off. have a little fun, for example, at the fountain. good afternoon, i'm pat lawson muse. >> and i'm jim handly. it is cooking out there, folks. it's dangerously hot to spend too long outdoors. veronica johnson is here in the cool of our studio to tell us just how hot it is out there. >> yeah, temperatures really rose very quickly today. behind me the current readings from 91 degrees in around gaithersburg, montgomery county 95, 97 in d.c. throughout the area. we've got some near-record heat, but take a look. this will give you a real good idea of just how quickly the temperatures rose today, from 80 degrees at 9:00 a.m., we jumped 11, by 11:00 a.m. before noontime already, the heat index, when you factor in the humanity was already over 95 degrees. 3:00 p.m. today, we hit a temperature of 97. that heat index over 100

degrees. that is exactly what you're looking at here. the heat index values 102 up in mount airie. call pepper, even stafford around waldorf at 100 degrees, so the heat advisory continues with a lot of hot air still around for the late afternoon and evening. that heat advisory continuing until 10:00 p.m., so really taking it easy out there. as far as any rain coming our way to give us some release, a look at the satellite and radar review. not anything to report. light showers down to the south around roanoke, wet down through the mountains of north carolina. so for your good night forecast, 93 by 7:00 p.m. we'll see temperatures stay in the mid and upper 80s through 9:00, 10:00 and 11:00 p.m. plenty, plenty warm out there. we have more heat to talk about, and that's what we're going to look at, temperatures for tomorrow, more record heat. >> thanks veronica. if you spend even a few

minutes outside you'll break into a sweat. >> many of you decided to wake up early and change up that routine. melissa reports from silver springs. >> reporter: the scorching sun ready to warm us up even early this morning, this could end up being the hottest day in the year for washington so far. it's especially tough, because weren't yet acclimated to this warm weather. riding bikes, jogging, getting that workout in before the temperature heads north. >> well, i have my water, i am doing it early, and i'll be back in within the hour. i'll stay in the remainder of the day. >> at community vision of interfaith works, a silver springs day program for the homeless, they're handing out water and keeping doors open today for anyone who needs to cool off. >> our building, of course is air-conditioned, so we allow people to come in and stay.

we open the conference room and let them come in and stay cool. >> reporter: most county heat advisory plans, as well as the districts', kick in once temperatures hit 95. then cool centers and many shelters and libraries open up for anyone needing a bit of a break. for those working outside, like these construction workers in northwest, it's a sticky, sweaty day, that easily puts them at risk for heatstroke. troy brown says his boss brings in extra water for their crews. it's all about staying hydrated. >> plenty of water, plenty of water, cold water, too. it will be hot out here. i know that from experience. it's going to be hot out here, traveling, pushing 80 degrees, it will take a lot out of you. joseph malone has two dogs he's tried to keep from the heat. he says he'll be staying in the shade and giving them both water. >> if you take some water and put it on their head and back and let them stay still, it will be okay. >> reporter: the very best thing

you can do is take a big bottle of water with you whenever you head outside in this hot weather, and of course, this could just be a taste of the next few days ahead, in silver springs maryland, melissa mollet, back to you. metto tells us passengers can drink water today and tomorrow because of the extreme heat. the exemption to the no-drinking policy applies only to water on buses, in stations, and aboard of trains. traffic is back rolling again on the bay bridge. the bridge was closed for about 45 minutes this afternoon while tugboats towed an oversized cargo ship up the bay. it was carrying four massive 14-story cranes, clears the bridge by only six feet. transportation officials were worried that drivers might become distracted by the sight of the crain. traffic was backed up for quite some time today. we're following a developing story.

a man is dead after a shooting today that involved metro transit police. it happens this afternoon aung laurieie lane. the man was being investigated in connection with an attempted abduction last weekend. police say the man opened fire on them and that they were forced to fire back. no police officers were injured. the jury could begin deliberations tomorrow in the jerry sandusky child sex abuse trial. the defense rested without putting the former penn state coach, who's accused of -- there is more from ben font, pennsylvania. >> reporter: engineer are sandusky's defense rested today without the former penn state football coach taking the witness day. though sandusky did not testify, his interviews and letters presented during the trial made him a potent witness. >> am i sexually attracted to underaged boys? >> yes. >> reporter: for the prosecution, still his attorney

looked upbeat as he left the courthouse. >> reporter: are you hopeful? >> reporter: the defense struggled to build a case around eight young accusers and former grad student mike mcquery who testified he saw san dulles. the defense tried to cast doubt on whether he actually saw or assumed he saw a crime. a family friend said he -- >> those two words "sexual sounds" that's what the jury will remember, and dranoff at the end of the day was ultimately a great witness for the prosecution. >> reporter: the defense also suggested that the accusers made up the stories or were urged to do so, david hilton, a friend of sandusky's told the court he was intimidated by police investigators. i felt like they wanted me to

say something that wasn't true, he said. hilton and another defense witness, both described meeting sandusky as youngsters and being invited to the home for numerous sleepovers. both remembered sandusky as a father figure. the jury has been told to report here at 9:00 a.m. toempl and expect to be sequestered until they reached a vertebra. in bellefonte, pennsylvania. hosni mubarak is in a coma this evening, but has recovered enough to be removed from life support. his attorney says he was transferred to a military hospital in cairo yesterday. that attorney claims he had at least one stroke earlier this month. the court sentenced mubarak to life in prison for kill protesters to put down a rebellion guns him. he attended the trial every day on a stretcher. a u.s. source claims that mubarak's conditions is re grave and he could have several days at best just a few weeks to live. a house subcommittee is about to vote on whether to hold

attorney general eric holder in contempt of congress. they say he has not produced documents they demanded into the investigation of the "fast and furious" sting operation. now he's drawing fire for doing that. steve handelsman has the rest of is the story. >> reporter: president obama made the move this morning, as he came back from mexico. his first invoking of executive privilege. denying house republicans more documents about operation fast and furious. everyone agreeses that gun-running sting went back, letting mexican gangs walk away with 2,000 assault weapons. when u.s. border patrol agent brian terry was murdered in 2010 in arizona, two of the guns were found at the scene. >> the terry family is still searching for answers. >> who knew about fast and fewerual? when did they know about it?

and high high up did it go? >> house republicans had suspected that attorney general eric holder knew and covered up. now they say they suspect president obama. >> what in the world is he exerting executive privilege for? he's part of it or he's not. >> the president is declaring privileged off-limits internal documents on fast and furious, the kind used in criminal cases and often withheld from congress. holder's given republicans 7,600 documents. he offered a partial release of the rest last night. >> i think the ball is in their court. he rejected what i thought was an extraordinary offer on our part. >> republicans move to cite holder for contempt. >> i hope we have the guts and perseverance to get to the bottom of this. >> reporter: democrats charge it's not good guts or guns or cover-up. it's politics. >> it shouldn't be a political witchhunt against the attorney general of our country and our president in an election year.

>> i want to direct features down the road. this is an idea that just came up. i'm watching television action watching everybody rap, play with it, the weatherman is rapping. do people really know where it comes from? you're in a generation that rap was here since they've been born. it happened while i was alive, but it's been here their whole life, but i don't think a lot of people really know the origin of it, and when you don't know the origin of something, you won't have as much respect for it, as i feel. it is an art form, born in the south bronx, it was a youth movement, and now it's part of a global fabric. so i wanted to explain that. >> you mentioned "law & order." you've been on -- >> 13 years. >> you're a fixture. how do you explain your success and longevity. >> law & order franchise is like an american staple. people that watch it are fanatics about it. they've got to watch it. they watch it all day. >> rerinse. >> marathons. how many people get to start in

that's outstate dated. you can't take it to the schoolroom and give it to the camp people. in order to do that, you've got to see us. the reason is so that we can update those prescriptions. in some of the most common prescriptions i write, for instance, maybe your kid's weight has changed. their age may have been changed, so maybe a different formulation, a pill instead of a liquid maybe, or maybe they can use an inhaler than a anybody li neb lieser. >> these would be problems you may have dealt with all year long that you don't just drag them on into the camp setting. food allergy, do you still have it? the xhos common 2350d already is milk, maybe you've outgrown it. there's new testing for pea knit, asthma may have been another one. you don't need to stay on those

medications anymore. we like to apply the goal -- goldilocks rule. >> you should tie up the loose ends rolling around in your head. if you think maybe my kid is allergic to penicillin, don't send them to camp without knowing that. don't make the camp deal with how to deal with a penicillin allergy if they don't have it, come in, let's get test and find out. same thing with bee stings. if you think your kid have an allergy, find out. it's very easy to get tested. we'll know if we need to worry about it while they're in camp. don't is send them off thinking i'm not quite sure. and immunization updated? >> this is a big one. we've seen a lot about whooping cough, an immunization relatively new to have a booster shot for.

. teach your kids the tricks of prevention. >> prevention. so there are certain things you know are going to happen. for example, they get swimmer's ear. so why don't we start with trying to avoid that. thing like alcohol in the year, if they get bug bites a whole lot, let's avoid those. be on the look out for a bug bite gets infected and now that's not an allergy. if they always come back from a certain sleep-away camp and they get a sinus infection, maybe there's mold exposure, what can we do to prevent that before they go? >> lice? >> lice is another big one. if they're always coming home with lice, send them with the lice treatment this time and make sure they're always careful of where their head is touching. >> and not sharing combs and brushes. and know the basics of safe. >> go through them again, especially on days like today, what does heatstroke look like and dehydration. talk to them about good high

boy, it is tough and rough out there. it feels like triple digits, depending on wherer. >> and we have triple digits when you factor in the humidity. the heat index is what we're talking about. we are not used to this heat. our highest temperature prior to today was 92 degrees. today, of course, we hit 97. and take a look at the record

temperatures for the next couple days. today's report, 99, so close to it today. i do think that tomorrow we will tie the record, perhaps even shatter the record set in 1988, and friday the record, so we'll see temperatures start to drop a bit on friday with more clouds, and the potential of some showers and even some thunderstorms, but for sure some dangerous heat out there, 97 right now, that northeast wind at 5 miles per hour. the dew point temperatures at 65 degrees. it's been as high as 70 degrees today. one of the reason why that heat indecent shot up quickly after the noon hour. up toward areas like middleburg, the heat index 98. in kettering, the heat index now at 98. wood democrat bridge and point royal feel like 103. so just reminder, remember to

dress in lightweight and light-colored clothing, drink plenty of water, and of course do not go for the caffeine. take the shades in the breaks as frequently as possible. and check on the elderly and the frail when you can. as far as the heat index here, our values, the highest for the entire nation right there in d.c., and also in boston, look at these heat index values. 100 here, 101 in boston, so right here is the heat, it's finally arrived, right? warm even terms drops to 86 degrees. just a few clouds out there. once again tomorrow the temperatures will be warming fast. we're going to be jumping up quickly. it will take humid and muggy overnight. we'll get some clouds and have, again, some report heat coming our way for tomorrow, more of those isolated showers and storms well west of the area. then friday is looking stormy, with finally that front coming

it's been very hot, humid and hazy today. i told you earlier that our highest temperature so far this year was 92 degrees. of course we are much higher than that today, and especially when you factor in the heat index, and take a look at that. today we've been over 100 degrees here, our highest heat index value around the mid-atlantic, and what it feels like, meanwhile, against outside we've been again those hazy conditions as far as your forecast goes for the overnight period. we're going to get temperatures drop to 86 degrees, so it will be plenty warm. tomorrow morning we're warming fast at 78 to 71 degrees down to our south and west. we'll be mostly clear, and then the asp high for tomorrow back on up, folks, to 96, to about 98 degrees. it's very oppressive tomorrow. this will be some of the highest temperatures we have seen for the entire year in quite some

the makers of hebrew national are fighting back against claims. 11 people filed a lawsuit back in march saying conagra foods charges a premium price, but does not follow proper procedures. conagra says there's close rabin cal supervision, in order for meat to be considered kosher, the animal has to be healthy and clean. nearly three years after the death of michael jackson, the other four founding members of jackson five are said to hit the
