another, scratched from the belmont and will never race again. good afternoon. i'm pat lawson. >> first, to two breaking stories here in the washington area. drama at reagan national airport this afternoon. four people were pulled off a flight for acting suspiciously before takeoff. this happened on a delta regi regional jet headed to detroit. officials took everyone off the plane, rescreened the passengers and rechecked all of the luggage. the four passengers acting suspiciously were taken off the flight and after a long delay, everyone else was allowed back on the plane and it took off for detroit. also, breaking news involving former d.c. chair brown. he admitted that he forged names on a mortgage loan application and overstated his income by tens of thousand of dollars. as part of the plea deal, he resigned from his council seat.

he could be sentenced up to six months in prison. after the heared today, he was remorseful and choked up when addressing reporters. >> i want to apologize from the bottom of my heart. to all those that i have let down. to the people of this great city. my neighbors and friends. the mayor, my council colleagues. government officials and employees. of the government who worked so hard to serve our city. >> a few hours later, brown also pleaded guilty in d.c. superior court to a separate misdemeanor charge related to his 2008 campaign. prosecutors are about to hold a press conference detailing those

a former culpeper police officer is free on $100,000 bond after pleading not guilty to killing a woman in a church parking lot. daniel harmon entered the plea in court today. a grand jury indicted for for killing patricia cook in february. she was unarmed sitting in her vehicle when he shot her at close range. a fire at a new restaurant in prince george's restaurant could delay the the opening. firefighters put out the fight at jersey mike's. shop was set to open this month. not clear what caused the fire. wall street ended the week ahead, creating a four-day positive streak. the trading was bowed by positive news out of europe. the nasdaq was up 25 and the s&p

500 closed up ten. now to the late es in the race for the white house. six words from president obama caused a shake uptoday. he said quote, the private sector is doing fine, unquote. mitt romney and other republicans caught the ball and ran with it. here's steve handlesman. >> reporter: president obama made his explosive claim to reassure the nation and take credit for creating 4.3 million private sector jobs. >> over 800,000 was this year alone. the private sector's doing fine. >> reporter: republicans gleefully pounced. >> are you kidding? did he see the job numbers that came out last week? the private sector is not doing fine. >> reporter: the auto industry, u.s. manufacturing, was strong in may. but construction jobs were way down. they're prooif sector. the public sector was worse. teachers, firefighters and cops, laid off.

the president's point was to blame congress for rejecting his bill to help states and cities. >> if congress had passed it in full, we'd be on track to have a million more americans working this year. keep in mind that the private sector has been hiring at a solid pace over the last 27 months. >> reporter: mitt romney was in iowa when he heard about his gift from the president. >> he said the private sector is doing fine. is he really that out of touch? these comments he's making just suggest someone who doesn't understand what's happening in the country he has been elected to lead. >> the economy's not doing fine. >> reporter: back at the white house, damage control. >> the economy needs to be strengthened. that's why i had a press conference. >> reporter: republicans, say the president, ought to offer more ideas about how to keget people back to work and stop playing what he called political games. i'm steve handlesman, nbc news, washington. it's a gorgeous friday

strong rip currents along the gulf coast creating dangerous sbiming conditions. lifeguards along the gulf have pulled dozens of people out of the water since yesterday. they say they've had 20 rescues today in gulf shores, alabama, alone. they've called in off-duty lifeguards to help out. an international fleet of tall ships sailed into the port in southeastern virginia. more than 100 ships docked in norfolk and thousands of spectators, many on their own boat, watched the parade of ships. many ships will be available for public tours. next stop? baltimore, that's on tuesday to mark the war of 1812, the buy seven he oh the by centennial.

ten years. >> and why is it so important with busy schedules to still get together? you guys get together quite a few times a month? >> definitely, stress relief, definitely. busy schedules and busy lives and we find it important to try to stay as detected as possible because we're always running around in different directions and the kids are best friends and as they're getting older they go to different schools. they're off in middle school. some are still in elementary school so we feel it's important to dweep them together. >> you told me when you guys were a bit younger you would come out here and stay all night? >> during the day we would set up up here because the kids couldn't be out here by themselves. so the moms, we were all sitting here on the corner and that's when we kind of deemed it "the happy corner." >> thanks a lot, jackie. the forecast here for the evening, our temperatures right now, they're in the 80s across the area. 84 degrees in d.c. right now. not a cloud in the sky, right? it's a pretty nice day.

there's a few clouds but that area of high pressure will in, if in for the weekend we'll be pretty much cloud-free. we'll warm up and we're talking about sticky weather around the area. now, the only spots we have to watch is on saturday. just to the north, delaware beach. the possibility of a shower and tonight at 9:00 p.m., we've got the international space station that's makes its from the southwest to the northeast so we're clear, we're mild tonight and then tomorrow morning, 59 to 67. with a high temperature tomorrow, 85 to 90 degrees. your four-day forecast, jackie says, yuk. 91 on sunday. probably around 90 in so many locations coming up on saturday. and, of course, the one thing that we're not used to because it was a cooler than average week is the heat and humidity together. >> we're not crazybility the humidity but we like the heat. >> and we like kensington so we'll have more from the backyard weather come to you throughout the hour.

news out of california, lindsay lohan is reportedly in the hospital this afternoon after being in a car accident. tmz reporting that lohan's porsche is totalled. she apparently hit the back of an 18-wheeler. tmz reporting that lindsay lohan is hospitalized but not seriously injured. we'll have more information as we get it. the beauty queen who says the miss usa pageant was fixed

is standing by her story. this time last week, she was preparing to represent pennsylvania in the biggest competition of her career. >> now she's battling it out with the miss universe organization which announced a few minutes ago it's filing suit against her. nbc mara has the story. >> she didn't win the miss usa title. she didn't even make the final round. >> the fun, the lights. >> reporter: but it's the now former miss pennsylvania who's taking the spotlight and the heat after claiming that sunday's miss usa pageant was rigged. on her facebook page, she says that another contestant spotted a list of the top five contestants before the show even started. >> congratulations to our top five. >> reporter: and that list, she claims, matched the top five who were later announced live on the air. monday night, she didn't make the top 16, resigned as miss pennsylvania writing on her facebook page, quote, i can no

longer be fill updated in any way with an organization i consider to be fraudulent, lacking in morals, inconsistent and in many ways, trashy. lies, says donald trump. blasting her claims tuesday here on "today." >> the person that supposedly told her, the list, she said she was told by another person. that person now totally denies it. and she said that there is no list and i've never seen a list. >> trump, who coowns the miss universe organization with nbc universal says it's just sour grapes and threatened to sue her for defaming his competition. >> i did see her for about a second. i never felt she had a chance and all this is a byer's remorse. >> trump later said that she had 24 hours to issue a written apology or he would go ahead with a lawsuit. she is a self-described conservative who wants to get a theology degree. pa subsequent officials say her real beef involves their

under parental supervision. right now children under 13 can't have social media pages. some kids use the service with their parent's approval but the decision sparked a debate about mom's and dads. many of them don't want their children exposed to inappropriate content and anothers say facebook is a great way for parents to stay connected with their kids but rules have to be put in place. >> i think it's a great way to recreate the village and help parents stay connected with their kids. somebody under the age of 13, the parent has to hold the master account so that the kid, they get to see everything many the kid's feed every time. >> dr. walsh believes 14 would be a better age to grant kids access to the social media website but she says in the end it comes down to knowing your child. facebook hasn't officially commented on the possible policy change. it's going to be a busy and a crowded saturday downtown on the mall. as girl scouts gather with family and friends to rock the mall. some 200,000 people are expected for the concert and events

it is illegal to cover or obstruct the name of the state on your license plate. dk d.c. dmv said clear coverings can obstruct a name which is a problem for red-light camera tickets and fines range from $25 in virginia to $55 in maryland for obstructing the statute on your license plate. if you cover up your entire license plate in d.c., get in, a $500 fine. so keep those license plates clear. they like to be able to read them at all times. >> yes, those cameras like to read them. >> and the police do, too. our next question comes via e-mail from a viewer, gwenn. her mother passed away but she keeps on getting her marketing mailings and catalogs in her mother's name. she wants to know how to get the mail stopped. >> the direct marketing association gave us this answer. it temperatures us in 2005, it created a deceased do not contact list. which does help companies and nonprofits remove those names

a mother of four helped police uncover a million-dollar crime wave because somebody stole her baby stroller. rob stafford has more on how this working mom in chicago took matter into her own hands. >> that's the guy? >> yee. >> the man in this surveillance footage stole her stroller off her front porch. >> did this thief have any idea who he was messing with? >> i don't think so. >> a married mour of four, reported the theft to police. then heard about a craigslist post for a used stroller just like hers.

so she set up a sting and met the seller in a grocery store parking lot. the police arrived and made an arrest after he showed up with the goods. >> what did he say. t to her neighbors to be extra . vigilant. but then strange things began to happen. bills for pornographic magazines arrived, takeout food was delivered late at night. and that wasn't all. >> the male prostitute. >> showed up at your house? >> someone was using the internet to harass her family. later, police involved in the case were maliciously smeared on various internet sites. one post accused an officer of dealing drugs. another of molesting children. and the thefts on chicago's northside continues. >> it was frustrating to see a neighborhood that we loved so much and so invested in fall victim to petty crimes. >> then a lead. security cameras caught this man walking into an apartment building. he appears to be talking on the cell phone as he scans the lobby. grabs delivered pa kamgs and walks right out the front door.

the prosecutors say the trail of evidence, including the internet address used to harass tia led to a townhome in this upscale chicago neighborhood and what police found inside was beyond anything anyone on the force or tia expected. >> when they opened up the garage and the curtains to his kitchen and dining room, i was shocked. >> among the items investigators recovered, some 200 bicycles. 200 strollers. 100 sets of golf clubs. also recovered, 87 garage door openers labeled with the corresponding addresses. it all prosecutors say more than a million dollars in stolen property. >> it was like a scene out of hoarders. they were just all these items, stacked on top of one another. and items, many times, that were still in the original package that was intended to the victim. >> he now faces 24 felony indictments for burglary, cyberstalking and other internet

line, quamy brown lied to enrich himself and he got caught. quamy brown hurry to federal court in downtown washington but it took only 20 minutes for him to plead guilty to a felony charge of bank fraud which included falsifying mortgage loan documents to receive tens of thousands of dollars in extra cash. court documents show brown changed a 3 to an 8 to claim income of $85,000 instead of $35,000. forged the name of an employer. and among other things, bought a speedboat named "bullet proof" with the extra money. once a rising star in local d.c. politics and chairman of the council until he resigned on wednesday, brown lost his composure while apologizing to the public after his felony plea. >> i want to apologize. from the bottom
