meantime, it's been a rough week for president obama, his attorney general last night, he's launching an investigation that's putting the president under questioning. the private sector is, quote, doing fine. we'll have a live report from the white house in just a moment. then the horse heartbreak. the horse everyone's talking about, i'll have another is out of the stakes. and a surprise. owners of a favorite horse is announcing his retirement. we'll get the inside story of what happened. it's been less than a week since the miss usa pageant. it's not on the winner. it's on allegations that the beauty contest is rigged. 2k07b . but we want to begin with possible leaked classified information.

nbc's mike vuiiqueira is live wh more. good morning. >> good morning, lester. that's whats with said. a leak of classified information to make the president look good. a kill list of terrorists personally approved by the president to go after these terrorists in drone strikes in the middle east. another outlining a so-called cyber war against iran that's personally approved by the president. there's been an outcry on chile, principally from the republican saying the leaks had to be intentional and come from senior sources. yesterday or late last night the attorney general eric holder announced he's appointing two u.s. attorneys hereby in the district of columbia and maryland. he sharply refutes any suggestion that his administration was involved in the leaks. >> the notion that my white house would purposely release

classified national security information is offensive. it's wrong. you know, people, i think, need to have a better sense of how i approach this office and how the people around me here approach this office. >> and, lester, even after that, the chairman, mike rogers, a republican from michigan said it's clear that these leaks came from a senior level of the classified intelligence community. lester? >> mike, those comments by the president came during the same news conference n which he talked about the economy and made some comments about the state of private business that really has sent off a firestorm. tell us about it. >> reporter: yeah, ignited a fairstor

firestorm, you're absolutely right. it was two weeks ago there was a slowing of economic growth. another session on the horizon. the president, defending his reputation ended with this. he said the private sector is doing just fine. well, republicans inclaugd mitt romney who said, quote, he's out of touch, john baner, all the vii leaders chiming in on twitter across cable television through the course of the day. by mid afternoon the president used a photo op in the oval office with the lead ore the philippines to clarify his position. he said the economy is not fine. lester. >> john, thank you. john harwood and andrew ross sorkin of "squawk box" on cnbc.

what's worse, the fact that stuff got out or that it might be used for political gain? >> i think ultimately is the greater danger if anyone with show compromised national security or adverse effects of these disclosures. it's certainly not what the president wanted. it's certainly a very serious charge and the republicans are making it with strong conviction, but i think the president has got to count on the in fact this investigation is not going to show an actual compromise of what u.s. national security efforts are attempting to accomplish. >> let's turn the conversation back to the economic questions. the comments that the economy is doing fine got him into hot water, as we noted. but to some extent, is that partially true. are companies sitting on cash and not hiring? >> to put it in context, the president is says when you look at private sector jobs, there has been growth. last month, for example, 82,000

jobs in the private sector. where was it lost? in the public sector. since the end of the recession, we got 3 million new private sector losses. and 600,000 job losses. in that context, he's right. having said that, we are still in a world of hurt. we're living in afternoon 8.2% unemployed world. >> john, there's a new cnn poll out there. when you think of his comment about the private sector, is that poorly timed for him? >> sure. and mitt romney's had that advantage consistently in polling. it shows at least at this point the attacks the president has made on mitt romney's private sector background have not debilitated him. they're so shielding for the president in that survey that shows by 17 percentage points americans think barack obama is better equipped to help the

class. the president is also helped by the fact that people understand that he's been talking and dealing with the economy for three years, but obviously from the fact that the president came out in the afternoon and tried to walk those comments back, the white house saw it as a significant political problem. >> andrew, it reveals americans are less pessimistic but does it mean they're not optimistic? >> there's not a new sense of optimism. i think what's handed, we're trying to forget what happens in 2008 so we're a little less pessimistic, but the idea that we're having people wanting to invest in the market, some of the numbers in the survey will shock you. some who thing they can't invest because they think it's still rigged. one fif oskt the people think you can't invest in the market because you're not an expert. >> all right. andrew, john, thanks very much. now here's tamron. >> thank you.

horse racing fans are disappointed a day after kentucky derby and preakness winner i'll have another is scratched. it means for another year there will be no triple crown winner. nbc's jay gray is at belmont park. jay, good morning. >> reporter: good morning to you. beautiful morning out here at belmont park, some of the horses taking their final trapg runs. noticeably missing from that group obviously is the favorite, i'll have another. it was after his lap around the oval yesterday morning that trainers noticed swelled in the left front leg. doctors described it as tendonitis. that was enough for the trainer doug o'neill to pull the horse from the race. now, it's not the role that so many hoped to see i'll have another on. the horse will be on and, in fact, it will lead the post

this week. aymon joins us. >> they described the scene as a horrific crime. all of this, you think, would deter the military, but that's been the opposite case. they're reporting that they're continuing with assaults, shelling the city relentlessly last night and they say 15 people have been killed as the syrian military continue to cast assaults. there have been reports of explosions and fights and indications that the fighting was reaching the capital for the first time since the uprising began. mandy? >> thank you very much. the district of columbia police are investigating what they say was the intentional crash of a suv into a dwroun

building. there are reports that the vehicle had been stolen and the vehicle and driver had been doused with gasoline. no one was hurt except the driver who has minor injuryings. people in central colorado are cleaning up after a night of violent storms. they have tied up a system that's been bringing driving winds and floods over the past few days. a tornado that swept through southeast wyoming damaged five homes and damaged more. this was captured on tape as it cut through platte county. prince philip was released from the hospital this morning just as he's about to celebrate his 91st birthday. he was treat for a bladder infection that prevent him from participating in some of the queen's royal jubilee. no one was sleeping last

gutierrez out of atlanta. >> reporter: the biggest cluster of the e. coli infection is in the atlanta area. five cases right in the cdc's backyard that wi know it comes from a single source. we don't know where. we've not been able to identify a particular food or environmental exposure. >> reporter: today the number of cases grew, a total of 14 in six states. so far at least three people have been hospitalized. one girl, just 21 months old, died in new orleans. the cdc and local health festivals are scrambling to find the source of the outbreak. it's hard to link those. >> this is hardly substantially above normal. anything above two cases we consider an outbreak and clearly worth an investigation. >> reporter: the most common way to get e. coli is to eat con tomb nated food like ground

good morning. here's a look at what's topping your news for today. maryland state police are still on the scene of a deadly accident near the wilson bridge. troopers say a tractor-trailer and two other cars were involved. one of the cars was speeding and hit the other car and slammed into the tractor-trailer. two people died at the scene. two others were taken to the hospital. the accident shut down the local lanes of the outer loop for hours. d.c. police are trying to figure out how a man died while in their custody. yesterday afternoon four officers were called to p street in southwest to help mental health officials. officers say 38-year-old anthony

we'll look at some of these very public family feuds. and before you leave on your summer vacation, we've got some travel tips to save you time and headaches at the airport including what to pack and the best strategy to make sure your luggage makes it on the plane with you. >> first we're looking into the investigation of a canadian porn star. now there's speculation he may have killed in other cities around the world. her's nbc's michelle franzen. >> reporter: luca magnatta remains locked up in a berlin jail where he await charges in a grisly murder and dismemberment case. >> he is alone in a cell for 23 hours so, he has no con tact with other prisoners.

>> reporter: magnotta is accused of killing, dismembering and eating a roommate that he dated in the past. dlam he mailed body parts to ottawa and schools in vancouver before he fled. while searching his apartment they found a human torso inside his suitcase. now police in the u.s. are looking to possible links to similar cold cases including the so-called hollywood sign killing. in january they found the severed head near the iconic sign. police later found his severed feet and hands. >> in order to be as thorough as possible, of course, they contacted the folks up in canada just to see if there's a chance they're related. >> reporter: the crime in canada triggered a global manhunt with sightings that first led the police to paris. then authorities in berlin

arrested him at anne internet ka faf and told police he was searching articles about himself on the computer. but canadian authorities are still building their case against magnotta, with the biggest question of why. still, unanswered. for "today," michelle franzen, nbc news, new york. >> clint van zandt is a former f u profiler and n b bc analyst. what could have been anyone or his motivation for videotaping that and then publicizing it online? >> well, think this guy is the ultimate poser. if you look in a different dictionary under narcissist, you're eventually going to find a picture of this young man. everything was about him. he made up this fake back

groound, fake history. he had 70 different internet sites that he established where he wrote about himself and then traded stories back and forth about himself. he was an ultimate fake, i think, in reality, but he had to support this. he wanted to be known as a james dean-type serial killer and i think these are the actions that he took to try to make his fantasy into real life. now real life and fantasy has had a head-on crash, and, of course, real life is going to win. he's in jail charged with this horrific crime. >> clint, you mentioned the title serial killer. police are investigating the murders of one in california, two in tucson. do you see a pattern that would make something like this worthy of investigating? >> this crime is so bizarre, tamron, that the multiple weapons that were used to kill

-- cutting off the head, the arms, the legs, the sex acts with the body, the cannibalism, all of that, it's like he took every bad movie he had ever seen in life and acted out on his victim. the question for many people is would you be capable of doing all that the first time on one victim or had you practiced, so to speak. had you done it to other people along the way. >> clint, you heard the officer in that piece say he wanted to be glorified. we know he was arrested. searchling for articles about himself on line. does that fit the thrill seeker, i guess, part of that that seems to be -- i don't want to use the word assassinated because this is so horrific, but in understanding someone's behavior in such a horrific crime. >> tens of thousands have friended him online because of the horrific video. there are those who commit the act, others who like to sit down

at the edge of the abyss and look down the dark hole and watch what's going on. i think he brings out the worst in people when they see something like that. all we can do is hope that it ends here, that we don't have more copy cats and that he's not responsible for some of these erie horrific acts in canada, in the united states, the west coast, down in arizona, places like this where the authorities have to look at victims that have been killed in a similar manner, see if he happened to be in those same areas at the same time. maybe this was some type of practice on his part as he built up to this final act in canada. >> all right. clint van zabndt, thank you ver much. >> let's switch gears and get another look at the weather. >> there's rain along the pacific northwest. i love to send you heat. i'm sure you would appreciate

summer vacations are meant to be a time to relax and kick back. many times we plan them with the intention of having fun but we often encounter some unavoidable situations that can turn sblili into a drag. first bit of advice i want to talk about, something i do. i found out i was a geek, the only one who did it. look at the airplane you're going to be on before you book it in terms of the size of the plane. >> yeah. >> why. >> always determine the size. you can get this information very easily. this is very helpful because a small plane that holds 70 passengers also has a lot less

overhead space for carry-ons that you might be able to fit on a larger plane. this may help anticipate whether you have to check your bag at the last minute. >> it's a problem with any size plane if you're in the last boarding group. >> and if you don't have priority boarding it makes a big difference. >> next. safeguard your belongings. you put it in the overhead bin and you don't see it till you get to your destination. >> instead of putting your wallet and phone in an open bin, zip it up and keep your laptop last. that way if you get held up at the scanner, you won't be worried about somebody walking off with it on the other side. keep your valuable in a bag compartment safe, especially if you plan to sleep or leave your seat. and avoid temptations. don't bring those flashy designer bags with lots of logos because they're very conspicuous

and make you a conspicuous target and they're very expensive. >> let's talk about the issue of packing in general. what's the rule of thumb when it comes to packing for you in. >> well, last year, 1.9 million planes were mishandled on major carriers. don't take chances with yours. if you have any valuable or irreplaceables, leave it at home. do you really need your diamond bracelet on a beach? probably not. >> if something's stolen out of bag -- it's happened to me -- what's your recourse. >> most airlines offer $3,300 but that's for irrevocably lost bags. it's really difficult. there are some things that are limited from liability. jewel jewelry. electronics are excluded. >> how do you prove it?

you have to prove receipt. that's what makes it difficult to claim that $3,300. >> another piece of advice you want to talk about is how we dress for an airplane. >> it's often overlooked but you don't want anything to hold you up, especially through security. dress the part. wear shoes you can put on and take off easily. avoid shoes that can set off the detector. avoid layering up. they can make you peel off the clothes and that could cost you time. it's safe to bring something warm on the flight because now in a lot of cost-cutting measures, airlines are charging for blankets north stocking enough on board. it gets a little chilly. thanks tr the advice. thank you.
