>> a great success. >> no, it was crazy. the girls were screaming. >> enormous crowd. the songs were top notch. it was all perfect. >> father's day coming up this weekend. it's a wonderful time for families. sad time for those who either never knew their father and more and more that seems to be the case in this world or have no relationship with your father. for people such as hoda and myself who feel like we've been eternally blessed to have the fathers we had. my dad eppy with cass when she was little. it will be ten years this november since daddy went to be with the lord. what about you, hoda? where is your picture? i love that. >> yes. that's my dad back in the day. i'm the one with the anchor on her shirt. let's not discuss that outfit or her hair. that's an old picture, my sister obviously in the middle. i thought my dad was larger than life. i used to have dreams that he was the president.

and when i woke up -- when you believe something, i was like of course he is, but in the dream they said since your dad was not born in this country he can only be the vice president. okay. but it was so real in my head, you know? >> here's the difference. hoda and i adored our fathers, but my daddy had a very long and very painful illness, about eight years from beginning to end, and you lost your dad suddenly. >> yeah. i was in college. he had a heart attack. it was like healthy, happened at the gym. i never got to say good-bye. those kind of things are hard. what's interesting about women who lost their dads, no matter what age, a lot of women like that i find are kind of ambitious. i wonder what that's about. sometimes it's sort of the itch you can't scratch. you keep pushing yourself because you want someone to say, you did good. once someone says that you feel like you can rest. until that, and when you know that's not coming, even though you feel that anyway.

>> even though we lost them but feel -- i'm so grateful i had a man like that in my life as my dad for the years i had him. i can't even begin to talk about how priceless a gift it was to have a dad like that. i know you feel the same way. there's a tree outside our house that i wrote a song about when i found out daddy was going to hospice. there is this tree. it was the coldest, windiest, worst day in november. it was november 13th. i remember going out, and i prayed, god, you just have to tell me that it's going to be okay, you know. and there was one leaf hanging off this tree. just one. it was such a picture of my dad's life. i wrote this song that i put in a little musical called "under the bridge" called "he is with you." he comes before and gone on with you. >> wish your father a happy father's day this weekend.

on this happy father's day "today" we are celebrating the 2 million stay-at home dads in this country. >> 30% plan to stay at home indefinitely. ian kerner is a sex and relationship expert. john step foford has been a stay-at-home dad for two years, scott wyman has been a stay at home dad for the past seven years. >> a growing phenomenon. >> absolutely. three times as many stay-at-home dads today as a decade ago. >> how much of that is the economy, would you say? >> i think a lot of it is the economy. according to this baby center survey, over 60% of dads say it's the best job they could ever have. hard times can yield great opportunities. >> john, is it the best job for you?

>> definitely. i wouldn't change it at all. i get to do everything that i never did in the past with them. i could do it with them day by day and it's fantastic. >> you're outside of the home a lot. look what he does. cubmaster to 50 cub scouts, little league coach and cpr instructor and a local emt. >> did you get laid off from your job? what happened? >> yes. i worked for a large manufacturing facility. we were bought out by another facility. they came in and just laid off the middle management staff and decided to stay with their own. >> couldn't be helped. >> not at all. >> scott, tell us about your situation. >> i was in between jobs around the same time my wife found out she was pregnant. we looked at our scenario and it seemed to make sense. we really wanted someone to be home.

her job had a burgeoning level of flexibility. that helped us make the decision. >> i like your expression. >> they are 7 and 5? >> yeah. i've been with them since the beginning. >> there are challenges obviously. when you're at the bus stop there are a lot of the moms dropping off. what is the most challenging part of being a stay-at-home dad? >> i think adjusting to them. they feel comfortable with me being there. i feel comfortable with them being there as well. i think it's just the adjustment that you need to make to be the father versus the mother being at the bus stop. >> i was going to ask one last question to the two of you. if you were offered the job of your dreams right now, what would you do? >> i'd have to speak with my wife. yeah, i would probably take it. i can't take back what i get right now at home. absolutely not. >> of course not. >> again, according to the baby

center survey, only 30% of men see this as a temporary situation. so there is a lot of restlessness. i work with a lot of stay-at-home dads. they're happy and it's a unique opportunity. >> they appreciate it. >> but there is a desire to get back in the work force. >> what about the wives resenting a little? you get to spend time with the kids, they come home from work and the kids are probably maybe more attached to you than to their moms. >> i think the situation is the same as you would have in any household. there are those little conflicts, those little back-and-forths, there's always going to be one parent who wishes they were with the kids more and always one parent who has more indepth knowledge of what's going on. if you work it together, then it's always going to be fun. >> it's interesting to see men are discovering what women have known for centuries and centuries. there is a profound, singular joy being home raising the children. >> studies show dads can serve all the kids' biological needs. dads bring a lot of unique attributes to child rearing. they engage in more physical play.

>> absolutely. there are a lot of websites out there. when are you going? are you in peak season, off-peak or somewhere in between? kids off school, not off school? if you can change your dates a few days, be flexible, you can save a lot of money. >> how much do you think you can save? >> 20%, 30%. especially if you package it. if you go to travelocity, expedia, they get great discounts from hotels. from the flights, the car and airplane you can get 30%, 40% off by doing packages. and the brands, if you're a club member with marriott, hilton, peak season you can get 40% off. >> you say that you can walk into a nice hotel and ask for a discount while you are checking in. i never heard of that. >> this is a very competitive environment, between the recession, everything going on, there are a lot of hotels still being built. especially in new york and big cities. it's a competitive environment. if you guy into that front desk and you need a room and you're nice -- >> you don't have a reservation? >> if you don't have a reservation or if you do have a reservation, you know, i saw a price on a different site, i'd like a discount. absolutely.

>> they do it? >> absolutely. >> what are other ways to get discounts? >> how do you do it? >> there are many ways. you go to expedia, go to hotels.com and check out their rates. look at the first and second page. that's where the lowest prices are for hotels. then you go to the hotel's website. if their price is higher, you call them up directly and say i'd like a lower price. hotels try to book you directly because expedia hotels.com charge us 30%. >> it's better to call the hotel yourself. >> call directly and you get a better rate. >> what about the all-inclusive hotels with the meals and everything, are those good deals? >> i like them because who's the boss of the family? mommy, right? i've been married 19 years so i know that. when we travel, i'd like to be all-inclusive so my wife doesn't have to worry about the entertainment for the children, dinner, lunch and drinks. everything is done for you and mommy can take a break.

>> but is the quality good? >> absolutely. depending where you go, absolutely. again, you have to do your research. >> some of these hotels come with kitchens and extras. >> when you're traveling with a family, especially with a baby, you want to make your formula cold so you want to look for kitchens. the best place for that is extended stay hotels, like express suites or residence inn. >> you save a lot of money when you can cook some of your meals. >> absolutely. go to the grocery store, get cereal. cup of noodles. >> you're driving down the road, exhausted, long road trip, see a hotel because you've got to sleep. you say not a great idea? >> book tonight.com or bandb.com, you can get deals, but look for the branded hotels. especially when doing the show "hotel impossible." i'm going to a lot of non-branded hotels.
