in this crash. two people died at that scene. rescuers took two others to the hospital. this morning police are trying to sort out a very strange situation. a man drives an suv right into a downtown office building. it happened off connecticut avenue near the metro station. jackie benson explains why this case may be more than just bad driving. >> reporter: the red jeep patriot smashed through a huge plate glass window and plowed 30 feet into the lobby of 1050 connecticut avenue northwest before coming to a stop. d.c. police officers who had been nearby quickly realized this was more than driver error. sources tell news4 the man was behaving erratically and there was a strong odor of gasoline on him and inside the vehicle. the driver appeared disorientated and was taken away by ambulance. fbi agents from the joint terrorism task force responded to the scene. so did d.c. police chief. >> at this point it looks like

he intentionally drove into the building. our initial investigation has raised concerns for us so we want to make sure that -- people don't normally drive into a building intentionally like this. we want more information. >> reporter: the building has steel covered security pylons outside. a witness leaving a nearby gym when it happened said the driver steered his vehicle between them. >> after he pulled back and he goes inside. >> reporter: police rerouted traffic along connecticut avenue but the north metro station remained open. the driver of the vehicle was taken to a local hospital. so far no charges have been filed. jackie benson, news4. prosecutors are fighting back to uphold the verdict in the uva lacrosse murder trial. lawyers for george huguely are challenging the guilty verdict

saying their client didn't receive a fair trial. in february a jury found huguely guilt of second-degree murder for the killing of uva lacrosse player yeardley love. a judge will hear the challenge later this month. huguely is scheduled to be sentenced in august. kwame brown will now have to wait until september to learn how much time he'll spend behind bars. the former d.c. council member pleaded guilty to two separate charges yesterday. a felony charge for overstating his income by tens of thousands of dollars and forging signatures. a misdemeanor charge for underreporting campaign spending. brown spoke to reporters and choked up while apologizing to residents of the district. >> to all of those that i have let down. to the people of this great city. i sincerely regret the pain that this has caused each of you.

>> brown maintains he never misused or stole campaign funds. he faces fines and up to six months in prison for each charge. u.s. attorneys for d.c. and maryland will lead a pair of criminal investigation into possible national security leaks. attorney general eric holder appointed two to the investigations. recent information was leaked about a possible terrorist kill list and cyberattacks against iran's nuclear program. president obama denied that his white house team is the source of these leaks. democrats and republicans are both calling for hearings on the leaks. the white house is doing some serious damage control over a comment president obama made about the state of the economy. >> the private sector is doing fine. >> the president said that during a brief press conference yesterday. he later clarified that the private sector has made progress adding jobs and slowly recovering. mitt romney and other

republicans did not waste any time blasting president obama saying he does not understand the concerns of the public. >> he said the private sector is doing fine. he said the private sector is doing fine. is he really that out of touch? >> did he see the jobs numbers that came out last week? the private sector is not doing fine. >> when clarifying his comments, president obama pointed to the 800,000 plus jobs added just this year and more than 4 million in the past two years. according to a new poll, conservative republicans are not keen on virginia governor bob mcdonnell as the vice presidential nominee. a poll had mcdonnell at less than 2% of the vote. runw r runaway winner was marco rubio. chris christie got 14% of the

welcome back. bad luck for a florida man who bought a cell phone for the first time at 49 years old. he ended up getting the old phone number of george zimmerman. he's the neighborhood watch captain charged with second-degree murder in the shooting death of 17-year-old trayvon martin. junior guy told the orlando sentinel he bought the phone from team mobile. a lawyer now has the phone. t-mobile offered him a credit and retired the cell phone number.

a judge refused to dismiss counts against the army private that helped wikileaks. he's accused of stealing thousands of classified documents and leaking them to the public. manning's defense team argued the government used big language in some charges. the man believe to be the east coast rapist will not receive a second mental health evaluation. a judge in manassas denied the request. a previous evaluation determined thomas was faking a mental illness. he's accused of attacking women up and down the east coast from 1997 to 2009 including incidents in maryland and virginia. the wife of former pitcher roger clemens admits she received an injection of human growth hormone. she testified at her husband's perjury trial yesterday and said his former trainer injected her

in the year 2000. she told the jury she did it after reading about the possible health benefits of hgh and that her husband was upset when he found out. roger clemens is accused of lying to congress about his use of performance enhancing drugs. new this morning, some lucky shoe collectors are now the proud owners of the latest must-have shoes. sneaker heads waited in line all night including a shoe star in northeast d.c. hoping to snag a pair of a shoe of a collaboration between nike and kanye west retails for $245 but there have been pairs sold online for thousands of dollars. >> for some waiting in line for hours of shoes it may be worth it. some are resorting to other sinister tactics. one d.c. teen says he was held up at gun point two days ago for his nike air jordans. the boy didn't want to show his face on camera. he couldn't believe he was robbed over a pair of shoes.

right now a major closure for drivers in virginia. part of i-395 is shut down at the beltway between 52a and 57b as part of reconstruction for the beltway express lanes project. the work should be finished by 7:00 this morning. i emphasize should. the news is not good for metro riders this weekend. the agency working on four lines. trains are not running between east falls church and west falls church on the orange line. you have to take a bus between those stations. there's also track work on the blue, red, and green lines this weekend. today thousands of expected in dupont circle for the annual capital pride parade. this was the scene at the parade a few years ago. there's plenty of food and live music for everybody. traffic could be an issue for drivers in the area. the parade winds down 17th street and ends up at logan

when mitt romney says "planned parenthood we're gonna get rid of that." played that they probably regret. romney is saying he'll deny women the birth control and cancer screenings they depend on. when romney says "do i believe the supreme court should overturn roe v. wade? yes." he's saying he'll deny women the right to make their own medical decisions and when his campaign can't say whether he'd support equal pay protections. today. 90 plus starting tomorrow and rain chances back by middle of next week. we'll talk about that with the seven day. >> looking forward to it. >> okay. >> thanks, chuck. we're following breaking news this morning on the beltway. maryland state police investigating a deadly accident near the wilson bridge. that accident shut down the local lanes of the outer loop for several hours. troopers say a tractor-trailer and two other cars were involved in this crash. two people died at that scene. rescuers took two other people to the hospital. d.c. police are investigating a man's death while in their custody. four officers were called to p street in southwest yesterday afternoon to help mental health officials. when they got there, police say 38-year-old anthony chambers was combative and assaulted officials. officers subdued chambers and put him in handcuffs. that's when investigators say chambers lost consciousness and died at the hospital. the four officers are now on administrative leave during the investigation. a few seniors at herndon high school won't get to walk

across the stage at graduation because of what could have been a dangerous prank. school officials say the teens poured baby oil on a school staircase and then pulled the fire alarm. the school suspended those students involved and banned the three seniors from walking at graduation next thursday. some feel the punishment does not fit the crime. >> what ifs because we had teachers that were pregnant in the school and kids that were disabled and had crutches and stuff but honestly, at the end of the day nobody got hurt. >> some classmates started a twitter campaign in efforts of getting administrators to reverse that punishment. an unusual incident onboard a flight out of reagan national. a plane ready to take out returned to the gate because the flight crew reported four passengers acting suspiciously. a witness says as the plane was taxiing, two of the men got up and one went to the front of the bathroom and other went to the back. federal agents detained those passengers, questioned them and

later let them continue on their trip. federal health officials are working to help out 9/11 first responders now suffering from cancer. firefighters and police officers were exposed to toxic ash during the attacks. now more than a decade later, they are getting sick in record numbers developing many different types of cancer. yesterday lawmakers proposed adding 50 types of cancer to the james zadroga compensation fund which helped those that got sick from ground zero. >> there are many people out there that are sick. we're all not looking to get rich. we're looking to cover our bills. >> new york senator chuck schumer was one of the proponents of this expansion. he says it's the least the government can do to show their commitment to brave men and women who helped out during the attacks. today in prince george's county, achieving an american dream can be that much easier for a lucky winner. the county's department of housing and community

development is hosting a housing fair and house lottery today. prequalified candidates can win 5% of the down payment and closing costs. the home offered in the drawing is a four bedroom two bath house. its asking price now $190,000. today's housing fair is at the wayne k. curry sports learning complex. it starts at 9:00 this morning and runs until 3:00 this afternoon. today prince george's county police are holding a gift cards for guns event. all you have to do is turn in an unloaded firearm to get a gift card for up to $100. the gun doesn't even have to work to be eligible for that card. the event goes from 10:00 to 2:00 at the first baptist church of highland park. prince george's county officers are looking for three men who they say pulled off three car jackings within an hour. but they never managed to steal a car and surveillance video

could help put them behind bars. news4 pat collins has the story. >> june 3, three armed men and three car jackings in less than 23 minutes. when you hear the whole story, you understand why these suspects are more like the three stooges and why police hope this surveillance video will lead to their arrest before someone gets hurt. car jacking number one, stuart lane, 11:23 at night. three armed men, they take a man's cell phone. they take his car keys. they take his toyota car. it's a clean getaway. except for one thing. gas. you see that toyota car didn't have any gas. it was running on vapor and here on allentown road it came to an unexpected stop. those three would-be car jackers

bailed and continued on on foot. car jacking number two. old branch avenue. seven minutes later three blocks away. those three armed men approach a man in a jeep. that man, that driver yells i'm a cop you better move on. one of the suspects said my bad. my bad. they all back off. and walk away. car jacking number three. at the hanger club a half block away. they have surveillance video of this one. a woman in a dodge charger pulls up to the drive-through window and begin to makes a purchase. the suspects come in on both sides. even manage to get a door of the car open but when the woman gets wise to what's going on, she hits the gas and drives off. >> it's incredible that we have three suspects involved in three different car jackings in a

maryland could become the first state in the country to ban bumper pads in cribs. maryland's health department recommended the ban yesterday. the department started investigating the bumper pad dangers last year and determined

they can suffocate or strangle babies. if the ban passes, it would go into effect june of 2013. two decades ago news4 told you about a baby. >> he suffered severe injuries from shaken baby syndrome but now he's beating the odds. julie careycaught up with the baby and his family as they mark a major milestone. >> sean on his last day of high school. his trademark yelp of enthusiasm echos through the halls at southern high as high fives come his way. >> no way you can stop me. you can put every positive word on sean and it would match him perfectly. >> reporter: 20 years ago they weren't sure their baby would survive. at 8 months old he was violently shaken by a baby sitter. seen here at 16 months, he was trying to learn to crawl all over again.

one lane of the outer loop is still closed. maryland state police are investigating a deadly accident close to the wilson bridge there. the outer loop had been shut down for several hours. troopers say three vehicles were involved here. a tractor-trailer and two other cars they say one of the drivers was speeding, hit the other car and then slammed into that tractor-trailer. two people died at the scene. rescuers took two others to the
