>> reporter: the biggest blow to al qaeda there in pakistan since the killing of osama bin laden more than a year ago. this was the number two. an al qaeda operative by the name of abu yahya al libi. he escaped from an afghanistanen prison and returned to pakistan to carry out or planning at least for al qaeda operations. actually, he was killed by a cia drone strike on monday, yesterday. but just last week, he had been apparently, according to pakistani officials, wounded in an earlier drone strike. so the cia was clearly focusing in on al libi. the issue here, however, is that al qaeda central there in pakistan really doesn't have the kind of organization or strength it once had to enable itself to carry out any significant

here. perhaps not so surprising to the judge who wants to see opening statements start on monday. day one of jury selection in jerry sandusky's sex abuse trial. the former penn state coach appeared subdued as he entered the courthouse. >> at one point, the judge reminded the jury pool why they were there. he said, need you to all have an open mind. this defendant is charged with the sexual abuse of children. at that point, sandusky looked down and did not make eye contact. >> reporter: today marked the beginning of what was expected to be a drawn-out narrowing process but the judge has seated six jurors by midafternoon. >> when he asked the jurors where they worked 14, indicated they are employed by or retired from penn state. then they were asked if any knew jerry personally and four people held up cards. >> reporter: sandusky faces 52 criminal counts for the alleged abuse of ten boys.

becoming a big distraction in d.c. government. more on what the chairman had to say. >> reporter: kwame brown called this press conference himself this afternoon. and he made three major points. number one, he said, that he does not plan to resign. number two, he said he didn't break any laws. number three, he said that he was concerned that this had created such a distraction. he said he would not specifically address the federal criminal investigation surrounding his 2008 campaign. he did take questions from reporters. and he said he apologized, there's been so much distraction on a day that the city council passed a major budget, that all of the reporters wanted to talk about today was kwame brown. >> i have no plans to resign. so i don't -- i have no plans at this time to resign. i don't think i broke any laws in the 2008 campaign.

i apologize. shouldn't have any distractions. they should be focused on what we're doing with health care. what we're doing with making sure our kids go to college. unfortunately, we're not doing that. i think -- i feel responsible for it. >> reporter: highlighting some of the tensions today, a reporter claimed that kwame brown shoved him into a wall this morning when he tried to ask him some questions regarding this investigation. brown admitted there had been an incident but said he didn't do anything maliciously. earlier today, the mayor had a press conference where he announced his selection for the new ethics board, naming three people. now, that is not a done deal. those three folk, including the former attorney general here in the district, those folks now have to go before the council before they can be seated.

no time frame when exactly that will happen. reporting live, news 4. somebody shot and killed a man this afternoon it it happened about 2:00. he was pronounced dead on the scene. the trial of a man accused of running down a mother and her son got under way in alexandria. aldana is facing several charges. today, prosecutors say he may have done more than just drink before that crash. >> reporter: victor aldona was allegedly drunk and drugged. police say the 22-year-old was drunk when he drove his car off

duke street near i-395 last january. police found an aerosol can in the car he was driving. prosecutors suggested on top of a blood alcohol level of .15, aldona had been huffing from the can to get high. video from a nearby cvs showed he bought the can just minutes before. it was midafternoon on january 15th when the car he was driving on busy duke street left the road and struck maria and her 8-year-old son, brian hernandez chavez, as they walked hand-in-hand along a path. brian was killed instantly. his mother suffered broken legs and a broken pelvis. eyewitness susan caronos was driving right behind aldana. she testified she watched as his car began to veer right. there was time to correct, she said, but the car continued. it went through a thick sign. i looked up and saw two bodies fly through the air. she testified she immediately stopped and went to the mother's aid. she asked for her son. she was in a panic over her son. i said the lord's prayer and she joined me in spanish. maria chavez also testified hobbling to the witness stand on a cane.

through a translator, she told the judge she had no time to react. said chavez, i woke up and i was laying on the grass and i saw the lady holding my hand and she told me not to move. i told her i wanted to see where my son was. asked the prosecutor, did you ever see your son again there? no, replied chavez. her defense attorney says they'll try to show his actions don't constitute manslaughter. said the lawyer, this case really is a tragedy. it's sad but it was an accident. this trial's expected to wrap up tomorrow. he also faces charges of drunk driving and drivie ining withou license. his trial is expected to conclude tomorrow. a possible meth lab at a hotel. they were called to the holiday inn express in elk ridge late last night. reports of a strange odor. they entered the room and arrested five men.

police say they also found other drugs and a gun in the room. nobody was hurt. votes are being cast today in an election in wisconsin. they'll decide whether the governor keeps his job. the governor is a republican, scott walker, elected only 17 months ago. his plans to slash state spending largely by denying unions the right to collective bargaining has angered democrats and labor activists. with 900,000 signatures collected in support of a recall vote. the nation divided over the approach to many problems. some experts say the outcome could help predict the presidential race. it has been a cool and cloudy june day. we could be getting more showers this week. veronica's got a look at what's going on. >> it was really cool today. it was our coolest day today. almost a month.

plan to resign and he didn't break any laws in connection with contributions to his 2008 election campaign. he made the comments today in response to questions about the ongoing ethics probes that are becoming a distraction in d.c. government. brown's statements came as mayor gray announced three pointments for the nearly formed d.c. ethics board. one person killed after a fiery crash in montgomery county. officials say a car burst into flames last night after it hit an overpass on dickerson road. witnesses say people jumped into action trying to save the people that were in that car. now our report. >> reporter: 1:00 tuesday morning. the female driver of this honda civic heading east loses control, flaming into the stone overpass, bursting into flames. >> when i saw the car, you couldn't even tell. >> reporter: one of the first people on the scene was a washington county volunteer firefighter. flames were liking the dashboard

and crawling up the ceil inside the car. the driver was pinned inside but he was able to pull the passenger out through a side window. the passenger has been identified as 23-year-old oscar armando chavez martinez of germ town. he was flown to a shock trauma center with life threatening injuries. he was not wearing a seat belt. pieces of twisted metal and charred debris still litter the road. >> just careened straight in probably. didn't slow down. >> reporter: we don't know what caused the crash. speed has been an issue here in the past. about a quarter mile, the speed limit goes from 50 miles per hour down to 30 for drivers to make it safely. the county asked for a permit to install speed cameras. the request was granted. a warning camera will be placed here on wednesday. after that will come one that tickets drivers. >> it's a tragedy, it's sad.

it could be some time before investigators determine the factors that led up to this crash. >> they're concerned about the how and the why of the crash. >> reporter: in dickerson, maryland, melissa melay, news 4. a man reported his cell phone stolenen to the police. now he's in jail accused of child sex abuse. the 27-year-old man told police a 15-year-old boy borrowed his phone, then refused to give it back. police later determined that the man was abusing the teenager and arrested him this week. the alleged incident happened last month. he is now being held without bond. at summer camp season approaches, hundreds of employees with parks and recreation are being trained to recognize the signs of sex abuse in children. the advocacy center provides a class called safe shores. it educates adults on how to

breast cancer survivor. she says she got an mri because she was concerned about her memory and that's how her doctors discovered the tumor. it's unclear whether she will undergo surgery or treatment. her rep says the tumor is not causing any symptoms and the singer is otherwise happy. a blood test can predict the chance of relapse and death in the early stages of breast cancer. about 1300 blood samples were taken from women some with breast cancer some without. the research was done at the cancer center in houston. they found women who had a particular change in their dna also had an increased chance of developing breast cancer. theshed in the medical journal "cancer research." an announcement she called a game changer. the company is taking some action to help fight childhood obesity. we're focusing on more fruits and vegetables and low fat dairy products and further

on joe w-wilfried tsonga, a loc favorite from france. in the second set, tsonga serving from the near court. getting the top seed on the run. djokovic gets the slam but can't get to that drop shot. after losing the first set, tsonga takes sets two and three. to the fourth. in a tie break. djokovic serving to even it up. that's exactly what he does. tsonga hits it into the net and we go on to a decisive fifth set. djokovic up 5-1 in the fifth. serving for the match. and that is it. djokovic. saves four match points. comes back to winning five sets to advance to the semifinal. meanwhile, djokovic will face the winner of this match. third seed of roger federer. taking on number nine seed juan martin dell pot row. we're in the second set. dell pot row looking good. the crosscourt winner here. the argentine. wow. he takes the first two sets from federer. but federer would it's too back to take it to a fifth set.
