a free agent, a winner of the stanley cup with the pittsburgh penguins. remember, he was on the receiving end of that hit by steve bernier in that first period. really kind of changed the tide and momentum in this hockey game. but scuderi's stability on the back end. and colin fraser won a stanley cup with the chicago blackhawks. did not play a game in a stanley cup final, but a fourth line role player, who scored the first goal of this final in game one in newark. >> mike: what a night of celebration this will be. in the city of angels. dan aykroyd in the movie "dragnet" played sergeant for the city of los angeles, sure the city isn't perfect. we need a better life for all our citizens, cleaner streets, better schools and a good hockey team. haven't checked the schools or the streets, but this hockey team was great.

a suspected thief flour bombed. we begin with breaking news in montgomery county. a train hit a pedestrian at the randolph road crossing in rockville tonight. it may have started with a game of chicken. >> montgomery county police say this may be the result of a game of chicken. they say a 23-year-old male was out here near these railroad tracks with his girlfriend about 9:30 this evening. the arms of the crossing were down is what police say. and they tell us that the girlfriend told police that he's done this before, that he was trying to get extremely close to the train without getting hit and that's not what happened. they say that the male was taken to suburban hospital with a severe laceration to his leg as well as some type of hit to his head. montgomery county police say this is all the result of what they call a game of chicken.

in rockville, erika gonzalez, news4. one of the most notorious missing child cases in australia. a dingo did indeed take the baby. a wild dog took the daughter from a camp site in 1980. lindy was convicted of killing her daughter and spent four years in prison before she was cleared of the crime. there was a movie about the story starring merryl streep. lindy and her ex-husband were in court as the coroner announced the results. >> the cause of her death was as a result of being attacked and taken by a dingo. >> according to the australian newspaper the parents say they

hope the country will no longer deny that dingoes are dangerous and they are relieved to come to an end of the saga. a suspected thief got a surprise when he broke into a locker at a d.c. health club. it was part of a play by gym management. shomari stone has our report. >> caller: take a close look at this suspect. surveillance cameras capture him at the prowl at vida fitness gym. he grabs a lock and yanks it off and flour shoots out of the locker, falling on his pants. >> it's amazing how some people don't think. >> reporter: the general manager was tired of thieves breaking in lockers and stealing credit cards. >> the best way is to catch them. >> reporter: he installed these cameras inside men's locker room and told they were being recorded and put a track in one

popular bike path in arlington. police say a bicyclist came down a hill on the four-mile run trail. he was yelling on your left, on your left! that's when police say the victim turned around and moved into the path of the bike. it happened at 7:15 this morning. the commerce secretary is taking a medical leave of absence following a seizure that caused him to crash into two cars in los angeles yesterday. bryson hit a car and left the scene, got into a second accident. he was charged with felony hit and run after being found unconscious behind the wheel. bryson has limited recall of those events. a man in prince william county is hoping this video might find the people who trashed his rental home. you can see someone broke windows, punched holes in the

walls and appeared to light fire to parts of the carpet. the man who owns the home says there is $6,000 in damage there. it happened sometime last week. it's a rental unit but no one was living inside. baltimore firefighters are expected to be out all a night putting out hot spots after a massive five-alarm warehouse fire that broke out in a vacant warehouse in the fells point part of the city. fire officials say the roof collapsed forcing the firefighters to get out and two were hurt. the cause is under investigation. there is breaking news tonight in the search for a gunman in a deadly shooting near auburn university. police have surrounded a house where desmonte leonard is thought to be hiding out. leonard is accused of shooting six people at a pool party. he killed three of them over the weekend.

two of the victims were former players for the football team. the coast guard called off a search and rescue mission for a reported yacht explosion and it may have been a costly hoax. authorities got a radio call this evening about the incident off the coast of sandy hook, new jersey. they had ambulances waiting but they found no passengers and didn't find any sign of any boat wreckage. the coast guard is trying to figure out where the radio call came from. rain is moving our way. chuck bell? >> a cloudy day finished up with rain drops moving in this evening. not anything too heavy but steadier showers south and west of the metro area. and there is more where that came from. this is lifting in our

direction. just a few light sprinkles for the next couple hours. but by the time you get up in the morning, a wet drive for the morning. humid and wet in the afternoon hours with temperatures near 80 and a chance for heavier rain in the second half of the day tomorrow. we'll talk about that in the seven day coming up. dramatic testimony in the child sex abuse trial of jerry sandusky. he is accused of sexually abusing ten boys. the first witness took the stand today and talked about how he was 13 years old when sandusky began showering with him and began touching him inappropriately. the man is 28 years old now but the prosecution took steps this morning to make sure the jury saw him and the other alleged victims as children. >> the prosecution put up pictures of the victims at the time the alleged abuse dwbegan.

so in the jury's mind they will associate the victims with the images they saw of these men as adolescent boys. >> sandusky denies the charges against him and his lawyer says he will take the stand. >> closing arguments tomorrow in the roger clemens perjury trial. the defense called the final witness and rested its case this afternoon. clemens is charged with making false statements to congress about whether he ever used performance-enhancing drugs. jury deliberations could begin tomorrow afternoon. delays on the marc train after part of a locomotive malfunctioned in maryland. the train became disabled this evening north of the new carrollton metro station. it took more than an hour to evacuate that train.

still no sign tonight of a convicted killer who walked away from a prison warrick detail in prince george's county. conrad thames was last seen 12 hours ago picking up trash in laurel. that's where he disappeared. corrections officials say he was serving ten years for manslaughter and handgun violences and had a year left to kev. and take a good look at this the man in this sketch. he is a suspect in the beating death of a dunken donut shop owner. the owner was found dead outside his apartment over the weekend. and investigators are not saying whether they believe the suspect knew him. but they do not believe the community is in any danger. no injuries reported in the crash of a navy drone on maryland's eastern shore that went down in a test flight this

afternoon. it's about 20 miles west of salisbury. the navy says the crash did not cause property damage. the drone was formerly part of an air force fleet. prosecutors say a man who crashed a rented suv into a downtown office building wanted to get the fbi's attention. a judge denied bond for charles ball. he cashed the suv into a building on friday night. he wanted to create an explosion. he believed his family was in danger and he wanted the fbi to help him. a man from california is facing charges after sitting in a cage filled with hemp plants outside the white house tonight. he said he was protesting federal policy prevenlting farmers from growing hemp. he is charged with blocking

passage and possession with the intent to distribute. an amendment to the farm bill would allow industrial hemp to be grown in this country. tomorrow republican voters in virginia will select their party's nominee for the u.s. senate. the inner will challenge tim kaine in the fall. george allen is trying to win back the seat he lost to jim webb in 2006. he has three charges. political experts say tomorrow will likely mean low turnout numbers at the polls. >> it's not surprising that not a lot of people are paying close attention to this race. many consider that george allen is going to win and we have this interesting presidential race going on. >> republican leaders say despite the expected low turnout they believe the nominee will unite the party in the coming months. a devastating loss for

researchers are dealing with what they call a devastating

setback in the field of autism research. a freezer at the harvard brain tissue research center malfunctioned last month. that freezer contained the world's largest collection of autistic brain samples. scientists discovered 54 of the samples were damaged. some can be used in genetic research but is it not clear if they can fully meet the needs of the researchers. lightning is said to be the cause of a wildfire. it killed a woman in northern colorado. the high park fire broke out early saturday morning and since then it has destroyed at least 100 homes and scorched 64 square miles and firefighters say it is not contained. is it moving toward more populated neighborhoods. states of emergency in southern alabama after more than 7 inches of rain fell today

following a weekend of record-breaking rainfall there. streets and homes flooded and a number of roads shut down. the corporation council withdraw the lawsuit. >> the detroit mayor says his city could go broke on friday. detroit made a deal with the state back in april to get the city out of financial straits. but the deal violates the city's charter so a lawsuit was filed to keep it from going through. the mayor says it will keep detroit from getting the money it needs to pay 10,000 employees. the salon that the new jersey tanning mom made notorious is facing a $5200 fine. the health department says the city tropic salon allowed customers to be overexposed. the woman is accused of taking her six-year-old daughter into the tanning beds, which she

northern virginia. there is a live look at reagan national airport. 79 degrees still at the airport. winds are fairly light averaging 9 miles per hour. but the humid 58% and climbing. dew point numbers in the low and mid-60s and will inch up over the next 12 hours or so. up to near 70 degree dew points tomorrow morning. the current temperatures in the mid-70s. low 70s out in northern virginia. upper 70s in beautiful southern maryland. rainfall, nothing all that heavy. spits and drizzles for this evening but steadier showers down in the southern end of the shenandoah valley. these showers are five to six hours away. that puts them in here just in time for the morning commute. be ready. there may be wet roadways to deal with. but nothing like this. look at that explosion of severe thunderstorms all the way from

columbus, georgia all the way back to the northeastern corner of louisiana. a tough night in alabama and mississippi. for us just waiting on the rain drops early tomorrow morning. our chances for heavier rain showers are tomorrow night and evening as an area of low pressure intersects with the cold front from the west. wet for the morning commute and 4:00 or 5:00 tomorrow afternoon with the low pressure sitting on top of us, heavy rain is a possibility. between 3:00 or 4:00 in the afternoon up through 9:00, 10:00, 11:00 in the evening the weather front brings in another round of heavier showers and the leading edge of the end of the rain as well. what happens after that area of low pressure scoots off the coast? high pressure will provide a northeasterly wind to wedge the cooler air in. the northeasterly and easterly flow is not necessarily our friend for sunshine at this time of the year.

overnight cloudy, rain becoming steadier. start off with the 60s and 70s. tomorrow rain heaviest in the afternoon or evening. if you are going to the beach, ocean waters 71, not the best beach days tomorrow or wednesday but at home, the temperatures in the low 80s the next couple days. we'll be dry wednesday but a drop for thursday. until that area of low pressure and wind break down could be problematic for seeing much in the way of sunshine. >> i see outlet shopping at the beach tomorrow. >> i like it. >[ leanne ] appliance park has been here since the early 50s.

in a tease we saw somebody hit one looked like out of the park. >> the nats did great. they are suddenly coming alive in terms of the bats. things are good for the nats. they pounded out 14 hits, three from bryce harper and a workmanlike effort for jackson. bad news right away for the jays. morrow to harper and seems to have tweaked something. gesturing to the bench. he has a strained left oblique. he leaves after nine pitches. chad beck on to continue the harper antibiotic. harper into right. there's going to be a play at the plate but he beats the throw. that makes it 1-0 nationals. harper 3 for 4 with an rbi.

now batting .295. top three, adam laroche with one on and two outs, a second-deck home run his 11th of the season. he leads the nationals in that category and the nats win 6-3. they hold a three-game lead over the braves in the national league east, their largest lead of the season. party time in l.a. you saw it right here on news4. the kings gave the devils a chance to keep hope alive but it was nothing more than a mirage with the finals back in l.a. the kings dominated with the biggest cup-clinching win since 1991 to win the first stanley cup in franchise history. the kings let the drama build just a little bit. first period. scuderi boarded. and the kings get a five-minute power play and they would take advantage.
