in policy, as president obama announces plans to allow some illegal immigrants to work in this country without the fear of deportation. emotions run high as the h street community pays tribute to a popular deli owner who was shot and killed as she opened for business. prince georges county is closer to bringing that vegas-style casino to the national harbor. good evening. i'm wendy rieger. >> and i'm j. that policy change impacts those brought into this country before the age of 16 and have lived here for at least five years. the announcement impacts some 800,000 immigrants, living in fear of deportation. >> the announcement sparked both tears and criticism. erica joins us live with more. >> reporter: richard, the new immigration policies has supporters saying they've been waiting years to see this from the president, since he was

elected. meanwhile, opponents say this strikes a major blow to the u.s. workforce. it doesn't grant citizenship, but that doesn't seem to matter. >> we want to congratulate president obama on finally taking a stand. >> reporter: people are rejoicing about the president's announcement on a more relaxed rule for younger illegal immigrants. >> they are americans in their hearts, in their minds, in every single way but one -- on paper. >> reporter: hundreds marched in front of the white house chanting "victory." the policy applies to those younger than 30 who came to the u.s. before the age of 16, have no criminal history, successful students, or those who have served in the military. >> i went to the detention center, they took me and my mom in. >> reporter: the department of homeland security will no longer deport immigrants. >> we were given a one-year

immigration lawyers association today. many of them were featured in a "time" magazine story about undocumented immigrants. they say the change in policy will change their lives. >> i am just really, really happy. i think that for us this is the realization of a lot of work we have been doing for a very long time. it shows that our community can no longer be ignored. >> some told us they wished the announcement had come sooner, better you glad it happened. two middle school students were shot with a bebe gun on the last day of school. police say a 14-year-old boy and 13-year-old girl both his, not seriously jufrd. police caught up with the group of kids involved. they are in custody and charges are pending. the suspects are not students at rockie run. a vigil was head today. the 64-year-old woman was killed

closer to reality. mgm announced plans to bring a high-end casino to prince georges county. thoughs plans would include more than just slots. derrick ward joins us with more. if you look around, there's lots of room for expansion. there was a meeting in annapolis, the developer, and the head of a major enter tame venue, that could determine the future for this part of prince georges county. welcome to oxman hill or national harbor as it's known these days. the upscale destination could well be on its way. >> to explore the development, a resort where we combined with the peterson family would be prepared to invest over $800

million. >> reporter: the site is expected to generate 2,000 construction jobs and 4,000, quote, well-paying permanent jobs. the announcement comes after a study's findings that the state could support a sixth gaming license, much to the chagrin of the corporation behind maryland live, the just-opened casino. it would allow table games at all maryland casinos and call for a lowering of the tax rate. there weren't many indications of what it would look like, but more of what it would not. >> we're not going to drop las vegas in national harbor. >> we're excited about the opportunity to basically go intoed planning and make another mini national harbor. >> we look forward to the process going forward where the committee will make a recommendation. >> then it would be on to a voter referendum, it all has to

two former metro employees are going to prison for stealing more than a half million from fare card machines so they could buy lottery tickets.

former police officer john halle was sentenced to three years. former revenue tech notion horace mcdade. halle received a longer sentences, because he refused to say where he got the keys that aided the defense. . if your commute on metro was a little crowded, things could be different next week. metro is making changes to reduce congestion during the morning and afternoon rush with a new program called rush-plus. metro is putting the rush in the rush hour. the agency is adding stops at 21 station and new trains to ease the congestion when most people are trying to get to work or back home. >> a little panicked here. >> reporter: the program runs monday through friday from 6:30 to 9:00 a.m. and again from 3:30 to 6:00 p.m. the dash lines show the changes

coming monday. the orange line will get six additional trains during peak teems to replace the orange crush with the orange rush, but these trains will run along the blue line and won't reach new carroll ton. >> it's the most crowded place. that's where the trains are the most packed. >> the trains are too overcrowded. that's what's causing the problems. >> the green, yellow and blue lines will also see changes. >> extra trains could be a very positive thing. >> green and blue line chains will become yellow. that means you can go from green belt all wang to fran konya springfield without a transfer. metro is on track to add the silver line next year. with all the changes it's important to pay attention. >> folks want to make sure they're checking the destination signs. >> the red line is the 07b8 line

not affected by the program. all the those changes start monday morning. out in colorado, that massive wildfire has been burning for seven days. an official today issued more evacuation orders in the hyde park area in colorado. the fire jumped a major river. the crews had hoped that river could slow it down. it didn't. more than 50,000 acres have burned so far. hundreds of homes are destroyed, and this fire is only contained about 15%. >> they really need rain. >> and i think it would be weeks before they really get it contained the way they need to. for so many other parts of the west, too, they need the monsoon rains to kick in. of course around here it's like a weather mental health day. when the weather is so great, don't you feel better? that extra singe. zing in your step? we've been spending all day trying to perk richard up.

us, almost the cloud-free skies, pennsylvania down toward the south of north carolina, all thanks to this big area of high pressure. then we'll see a big dome of high pressure, a big bubble of heat that will build the second half of the weekend. there we are at 9:00 a.m. saturday morning, we'll pick up a phi high clouds, especially areas east of the coast, and then a few additional clouds on sunday, also around the coast, but off to the west with yet another weather system that will start coming into the areas. that system really will fall apart as it crosses the mountains on monday, but we'll see the heat build, hot, hazy conditions, not just here, but for area auld through the eastern third half of the country. 68 to 74, we're nice, breezy, we're comfortable. tomorrow morning a terrific start, 52 to 62 degrees right in

president obama announced today that undo you remembered young people brought here by their parents can apply for work permits and stay in the u.s. for the next two years without the fear of deportation. this new program does not change status or provide a path to citizenship. a lot of republicans are fiercely opposed. in the course of the day, a murder scene has been transformed into a shrine in memory of the victim. family and friends of 64-year-old june lim held a vigil today at the deli shot where she was shot and killed yesterday. police say the motive was rob robbery. so as far as no arrests. mgm wants to build a complex to include slot machines, table games a luxury hotel. the maryland general assembly would need a special session to approve this. voters would also need to approve it in a referendum. let's fast forward to our beautiful weather, veronica.

above a moving lane. the bucket was struck by a tractor trailer and the worker was knocked out. luckily he was wearing a safety harness, and the co-workers were able to bring him to the ground. he's in the hospital with nonlife threatening injuries. chopper 4 captured the messy scene at the intersection. 5,000 gallons of raw milk spilled, mixed with the tanker's diesel fuel, so a dirt barrier was put up as hazmat crews came in to mop it up. police searching for a man who sexually assaulted a teenager. police say the man approached two sisters near easy street and temping drive. he pointed a gun and forced them into a wooded area where investigators say he sexually assaulted the younger girl. the older sister was able to knock him to the ground.

if you had a baby last year, brace yourself. you can expect to spend nearly a quarter of a million dollars before your child even gets to college. an annual report from the department of agriculture finds the average middle-income family with a baby born in 2011 will spend about $235,000, raising that kid until age 17, that is a 3.5% increase from a year earlier. housing is the single biggest expense, followed by child care.

we know that flag one is coming up, too. the first question is from lisa. she wants to know about the sunscreen does it make it more effective? >> the food & drug administration gave us this answer. it says some sunscreen products may become less effective under high temperature because of this, the fda will require sunscreens to have a new label telling consumers to product sun screens from excessive heat and direct sun. however the labels won't be required until decent 17th of 2012. so yes, keep it out of hot, hot surf. the next question from tina in 345erland, she wants to know where she can donate the old question. >> goodwill, by the way, books for americans and salvation army hemmed us with this answer. it will september all textbooks and reading materials as there is a high demand for these items. salvation army also accepts them.

and books of america is a local nonprofit, which accepts books that are less than 3 years old. so lots of places to do it. >> i didn't realize this, patricia reminded us of this. september that since yesterday was flag day, she decided to replace her old worn american flag and buy a new one. what is the proper and respectful way? >> there is a proper way to dispose of an american flag. according to the u.s. flag code, actually. it says that when a flag has used its purpose, preferably by burning, but the code goes on to say it should be done discreetly, so the act is not perceived as a protest of desecration. the american league told us that many american legion posts collect old flags and will do that proper disposals fors during a flag retirement ceremony. if you have a question you
