good morning, everyone. welcome to news 4 midday, i'm barbara harrison. tuesday, june 12th, 2012. new today, we begin with a vi vicious dog attack in the district. two dogs mauled a man in northeast washington. megan mcgrath has more for us from the scene.

>> this was an absolutely brutal attack. the man who identified himself as the victim's grandson gave us an update on his condition just a little while. his grandfather is in critical condition. now, the breed of dogs involved in this attack are known as cane courseoes. take a look behind me here. they were being used as a guard dogs, watch dogs on the grounds of this towing company here. towing pros at 36th and benning. but early this morning, two of the dogs got out and they attacked a 74-year-old man. animal control officers load the dogs into a van and take them away. the two cane corsos seem relatively sedate after their capture, but at the height of the attack, witnesses say the animals were in a frenzly, viciously mauling an elderly man who was simply walking to work. >> they were baiting him in the head and chewed him all up on the arm. investigators say someone at towing pros, a business on the corner, didn't properly close the front gate and so the dogs

were able to slip out and attack. >> i heard my grandmother screaming, like, oh, my gosh, a man is being attacked. i look out my window and two dogs are on this man. like one is pulling at his arm and the other is just gnawing at him. we all ran downstairs and we saw our neighbors were also coming outside with sticks and stuff. >> reporter: one of those neighbors was phil ragland. >> dragging him down the block literally like almost a dead animal. it was pretty scary. >> reporter: he grabbed a shovel and, perhaps more importantly, his dog, oliver. witnesses say the cane corsos took one look at the large american bull dog and ran away. >> he ran straight to them and as soon as he got up to the man and the two dogs, they just basically backed off. >> and neighbors say this is not the first time that these dogs have escaped. they also say that they've had issues with other vicious dogs in the neighborhood. now, the two dogs involved in

this attack this morning they're in the custody of animal control and there will be a hearing to decide whether they will be released back to their owners or whether the dogs will be put down. as you can imagine, the neighbors here say they don't want the dogs ever brought back to their community, again. the victim, 74 years old and in critical condition. reporting live in northeast, megan mcgrath, news 4. >> thank you, megan. right now, testimony is under way in the jerry sandusky trial sex abuse trial. the witness known as victim number one is on the stand at the start of what is turning out to be another graphic day of testimony. this time from an 18-year-old. chris palone has the latest from bellefonte, pennsylvania. >> reporter: spending the day lisening to the 28-year-old man accuse sandusky of molesting him in the late 1990s. he is being identified as victim four and sandusky initiated

physical contact with him when he was around 13 years old. he testified it started as horseplay and soon escalated to something much more sinister. lasting for a period of nearly five years. the witness described sandusky in public acting like a father, but in private, he said sandusky treated him like a girlfriend. the alleged victim said he didn't come forward because he was embarrassed and he enjoyed the gifts and access to pep state, his relationship with sandusky provided. he grew emotional during defense questioning. >> he regretted not coming forward earlier because he felt guilty that maybe he was responsible for these other victims having been molested. >> reporter: sandusky's attorney, joe amendola, showed jurors that showering with a boy was not a crime. the first wins was agitated as amendola asked him why he retained his own attorney.

showing that the acureser were motivated by money. and today jurors are expected to begin deliberations in roger clemens' perjury trial. prosecutors finished their closing arguments just minutes ago. clemens' defense team is giving their closing arguments right now. the former star pitcher is accused of lying to congress when he testified to never using steroids or human growth hormone. his initial trial last summer ended in a mistrial. and turning to the weather now, gray skies, some rain falling out there, at least for a while this morning. is it still coming down? let's ask tom kierein. >> we only had a little bit of light rain through the morning, but, now, it's beginning to pick up a little bit. we're seeing as we look at storm 4 radar, the rain intensity is increasing and aerial coverage is increasing over the last few hours. general flow moving from the southwest to the northeast but a large area of orange and yellow

there showing up on storm 4 radar. if you look at the intensity scale there on the banner there at the top, you can see it is sort of getting up to the moderate to heavy range there and those areas in orange, that includes the panhandle of west virginia and just about all of jefferson county, west virginia, and up into washington county, maryland, frederick county, virginia. lo loudon county getting some downpours and along the northern part of the blue ridge there in virginia also getting moderate downpours. metro area getting light rain to moderate rain as well as fairfax county and northern prince william. right fwhou temperatures are in the low to mid-70s and we'll warm up much more, maybe up around 80 degrees around the afternoon with passing showers and maybe a few flashes of lightning, as well. might reach low 80s to areas south of washington, but otherwise most areas in the 70s through the afternoon. could pick up an inch of rain, barbara. we'll look at when this is going to be ending and look at the

rest of the week and the weekend, too. >> thank you, tom. new this morning, d.c. police are investigating a series of stabbings and shootings in southeast washington. first around 7:00, a person was stabbed to death along 13th place. police say the man was stabbed in a parking lot. he was taken to the hospital where he later died. his name has not been released. about an hour and a half later, police were called to a shooting along sumner road. a man was shot during a basketball game. his name and condition have not been released. police say two men were stabbed along gainesville street around midnight. officers brought canine unitoots the scene to help look for clues. both men were taken to the hospital. we're told one of them is in critical condition. so far, there have been no arrests in any of these cases. and a reminder playing chicken with a train is not a good idea. a 23-year-old man is hurt this morning following a run-in with a train in montgomery county.

his girlfriend tells investigators he wanted to see how close he could get to the train at the randolph road crossing in rockville last night. he got too close when a csx train hit him. he was taken to the hospital with injuries to his leg and head. no word on his condition. and this morning, police are looking for a convicted killer who escaped from a prison work detail in prince george's county. they say conrad times was last seen yesterday morning working with the road crew off route 197 and mure cook road in laurel. he is serving a ten-year prison sentence for manslaughter and handgun violations. he only had about a year left to serve. police say timms is dangerous. if you should see him, you should call 911. eight minutes after 11:00 the time now, coming up, new information on who will be able to sell

the 32-year-old mystery surrounding the death of a 9-week-old australian baby is finally over. a coroner ruled that a dingo did, indeed, take a baby from the mother accused of killing her child.

azaria chamberlain disappeared from her family's camp site in august of 1980. her body was never found. her parents maintain she was taken by a wild dog but her mother was conviced of murder and sentenced to life in prison. she spent nearly four years there before she was cleared. lindsay and her now ex-husband were in court as the coroner announced the results of the fourth inquiry into her disappearance. >> no longer will australia be able to say that dingos are not dangerous and only attack if provoked. >> the story of azaria chamberlain attracted global attention. there was even a critically acclaimed movie about it starring meryl streep. the navy is trying to figure out why a drone crashed on maryland's eastern shore. nobody was hurt when the 44-foot-long unmanned aircraft went down on a test flight yesterday afternoon. that is about 20 miles west of

salsbury. the navy said there was no property damage. it was part of an air force fleet used overseas in surveillance operations. new today, senators are hearing testimony about the employment nondiscrimination act. the proposed law prohibits discrimination and hiring employment on sexual orientation require employers with 15 employees. currently no federal employees ban workplace on gender identity. it was first introduced in 1994. proponents cite studies that they say shows evidence of discrimination in hiring practices. it would create special preferences for gays and lesbians. commerce secretary john bryson is taking some time off to focus on his health now. bryson announced yesterday that he is taking a leave of absence two days after he was involved

in a pair of accidents. he rear ended a car on saturday afternoon in southern california and he apparently got out of the car, spoke to the other driver and then took off. he ran into another vehicle just a few minutes later. police found him unconscious in his car at the scene of the second crash. the commerce department says bryson had a seizure and doesn't remember much about what happened. today is former president george h.w. bush's 88th birthday. his granddaughter jenna bush hager sat down with him to talk about his legacy. >> i kind of banned the use of the l-word, legacy word. i think history will get right and point out the things that i did wrong and perhaps some of the things we did right. >> what about, i mean, 20 years ago. when you lost, was it a hard feeling? >> terrible feeling. awful feeling. and i really worked hard and later on people said, he didn't really care. which is just crazy.

i worked my heart out and it was terrible to adjust. but then you figure, well, life goes on. just do what the next challenge is. >> the former president also talked about his eventual death. he says he's not scared and when he goes to heaven, he hopes to his mother and daughter who passed away. the former president plans to go skydiving, again, he says, when he turns 90. in just a few minutes, first lady michelle obama will begin a book signing here in the district. at the barnes & noble on 12th street in northwest at 11:30 a.m. to sign her new book, "american grown." the story of the white house kitchen garden and gardens across america. proceeds from the book will benefit the national park foundation. and we're following a developing story out west right now. firefighters describe an uncontained wildfire in northern colorado. as explosive today additional air tankers and water dropping helicopters will be brought in to help. dry weather and strong winds are

spreading the smoke and flames. the wildfire destroyed at least 118 homes and there is now a related fatality, we understand. fire officials are saying that they found the remains of a missing woman in the rubble of her burned out home. 0% of this wildfire is contained. and, again, i guess if you're looking for some rain out there at this time. it's pretty dry. >> it has been. my brother lives about 50 miles south of the fire and at night the northern sky is glowing red. they're smelling smoke in denver, they could use some rain. not looking like it there, but, here, we have it. it is right there on our sky watcher camera which is about 300 feet up on our tower at northwest washington and through the raindrops, you can barely make out the national cathedral in the disterance. the rain has been picking up here in the last, oh, half hour

or so. right now at reagan national, 75 degrees. dew point a steamy 70. and we've got a southerly breeze around 10 to 15 miles an hour and that is holding steady, south, southeasterly winds. temperatures around the region. richmond up around 80 degrees there as well as near fredericksbu fredericksburg. and that includes panhandle of west virginia and into the northern shenandoah valley where they're getting moderate rain right now. the general flow is southwest to northeast and it's bringing this rain closer to washington. right now in northwest, this little patch of yellow and that's a ban of moderate rain and stretches across the district line and farther to the west, a few scattered showers from mcclain to great falls and then across the potomac into northern montgomery county. this is the heaviest rain these areas in orange and western loudon county and west virginia and up into frederick and washington counties in maryland.

a lot of this heavier rain is passing well north of the metro area and as we go forward here over the next 36 hours. all these zones of potential showers. you could see pretty widespread and continuing off and on through the afternoon into the evening. by midnight, a lot of it will be done and passing south and east and after midnight we'll begin to clear out and get sunshine back tomorrow. tomorrow looking like a delightful day. but for the rest of the afternoon, keep an umbrella handy. how much rain will we get? some needed rain. we're running a deficit here for 2012. here is the latest rain total estimate here in these areas in blue and in lavender, one to two inches possible and maybe a half inch in some of these pockets where we have these areas in green, but this area of one to two inch amounts the trend is it's expanding now. this is certainly going to be beneficial and this may spread into maryland, too, later today, as the general trend is showing that. perhaps a greater chance of heavier downpours. that might happen by late afternoon and into the evening

hours pa s maybe with some ligh and rain in the metro area. this will be by sunset and fall to the upper 70s throughout much of the region, much of the day, though, stay in the 70s. then this evening, lingering showers and thunder and sun sets at 8:34 and another inch possible on top of what may fall this afternoon by mid-evening and all this ending by midnight and by dawn tomorrow and down to the mid-60s and you'll notice a comfortable change tomorrow. we'll have our temperatures into the low 80s with lower humidity, a much nicer day tomorrow and partly cloudy and a bit of a blustery northwest wind gusting to 25 miles per hour. on thursday, the 50s in the morning, that will be nice for june morning and near 80 during the afternoon and partly cloudy and this comfortable pattern continues into the weekend. >> that sounds nice. >> i'll be back in a few minutes and take another close look at the radar and look at the latest trends. >> thank you very much, tom.

a d.c. gym targeted by locker themes. the manager at the fitness gym on k. street northwest said thieves had been targeting lockers stealing wallets. he posted signs would-be thieves if they were being watched by surveillance cameras and he caught one thief using an old college prank leaving the culprit with white flour on his hands. >> the great thing about it is that it actually came in, scoped out the locker room facility and found out that it was empty and decided, well, i'm going to go for the easiest target and when he opened that up, he got hit by

the flour and thankfully it was the first locker that he tried to break in to and that was his last for the day. >> the man accused of breaking into the locker did check in at the front desk with his driver's license. police are now searching for him. the watergate will launch a multi-million dollar renovation this week ahead of the 40th anniversary of the historic break-in at that property that brought down richard nixon. that according to the washington business journal. the renovation will update the building's interior and make some cosmetic improvements to the front entrance. work is scheduled to be complete in september. this sunday marks 40 years to the day of the break-in that led to nixon's resignation. wedding season is officially under way now and while some couples do destination weddings, others are finding unique locations closer to home. over the weekend, a rider took this video on a yellow line metro train. he said they were crossing the

potomac river when all of a sudden a wedding broke out on the moving train and the rider said if he knew that it had been a wedding planned on board he would not have worn his flip-flops. it's going to be a star-studded fourth of july on the national mall. organizers have announced headliners for that celebration. they include actor matthew broderick, country singer josh turner, composer john williams and a dozen olympic athletes including apolloono. a capital fourth will be broadcast live on pbs starting at 8:00 and fireworks begin at 9:00. 11:25 now is the time and coming up in the next half hour of "news 4 midday" voters taking part in primary election. a look at what's up for grabs. good news if you use a smart

right now prosecutors in jerry sandusky's sex abuse trial called their second witness to the stand. sandusky is accused of abusing 15 boys over a ten-year period. he denied those allegations. today an 18-year-old victim known as victim number one is on the stand. two dogs mauled a 74-year-old man walking to work this morning in the district. a neighbor heard the attack and brought along his large american

democratic governor tim kaine in november and another closely watched contest is happening in northern virginia. tracy wie ae wie wilkins has mo alexandria county race. >> one of the most competitive elections. 16 candidates vying for four open seats on the city council and what hangs in the balance is what alexandria is going to look like in a few years. by the end of the night we should know if the majority of the voters in alexandria are for or against the city council's stance on development in the city. questions on where and how to develop around alexandria has many voters seeing this democratic primary as a referendum of sorts on the future of the city. >> this is probably the most important election we had in the city and i lived here since 1979. >> reporter: april burke has taken a staunch position on the waterfront development plan and while she's for developing the waterfront, she's organized a group that doesn't support the

council's proposal for how it should be done. one of many issues that have divided the democratic party in alexandria. >> we don't want to see the density and the height doubled, co quadrupled, for example. >> reporter: some challengers have accused the council of listening more to developers than their constituents and voters who have felt ignored are getting their say today. >> i live on wolff street, you know, close to the water front. we're going to do just fine with the private developers. we don't need the city, you know, putting more hotels up. >> reporter: voters we talked to say they're happy there are so many candidate options this year. there are two incumbents and two are new to electoral politics altogether. some voters feel this new open field has the ability to show

alexandria's politics for -- >> reporter: polls close at 7:00 p.m. tonight. in alexandria, i'm tracee wilkins, news 4. also, today, arizona is holding a special election to replace gabrielle giffords. the former congresswoman spent the last few days campaigning for her former aid, ron barber. he was shot in the leg when giffords was shot in the head last year. barber faces republican jesse kelly, who lost to giffords in the may 2010 race. giffords resigned from the house in january to focus on her recovery. and right now a group of state lawmakers is meeting with an analyst looking into a proposal to allow table games in maryland casinos. the analysts are also studying the ben fits and drawbacks of adding a casino in prince george's county. if lawmakers can reach, governor o'malley will call a special legislative session to take up

the issue. tomorrow the d.c. council will settle a two-man battle brewing. at-large vincent orange and phil mickelson both hope to replace cuwally brown as council chair. brown resigned last week after pleading guilty in a felony fraud scheme and a misdemeanor that could send him to prison. the board will vote tomorrow on an interim replacement. voters will decide on a long-term replacement set for november 6th. vincent orange plans to run for council chair regardless of this week's outcome. new this morning, prince george's county police are investigating a shooting in capital heights. the shots rang out just before 11:00 along marlboro pike. one person was taken en tn to hospital, they're expected to make a full recovery. the medical examiner's office is trying to determine io a human. a group of children discovered the remains in a wooded area

there. and new developments this morning in the hunt for a gunman charged in a deadly shooting at. police have now left a home that they scoured for hours overnight looking for 22-year-old desmonte leona leonard. teams used thermal imaging to flush him out, but tactical teams left without removing anyone from that home. police are now investigating whether they were misled on purpose. leonard is charged with three counts of capital murder after police say he opened fire at a pool party near auburn's campus on saturday. three were killed, including two former auburn football players. and seven prince george's county firefighters battling a fire are going to be honored for their bravery. donna edwards will hold a ceremony for their families and co-workers. the seven firefighters suffered burns battling the blaze in february, which has since been

ruled an arson. going to check, again, on our forecast. here's tom kierein. >> good morning, barbara. around the metro area, light, steady rain that has overspread the area and temperatures holding steady for the last couple of hours. reagan national now at 75, although near 80 about 50 miles south of washington, much of the area going to stay in the 70s throughout the rest of the afternoon with the rainfall. now, as we look at the regional radar, storm 4 radar showing an expanding area of some moderate rain to nearly heavy rain now falling. those big areas you see in orange and yellow, that is all moderate to heavy rain from near frederick, maryland, across the potomac to just west of leesburg and much of loudon county into jefferson county and southeastern washington county getting moderate showers now. closer to washington, though, those areas in dark green are just some areas of light to moderate rain. here the latest rain total

estimates here and it is expanding the area of some one to two inch amounts and that's all those areas you see in blue across northern virginia, east and west virginia and areas south and southeast of washington. in fact, some of those areas could get over two inches and maybe up to three inches or more by the time it all tapers off and ends. that's going to be by late this evening, perhaps by midnight it's going to be all done and then after that, some sun back tomorrow and low humidity in place and highs near 80 and a bit of a blustery wind and comfortable weather into the weekend. i'll be back with another update in a few minutes, barbara. >> all right, tom, thank you. check on the mid-day traffic now, here's danella. >> good morning, barbara. i'm watching some delays across the american legion bridge. as you make your way towards the dulles toll road. you're driving at about 25 miles per hour and 14 minutes to get from i-270 to clara barton, but

journal" is reporting company executives knew of risky practices by london traders two years ago. last month's trading laws hurt jpmorgan's credit rating and caused a drastic drop in stock price. ceo jamie dimon is scheduled to foif tomorrow. this morning, we're getting a look at how brutethal economy has been on the middle class. according to the federal reserve, americans suffered a record decline in wealth between 2007 and 2010 as home values tumbled. the median family's net worth dropped from $126,400 to $77,300 in 2010. that's a 39% drop. incomes also took a hit, sinking nearly 8% to $45,800. >> these numbers go a long way to explain why the recovery has been so modest and why it is still so fragile. >> during the same three-year period, families tried to reduce

their debt, particularly credit card debt. the number of families carrying balances on credit cards dropped almost 7%. stocks are opening higher, despite worries in europe this morning. let's check in with sema, she joins us live with more on that and the rest of the day's business headlines. >> hi, there, that's right. a rebound on wall street. stocks bouncing in early trade and walmart is remaining cautious as they continue to monitor the debt crisis and as you can see, the dow jones is up triple digits at this point. in other news, apple and facebook are in focus. a big boost from apple, which is building the social network deep into its iphone and ipad software. with the next version, users will update their facebook status by talking to their phones. users will be able to like movies and apps and apple itune store. a new survey that came out

them lathering versus soap products on the skin where sdri skin people should use a soapless cleanser, such as something like cedephil. so, these are a little bit more harsh and for an oily or combination skin type may benefit from this what i'm going to show today. these are some facial peel. they're a proprietary called celuzime and an enzyme they use in some of these products that exfoliate the skin. these are left on for about ten minutes and most of these are neutrogena products and one has a little more grain in it than the other. people have to be careful about overexfoliating their skin. you only want to do this about once a week. >> the grains in them really give you a scrub. >> one has an enzyme and one has

more grains than an enzyme. different formulations here. we also have the new towelettes which these are olay and they're great for traveling, camping or whatever. they are cloths like this. just put them in water and they just lather up and they suds up. you wash the skin. one side is a little abrasive and one side is smooth. >> is that good to use at home? >> you can use this at home, you sure can. >> these go for men, as well. >> excellent for any skin type and any gender. yes. okay. then we have these strips here and these are strips that, i'll show you on susan here. you want to notice, this is for blackheads and a condition which looks like black heads and a lot of people call it with that. little hairs on the nose that look like little blackheads.

this is a strip that is excellent to take these off because you don't want to pick them out. >> work on blackheads and large pores -- >> yes, yes. this is the strip here. sticky on one side and you wet the nose and you apply it to the skin like this and you keep it on until it dries. and when you take it off, you pull it out and all the black heads are on the strip. that's what that is. >> thank you. >> and then we have some hand-held devices. this is one that is fairly reasonably priced. it is about $20 in the drugstore and this is by olay and this is a rotary brush and you put water and whatever cleanser, your favorite cleanser and you just cleanse the skin like this. these are about, like i said, 20 bucks. and it's very soft on the skin. >> that is soft. >> and this is a rotary type of brush. >> is it good? does it stimulate the skin? >> it does stimulate the skin. it's very soft.

>> yeah. >> it's very soft. so, this is one type of cleansing apparatus and then you have the one that is probably most popular is clarisonic. it is made by the people who make the tooth brush so it goes -- i'm not sure if this is going to show on the camera, but it osilates on the skin and goes back and forth and it goes 300 times a second. >> does that clean the skin? >> it's excellent for makeup. if you have getting makeup off because each little brush kind of gets into the pore and it jiggles it out. so, that is the difference between the olay brush and the clarisonic brush. >> in a word, the best way to clean your skin? >> with adequate cleansing twice a day, it really doesn't matter. it's tailored to the skin type. if it's dry skin, you want to use a soapless cleanser.

so, what are you giving your kids for lunch today? fast food restaurants are offering so-called healthier kids meals these days, but that doesn't mean that those meals are actually healthy. a group of doctors have put out a list of the five worst healthy kid meals and some of the items on that list may surprise you. jennifer reeves has more. >> reporter: as school lets out and summer break begins so do the days of drive through meals, cheese burger and fries loaded with fat. >> every now and then maybe mcdonald's, maybe burger king. >> reporter: javier is a father of two. he says it's not often but he does drive through sometimes, like most of us, and know it's not the best idea. >> i know they're bad, but when you're in a hurry, at the end of
