vance. crews rescues people after a yacht exploded. it happened just before 4:30. 21 people were on board the vessel called "blind date." we're told seven of them were injured. no word on what caused that explosion. now to today's dramatic testimony in the child abuse trial of jerry sandusky. the former penn state assistant coach faces 52 criminal counts. he's charged with sexually abusing ten boys over a period of 15 years. the first witness went into graphic detail tonight about how he was allegedly abused on the university campus. brian moore is in bell font, pennsylvania, with more. brian? >> jim, this is the first day of testimony. suffice it to say it was dramatic and disturbing. ? opening statements of the trial, two diverging profiles. the former penn state assistant

coach was described by the prosecution as a serial predator action and by his defense as a father figure who is being victimized. prosecute owes jjoe mcgettigan the pictures of the victims at the time they were abused. >> the prosecution put up a series of pictures of each one of the victims. at the time the allege abuse began. in the jury's mind, they will always now, through the course of this trial associate those victims with those imaging they saw as as less enboys. >> the first witness was 13 when he met sandusky and described a relationship that escalated into physical acts. publicly the witness said sandusky would act like his father, but when they were alone, quote, basically like i was his girlfriend. mcgettigan warned the jury these

victims were very young at the time of the abuse and the reactions were that of young children. the prosecution also said since it was so long ago the recollections may not be perfect. joe amendola says his client admits to taking showers, but that it was part of the football culture. among the pieces of evidence introduced today, a photograph showing the young victim wearing a football jersey. it was the game jersey of penn state start and later washington redskins player lavar arrington. living in belafonte, pennsylvania. the board of elections efficiently declared a vacancy, this in the wake of last week's fraud charges. top scherrwood is here with more on the quiet, yet intense battle that's shaping up to see who will replace brown.

a driver crashed into the suv, and then tried to set it on fire. today there's word of a possibly motive for that. jim rosinfield joins us from d.c. superior court where the suspect was arraigned today. >> jim, prosecutors appealed to the judge this afternoon to keep him behind bars. they call friday evening's potentially explosive suv experience utterly extreme. this was the seen friday even, 7:45, just after the busy rush. 30 feet into the lobby at 1050 connecticut avenue. the red jeep patriot flew right past the entrance to the metro. neighbor gary walker is still left wondering why. what struck you as odd about the fact that he was able to hit that glas? >> that he didn't hit the metal

barriers, didn't hit the column and didn't mow down any people. >> reporter: authorities had an early hunch this was no accident. inside the vehicle a disoriented charles ball of new market, maryland and a distinct odor of gasoline. they say ball intended to turn this into a fiery explosion, had a gas canister in the car and a lighter that failed to work. in arguing for no bond this afternoon in course, prosecutors pointed to a voice mail. promising people are going to pay for their actions, adding there would be bloodshed. >> an hour or two earlier he would have killed people. with the metro access here and this many people coming in and out, it's a very crowded intersection. >> reporter: investigators say ball told police at the scene he wanted to send the fbi a message, because they were ignoring his pleas for help to protect his family. from what or whom? well, that remains a mystery

this evening. he's next in court judge 28th. live at d.c. superior court, jim rosin did not field news4. johns bryson is accused of causing two traffic accidents out in california that may have been provoked by a medical emergency. police say he was involved in the accidents on saturday in los angeles. he was found unconscious in his car after the second crash. he was taken to the hospital and kept overnight for the observation. please say drugs and alcohol were not factors in either accident. officials at the commerce department say bryson suffered a seizure. he returned to washington last night and was on the job today. bryson is 68 years old. from wildfires to flooding to scorching temperatures, a good portion of the country is dealing with some wild weather right now. along the gulf coast, the problem is rain. pensacola got hit with more than a foot and a half of rain this weekend.

that washed away roads, forcele people to find higher, drier ground. out west, raging wildfires, firefighters can't contain them. the fires have damaged dozens of buildings, forced thousands to evacuate. my house is gone, and now i'm not going to have a home, and i have no place to go. >> other cities are dealing with unusually warm temperatures. schools in philadelphia let kids go home at noon, because temperatures soared into the 90s. it's always been hot around here. it's only june. veronica has a look at conditions at the current moment. >> another warm one for us, another indeed, so we've had now three consecutive days with 90 degrees or higher as the first time this year that we have seen that. behind me you're looking at some of the highs, upper 80s to around 90, the 0 actually there your high for reagan national airport, your average now 83 degrees, so running several

mubarak remains in a prison hospital, his health is failing. security officials say doctors used a defibrillator on his heart twice today when they could not find a pulse. he is slipping in and out of consciousness. officials say he's suffering from high blood pressure, depression and breathing problems. his oldest son has received permission to stay near him. mubarak is 84, sentenced to life in prison nine days ago for the deaths of antigovernment protesters who wanted him out of office. race for the white house now, president obama and mitt romney have new campaign commercials that take opposing positions. it is not the work that they do that's the issue, rather their pay and benefits. steve handelsman reports. firefighters, police, teachers, to put more of them back to work. president obama is demanding, congress fund his plan to help

>> it is fascinating. so what do we have coming this way? >> some stormy weather for tomorrow. first we're going to get some showers. in fact really tomorrow the bulk of the day we're talking manner showers, we will be getting pockets of heavy rain tomorrow. this evening, some light scattered showers. take a look out in the distance, again kind of a muddier grungier kind of sky there with clouds coming in. 90 high, again this is the first time this year we've had three consecutive days that have been 90 degrees or higher. we started the day mild, too, at 72. you can see just how much above the arch high we are withage average high of 83 degrees. where do we sit right now? we have cooled off a bit 8, still a south wind at 13 miles per hour. wait until you see what that southerly wind will be bringing our way tomorrow. some locations that have gotten the rain.

72 in winchester, 72 in aber son, they've had some cooling shower. right in d.c., temperatures are all over the play. but the high heat today for sure, we're still hanging on to it here with one of the highest temperatures anywhere in the eastern third of the country. we're at 89, 84 in raleigh, north carolina, but look hat dallas, texas. 97 degrees, and, of course, they have been getting some of that rain down there with the tropical moisture. they will be cooling off as well. we have some showers again around here, warren foehn, in and around fairfax, light showers right now, but we're going tower the rain chances increase, especially after midnight. you can see that spin, an area of low pressure, and look at the

storms down across the eastern portion of south carolina, north carolina, down through eastern georgia right now. big-time storms, that's the same system that produced all that rain. here's the cold front, with another area of storms. in fact, this one is severe, paducah just east of memphis, we will not see the cold front move through until tomorrow night, so the rain chances will be pretty long, starting from the lower night. showers, showers, 9:00, 10:00, 11:00 p.m. other locations starting out in the mid 60s. here's your future weather. we're going to get squeezed by this area of low pressure with the tropical moisture driving northward. showers and thunderstorms for us tomorrow. any of these thunderstorms, i don't think we're talking widespread severe weather, but any of those storms will be packing quite a bit of lightning and some rain rates that could be pretty high.

we clear out in the predawn hours on friday. that means some sunshine for midweek. let's talk about your forecast, then, for the evening. it's going to be warm, 72 to 80, showers developing, light showers tomorrow morning, some wet weather around the area, nothing too heavy. 69 to 76, with the southeast wind, still a bit humid in the air, 81, we cool off again. still humid because it's tropical moisture that would be over us. heavy rain at times for the afternoon and for the evening rush, but we lose it, clear out on wednesday, it in fact will be breezy with air that would be feel much better, more comfortable. 78 your high on thursday, just a few passing showers. friday is quiet with a high of 80 degrees, and i love the way next weekend is looking. we're not going to be sizzling like last weekend, about 81 to 85. >> looks great. >> thanks, veronica. we have a developing story

at this hour. an inmate is on the loose in prince georges county after walking away from a prison work detail. please say conreal thames was last seen with a road crew off 197 and merekirk road. erica gonzalez has more. >> reporter: it's been seven hours since 27-year-old conrad thames was last seek working on a road crew. there's still no sight of him. the convict weighs about 160 pounds, last seen off of 197 and merekirk road in laurel. initially maryland state police and prince georges authorities were using canines and choppers to find him. now the efforts are solely ground level. police presence is high in the areas. thames is serving a ten-year sentence, and according to the maryland department of safety and correctional services, had just about a year left to serve. does it make you nervous?

breaking news out of the prince georges couy now, chopper 4 over the scene of a disabled mark train. just north of the new darrell ton metro station. we're told train number 538 left the station and was stopped for an unknown reason. passengers are being removed from the train right now. officials are bringing another train to pick up those passengers. no reports of anybody injured. a mysterious death in virginia after the owner of a dunckin' donuts store was found beaten to death. >> police say his killer is still out there. chris gordon has the report.

>> reporter: detectives are looking for the killer of borat patel, whose body was found in these bushes in the parking lot of the apartment complex where he lived. the autopsy reveals he died of blunt force trauma. mr. patel was an immigrant from india, living the american dream. he was co-owner of this dunkin' donuts store, which just opened for business four days earlier. both mr. patel and his wife worked here friday night. after closing, drove the mile or so to their apartment. mr. and mrs. patel returned to their apartment just after midnight on saturday morning. mrs. patel apparently went inside, but not mr. patel. neighbors called fairfax county police at about 12:45 to report they heard a fight. >> police are circulating this sketch of the suspect, believed to have beaten borat patel to death. he described as indian man, 25

to 30 years old. >> the composite was provided by someone who was in the parking lot around the time of the fight, was in faulk one of the callers. we received several phone calls. >> reporter: please won't say if mr. patel knew his attacker, but they do suggest the community is not in danger. >> you have children, yeah, you have two kids. >> what are your thoughts? >> it's not scary, it's not. >> reporter: the shot was busy today, customers upset by the tragic news. >> it's amazing. i can't believe it. not for relate eston. >> reporter: police are looking for any information that could lead them to this murder suspect. chris gordon, news4. a so-called birther challenge to president obama's citizenship is shut down in the supreme court. today the court refused to hear a lawsuit appeal that claims the president was born in kenya.

former maryland senate candidate alan keyes was among three independent party politicians who had brought this challenge. a previous ruling decided they did not have the legal standing to file the lawsuit. on wall street today, stocks tumbled in the final minutes of trading. they did so over continued fears about a global economic slowdown. the dow jones industrial average fell 143 points. the nasdaq finished 49 points lower. the s&p 500 lost 17 points. in fair tax county, school board officials think students should be able to sleep in a bit longer. they are considering a plan that would start the school day after 8:00 in the morning. tracee wilkins describes why. >> as it stands, some fairfax county high school students are getting to their bus stops at 5:45 in the morning, so they'll make it to school by 7:20. some parents say it's too hard on the kids. >> getting up so early, they

can't concentrate. they get sleepy during the day. >> last april the fairfax county school board agreed that it would be better for high school to begin after 8:00 a.m. that's where the discussion ended. no actual changes were made. >> this is a matter of the health of our teen students. >> school board member sandy evans is a strong advocate of later school times, now is leading the charge for the board to actually implement them. >> two thirds of our teen students get 7 hours of sleep or less per school night. they should be getting 9 hours of sleep. that is major sleep deprivation. >> today board members were presented research showing how our school districts were able to make it -- >> the question is how do we make that happen? how do we do that in a way that ensures where you don't harm any of the other things we care deeply about. >> reporter: some parents are hoping the board reaches another impact, because they still don't see the need for a change.

>> sleepwise, i don't think that the children will get any more sleep than they do now. >> i think it's okay the way it is. i think with the schedules, it would changes everybody's schedule quite a bit and would impact traffic even more. >> reporter: the school board will now take time to revue its research. they're not expected to vote on this issue until sometime during the fall. in fair tax county, i'm tracee wilkins, news4. they may hire a consultant to do even more research to see how to successfully implement this time shift. a noisy protest in the district today. demonstrator held a new orleans-style funeral at the d.c. public services commission. they want to, in their words, bury a proposed rate hike by pep ko. that company is looking for a rate hike in dc. the company says the raise is to help pay formore than $900 million in improvements.

virginia's senate race is expected to be one of the most closely watch this fall, but voter turnout for the primary tomorrow is expected to be low. julie kerry has more on how that could affect the republican nominee. >> reporter: it's a primary that may pass some by. even the campaign signs are far and few between. four republicans are running to become the nominee for the u.s. senate. the winner will step into one of the most closely watched races in the country, one that could decide the balance of power in the senate. >> we can make a difference and make a difference for america right here in virginia. >> reporter: that's one reason governor bob mcdonnell stopped by a final rally for the candidate he favors, former senator george allen. prince williams county delegate bob marshall, activist jamie radtke, and e.w. jackson? >> it's not surprising that not a lot of people are paying close

attention. many people consider it's a forgone conclusion that george allen will win and we have this interesting presidential race going on, and that's a lot more fun. >> reporter: even voters who do plan to cast ballots concede the primary is not necessarily on their neighbors' radar. >> the primary is even registers, i would say mostly not. there's not been a lot of publicity about it, and unless you follow it closely, i'd say it's going to be very low turnout. >> reporter: political observers say there are two risks for front-runner allen, a smaller winning margin than expected or the impress that republicans aren't yet enthusiastic. republican leaders are confident the primary winner will have little trouble unifies republicans afterwards. the key to the contest in the fall against democrat tim kaine is winning over independent voters in places like fairfax, louden and pring william counties. in ash burn, julie kerry, news4.

there are several other local races. jim moran has a challenger, and two republicans are running for the right to challenge connelly in the fall. 14 democrats are running for city council, many focusing on concerns over the controversial wat waterfront development plan. some couples decide to do destination weddings and usually pick a certain location. over a weekend a rider snapped pictures on the yellow line. he said they were crossing the po thomas when all of a sudden a wedding broke out. the rider said if he knew there was going to be a wedding, he would have dressed better. coming up tonight, a new jersey man believes divine intervention helped save his life during a storm. apple has made it clear it's cutting ties with a major company. we'll find out who's in and who's hout. veronica? >> speaking of storms we have storms to our south, storms to

down in alabama there's a manhunt under way. authorities are looking for a gunman who opened fire at a pool party near the campus of auburn university. three people were killed, three others were wounded in ha shooting. it happened on saturday. three of the victims had ties to the school's football program. as for a motive, witnesses told police the 22-year-old suspect got into a fight with some of the victims over a woman. court records show the suspect had been arrested twice before on gun charges. both times he had been released. it's an epidemic taking place in retail and grocery stores across the country. high quality shoplifting they're calling it, groups of thieves, sometimes organized into gangs

well be getting storms a couple times tomorrow. first, though, just some showers, and those will be light showers. we've already seen some isolated showers out there. so let me take you through the future weather here, early tomorrow morning, scattered light showers, but watch what happened, watch the clock as we advance through the day tomorrow, with mostly cloudy skies, the pockets of dark green and yellow. that's where there could be strong storms, look looking for any severe weather, but with those storms some areas of pretty heavy rain. this rain will stay with us not only through the afternoon, but through the evening, departing our area about 2:00 to 3:00 p.m. wednesday morning. when it does we should be clearing out and getting back to some sunshine. in terms of how much we could
