corridor as crowds gather below. a high-end car salesman found murdered. friends wondering how somebody got into a building with such extensive security. i'm shomari stone here at maryland live. and as you can see, thousands have lined up to get inside and play the slots. i'll have that story coming up. we begin tonight with the rescue of a baby. police officers smashed a window to get to a child in a hot car at george mason university in fairfax today. in an exclusive report jackie bentsen found out the nanny had gone inside for a job interview. >> reporter: this pile of shattered safety glass is the sign of a life or death judgment call. around 2:00 p.m. george mason university police officers cory rourke, matt bravit and craig coleson were called to parking lot k by a passerby who noticed there was a baby left alone in a car. they quickly tried the doors. locked. at that hour, says news 4 meteorologist veronica johnson, temperatures inside the car

could have risen quickly to as high as 120 degrees. >> they encountered the baby. it was left in the car seat in the back. unattended. nobody around. so the officer tried opening the door. the door was locked. so what they had to do, they had to break a window of the passenger door because the baby was in the back. >> reporter: the baby did not look good. >> the officer felt the baby was hot and sweating. the investigation reveals approximately an hour. >> reporter: officers did manage to locate the person who was driving the car. they say she is a 31-year-old woman working as a nanny who brought the child to the campus with her so that she could go on a job interview. she was arrested and charged with felony child abuse. reporting from fairfax, jackie bensen, news 4. a 2-year-old boy was found wandering by himself tonight less than a mile from fedex field. police found him near garrett and morgan boulevard in landover. investigators say he had food in his hands but there weren't any adults nearby.

officers took him to the hospital. they say he's okay. a parent did arrive to pick him up, and that person is now being questioned. a cell phone camera krarmcas smoke and flames shooting from the window of a building at 14th and p streets northwest this evening. that fire broke out around 8:30. closed 14th street for some time. there was a business on the first level of that building. and living spaces on the top two floors. there were no injuries reported and no word yet on what caused this. up in new york city three men were found shot to death in a car near columbia university this evening. police say the then were in their 20s or 30s, not believed to be students there. they believe the shooting happened in the car. they say because there were no bullet holes or broken glass. columbia university sent out a campus-wide e-mail and text alert to students and staff. police in montgomery county tonight want to know who killed a man inside an apartment building with an extensive security system. officers found 34-year-old eric samoa dead from a gunshot wound

in his apartment on east-west highway last night. samoa worked as a car salesman at the manhattan auto dealership in bethesda. when he was missing work for two days, a long-time friend and co-worker called the police. >> he's always a good guy, and he always treated me fairly and my friends, family, and customers more importantly. i mean, but he was a good guy. and you know, he -- dedicated and fiercely loyal. i consider him a true friend. and it's a shame. >> investigators say there is no sign of forced entry at samoa's apartment. former d.c. council chairman kwame brown will head to not one but two courtrooms tomorrow after being hit with a new charge today. prosecutors slapped him with a campaign finance charge that's related to spending from a re-election fund. prosecutors say that spending largely went unreported. this new charge is a misdemeanor less serious than the felony bank fraud charge that forced him to resign last night. that charge carries a maximum

30-year sentence. today mayor vincent gray, who faces his own campaign violation probe, tried to focus on the positive. >> it's not to be unexpected when situations like this occur that they would probably dominate the headlines. they would dominate the news. but for those who choose to go beyond it i think he's doing extremely well. >> the federal charge against brown accuse him of overstating his income on applications to secure a home loan and buy a boat. he's expected to plead guilty and make a statement. you can't play table games at the new maryland live casino but just getting in is turning out to be a roll of the dice. one night after thousands were turned away the second night is turning out to be much the same. shomari stone in ann arundel county. >> reporter: there are a lot of people lined up outside maryland live. these folks tell me they have waited at least an hour just to get to the front of the line. they're smiling as though it's black friday. take a quick walk with me, jim and folks watching this.

let's go through this door and you can see that there are a lot of folks in here. it's not as packed as it was last night, but there are a lot of people coming in here, and they tell me that their maximum goal is to come here and win hundreds of thousands, well, some folks hopefully, of dollars. >> 20, 40, 60. >> reporter: this man won $4,000. triple 7s on the $25 slot machine. >> how does that make you feel? >> pretty good. pretty good. >> reporter: it's the second big night at maryland live. and thousands wait in line to gamble on the 3,200 slots and on electronic table games. this is the state's largest casi casino. you have the winners. >> it's so exciting. >> reporter: the losers. how much have you lost? >> 200. >> reporter: and some folks who live nearby frustrated with the casino's traffic around arundel mills mall. mary lives around the corner in these apartments. >> i just don't want it to take twice as long to get places at night. >> reporter: nor man 10,000 waited in line for the grand opening, and casino officials

are expecting big numbers tonight. this woman says the traffic is worth the economic impact. >> i recognize how it can generate jobs and how it can also do a lot for the whole area. >> reporter: maryland live officials expect the casino to boost the local economy, generating $60 million in annual spending on goods and services. businesses like this nail salon across the street expect to cash in on the added foot traffic. >> i would hope it would bring more people to our business. >> reporter: 1,500 people will work here. casino officials tell us the state has hit the jackpot, receiving an estimated $400 million in tax revenue to support local schools. >> the state is statutorily required to move the money into the school system. >> excellent. number one casino. >> reporter: now, you can see that guy is obviously happy. along with a lot of folks here. now, just to let you know that this place is also open on the weekends. that might be a really good time to come here. you can come early in the

today the prosecutor dropped those charges, but the family wanted the case to go to trial. >> we were hoping that the judge would rule on our motion to dismiss, which was that there is actually no law in virginia that deals with tardiness. >> denicore says he plans to ask the virginia attorney general to clarify that law. a psychiatric patient in fairfax county has been charged with murder. police say 24-year-old mark shilor stabbed another patient at a facility off old meadow lane in mclean. a witness says the two had been arguing about money. that facility where the two were treats patients with mental illnesses including schizophrenia and bipolar disorder. we got an inside look today at how the u.s. state department handled the wikileaks crisis. two state department employees testified during a pretrial hearing for army private bradley manning, who's accused of leaking more than 250,000

classified documents to wikileaks in 2009. the director of the agency's operations center explained how the department worked nonstop to limit damage from those leaks. manning's attorneys hope this testimony will help prove that damage was minimal. the transportation security administration could be in for some big cuts. this comes after a hearing on capitol hill today. lawmakers suggested to the administrator, john pistole, that the agency could do without 30% of its workforce. all of this comes a week after five security officers were fired for not conducting random screenings at the airport in fort myers, florida. pist pistole said the agency needs all of its workers. arlington national cemetery is getting awn precedented new smartphone app to guide users through the more than 250,000 grave sites and to provide details on burials and other cemetery events. it comes as arlington updates its recordkeeping system in the

wake of finding hundreds of grave sites that were misidentified. this new app comes out in the fall. it now appears that voters will get to decide whether to repeal maryland's same-sex marriage law. the state board of elections has validated more than 70,000 signatures on a petition for a same-sex marriage referendum. that's according to an unofficial tally on its website. that number is well above the 55,000 needed to put it on a ballot in november. the petition still needs to be certified. supporters of the law, meanwhile-r gearing up to defend it. a group known as marylanders for marriage equality says it has hired more staffers and opened new offices, one in silver spring, another in baltimore. there are now more teenagers smoking pot than cigarettes. that's according to a government survey that found that 23% of high school students admitted to recently smoking marijuana while 18% said they had smoked cigarettes. an earlier survey by the university of michigan found more teenagers apparently see

well, this video led to a new york city transit operator's suspension today. a rider says he caught this operator reading a newspaper cover to cover while manning a speeding train. it allegedly happened during the morning rush on the harlem line yesterday. according to the man who taped it, the engineer barely paid attention to his surroundings and it sparked outrage among other riders. >> how could he neglect the safety of his passengers? >> for a person to feel like they can just do that and get away with it, it's kind of scary. >> new york transit officials say it is unacceptable for workers to read anything while operating a train. some good news for travelers in washington here. united airlines is now offering daily nonstop flights from dulles straight to hawaii. it becomes the only local flight to honolulu that does not include a layover. the flight is 10 1/2 hours long going west. an hour shorter coming back this

way because you have those tailwinds behind you. the special olympics maryland summer games, they begin tomorrow. and today employees of the charles county sheriff's office hit the pavement in a torch run raising money for those games. marines from the naval surface warfare center in indian head led the runners through the county. opening ceremonies are tomorrow night at towson university. first lady michelle obama satisfied her sweet tooth today in northern virginia. she stopped by mom's apple pie company. the first lady was treated to an impromptu violin solo from 6-year-old sidney trap of fredricksburg. mrs. obama then bought two pies before heading back to the white house. earlier in the day the first lady had spoken at a campaign rally at vfw post 1503 in dale city. well, don't you know six flags america unveiled its newest thrill ride today. the apocalypse: the last stand. it's maryland's first and only

stand-up roller coaster. that ride features hair-raising turns, sudden drops, plenty of shooting fire and explosions. reaching speeds of 55 miles an hour. so we decided we'd put richard jordan -- he's new. he's young. we figured he could take it. he got a front row seat. >> oh! i'm taking a beating. >> i'm ready to go home now. >> richard rode that coaster, by the way, with elizabeth ringus and her 9-year-old daughter calista. six flags hopes this new coaster will be part of a new start following the company's recent emergence from chapter 11 bankruptcy protection. >> let's go. >> let's go. >> i'm down with that. forget this. let's go. >> yeah, i guess they frown on doing this now, don't they? >> we do it anyhow. >> you're all strapped in there. i don't think your hands are holding you in. >> school's out for so many

counties starting tomorrow. that coaster comes just in time. we're talking about showers that have faded away. now this sometime showery weather system that we've had around the area, it's going to be moving out and it's going to be replaced by something that's really going to be warming us up. back out there on storm 4 radar the shower's gone. little residual showers around lorain. points west of us. those have pretty much faded. you've got one big complex down south. this around 250, 64 headed toward richmond, virginia. that's where the lightning is right here. in some of the bigger rains. moving away from our area. in terms of rainfall today, sharpsburg, maryland picking up .4 inches of rain. howard county, columbia. .63 of an inch of rain. andrews picking up almost a quarter of an incomof rain. now again our pattern's going to flip. as we go from april light conditions, we've been in the 70s. a lot of folks really liking it because it's been so comfortable. but now as we get into the 90s next couple of days as we move

through the weekend it's going to be a little uncomfortable, a little sticky. 67 right now with a west wind at six miles per hour. your temperatures throughout the area, we are in the 60s and we're going to drop to about 55 to 60 degrees by tomorrow morning. 63 right in d.c. so some showers. those are moving away. high pressure and sunshine for the day tomorrow. and even more sunshine for saturday. any showers should stay way up there over the maryland line. that's the way it's looking right now. it's not going to be as cool then tomorrow morning. we'll be starting out between 52 and 61 degrees. tomorrow afternoon sunshine. terrific weather coming our way. a little breezy. but again, pretty nice. 79 to 85 degrees with a northwest wind at 10 to 15. here's a look at your four-day forecast. from 85 degrees tomorrow, close to 90 on saturday, 91 degrees expected on sunday. again, turning a bit humid for the second half of our weekend. we've got some showers, isolated showers and storms coming up

expected to give brian banks a workout. banks is a former high school football star who went to prison for a crime he did not commit. he spent more than five years in jail. after a childhood friend falsely accused him of rape. with the help of the california innocence project a judge threw out the conviction last month, cleared him of all charges. last night banks was on "the tonight show." today he worked out with the seattle seahawks. but as noted, tomorrow he'll be here. redskins going to give him a shot. >> a lot of people rooting for him. i think he's going to have shots with several teams. and he'll probably catch on somewhere. >> let's hope he does somewhere. he deserves it. talking a little baseball. it's an afternoon game for the nationals. and there will be no sweep for the nats. r.a. dickey took care of that. and now an achy back to keep bryce harper out of his first major league baseball game. that according to nats' manager davey johnson. according to bryce he says he's just fine.

the nats' bats didn't give chien-ming wang much help against the mets. serving up the cookie to lucas duda. all bryce harper can do is watch one. two-run home run for duda. his tenth of the season. and the mets take a 2-0 lead. at the plate the nationals absolutely baffled by knuckleballer r.a. dickey. bryce harper swinging at that one. dickey was dominant with eight strikeouts on the day. top nine now. 3-0 mets. mike gonzales pitching for the nats. david wright goes to right field. bryce harper tries to make the catch. a diving effort there. he doesn't make the catch. but he also lands hard on his stomach. and you can see harper going down here for a few minutes. he would get up and be just fine after taking a couple of steps. it was that kind of day for the nats, though. they lose 3-1. here's davey on harper. >> when he dove for the ball, i though the just knocked the wind out of himself. and that predominantly was the
