hold onto it for a moment, steve. mrs. wyeth you sold union rags and repurchased the horse. why? >> because i had a dream, and i knew he would make it. only had that racehorse and half of another, and i knew michael do do it with him. it was my dream, and he made it come true today, he and johnny. i knew he could do it. nobody would have gotten through on the rail other than johnny today. i can tell you that. that was unbelievable. he just said move over, i'm coming. he believed in the horse. michael got him there. it was unbelievable. >> thank you, mrs. wyeth. john, quickly your thoughts on the tactics. our time is short. >> i thought it went correctly. i wanted to get a good break and get in a nice comfortable position going forward, and then i was just hoping i get the nice

room to go through there. i got to give it horse. he did it all for me. he was there and responded to the wire. i'm very glad i got on him and knew him and he worked out just fine for us. >> michael matz, you thought you had a horse with triple crown potential. bad trip in the derby, but what a way to end the last of the three triple crown contests. >> well, i'm just glad for phyllis and the horse that we really got to see the real union rags. >> we go to tom hammond. all right, bob, and finally good luck for union rags after all that bad luck. mike smith said he shouldn't have let him through on the inside. what do you think? >> there's a couple different factors. there was a big enough hole, and he was game enough to go through there. the real union rags showed up today. he had adversity here last year, he's 2 for 2 at this racetrack now. he overcame that at belmont park last year. so a very, very good performance today. >> back in march if you had told a whole lot of horse racing

people that we get to the belmont stakes with the possibility to win a triple crown as we had earlier this week, they would have said union rags will be the horse. there was the disappointment in the derby, caused a lot of people to jump off the bandwagon. they said he wasn't tough and matured last year, that caught up to him now. he couldn't get the mile and a half. today he was mature and tough, and he got the mile and a half better than anybody. >> he returned to the scene of his greatest triumph today the champagne stakes last year. he got good luck and got the job done. back to bob costas. >> as was noted earlier, congrat lagtss to michael matz and john velasquez. bob baffert has won nine triple crown races and could have won with a little luck all three this time. his horse bodemeister twice and today paynter run down at the end by the combined length of a racehorse practically. he lost all three triple crown races in 2012. that's going to do it for all of us here at belmont part. there's still more to come as
