cancel the huge financial bailout the country has received in order to keep the country's economy from collapsing. other european leaders who have lent the money say a vote for him is the equivalent of a vote to leave the euro. economistes say if that happens, they fear the financial ripple effect will be felt all over the world, even in the united states. tom, we're going to know the results of the vote sometime in the afternoon in the united states. back to you. >> michelle, thank you so much. staying overseas now, escalating violence in syria has forced u.n. observers to suspend operations. nbc's chief foreign correspondent richard engle is monitoring the operation from cairo. any hope the international peace plan survives? >> reporter: the international peace plan right now is frozen. the u.n. monitors say because their access has been denied, because when they go out on missions they have been attacked by mobs, they have been shot at by syrian forces, they declared that it was too dangerous for them to go out and suspended all operations.

the syrian opposition is accusing the united nations of cowardice. so right now, it is frozen. but it could get a major jump start depending on a meeting tomorrow between president barack obama and vladimir putin, if russia backs this peace initiative, which so far it has not been backing, it has been backing the syrian government. things could dramatically change. tom. >> richard engel live from cairo. thank you so much. one person is dead and three others hurt after a roof of an outdoor stage collapsed in toronto. police say crew members were setting up the stage last night when it came crashing down. the cause is still under investigation. back here in the states, this amazing video shows a massive fire at two under construction apartment buildings in indianapolis. no one was hurt, but the inferno was so intense, that construction materials across the street ignited. a nearby church caught fire. tim tebow, the new york jets backup quarterback, appears at

this. very comfortable temperatures. that was a look at the weather across the nation. here's a look in your neighborhood. >> good morning sunday morning. i'm storm 4 meteorologist chuck bell. there's the view outside this morning. a few fair weather cumulus clouds. it will be a nice day to be outside today. temperatures are now in the low to mid 60s across most of the metro area. a few spots back into the 50s. plenty of sunshine for dad and father's day. great weather for baseball or anything you want to do. back to work tomor >> tamron? >> all right, michelle, thank you. four mountain climbers are presumed dead today after an avalanche swept them away on alaska's mount mckinley. v veronica de la cruz has more. >> mount mckinley is the highest peak in north america. in the area where the avalanche hit was not known to be especially dangerous. but the climbers just appeared to be in the wrong place at the wrong time.

it was in the early hours of thursday morning, on mount mckinley's most popular trail. five climbers visiting from japan tethered together by a single rope. just below 12,000 feet. when they're swept downhill by an avalanche. when the ground settled, only one climber was alive, saved when a part of the rope he was holding broke loose, swinging him into a crevasse. this photo from the national parks service shows the aftermath of the massive slide. what looks like a tiny trench is actually that 60-foot deep area where the 69-year-old man was protected. when he emerged, he couldn't find his friends and had to make a 14-hour climb down another 4,000 feet by himself to summon help. the national parks service is presuming the four others are dead, even as more than 400 rescuers battle snow and wind to try and find their bodies. the only sign of them so far, this lone red flag.

a reminder that the lure of nature can come with a price. now the ages of the climbers ranges from 50 to 64. so far their pictures have not been released. tamron? >> veronica de la cruz, thank you. here's jenna. tamron, thanks. now to politics. mitt romney is back on the road again today, taking his bus tour to the crucial battleground state of ohio. the presenidential challenger i trying to convince americans he's more in touch with the economy than president obama is. peter alexander is in brunswick, ohio, with more. peter, good morning. >> reporter: jenna, good morning to you and happy father's day. mitt romney will be enjoying his father's day here in brunswick, ohio, at a pancake breakfast, weather permitting. it was pouring moments ago. he'll be joined by his wife ann, two of his sons and a handful of their grandkids who frankly we saw running around the hotel last night. he faces a unique challenge, though, as he tries to attack the president for the economy. here in ohio, the economy is improving and the unemployment

rate is better than the national average. taking his case to conservative voters in rural pennsylvania, mitt romney turned a simple slip of the tongue into a sharp tongued attack on the president. >> he upon becoming elected governor -- excuse me, president last time, governor might be a better job for him to have started with. >> thank you. >> reporter: during one stop saturday on his every town counts tour, romney played a light hearted prank on the traveling press, leaving this note inside our bus, joking he had erased our hard drives. but the democrats weren't laughing. slamming romney for an incident before he left office as massachusetts governor, when romney's top aides reportedly erased his administration's e-mails from the server. day two also took a detour. the campaign bypassed a scheduled stop at a wah-wah convenience store where a crowd of democrats led by former pennsylvania governor ed rendell, also an nbc news

political analyst, were protesting. instead, romney pulled over at another wawa. and dismissed the detour. >> i understand i have a surrogate over there already, so we decided to come to a different place. my surrogate is former governor rendell who said i could win pennsylvania. >> reporter: republicans pounced on rendell after the obama supporters recent critiques of the president's past experience. >> i think the president was hurt by being a legislator only. >> reporter: after ordering a hoagie inside, romney told supporters how impressed he was by the ingenuity of the private sector. >> a great testament. >> pressed a little touch tone keypad, touch this, touch this, touch this. go pay the cashier, there is your sandwich. it is amazing. >> reporter: and while today is father's day, ann romney is a proud mother. her horse yesterday qualified to be a member of the u.s. olympic team. she was at the trial.

the equestrian trial in new jersey. here is a picture she tweeted out. the tweet, ann romney said, we're proud of jan that is the rider, and team usa. now let's bring home the gold. the romneys are hoping to spend some of their summer at the olympic games in london. jenna? >> peter alexander. peter, thank you very much. david gregory is moderator of "meet the press." david, good morning. >> good morning. >> so the campaign trail is in full effect. mitt romney and house speaker john boehner will be at an event today, first public event they'll be at together since romney became the republican nominee. de delicate relationship, romney wants boehner's support but wants to distance himself a little bit from congress, whose approval rating is now down to 17%. how does he walk the line between the two? >> well, jenna, the right question because you're right, he wants the support of boehner, particularly in this state where he's got to drive out conservative votes, particularly the southern part of ohio. but the president's a big effort here is to combine romney's view

of the economy and taxes and the budget deficit with an unpopular republican congress. and really marry the two of them and say this is just, you know, old line thinking. so that's where he does have to be important. the romney campaign is concerned about ohio for the reasons that peter laid out, the economy is doing better. the auto bailout has an impact, particularly in the northeastern part of the state. all of that can help them run a pretty effective campaign in the state. >> and the economy is his core and basically his sole focus as we approach the election here. he did make interesting comments yesterday regarding president obama's foreign policy. he said whatever obama did in israel, i would have done the opposite. how significant are those comments? >> well, i think there what you're seeing romney do is trying to target jewish votes in a state like florida, where they think they can make up a little bit of room because of a deteriorating relationship between netanyahu and obama. you've seen romney talk about his old friend, prime minister netanyahu. i think a lot of these

statements are more targeted to particular voting groups, in particular states that are going to be very important. >> meanwhile, president obama and his family, they're in chicago this weekend, for a wedding. this comes on the heels of president obama's new immigration policy. where are americans falling on this? the critic and how are they supporting him? >> i think we'll have to wait a little while to see how that continues to develop. what's clear is this is another attempted target, a key voting group, latino voters. the president wanted to break a stalemate over immigration and particularly what to do with children of illegal immigrants. this is an area where there is some bipartisan consensus and he wanted to plow through that. let's be honest, he also wanted to put mitt romney on the defensive. romney has a lot of ground to make up if he wants to compete for hispanic voters. the president wanted to jam him up a little bit, put him on the spot he has not supported a similar measure, though senator from florida, the republican marco rubio supported something very similar to what the

over 150,000 soldiers. all the royal family attended. you see her with prince william there. it was good to see prince philip. he was taken ill during the queen's diamond jubilee celebrations and spent five days in hospital. no doubt it was reassuring for the queen to have him back at her side. there he is on the balcony with him at the end. she certainly seemed to be relaxed and happy that he was back at her side, a big event. tamron. >> understandably so. also prince william has a big event this week. he turns 30 on thursday. do we know how the royals plan to celebrate another big occasion? >> that's right. a big day for him. remember, kate herself has already turned 30. well, they're saying they're qu. this couple, they're not wild, they're not like prince harry. they leave the big parties to him, he's the one that goes out to nightclubs and taken -- photos taken of him having a good time. they're going to do something quiet. last friday night, he stayed in

times in the head, killing him. the girl's grandfather says flores was a friend of a friend who came to the ranch to help the family care for horses. he says that afternoon the girl and her brother were out feeding chickens, but the brother soon came back and said a man had taken his sister. her father then went looking for her. after hearing his daughter scream, he found her half naked with flores. detectives say his pants and underwear were down when the father started hitting him. >> all indications we have is that he was in defense of a third person, which would be his daughter. >> reporter: the sheriff says the father's remorseful and has not been charged. many neighbors don't think he should be. >> people are just shocked by this, you know? but they feel that it is justified. >> reporter: a grand jury is expected to hear the case this week. for "today," gabe gutierrez, nbc news, atlanta. and now once again, here's tamron. >> jenna, thanks. he's on trial for his life. former penn state assistant

football coach jerry sandusky. and now after hearing witness after witness talk about how he allegedly sexually abused them, the defense is expected to present its case this week. nbc's john yang has a preview. >> reporter: shuttling between his home and the courthouse, jerry sandusky has been silent. his side will soon have its say in court as his lawyers defend him against the 52 charges of child sexual abuse he's pleaded not guilty to. on friday, the judge said the defense could present expert testimony about a personality disorder they say could explain some of his actions. a mental health expert will also be able to examine sandusky for the prosecution. the defense promised the jury they'll hear sandusky testify in his own defense, after hearing four days of testimony from the alleged victims. >> you have eight different people who came here and told their stories, some of which were very gut wrenching. he doesn't present his side of the story, i think he will --

the prosecution will win by default. >> reporter: the jury already heard sandusky's voice. the prosecution played an excerpt from his interview with bob costas on rock center, also broadcast on "today." >> are you sexually attracted to young boys, underaged boys? >> am i sexually attracted to underaged boys? >> yes. >> sexually attracted, i enjoy young people. i love to be around them. i but, no, i'm not sexually attracted to young boys. >> reporter: sandusky's wife dottie testifies, it will be the first time she's spoken publicly since the scandal erupted last year. the defense will likely call other young men who spent time with sandusky through his second mile charity for troubled kids and who say there was never any inappropriate behavior with them. the defense will also try to counter the accusers' detail and gut wrenching testimony. the young man known as victim nine said he would scream, telling him to get off me when

good to see you. >> good to see you too. >> let's start off with the criteria. what was the list? >> the list is -- these are all the new and innovative products that companies are coming out with, they're always trying to come up with great new ideas for consumers. some are ingredient innovations, some are packaging innovations and some are great new ways to use an old product innovation. >> tell me about the judges. >> the judges are consumers. >> every day people. >> every day people. it is done through tnf research. 50,000 people vote on all the best new products and the best innovations and what they feel are the great new products. >> okay. you have 22 winners. we have ten of them on the set. food items really popular. this is call ed microwave popcorn, but the bag turns into a bowl. >> you remember when you popped popcorn, you had that awful bag and you -- you're burning and you get all oily. this opens up and the popcorn is

already in the bowl. you don't have to make another dish dirty and easy to serve. >> orville redenbacher pop-up bowl. i was talking about this, the hair color. how can hair color be innovative. i thought we had pretty much settled. >> the one great thing about this, as you know, anybody who has done hair color, it drips, you waste a bunch, it gets lost. this is a foam, so you get -- there is no waste of the product, you use it all and no dripping. it goes in your hair and you have no drips all over your towel. >> nothing like that out now? >> there are some now, but this is one of the first ones that came out, so this -- >> they're the innovator in that market. very interesting. you have another food item on the list sierra mist natural. but as i understand it, the flavor stays the same. so why is this innovative? >> it is great that these products, like the natural bliss, they have taken all the bad products, bad ingredients out, so there is no high fructose corn syrup in there, all natural ingredients.

so it kept the same flavor, but with no bad ingredients and the same with the natural bliss. it is just four ingredients. >> how competitive is it to get on this list? i imagine that's part of the business, trying to stay on top of the game to get the consumer to buy in. >> right. all of these manufacturers, like i said, are really trying to come up with new and innovative products that help consumers, you know, get some great new things or actually things easier to use or better for them, just like snickers with the little peanut butter. >> you mentioned the snickers of the items on the table, which one could you not live with without right now? >> i'd have to say the off bug spray because as we know it is supposed to be a very buggy summer. and that is the one spray that isn't all greasy and awful, you know, when you put it on, the deet ones. >> you you don't look like you're glowing after you put it on. >> it doesn't slick off. that will be a useful item this summer, i think. >> good list of things. colleen, thank you very much. and here's jenna. tamron, thank you very much.
