good morning, everyone. i'm barbara harrison. friday, june 15th, 2012. we have breaking news from fairfax county now. police say someone, possibly a student, shot some sort of soft gun or bb gun outside of rocky road middle school. police say at least one student was hit. rescuers described the injuries as nonlife threatening. meanwhile, police are looking for the shooter. the school is not on lockdown at this time. this happens to be the last day of classes at this school. a high-end casino coming to

prince george's county. we're waiting for the announcement from national harbor developers and a vegas casino company. a deal is in the works, maryland lawmakers must approve the plan. megan mcgrath is live at national harbor and has more on this. megan, tell us about it. >> barbara, in about 15 minutes, that's when we're expecting this major announcement to come down. the casino giant mgm has reached a deal and is going to push forward with a plan to build a high-end casino at national harbor. there's still a lot of work to be done. maryland lawmakers need to pass some legislation and, ultimately, maryland voters need to approve the deal, but today's announcement is a huge first step. it's a prime piece of real estate along the potomac river with convention center, shops and restaurants, national harbor has become a premier destination in prince george's county and soon there may be another reason to visit. a high-end las vegas-style

casino. >> i think it would be fun for a lot of people. i'm not a gambler, but my husband is, my mom is. it would be fun. >> reporter: mgm, the biggest casino operator in sin city wants to build an upscale casino result at national harbor and we're not just talking slot machines, but card tables, as well. county executive baker is thrilled. >> the best location on the east coast and it will bring in lots of money for the state and for prince george's county. >> reporter: not everyone is so sure. some who live and work in the area are worried about the possible traffic impact. >> it all depends what they do as far as the traffic control and, you know, we've heard pros and cons from our guests and residents of national harbor. >> and this big announcement is happening in annapolis and, again, in just a few minutes, 15 minutes or so. so, later on in the show, we'll bring you more details as soon

as we learn the workings of this deal. reporting live, megan mcgrath. >> we can't wait to hear the rest of this. thank you so much, megan. >> sure. turning to the weather now and those clearing skies just beautiful out there right now. tom kierein joins us with the first forecast. hey, tom. >> that is a picture of perfection. >> sure is. >> absolutely gorgeous day under way. around the entire region, we've got low humidity in place and just a few puffy clouds popping up. high pressure pushing in from the north and this high-pressure system giving us the dry air and it's going to be sort of locked in place here for the next several days. definitely sun block weather if you're going to be out for a length of time at the beaches or around the bay as the sun is, of course, reaching its highest angle of the year. you get a quick burn if you're not protected. look at all these areas. all the yellow in the 70s and all of virginia and maryland and breeze off the ocean, though,

cool in ocean city and just at 70 there, but inland away from the waters, well into the mid-70s and areas in green still in the 60s and right above the blue ridge above 2,000 feet and as well as the highlands of western maryland and west virginia. already nearal 0 parts of southern monica lewinsky and near fredericksburg and for the rest of the afternoon, mostly sunny and just a few clouds floating through and reach the mid-80s. big game at national park and forecast for that and father's day weekend and next week all coming up in a few minutes, barbara. >> thank you, tom. right now fairfax county police fired up a cool down aggressive driver's plan. today they're kicking off "operation summer heat" aimed at stopping wrecklereckless drivin. tracee wilkins has more on this program that is sure to make drivers sweat. >> reporter: if you are caught driving aggressively, you're going to feel the heat.

wree watched officer kevin gant as he kicked off the first day of "operation summer heat" in tyson's corner. h.e.a.t. for help eliminate aggressive traffic and we couldn't believe what we saw. the first driver was going so fast, she didn't stop and it appears she didn't even see him in the road. >> blow the whistle, wave my arms hoping the car will at least attempt to slow down seeing a person in the road. >> reporter: an example of aggressive driving and exactly what h.e.a.t. is after. you have your driver's license with you? most of our stops are from speeding, whether it's 15 and above or 20 above. >> reporter: last year fairfax county officers gave more than 142,000 tickets for aggressive driving offenses, like speeding, improper passing or lane changing and tailgating. >> that car right there is 60.

when you get into aggressive driving or speeding, one just kind of catapults to the other. >> reporter: operation h.e.a.t. will run from today through september 3rd. but orvesh that doesn't mean the end to all of your good driving. in fairfax county, i'm tracee wilkins, news 4. well, you may notice some changes today if you use the memorial bridge in or out of the city. the park service has begun tweaking dozens of signs and adding roadway markings to try to make memorial circle a little less confusing and a lot safer. it also plans on movesing one of the crosswalks further away from the circle to keep pedestrians and bicyclists safe. park police say they have had to deal with a number of accidents at this circle, which many drivers consider one of the most confusing traffic spots in our area. and speaking of traffic, let's check in with danella sealock on this friday morning. any problems out there? >> heading down i-95 in virginia

making your way southbound, you'll start to see delays by route 123. pretty slow past the occoquan and this is what it continues to look like and it looks better for you along i-95 in virginia. let's look at route 50 in maryland this time. from the capital beltway as you make your way out to annapolis and even to the toll plaza. no accidents or major delays. if you're thinking about heading to the beach, now is the perfect time to do it. the water is just perfect, but your travel lanes are nice and open. barbara, back over to you. >> thanks, danella. how a car crashed into a georgetown home. happened in the 1500 block of 28th street last night. police say the driver whose car has diplomatic plates stayed on the scene after the crash. fire crews determined the house was not structurally sound so at least one person will have to find temporary housing. in less than an hour, friends and family will gather for a candlelight vigil to

remember a beloved d.c. deli owner. she was found shot to death at her northeast store, grace deli. the 64-year-old ran the popular deli since 2004 and was planning to retire next year. police believe it was an attempted robbery and they're still looking for a suspect. the vigil is at the grace deli at seventh and eighth streets northeast starting at noon. a maryland man is behind bars accused of killing the owner of a virginia dunkin' donuts. police arrested ali after searching his home in prince george's county. officers found patel dead near his apartment on winter third lane after a report of a fight. detectives say ali was a family friend of patel and helped patel open his dunkin' donuts in hunter woods plaza. also in fairfax county police believe a stove caused a carbon monoxide leak.

detectors went off on blake lane. nine people from two lanes reported symptoms of co poisoni poisoning. they all went to the hospital and firefighters sealed the faulty gas line. your ride to work this morning may have been light any other, but come next week, your trip could be less crowded and a whole lot quicker. a new rush hour program called rush plus comes to metro on monday. it will add more trains to some of the heaviest travel sections of the orange and yellow lines. you'll also want to keep an eye on your destination. some orange line trains will now travel to largo town center on the blue line and some yellow line trains will travel between greenbelt on the green line and franconia springfield on the blue line. they now appear as dashed lines. you might want to avoid using your phone or ipod on metro. the transit system says thefts on the devices of those devices and pick pocketing, too, has more than doubled in the first

three months of this year. aggravated assaults and bike thefts are also up. crime in parking lots and on other, on the other hand have actually been cut in half, believe it or not. down from 63 reported crimes or to 63 from 120 just last year. metro says that's because they have increased patrols in those parking lots and garages. ten minutes after 11:00 is the time now and coming up in a change in the immigration policy. we have the breaking details for you coming right up. grabbed a lot of attention on the highway where you could be seeing those military drones or at least one of them. we'll tell you, coming up next. and the heartstopping walk taking place tonight

the obama administration is offering immunity to younger illegal immigrants. homeland security will stop deporting and begin giving work permits to those who came to the u.s. before the age of 16 and are younger than 30 years old. they also must have no criminal history, have a high school diploma or ged or served in the military. the move comes as president obama aims to gain support of latino voters and those opposed to his administration's

deportation policies. president obama is expected to discuss the new policy at the white house rose garden some time this afternoon. meanwhile, mitt romney begins a marathon bus tour today in new hampshire the republican presidential candidate plans on visiting six battleground states over the next six days. perhaps the most important state this election year, ohio. the president blasted his likely opponent for a proposed tax hike. the president claims would only help the wealthiest americans. romney slammed president obama for how he spent taxpayers' dollars. >> the only tax breaks and deductions that get you anywhere close to $5 trillion are those that help middle class families afford health care and college. and retirement. and home ownership. >> this president has put together, he has put together almost as much public debt as all the prior presidents combined.

you want four more years of that? that's forward over a cliff. >> both candidates are also taking to the airwaves to attack each other as you just saw. they launched new ads that are running in key battleground states right now. apparently control the district's finances for another five years. mayor vincent gray is expected to offer d.c. chief financial officer another five-year term. the d.c. council would have to approve gray's nomination but many political analysts say that is likely to happen. he has been in charge since he was appointed back in the year 2000. if you saw or thought you saw what looked like a ufo on the beltway this week, you can expect to see it, again, this summer. this time it will be in the sky. the military will fly a drone near the naval air station and along the chesapeake bay in the

coming months. maryland police escorted the unmanned aircraft to the military facility on wednesday night and many drivers who saw it swore they were seeing a flying saucer. twitter blew up with pictures of a so-called beltway ufo. and developing this morning in colorado. firefighters are issuing more evacuation orders as a massive wildfire spreads. the high park fire in larimir county was sparked on saturday by a lightning strike and now 15% contained and scorched more than 50,000 acres. overnight the fire jumped a major river that crews had hoped would slow the fire down. fighting the fire has already cost more than $7 million and has damaged or destroyed more than 100 homes. and we have more now on breaking news out of fairfax county. police say someone, possibly a student, shot some sort of pellet or bb gun outside rocky

middle school. erica can tell us more about what happened. good morning. >> fairfax county public schools and officials here on location as well as the fairfax county police department. they tell us shortly before the 10:00 hour, they got a call that two students, a boy and a girl, had been shot at with some sort of projectile. still some yellow tape up on the scene. police have told us that they were able to apprehend a group of juveniles. no word if they were charged with anything or arrested. a group of juveniles have been apprehended and the two students were injured. one of them had to be transported to the hospital, but we're told that they are not serious injuries. again, a boy and a girl here at rocky run middle school in chantilly injured by some sort of projectile that was shot. it looks like the house where these juveniles was apprehended was just across a fence from the

middle school. so, very short proximity and today is the last day of school for these students. fairfax county public schools tell us that normal operations have resumed and the school was never on lock down and they are going on with their day, as scheduled. barbara? >> all right, erica. thank you so much for that report. storm 4 meteorologist tom kierein is here right now to tell us what kind of weather we've been enjoying since early this morning when the sun was out. beautiful temperatures, too. >> a couple days ago matt cain and san francisco pitched a perfect game and today the sky is pitching perfect weather. it is absolutely gorgeous. i call that a home run sky, barbara. isn't that spectacular. a live view from our city  camera. a few puffy clouds over the monuments in washington and absolutely gorgeous. the temperature at reagan national now 76. right in the middle of the

the fancy food show will be held on sunday through tuesday at the washington convention center. 180,000 products will be displayed at that show. among them, first fresh olive oil and lots of olive oils, actually. bill sanders joins us to talk about the best ways to use and taste olive oils. great have an olive oil expert here. a lot of us use it, but don't really know what we're looking for. >> barbara, first, thank you for having me. i'm excited to be here and it

really is. i think the challenge is that people hear every day about how healthy it is and how flavorful it is, but, unfortunately, consumers aren't getting the real deal too often. >> we want to know what the real deal is. i guess i always thought that you looked for the darkest green olive oil. so many of the bottles are dark anyway they're hard to see or cans these days. what should you look for in terms of color if. >> actually, color is irrelevant. in fact, professional testings they put the oil in a blue glass so you will not be bias. they called it lick ed ied it l not liquid green. it will be an emerald green once it's out of the mill but in the bottle turn to a golden color, but it's pretty much irrelevant. the reason for the dark bottles because air, light and heat are the enemies of olive oil. it is protect the vitamin e in the oil from the light.

right now on news 4 midday, developers with the national harbor and mgm resorts international just announced they reached an agreement to bring a high-end casino to prince george's county. include 4,000 video slot machines and 250 game tables and retail shops, restaurants and a luxury hotel. maryland governor martin o'malley would need to call a special session of the general assembly to approve this plan. that could happen as early as july 9th to get it on the november ballot for voters to approve another casino in the state.

the trial of jerry sandusky is on hold until monday and the prosecution is expected to rest its case. the last of the eight accusers took the stand yesterday. victim number nine told the jurors sandusky abused him multiple times starting around the age of 11. investigators found the boy's name along with other alleged victims in an address book in sandusky's home with stars next to those names. they believe his defense team will soon have the very difficult task of proving their client's innocence. >> the prosecution did very well given the number of compelling witnesses that were presented this week. the defense will be hard pressed to over come that case. >> the defense is expected to call its first witness early next week. sandusky has pleaded not guilty to all of the charges. police in prince george's county need your help this morning to find a moon who sexually assaulted a teenager. take a close look at the sketch. police say this man approached two sisters tuesday night near

easy street in temple hills. he pointed the gun at the 15 and 26-year-old sisters and forced them into a wooded area where he sexually assaulted the younger girl. the older sister was able to knock the suspect to the ground and they both were able to escape. a chicago area couple is in jail after police say they found their kids blindfolded and bound in a walmart parking lot. a shopper spotted a boy and girl, age 5 and 7 with their hands tied to an suv and their eyes covered. three older children, age 12, 13 and 15 were with them but not restrained. the children are now in protective custody. bonds for both parent were set at $50,000. well, if you're headed to the beach this weekend, you may not be as quick to jump in the water after you hear this story. four swimmers in myrtle beach were treated yesterday for some sort of animal bites. not 100% clear if the bites came from a shark but based on the tooth pattern of one of the

bites, one doctor believes a shark is the culprit. portions of the beach were closed for about an hour, but they are expected to be open this morning. and it sure looks like beach weather out there right now. tom kierein, what is it going to be like this weekend? >> water temperatures still pretty chilly. in the 60s. only low 70s over the weekend. look at that sky over washington, absolutely gorgeous. some white top, gray bottom clouds floating in a satin blue sky over the monuments on this wonderful friday, the 15th day of june, 76 now at reagan national. comfortably dry, a light northeasterly breeze and temperatures all around the region with lots of sunshine and a few clouds in the shenandoah valley as well as around the metro area. into the 70s all around the region and peak in the low 80s over the next couple of hours. clear, great weather for the red hot nats taking on the yankees tonight and then day games tomorrow and again on sunday with first pitch times around

1:00 and it will be in the 70s to near 80 during the afternoons. over the weekend with low humidity and great weather continuing into monday, too. but getting hotter and more humid as we get into tuesday, wednesday, thursday next week probably hit near 90 each day and then only a slight chance of an afternoon thunderstorm, as well. that's the way it looks right now, barbara? >> thank you, tom. a fox news anchor knows d.c. police are cracking down on drivers who are not using hands-free devices for their phone calls. an officer pulled over chris wallace while he was on the radio, actually. the fox news sunday host was doing a live phone interview yesterday morning when he was suddenly interrupted. >> i'm going to have a problem here. >> what's that, buddy? >> i'm talking to you on a cell phone and there's a policeman here and i probably shouldn't have been talking to you on a cell phone. probably going to be arrested. good-bye. >> a fox news spokesperson says

the officer did not arrest wallace. it's unclear whether the officer ticketed him, though. we'll check on the midday traffic, again, danella, how is it looking on the roads? >> a problem in the northwest. watching the roads and rhode island avenue is closed from 11th street to logan circle while fire department is responding to a fire in that area. please, avoid the area. let's head down i-95. if you're heading down i-95 south in virginia, starting to see delays as you approach 123 and they continue. here's a live look at the occoquan. pretty sluggish. these delays continue as you pass dale city and then you look pretty good as you continue your trip southbound. barbara, back over to you. >> major track work on metro could interrupt your weekend plans. on the blue line stations will be closed. shuttle buses available at eisenhower avenue, but blue line trains will also run along the yellow lynn to the huntington station.
