jurors also also heard testimony from mike mcqueary as he saw and heard what went on in the shower room. he described it as perverse. he described questions about why he didn't go immediately to the police. we'll have the latest on this case straight ahead. also coming up a terrifying moment caught on dash-cam video. an suv flips over at the end of a police chase ejecting a one-year-old girl. she only suffered minor injuries. the parents in the car are facing charges. on a lighter note. a huge turnout for the queen and duke and duchess of cambridge as they kicked off the latest leg of the diamond jubilee tour and tell you what's next in a little while. let's begin this morning on a much more serious note. disturbing testimony at the trial of former football coach jerry sandusky. michael isikoff at the courthouse in bellefonte,

pennsylvania, with more. michael, good morning. >> reporter: good morning, ann. one witness sobbed. the other was forceful and direct. the combination made it a tough day for jerry sandusky. jerry sandusky returns to court today, his lawyers hoping to recover from tuesday's powerful testimony from star witness mike mcqueary. the former penn state assistant coach was a graduate assistant in 2001 when he testified he walked into a school locker room and spotted sandusky in a shower, his arms wrapped around a young boy. mcqueary testified he was shocked and extremely flustered. after slamming his locker door, causing sandusky and the boy to separate, mcqueary said he quickly left. you don't expect to see anything like that ever, he told the jury. it was sexual. it was wrong. it was perverse. the next morning after speaking to his father, mcqueary testified he called joe paterno. but in court he was barred from

describing what the late coach said because it would be hearsay. sandusky lawyer tried to poke holes. you call your father? you don't call police? he asked. later he recounted the incident to then penn state president gary schultz who was in charge of the campus police. >> mike mcqueary came across as a very strong witness who was virtually unscathed. in fact, i would say entirely unscathed through the cross-examination. >> reporter: earlier the jury heard wrernlging testimony from an 18-year-old man known as victim one who said he met sandusky through second mile charity. he broke down and sobbed describing how sandusky's overtures, starting with backrubs went to blowing on the stomach kisses on the lips and oral sex, often in sandusky's bedroom. i was confused. i didn't know what to do, the witness testified. at times he tried to hide from sandusky in the basement, underneath pool tables and in

closets. sandusky pled not guilty. the lead lawyer, amendola said victim one told conflicting stories at different times. i don't remember dates of when i told anyone, the witness testified. all i know is it happened to me. i honestly don't even want to be here. >> i think this case will show the world how exceedingly difficult it is for victims of sexual abuse to report that heinous crime. you saw firsthand the pain that a victim of sexual abuse undergoes. >> reporter: now, despite that grueling testimony, sandusky seemed unfazed, smiling and laughing with supporters in the courtroom at the end of yesterday's session. meanwhile lawyers say both sandusky and even his wife dottie may take the stand in his defense. >> thank you. star jones is a former attorney and prosecutor. good morning. >> good morning. >> so far the defense appears 0 for 2.

at some point are we looking at a no choice situation where they are going to have to bring jerry sandusky to the stand because there are six more alleged victims yet to be called. >> we have heard probably the strongest victim at this point. you start with your best case. the defense, however, has such a mountain to climb here. they are going to have to devastate young people and their memories of one of the most horrific crimes you can imagine. as mike mcqueary testified yesterday, actions that were perverse in his own words. we find it difficult to even report the story because you cannot really lay out the allegations. so i find it difficult to figure out how the defense is going to counter it. >> being the only alleged eyewitness, he a big burden to carry. he to back up the testimony of these alleged victims who are talking about things that happened years ago. they were young people. did he do enough? >> i don't think i have ever

recalled a case where there was an adult eyewitness to a child being actually sexually assaulted. so the prosecution has, sadly to say, a gift in mike mcqueary. if the jury believes him, they have what allen dershowitz likes to call a triangle prosecution. have you a victim, you have eyewitnesss and you have corroboration. that's a devastating foundation for prosecution. >> from the courtroom he was composed, seemed credible. hisredibility has been questioned because he flipped on when he saw the alleged inappropriate behavior, saying first 2002 and then 2001. how serious is this for the prosecution? >> in some cases time and inconsistencies with the time is a problem. in this particular case the allegations are so horrific that i think the jury might forgive him with being off a year, if you will.

because the facts of what he said he saw are not the kind of facts you would forget. you might forget the date but you wouldn't forget you what saw. >> one of the most sobering things we heard yesterday was from the testimony of victim one in which he says he went to his high school counselor and reported sandusky had done inappropriate behavior. he said it was told -- he was told by those he reported to that sandusky has a heart of gold and he wouldn't do something like that. >> this is by far the worst fear of any child that reports adult sexual assault. i've had these kinds of cases where the kids, the only thing that matters to them is will the adult they report to believe them. in this situation the person who is supposed to be there, the counselor supposed to be there to have that kid's back didn't, if you believe the testimony. the prosecution is smart in takes these young now men back

to those very painful times as children. it's devastating for their own psyche, but it builds a wonderful case for the prosecution. >> to be continued, star jones, thank you for your valuable perspective. it is now 7:08. now here is matt. >> thank you very much. the wife of george zimmerman, the man who is charged with fatally shooting teenager trayvon martin is out of jail this morning. this after she was arrested and charged with personally for allegedly lying at her husband's bond hearing. nbc's kerry sanders is in sanford, florida. kerry, good morning to you. >> good morning, matt. she wi shellie zimmerman was booked into and release freddie jail in a few minutes. the wife of george zimmerman had been able to cloak her identity with the blessing of the judge and law enforcement lost the privacy she had so cautiously protected. shellie zimmerman was booked into the very same jail where her husband is locked up. she's charged with one count of

perjury. prosecutors claim she lied to get her husband released on $150,000 bond. his freedom was revoked earlier this month when it was reveiled he failed to disclose he had more than $135,000 cash in a defense fund. his 25-year-old wife was released tuesday after posting $1,000 bond after spending just 38 minutes in jail. her problems with prosecutors began, they say, when she testified by phone at her husband's bond hearing in april. her testimony included repeated denials that she knew anything about a growing paypal account. >> do you have any estimate as to how much money has already been obtained? >> i do not. >> reporter: but prosecutors a little in jailhouse recorded phone calls between shellie and george zimmerman the couple conspired to hide money by allegedly transferring tens of thousands of dollars to her

personal credit union account. in the probable cause affidavit, prosecutors wrote, "the record show that shellie zimmerman transferred more than $74,000 from george zimmerman's account to her account. >> the perjury charge against shellie zimmerman is a tale of transcripts. the one in court and the jailhouse conversations which cannot be reconciled. normally perjury is tough to prove. this doesn't look difficult in this case. >> reporter: shellie zimmerman was unavailable for comment. sources say she has yet to hire a lawyer. >> is he worried about his wife? >> serum after being charged with a crime he's worried. he's also worried she's out in the public eye and there's legitimate safety concerns for her. >> reporter: if shellie zimmerman is convicted of perjury, she could face up to five years in prison, and she would lose the ability to get a license from the state. she's currently studying to be a

of control in colorado and new mexico. nbc's miguel almaguer joins us from bellvue with the latest. miguel, good morning. >> reporter: natalie, a mixed bag here. some evacuees are told they can return back home while other residents are told be prepared to leave at a moment's notice. this is a wildfire in colorado and one in new mexico rages on. though choking billowing smoke can be seen for miles, the flames are difficult to reach. the air attack in colorado's high park, fire among the most effective weapons slowing a churning blaze feeding through forest land bone dry. still firefighters are making progress. >> we're far from the end but we're going the right direction. we continue to have faith and trust in these folks that are running the fire for us. >> reporter: the fire here has claimed one life, destroyed or damaged at least 100 structures and today threatens many more.

some 600 firefighters are on the ground, extra crews are en route, a grueling five-day fight on the frontline. >> they are incredibly brave. oh, my gosh. it's amazing what they do and how close they get to the fire. just love them. >> reporter: meantime across colorado's border in new mexico, a state of emergency has been declared in lincoln county. the little bear fire has devoured more than 200 homes, entire neighborhoods reduced to smoking rubble. the lightning sparked fire has blackened at least 36,000 acres, flames still threatening homes today. >> reporter: back here in colorado this 43,000 acre fire is roughly 10% contained. but like in new mexico all eyes will be on the forecast today. wind conditions should be relatively calm. natalie. >> we'll get that from al momentarily. miguel almaguer in colorado,

it has to be with pop warner football, the oldest youth football organization. they are literally changing the rule book. they are addressing the kind of contact allowed in the game and particularly in practice. not only to avoid safe play but to avoid dangerous concussions. there are nearly 4 million sports related concussions in the united states this year and football counts for more than half of those. new research show more head injuries during practice than a game. that's why there's a concussion initiative. most pop warner kids practice nine hours a week. new guidelines will have only a third of that in head to head contact. no direct hits and contact in a three-foot zone. the group's executive director says safety comes first now but admits things weren't always that way. >> i think particularly with concussions so much of it was a lack of awareness.

you got dinged, get back in the game. >> for this family, pop warner is a big part of life. 8-year-old anthony plays football. sister mattie is a pop warner cheerleader, dad matt a coach and his wife roberta a spirit squad leader. they joined in part because of the safety philosophy. when in doubt, sit it out, and says the new regulations are even more reassuring. >> it's a sense of comfort knowing that he's not going to get hit all the time. >> he never got a scan? >> dr. julian bales say kids' brains are more susceptible. >> a second or third concussion, really can have detrimental effects and a degradation in their function. >> you weren't knocked out, were you? >> that's why doctors are keeping close eyes on kids like dominic holster, he's had three

concussions and now wears a special helmet on the field and gets regular checkups. more than 280,000 kids participate in pop warner nationwide. these regulations are going to impact a lot of players. the bottom line, ann, we have to protect their young brains because they are more vulnerable. >> very important story. it is now 7:20. once again, here is matt. >> thank you. with the busy summer travel season under way, there's some new questions about the safety of some rental cars. a mother from california is demanding that rental companies change their ways after her two daughters were killed in a car she says should never have been on the road. nbc's tom costello has more on this. tom, good morning. >> matt, good morning. enterprise car rental agreed it was negligent after admitting it had no policy for fixing cars in its fleet involved in a safety recall. now all rental car companies are under pressure to promise they won't rent or sell cars until they are fixed.

it was on highway 101 outside of bradley, california, an horrific crash after the 2004 pt cruiser two sisters were in caught fire as they were driving. rachel and jackie didn't know the car was the subject of a recall for a steering fluid leak that could lead to an engine fire. and enterprise car rental had rented the car without making the fix. >> it's ridiculous because it's simple to fix. this is not a fledgling industry that is on the border of collapse at any moment. >> reporter: enterprise admitted it was responsible and a jury awarded the family $15 million. now congress is considering a law that would make it illegal for rental car companies to rent or sell cars part of a safety recall before they are fixed. until that law is passed, callie and members of congress have asked all rental car companies to make a promise not to do so.

>> no rental car company should allow an unsafe vehicle to ever be rented or sold to a consumer without being fixed first to the manufacturer's specifications, which have been approved by nhtsa. >> a government study found enterprise repaired only 65% of vehicles in 90 days. budget, 353 that quickly. hertz was even worse with only 34% repaired in 90 days. now avis says we do not and will not rent a vehicle which is subject to a recall. enterprise and national says the same thing. as for dollar thrifty, it says, "we have never had a serious personal injury arise from a failure to timely address a safety recall." and it repairs all safety recalls from its fleet. customers should beware. >> what consumers going to a rental company will ask for a vehicle with an outstanding recall on it. they want a safe car.

janet in bel-aibel-air, texas. >> this case has been full of twists and turns and now a bombshell. it is a rambling four-page jailhouse letter that could turn this case upside downcasting doubt on whether jack was the mastermind on his wife's life. when he reconciled with his wife after being accused of plotting three attempts on her life. she survived the attacks in 2010 but the last one, a gunshot to her abdomen and fatal. he denied any involvement in trying to kill his wife, his mistress was the brains and bankroll. she pled guilty in capital murder in exchange for her testimony expected next month.

now she's accused of planning a hit on jeffrey himself. >> michelle from her jail cell has plotted another murder. she has solicited an inmate to murder jeffrey stern for $20,000. >> wrote a four-page letter to another female inmate who turned it over last month. a detailed step by step guide on how to kill her former lover. whatever you do it must not look like a hit. it's got to be an accidental death. obviously even a close range shot didn't get rid of the wife. so you have to shoot elsewhere to finish. another bizarre twist in a case that's already seen so many. three separate attempts on yvonne stern's life, another one on her husband jeffrey. they are living in fear. >> the fbi task force confronted miss gaiser last week.

according to the task force she confessed that the note is, in fact, hers. >> reporter: the fbi says it can't comment, the case is pending. the same from the attorney's office prosecuting jeffrey stern. they told nbc news they have just been made aware of the allegations and they are investigating adding she, michelle, knows better than anyone that the entire scheme against yvonne was concocted by jeffrey stern. so far the district attorney has yet to charge her with any crime for aldly trying to put a hit out on jeffrey stern. for his part he goes on trial in the houston area next month for the three attempts on his wife's life. they live together in this home behind me. she will be at the trial in support of him next month. matt, this is a strange case at that. back to you. >> sounds like a fun bunch. thank you very much. it's 34 after the hour.

here is ann. >> a toddler in lubbock, texas, is lucky to be alive after being reject fredded from an suv in a dramatic crash. natalie with that story. >> good morning, ann. that came after a police chase when a young man was robbed at gunpoint. what police did not know at the time, there was a one-year-old girl in the back of the vehicle. the dramatic ending to the chase was caught on a police dash-cam which shows an suv flipping several times and coming to a terrifying stop. a one-year-old girl ejected from the vehicle and then miraculously stands up on her own. minutes before the crash, police say 17-year-old man and three other teens ages 14 through 16 allegedly robbed 19-year-old girl in a restaurant parking lot. she says he demanded she hand

over the purse but she tried to give him her cash $10. >> he said hand over your purse. not thinking i said no. he said i will show shoot you. >> she said she quickly handed over her purse. before the suv sped away she noticed three other teens and a toddler in the vehicle. >> he was getting in the car and i said, all that with a little baby in the back seat. called police and chased the suspect in what they say was a stolen suv. as the suv flipped again and again, the toddler was ejected out of the back window. the little girl stood up and tried to walk back to the suv. she stumbled and fell. one of the suspects then got out of the suv and grabbed the child. two of the suspects were seen running down the street with the child and were later caught in a woman's backyard. >> ran this way, that way. it made me worry because a

>> you both right now are watching max running around. he looks really healthy as he's running around. what are doctors telling you about what tomorrow's surgery will help him with? buck? >> well, tomorrow's surgery is going to help -- basically what the doctor has told us, after the surgery, max has not known how good he can feel because of the restrictions of his valve. this is going to enable him to become even more active, which is hard to believe, and help him out tremendously. >> do you want to tell us anymore about this can do list? it's so sweet. this part of the story is so sweet. in the news release you tell us when you told him about the surgery he said, mom, i don't have a choice, i have to go through it. it's scary, i don't like to but i think i may as well go through it with a good attitude. where does this come from,

jennifer? >> when we first told him, both he and his brother were sad and nervous. it was later that night, he asked if i would stay up late and talk to him. he said, i just want to focus, mom, let's talk about what i can do. first everything he was sad he wasn't able to do, all the plans we had to cancel. he wanted to start writing a list. he wrote the list and looked around and said, this house is awfully boring to recover in so we need to fun it up. we did. we're so lucky we have an articulate son that's able to tell us how to help him. that's our goal to get he and his little brother through this. this is an emotional time for our whole family. >> when he walks back in that door, in what way will he see the house is funned up. >> like you saw from the video, the garage is the explode zone, covered in science projects and paints and every stuffed animal he owns is waiting for him in the living room. he hangs on the couch and groggy and sleepy, he'll look around at all his animal, be surrounded by

sausages. we have some varieties here. sweet, spicy and turkey, correct? >> i always tend to go for the turkey. but sometimes spicy sausage. depends you what like. this is our version, italian version of hot dogs. >> first, sausage, peppers, onions, traditional recipe. do you do anything different? >> i cook them seven to ten minutes, all the way through, nice and golden. >> which ones are these, turkey sausage. >> yes, turkey, sweet italian. italian is the key because it has italian flavors in it, which means it has fennel, red pepper flakes, garlic and italian herbs. cook these down for a few minutes. >> you don't chop up these peppers fine. >> look how they fall apart. >> melt down a little bit. >> they sweat. they tart to caramelize and all the flavors come out. then what i do is add a little bit of marsala wine, give it a little sweetness. let it cook down.

garlic, red pepper flakes and oregano. this is really great for father's day. a really fun dish. tomato paste, if i can get it out. you do this. >> got it. >> these are crushed tomatoes. >> you let that all cook down together until it looks like this. >> something like that. you serve it how? >> i cut up these sausages, dump them in there. at this point you can even make this the morning of and then reheat it. >> the morning of? this is a breakfast then. >> no, i'm saying you can -- >> go ahead. >> i'm going to make you do this demo by yourself. you take the bread just like this, serve it as a sandwich. i like to take the bread out because it makes it easier to put the stuff in there. it settles in there. that's it. just like that. >> talk to me about the pasta dish. >> a different spin, other things you can do.

this morning on today's consumer we're talking about new rules for garage sales. homeowners are having them in record numbers. but some cities and towns are actually cracking down on when you can have them and what you can sell. elizabeth, lifestyle expert and "today" show contributor. good to see you. >> good to see you. >> you like these things, don't you? >> it's a national pastime. the problem is in the economy, it's gone crazy. people are using garage sales as a main revenue stream. >> are those words interchangeable, tag sale. >> tag sale northeast, garage sale in midwest. yes, they are interchangeable. >> you do need to check with your local town and city to find out what the rules and regulations are. what are some of the changes you're seeing. >> as i said, people are having them in record numbers. it's putting a lot of stress on communities. if you think about all the traffic, everything, parking. what a lot of towns are doing is requiring permits in record

numbers. those permits can range anywhere from a few dollars to $20. the point is you need to really check with your councillor if you need one. >> get the word out. you like the newspaper partly for that. >> you definitely want to place an ad the week before, the friday before and be specific. if you have john deere farming equipment, make sure you say that. if you have pottery barn, those things are big attracters to get people into your tag sale. >> you want to go to the web. >> you want to use craig list, social network, sites like garage sale tracker.com, make sure your friends spread the word. another thing towns are doing, they are also specifying where you can put signs. a lot of them are making you use their signs. like in moore, oklahoma, you need to buy the signs from the town. they are $2 apiece. can you make your own signs, the day, the time. use arrows. this is a company where you can order them online.

>> i like it, your treasure awaits. >> let's talk about what things sell and what things tend not to sell. >> kids games, anything kid related does very well. toys. sporting equipment does really well. small electronics, even big electronics do really well. what doesn't sell well, clothing and stuffed animals. think about it. if you have clothing, from a consignment shop. who wants a raty old stuffed animal. >> what about placement of things? if you go into a store, they place things in certain places on purpose to get you to spend more money? does placement matter in a garage sale. >> bundling books together, dvds, you're going to do better for money when you do that. in terms of making things look good, take for example this table. we are selling all these things but there's no reason you can't merchandise it so it resembles the way people use it.

>> someone might come and say i like the way this entire table looks. we'll take the whole thing. >> absolutely. in terms of pricing, pricing should be 10 to 30% of retail. one thing to keep in mind, you can always price down but you can't price up. >> let's talk about that at what point in your yard sale, let's say you have a two-day yard sale. by the end of the first day, should you start to slash prices. >> the whole idea of a garage sale is get rid of your junk. realize people will haggle. haggling is good. can you come down. think gifts with purchase. you want to move this stuff. you do not want it to end up back in your house. start a little higher. as the day goes on. >> a lot of people in my neighborhood team together. they all bring their stuff and have one big yard sale. >> that's an effective way of doing it particularly if you're going to do it once a year. a lot of places require you can only do it once a year. >> you're going to throw a garage sale or tag sale or yard

sale, here are the things you need to have. >> start collecting grocery store, newspaper to wrap up, bubble wrap, tags, an extension cord is good to have if you have electronics. you don't want people to go into your house to see if a light works. they might not take your word for it. a calculator. a good thing to have on hand, a tape measure, you don't want somebody to buy a sofa and not get it into their house. >> change. >> most people you need ones and fives mostly. very important, all sales final. >> thank you very much. we appreciate your advice. when we come back, we're going to take you to what is called pa man-b-q.

shot florida teen trayvon martin in self-defense. shellie accused of lying about finances during a bond hearing in april. his bond was later revoked. an emotional win in arizona. an aide to former representative gabrielle giffords was elected to fill her seat. winner ron barber was wounded in the shooting that almost took giffords life. he told the crowd life takes unexpected turns. four suspects under arrest in lubbock tech texas after an suv chase came to a sudden and dramatic end. a toddler ejected from the back of a stolen suv that rolled over. amazingly she stood up and even tried to walk back to the vehicle. one of the suspects grabbed the girl and ran off but was later caught. police say two of the suspects were the little girl's parents. the child suffered only minor injuries. she's now in the care of other

family members as her parents face multiple charges. the trial in the brutal attack on florida teen michael brewer is now under way. he was doused with alcohol and set on fire by classmates back in 2009. nbc's thanh truong. >> reporter: the attack in 2009 left michael brewer severely burned, scarred more than half his body. he to endure a painful recovery. now he's in court to face the teenager accused of instigating the attack. matthew bent and michael brewer, now 17, were once friends. but in october of 2009, prosecutors say a group of boys, led by bent surrounded brewer. and at bent's suggestion doused him in rubbing alcohol and set him on fire. >> i'm going to tell you to hold matthew bent responsible for his actions. >> reporter: the defense argues bent was at the scene but never told anywhere to set brewer on

fire. >> the individuals who committed this crime pled guilty to this crime and have been sentenced for this crime. >> two other teens charged as adults in the attack. they pled no contest and are serving prison time. they are expected to testify against bent. the boys had a disagreement over a stolen bicycle and video game. brewer survived by jumping into a neighbor's pool. he suffered burns over 75% of his body. his mother recounted the moment after his attack. >> laying on the gurney. he's got blisters all over him. >> reporter: michael brewer will also take the stand. his family says he's anxious to tell his story. michael bent is being tried as an adult. if he's convicted of second degree murder, he could face up to 30 years in prison. one of the teens already serving

a prenup, which i know is not what you want to hear. you're coming to this relationship with kids, you're coming with kids, he's coming with kids, you have assets. it's going to guide how you handle the rest of your financial life. i am personally a fan of yours, mine, and ours accounts. that's how my husband and i do it and we are on our second marriage. we've got a prenup. if we can do it, anybody can do it. you want to sort of set it up before you head into the ceremony itself so you know how it's all going to work. >> congratulations, dawn, best of luck. >> thank you. >> now let's go to an e-mail question, a viewer named michelle. she writes, i was laid off from a company i invested with, they are offering $19,000 minus the taxes which would come out right away. i also have the option to wait five more years until i'm 65 and collect a monthly installment. which way is the bess way to go.

>> amortize or lump sum, that is the question. physical of all, if they give you the lump sum you don't have to pay taxes up front, can do an i.r.a. let's go over options, guaranteed income stream, $196 for life. if you were married you could do a survivor benefit, a little less money but cover both of you for your lifetime. or do what you call an i.r.a. rollover, take that $19,000 you rolled into an i.r.a. account, manage the money for the rest of your life and you pull the money out. the key here is what's better for you. it depends on you. if i give you that $19,000, is there a risk you'll go spend it all right away. if that's the case, then i'd recommend you take the annuity payments. the annuity probably has a return of 4% on this money. the next question if you took the money and managed it yourself could you earn over 4% in your lifetime, i would tell you you could. i would tell you you can outpace the annuity and control the

money yourself. my recommendation, if you're responsible, i would do the i.r.a. rollover, rollover money into an i.r.a. account, manage the money yourself. you're not responsible. take the annuity payment. >> sally from pennsylvania. good morning, sally. >> caller: good morning. >> hi, what's your question? >> caller: i am a 60-year-old female who has been unemployed for three years and is uninsured with a heart condition. next summer i will need a new defibrillator. i need to get health insurance. without income, i don't know what to do. i do not qualify for medicaid because i'm in my home. i'm using money from my retirement account to live. any suggestions. >> that's a tough situation sally. >> i'm so sorry to hear about your condition and your situation but there are options for you. let's start with what's probably the bess option and that's to look at the high-risk insurance pool in your state in pennsylvania called pennsylvania fair care. there you should be able to get some type of insurance. right now insurers don't want to

ensure you with a pre-existing condition. under this plan you will be able to do it. have you a pre-existing condition, a state resident, u.s. citizen and you've been unemployed for six months or more so you qualify for this. it will be about a $285 a month premium and $1,000 deductible. that may seem like a lot of money but being uninsured and having to pay for defibrillator and other costs yourself is going to be a lot more. the other thing to consider since you're 60 now is to look to see whether you can get early enrollment into medicare. look at social security disability benefits. see if you can qualify for those for two years. if you're able to do so you may get medicare at 62 instead of 65. go to ssa.gov for that. if you're able to work and with an employer they cannot deny you benefits because of a pre-existing benefit. get drug benefits, health

but someone like you, with your weight, you're going to have a little more. natalie, you're sports minded, an athlete so you have to pay attention to that as well. >> you need more because you're burning more. >> especially if you're active. fact number two, what happens if you don't eat enough protein. >> people don't worry saying low protein doesn't matter. it matters a lot, not just to fuel your muscles but important for running your body, especially your brain. the brain isn't something that sucks up everything you need. if you don't get enough protein, building blocks and amino acid affect chemistry, affect anxiety, mood, sexual interest, your hunger and fullness, all these things. >> that explains when al gets cranky during certain parts of the show, he needs protein. >> that's why i eat. >> fact number three, you say we need to get the right amount of protein on a daily basis. i guess the question, protein doesn't stay in your body.

you need daily intake. >> surprisingly we don't store protein. you eat protein and it goes to the muscles. it's not stored, it's passive, active use. if you don't get enough protein it gets sucked out of your muscles, not good for your body. every day protein, lean protein, animal, vegetable protein but you need to refuel with protein every day. >> fact five, how does protein intake impact weight loss. does it have an impact on weight loss? >> for years, a calorie is a calorie, doesn't really matter. but looks like when you have a higher protein diet, not excluding other things, it's easier for you to lose weight. a signal to your brain to stay full longer, slower emptying of your stomach. you stay fuller longer. protein is double duty when losing weight. >> is it important to when you eat other foods to include protein with it. >> protein for each meal, breakfast especially. it's not natural for people to

turn to protein. do you do that? >> i do. i try to. the different kinds of protein. people think protein they think meat. >> you're not talking backin. >> talking lean protein, mix and match, amino acid building blocks are different in every food, stick with lean proteins when it's animal proteins. >> when you want to lose weight, do you want to eat a higher protein diet? >> you do but don't exclude carbohydrate, just include protein at every meal. >> what about bacon. >> canadian bacon. >> when you get older should you change the amount of protein you bring in the body. >> things change. when you're older you need more. muscles deteriorate, not as efficient translating into muflgs. not just aging. an athlete. you do a lot of that. >> i eat every day, almonds. >> a quick rundown of what people might not think of as

family every night. can you do it, too. she's the author of the new cookbook named after her website, "dinner, a love story." good morning. >> good morning. >> great to have you here. you really are cooking most nights of the week. >> yes. i have a theory about family dinner. if you can prioritize dinner, a lot of very good happy things trickle down from that. >> so true. we do that at my house, too. get around the dinner and talk about your day. >> that's the most important thing. >> it helps me to get up and get to work on time. if i'm prioritizing dinner, i'm working more efficiently, saving money, not spending on takeout. i get to treat myself to a restaurant at the end of the week. i'm not cooking homemade food every night. that's important. i want to take the pressure off because i feel like a lot of us. >> don't guilt up too much. >> have too much pressure already. >> take us through. we're going to make a salmon salad, one of the favorites in your home. >> this is a classic family

dinner in my house. we've been making it 15 years before we had kids, with new babies and with picky eaters now, what it is, it works because it's so flexible. >> starting with the salmon, a nice cut. >> a fillet, a pound. >> salt and pepper. >> throw it into the oven. >> olive oil. >> drizzle. pop it in the oven. how long in the oven. >> about 15 minutes. in that 15 minutes doing the other things. boil the potatoes. these are new potatoes. if you find purple potatoes that's great because the kids love them. they are fun and colorful. the beauty of this, again, all my recipes are strategy driven. all of these -- all the vegetables cooked are cooked in the same pot. as soon as the potatoes come out -- >> do it in steps. >> put the corn right in. >> couple minutes. >> three or four minutes. then the beans in. you don't have to clean a
