room. i didn't smell anything prik prior to that. >> gene was just a few doors down from the hotel room turned alleged methamphetamine lab. he was one of many guests evacuated from the fourth floor. >> third floor got to go back in i'm going to say about 1:30, 2:00 this morning. they escorted us back upstairs about 4:00 this morning. >> reporter: luckily, no one was injured. five adult males were arrested for manufacturing methamphetamine. police say they believe the men checked in saturday night. the dea, howard county police and narcotics detectives were on the scene. but some guests were not evacuated from the hotel and

were unaware what happened until they saw it at the morning news. >> we were sitting there eating breakfast and i said, i think that's our hotel. and sure enough, they said the holiday inn express, and it's pretty shocking. >> others say all is forgiven and they don't blake the hotel. >> did happens. >> i'm guessing the drugs must have got to them. that's all i can say. you know. that's just -- it's beyond me. >> reporter: howard county police say all five of these men are facing a slew of drug charges. they say none were from the area, but were traveling through the area for work. they believe they were making this meth for one another. because they didn't know where to find methamphetamine here in this area. they also say that they recovered heroin and a handgun from inside of that room. in elk ridge, tracee wilkins, news4. new from overnight, police are looking into what led to a deadly fiery crash in montgomery

county. the single-car crash happened around 1:00 this morning near dickerson road and near mount ephraim road. it appears the car hit the abutment of a railroad bridge and burst into flames. one person died at the scene and another person taken to the hospital with life-threatening injuries. now we check on the midday traffic with danella sealock, she joins us with the latest now, danella? >> traveling i-66, left lane is blocked at nutley street due to road work. but you're able to get your way past after nutley. let's head out to the outer loop of the beltway in montgomery county, a couple of accidents earlier this morning. they're now gone. but you're still seeing delays on the outer loop, in fact, 20 miles per hour as you approach university boulevard. i'll give you a live look right now. look at this at colesville road, jammed in fact. 22 miles per hour, from i-95 to i-270, barbara, back over to you. thank you, danella. turning to the weather now,

skies brightening up out there after a cloudy start to the morning. storm 4 meteorologist tom kierein joins us with the first forecast. expect rain today, tom in. >> no, just a small chance, maybe of an isolated shower popping up maybe this evening between now and then. we'll have some sun playing peek-a-boo with the clouds, as we look at the last 12 hours, we've had a few showers passing south of washington this morning. you can see there's quite a bit of cloudiness across virginia. and right along the potomac and the district of columbia, but then north and east of us, on the eastern shore, as well as northeastern maryland, they've got a lot of sunshine right now. some of the dry air may try to make its way into the metro area over the next couple of hours. these are the temperatures, the areas in light green are into the 60s. the dark green areas still in the 50s, including much of western maryland into west virginia and along the blue ridge and closer to washington now, the mid and upper 60s in the district, as well as the nearby suburbs in prince george's, arlington, fairfax and

montgomery counties. for the rest of the afternoon, clouds in and out. it should be mild, we'll be climbing into the low 70s, about ten degrees cooler than the average high for this time of year. we'll take a look at the evening, look at rest of the week, too, big changes for the weekend. that's all coming up in a few minutes and a reminder about the transit of venus, we'll talk about it in a few minutes. we'll see you in a few minutes. there's a new question into george zimmerman's finances. his attorney says zimmerman knew about a pay pal account that raised money for him. he says he was confused about his finances. right now, zimmerman is in jail. the defense is requesting a second bond hearing. a judge revoked his bond in the shooting death of 17-year-old trayvon martin. prosecutors say george zimmerman and his wife did not disclose an online pay pal account. containing more than $135,000. his attorney says a separate website has raised $37,000 for his legal fund.

loudoun county leaders have less than a month to decide whether metro's new silver line should extend into the county. more than 100 people toward the board of supervisors last night why they support or oppose the plan. they would have to pay $200 million for construction of maintenance. supporters say the cost would be offset by the economic boom the silver line would bring to the county. opponents fear expansion would bring new and higher taxes. >> the power to tax is the power to destroy. that's what chief justice john marshall said in murdoch versus maryland, years ago. >> we are a suburb of washington, d.c., however, a rail all the way out to loudoun would help solidify the position, that we have some connection into the city. >> the county board of supervisors must vote on the plan by july 4th. just minutes ago, ♪

one falls church woman got quite a story to tell about her night last night. rachel click got to meet president obama and former president bill clinton. click was one of the winners of the evening with two presidents contest. the obama campaign was holding. she and her boyfriend went to new york, attended a fundraiser at the waldorf astoria and met the current and former commander-in-chief. it was one of the fundraisers that presidents obama and clinton attended last night. >> i don't think it's important to re-elect the president. i think it is essential to re-elect the president if we want this country to have the kind of future that our children and grandchildren deserve. >> president obama will be back

in new york later this month, for a fundraiser at actress sarah jessica parker's house. virginia is expected to be one of the most hotly-contested states this november and it's where michelle obama will make her first solo appearance this election year. the first lady is expected to speak thursday at the vfw post 1503 in dale city, in prince william county, where president obama held his final rally before the 2008 election. mitt romney will spend the next two days raising money in texas. eel criss-cross the lone star state with events planned in dallas, san antonio and houston. romney is not expected to be seen with former president george w. bush or governor rick perry, who of course dropped out of the race for president back in january. romney was in the seattle area, for a fundraiser yesterday. today there's a recall election in wisconsin. voters will decide whether to keep governor scott walker in office or replace him with democrat tom barrett.

opponents are upset the republican governor ended collective bargaining rights for most state government workers. the latest poll gives walker a slight advantage. and alternate juror who sat in the john edwards case is speaking out about false assumptions made about her during the trial. denise spate said she and the other alternates wore coordinated colors to help lift the spirits of other jurors who spent days deliberating the case. a tv producer described her as flirting when she wore an off-the-shoulder red shirt. at the time the journalist didn't know that she was a mother of two, married to a model. spate said edwards smiled at the group one day in court, but not at her in particular. >> i really don't think john edwards sitting there facing 30 years potential is looking for his next date. i just thought it was ridiculous. >> yeah. and you better not be looking for your next date.

>> spate said she wore the shoulder-baring red shirt because she was going out after an evening in court, not to get his attention. the producer later apologized. the juror acquitted john edwards on six counts of corruption. there's a call for a prisoner swab between cuba and the u.s. the daughter of the cuban president tells cnn cuba could release potomac man alan gross in exchange for five cubans being held in the u.s. all the cubans are accused of spying. gross is serving a 15-year prison sentence after he was convicted of spying in cuba. gross says he was just trying to set up internet access for cuba's jewish community. we're going to check on the weather again now. let's talk to tom kierein about what we can expect today and the rest of the week. tom? >> we're hoping that the cloud cover is going to break up enough for us to see something like this. the transit of venus. there is venus, this is an image

from the 2004 transit of venus. and now here we are, 2012, eight years later, this is going to be the last time for another 105 years before we will see this happen again. >> hopefully we'll get the clouds breaking up. we'll see venus tracking across the face of the sun as it passes between the earth and the sun. it's about 24 million miles away. it's about the same size as the earth. you can sort of get a general idea of how much bigger the sun is from the way the earth and the venus are. you know, our sizes are similar. it is going to be a fascinating thing to see and a very rare celestial event. definitely don't look directly at the sun. here are some locations around town. the best one is the telescopic observing party. it's going to be taking place at the national air and space museum. it is free. that is right down there on the mall. and you can get there, try to get there around 5:45 or so to

be able to get in line to be able to have a look at it safely through their filtered telescopes. and it's going to be running until about 8:00 sunset is at 8:30, by then it will be below the tree line or the buildings, but hopefully we'll get breaks in the clouds, to be able to see it right now look at the cloud cover over washington, there's a few sunny breaks, but still quite cloudy. 67 at reagan national. an easterly breeze at around five to ten miles per hour. here are the temperatures around the region. right now it's into the low 60s to mid 60s in montgomery county. arlington, fairfax, prince george's, near the bay, low to mid 60s. this is so much cooler than average here for this time of year. for june the 5th, our average high is 81. and i don't think we're going to get anywhere close to that we've got all this cloud cover coming in from the north and east. far northeast of washington, around baltimore and the eastern shore. those areas, northeastern maryland are all bright and

sunny. around the district, throughout much of virginia, it's mostly cloudy, especially around the shenandoah valley and the blue ridge. as we go forward over the next several hours, there may be a few scattered showers here. these areas in green. right along perhaps the central southern shenandoah valley and perhaps the central blue ridge around charlottesville. later into the evening hours, any of the rain activity ending, we'll go partly cloudy tonight. by dawn on wednesday, a partly sunny day tomorrow. but then we've got a greater chance maybe tomorrow afternoon, over a wider area of some showers popping up. and then, we'll have another chance on thursday. so for the rest of the afternoon, these clouds in and out. and we'll have the light breezes out of the north and east. we may reach the low 70s by mid afternoon. back down to the upper 60s by sunset. which is at 8:30. and then partly cloudy, so enough breaks in the clouds, between 6:00 and 8:00 for the viewing of the transit of venus, we'll be down to 50s by midnight. and low 50s by dawn tomorrow. wednesday looks partly sunny, with afternoon highs mid 70s. a little greater chance of an

opening arguments are scheduled for june 11th. five men are in custody after police say they were involved in a suspected meth lab. howard county police say they got an anonymous call about a strange odor coming from a room at the holiday inn express on marshalee drive. starting today, a new immigration enforcement program called secure communities will be begin in the district. fbi agents will share information with immigration officials and local police as well. the big question is how long d.c. police will detain someone and who will pay for it. district leaders are not happy with the new program. they're introducing emergency legislation today. news4's megan mcgrath is live outside the wilson building with more on this now. megan? >> well, barbara, district leaders don't like the secure communities program. they think it's thrust local law enforcement into the controversial sphere of immigration enforcement.

lawmakers are trying to place limits on the level of the district's cooperation. the relationship between the police and the immigrant community. d.c. lawmakers are concerned that the secure communities program will upset the delicate balance. >> people afraid they'll get caught up in the immigration system are then afraid to report crimes. that means that criminals can commit crimes and it doesn't get reported to the police. >> reporter: under the secure communities program, the fbi automatically sends the fingerprints of persons who are arrested, to immigration and customs enforcement, known as ice. ice determines immigration status and whether the person should be deported. while district leaders would like to opt out of the program altogether, they can't so councilman phil mendelssohn is introducing emergency legislation that would limit the district's level of cooperation. placing restrictions on how long someone is held and for what

type of crime. >> we're saying if i.c.e. wants us to detain somebody on a civil detainer, we'll only do it for 24 hours and we'll only do it if the person has a proven record of violent crime. >> reporter: now the bill would also require i.c.e. to pay for the cost of detection. while district leaders don't like the program, i.c.e. see things differently. they say that the program only applies to people who have been arrested for other crimes. they also point out that 39,000 hard-core criminals have been deported. criminalers like murderers and rapists since the program began. in northwest, megan mcgrath, news4. thank you, megan. right now in alexandria, a trial is under way against a man accused of causing a d.u.i. crash that killed a little boy. police say 22-year-old victor aldana was drunk in january when he drove his car off duke street near i-395. the car hit 8-year-old brian hernandez chavez walking with

his mother. the mother recovered from her injuries. one d.c. councilmember wants to put an end once and for all to city leaders' stadium ticket tiff. jack evans has sent a budget amendment to his colleagues, proposing they split tickets to nationals park and verizon center evenly among the mayor and council members, ticket disputes among city leaders have made headlines in recent years. some council members criticized chairman kwame brown for how he handed out tickets to verizon center events last year. and in 2009 then-mayor adrian fenty refused to share baseball tickets with council members for more than a month. word of caution as you consider lunch outside as the weather gets warmer, especially you women. patio dining presents the perfect crime of opportunity. thieves can easily snatch your purse or bag hanging on the back of a chair or on the ground. d.c. police say they're getting dozens of calls each day for these types of thefts. officers say cell phone thefts are also a problem. with people leaving their phones

on friday before the severe storm. i was warning them about the nasty weather that may be heading our way and i told them all the different things they need to do to stay safe when severe weather threatens. i want to thank the principal for the invitation to the shrevewood elementary school in fairfax county. a new casino opening in our region could also bring along some traffic concerns. maryland live sits right next to anne arundel mills mall. people who live nearby say the area is also congested and the casino isn't even open yet. >> there's so many people coming to the casino and coming out, it's always hard for me to pull out. i almost got in a car accident just going out of this road. >> maryland live opens tomorrow night at 10:00. and watch your speed when you roll through the district. today is the last day you'll get only a citation from 27 new

of the man suspected of kidnapping and killing morgan harrington back in 2009. her remains turned up in a remote field near charlottesville several months after she disappeared from a metallica concert. the fbi plans to launch a billboard campaign with the new sketch. the man suspected of being the east coast rapist is making it difficult for his lawyers to proceed with his defense. attorneys for aaron thomas filed a notice of their plans to enter an insanity plea. an actual plea can't be made until thomas meets with mental health evaluators. but he is refusing to do that. a hearing is scheduled for friday. thomas is accused of attacking three teenaged girls in prince william county in 2009. he is also suspected in other assaults in maryland, connecticut and rhode island. the transportation security administration fired five agents at the fort myers airport in florida. the agency also suspended more than three dozen tsa workers and supervisors for not conducting

random security checks. all of the agents work at the southwest florida international airport. the tsa says a two-month investigation last year found agents stopped making random screenings during the late shift. >> tsa is a giant organization, it's got tens of thousands of employees. those folks are doing a very mundane, day in, day out, high-volume, high-stress job. >> the tsa says it's holding owl of its employees accountable for its actions. the agency says it will have zero tolerance for misconduct. people in fairfax county are chipping in to offer a $7500 reward to catch a person attacking animals in that county. a calf, two goats and a chicken were injured at frying pan park in herndon over memorial day weekend. a group called friends of frien pan park put up the reward money. they say it's a shame for this to happen to such a family-friendly atmosphere.

procession through the streets of london this morning. hundreds of thousands of people camped out overnight waiting for a glimpse of the queen. among them, our own doug cammer, he shows us a different side of the jubilee celebrations. >> reporter: good morning from london. nice weather, right now temperatures only around 50 degrees, a little bit cool. the clouds are expected to roll in the rain is expected to roll in. but last night, just a fantastic, fantastic night for one of the best concerts you've seen in quite some time. take a look at what we shot last night. we were in what they call hyde park, which is really london's version of central park in new york city. we were there last night with hundreds of thousands of fans, all across the country. watching on video, the concert going on at buckingham palace last night. take a look at some of the people. everybody out and about. wearing their best british garb so to speak. it's almost like for us, it would almost be like a fourth of july party happening once every ten years, that's exactly what

this is for them. the diamond jubilee celebrating the queen's 60th anniversary on the throne. simply amazing to think she's been on the throne for 60 years. everybody out there enjoying it. we were enjoying it with the fans. we got to try some great british dishes, including fish and chips and mushy peas. we tried them last night. i got to tell you, it was pretty good, actually. i'm looking forward to maybe some more mushy peas over the next couple of days. after the concert, the queen lit the first of 4,200 beacons that are around the world symbolizing this historic event. a great night for all the british here, everybody just continues to say, wow, it's great to be british. the excitement here for britain is really, really strong. it's amazing and i'm just very happy to be here. so for everybody back there in the states -- hope you're enjoying yourselves, because i know i'm enjoying myself.
