he has brought not one but two special guests with him. a little later on justin and i are going to do something that i have never done before. >> all right. we'll find out what that is. he's smiling so it's a good thing. we have a lot of news to get to first, so we'll head inside. we've got tamron hall. good morning, tamron. >> good morning. a nationwide manhunt under way for the suspect of a a shooting in a new york hospital. >> reporter: dr. timothy jorden, award winning trauma surgeon. until now, known for saving lives. jackie wisniewski, a single mother with a 4-year-old son. a hospital receptionist with a dream one day of becoming a nurse. two colleagues with a personal relationship, friends recently saw signs of trouble. >> she had choke marks. i saw choke marks and bruises on her neck. she would be on the phony with me, stay on the phone with me.

i think he may be coming over. >> reporter: she told her she had moved out of his home earlier in the year and wanted to make a new start. >> the scariest part, she kept saying he's going to kill me. >> reporter: police have only said jorden is a person of interest in the case. a manhunt began after witnesses reported hearing four shots and finding wisniewski dead. >> this was the target this took place, not a random act. again, he should be considered armed and dangerous. >> reporter: jorden, age 49, is well-known for volunteer community work. a product of a local hospital, joined the army, became a medic in army special forces units. colleagues and friends said in recent months jorden changed his appearance, losing 75 pounds and growing a beard. while others who know jorden describe him as a soft-spoken,

even keeled man who does not seem capable of the heinous crime he's suspected of carrying out. >> i find it hard to believe. i mean, the facts will come out. knowing tim as i have, got to be close to six years now, i've never seen him angry, ever. >> that was nbc's ron allen reporting. the defense could begin calling witnesses in the jerry sandusky trial as early as monday. the prosecution is finished calling eight accusers that the former assistant football coach sexually assaulted them as children. the defense claim the accusers are financially motivated, a charge they denied. sandusky maintains he's innocent as he denies 52 counts of abuse spank 15 years. more coming up in a live report. a star-studded night of fund-raising for president obama as he joined first lady at the home of actress sarah jessica parker breaking in $2 million. a second manhattan fund-raiser featured a performance from

as victim number nine who testified to a pattern of sexual assaults in the sandusky home over a three-year period. the witness, at times nervous and biting his nails, said sandusky took him to his home more than 100 times where the former state defensive coach got really aggressive and forced me to commit varying sex acts in his bedroom. sometimes, the young man said, he would scream, telling him to get off of me. pressed by sandusky lawyer joe amendola, he acknowledged he didn't tell anyone at the time. he's an important guy. he's the guy everyone knows and he's a football coach for real, who would believe kids. the young man was the last of eight alleged victims to testify, all participants in sandusky's second mile charity for troubled kids. prosecutors presented photographs and doums including affecti affectionate letters and stories

he allegedly wrote. >> the letters are a powerful pea piece of prosecution evidence. they began with them and closed with them. >> reporter: a state investigator explained how they built the case against sandusky over an often frustrating three-year period using undercover surveillance of sandusky and a lot of knocking on doors. it was a daunting case to try to get other victims to come forward, he testified. people wanted to maintain that secret. but then a break. an anonymous e-mail that led investigators to mike mcqueary, the former penn state quarterback who told them he had discovered sandusky late at night with a young boy in the school shower. then in 2011 they got the search warrant for sandusky's home and later a locker room at penn state where they found various photographs of the alleged victims and lists of second mile children with asterisk and

open-heart surgery like this are the most critical. max is showing incredible strength and doing fine so far. his mom gave us an e-mail update in the last few hours saying max is awake at times, talking, and looking forward to going home. max page, the little boy behind the darth vader mask in the famous volkswagen super bowl commercial put on a brave face to undergo open-heart surgery, doctors say with flying colors. >> we're very pleased with his progress and outcome. i think everybody was calm. i think max was more calm than the parents actually. >> reporter: his parents jennifer and buck said in a statement it was max who offered them comfort and laughed heading into surgery. holding onto his stuffed animals and his brother's hand, his mom said he told everyone, it's okay. i'm not scared. it's the same upbeat attitude max displayed at home just days before, running around and

running through the can do list he created of things he plans to do while recovering this summer. >> hide and seek, scavenger hunt. >> what do you think is going to be the best part after you're done with the surgery? you have a lot on that list you need to do. >> i think i'll just be able to do much more stuff then. >> reporter: the seven-year-old was born with a congenital heart defect that affects one in 1,000 children born each year. doctors say the valve in max's pulmonary artery was underdeveloped. doctors inserted a new valve helping his heart function and helping max to be like other kids. >> running and playing was becoming more difficult for him. as we know max, he was a real competitor so he wanted to keep up with his friends. >> doctors say they expect max to make a full recovery, but he'll have to rest at home at least six weeks. he'll do that in mom and dad's

bed when you funned up before the surgery. >> he looked around and said if i'm going to be in the house all summer, it needs to be more fun. waiting for the force to return. doctors expect max to stay here for a few more days, about a total of five days. they say that replacement valve should last anywhere between 10 and 15 years, which, ann, we'll make sure max gets time to enjoy being a kid until he becomes an adult. >> good news he's out of the surgery and doing better. michelle franzen, thank you so much this morning. still ahead the countdown is on. justin bieber takes the stage for a full 8:30 half hour. but first, this is "today." then justin has convinced me to do something i have never done before. >> are you scared? >> a little bit nervous about that. should be interesting. justin has lined up a couple of special guests who will join him as well, coming up. >> i think they will make the crowd very happy. begin this half hour in florida on a serious story. the prosecution is expected to rest its case today at the trial of a teenager accused of instigating a brutal attack on a classmate, this after the victim took the stand thursday. thanh truong joins us. good morning. >> reporter: ann, good morning to you. for the first time since he was severely burned, 14-year-old michael jackson brewer testified against the teenager accused of being the ringleader on the stand. at times he was frustrated about the attack and surprisingly admitted he lied about some of the stories. minutes after michael brewer took the witness stand thursday, he described the events in 2009 that led to him being set on

fire. >> i just remember a cold liquid going down my back. i started walking and i started feeling burning, then i started running. >> reporter: with flame on his body, brewer ran to a nearby pool and jumped in. >> i could see skin hanging from my arms. i thought i was going to die. >> reporter: prosecutors claim now 17-year-old matthew bent charged with second degree murder instigated the attack, that he offered money to other teens to douse brewer in rubbing alcohol. the defense countered on cross-examination. >> you at no time ever heard him tell anybody to pour anything on you, did you? >> no, i didn't. >> you at no time ever saw him or heard him tell anybody to set you afire, did you? >> no, i didn't. >> the repetitive, direct questions seemed to frustrate brewer. >> in my defense, they set me on

fire. >> reporter: in previous sworn statements, brewer said the attack happened after he and bent had a dispute over a $40 little mermaid video game. but on thursday brewer changed his story saying the fight was over a marijuana bowl he refused to buy from bent. >> you told us it wasn't about this, it was about a bowl. >> yes, sir. >> are you telling us you lied to us back when we took your deposition. >> yes, sir. >> the defense has argued bent was present at the scene the day of the fire but was never directly involved in the burning. >> you never saw him with any containers or anything in his hand. >> no, i didn't. >> two others teens have admitted their roles in the attack. one teen confessed to pouring the alcohol on brewer. the other said he flipped the lighter that set him ablaze. both have testified it was all bent's idea. those teens took plea deals and are now in prison. an emotional brewer left court on thursday wiping away tears after recounting the horrific day.

according to a new report many banks are charging americans excessive and confusing fees. senior investigative correspondent lisa myers has details on this story. lisa, good morning to you. >> reporter: matt, good morning. with so many americans living on financial edge, a new report cautions your own checking account can be hazardous to your financial health. it warns consumer can be hit with excessive overdraft cost, hidden fees and in comprehensible disclosure agreements. two years after reforms designed to curb abuses, many banks are still getting rave reviews from their customers. >> also some hidden transaction that's going to catch up with you two weeks later and, bam, you have an overdraft. >> the new report from charitable trust says bank practices are putting kurps at financial risk through high and unexpected cost through little benefit. it says the typical checking

account now has as many as three dozen fees, some of them exotic. empty envelope fee, self-service fee, even a fee for counting coins. >> we don't know what a lot of these fees are but they are in the disclosures. >> reporter: the report says overdraft fees, which generated $29.5 billion last year, remains excessive and are especially damaging to families like steve dolan's, which live paycheck to paycheck. this week dolan accidentally overdrew his account by $150 and got hit with $102 in penalties, which he calls predatory. he thinks it's all about sagging bank profits. >> they had to do something so they decided to go after people like myself, the working class, who they can count on overdrafting now and then. >> reporter: banks admit they are under financial pressure and say all the fees are necessary to recover what it costs them to service checking accounts, an average of $250 each year. they insist all their practices

are spelled out in checking account disclosure agreements which now run an average of 69 pages. richard hunt is a spokesman for the banking industry. but a 69-page disclosure. >> we don't like. we don't like it. >> do you think any consumer can comprehend it. >> i know i can't. >> why do you do it? >> we have to. all the regulations passed by congress and regulators force us to do so. we have to protect ourselves from liability. >> reporter: consumers who have a dispute with their bank can take it to arbitration. there's a catch here, too. some banks have carried in the fine print a requirement consumers play all the bank expenses and attorneys fees even if the bank loses. matt. >> so it's a win-lose for the consumer. all right, lisa. thank you very much. coming up a one-on-one with justin bieber before he gets to the concert stage, but first these messages. -my shoulders know. know. the vice president. okay. but it was so real in my head, you know? >> here's the difference. hoda and i adored our fathers, but my daddy had a very long and very painful illness, about eight years from beginning to end. you lost your dad suddenly. >> yeah. i was in college. he had a heart attack. it was like healthy. i never got to say good-bye. those kind of things are hard. what's interesting about women who lost their dads, no matter what age, a lot of women like that i find are kind of ambitious. i wonder what that's about. sometimes it's sort of the itch you can't scratch. you keep pushing yourself because you want someone to say you did good. once someone says that you feel like you can rest. until that, and when you know that's not coming, even though you feel that anyway. >> we lost them but feel -- i'm so grateful i had a man like that in my life as my dad for the years i had him.

i can't even begin to talk about how priceless a gift it was to have a dad like that. i know you feel the same way. there is a tree outside our house that i wrote a song about when i found out daddy was going to hospice. there is this tree. it was the coldest, windiest, worse day in november. it was november 13th. i remember going out. i prayed, god, you just have to tell me that it's going to be okay, you know. there was one leaf hanging off this tree. just one. it was such a picture of my dad's life. i wrote this song that i put in a little musical called "under the bridge" called "he is with you." he comes before and gone on with you. >> wish your father a happy father's day this weekend. >> you never know when the last chance to hug him will be. >> there are good tv dads.
