11:00 am
good morning, everyone. welcome to "news 4 midday." it is thursday, june 21st, 2012. a second day of dangerous heat. temperatures have already reached the 90s in much of our area and that had these people wasting no time jumping into a refresing swimming pool. the pool opened at 6:00 this morning. taking a live look outside now at the skies, hazy, hot and humid out there and 100 degrees is what we're expecting tom kierein joins us with the first forecast. are we there yet, tom? >> we are getting there. already now at reagan national now, just past 11:00 in the
11:01 am
morning, it is 94 degrees. by dangerous heat, we mean there is a risk of getting heat stroke or heat exhaustion. those are serious medical conditions, if you overert in this kind of heat and humidity. already near 90 throughout much of the region and baltimore up to 94 and we have hardly any wind at all, so, there's hardly any breeze off the bay. easton 93 degrees. when you factor in the humidity, this is what it feels like, 98 is the heat index in washington. laplata, 99. the heat index in frederick, 105. aberdeen is at 102. easton the heat index with high hew nidumidity is at 103. that is what it feels like right now. this is serious heat that you have to respect. do what you can. you don't have to be outside. stay inside, stay in the ac for the rest of the day and afternoon highs reaching near 100 degrees by midafternoon,
11:02 am
that heat index well over 100 degrees from now all the way now through the rest of the afternoon into early evening. a break coming our way, the latest on that with your seven-day outlook in ten minutes or so. barbara? >> we're ready for one already, thanks a lot, tom. well, many of you will no doubt spend the day inside trying to stay cool, but for those who have to go out, staying safe in this dangerous heat is going to be the priority. news 4 megan mcgrath is at the landon school where kids add a lacrosse camp are trying to keep cool. megan? >> that's a difficult thing to do. keep cool on a day like this. if you look behind me here, you can see the kids actually back out on the field. they were off for quite a while hanging out in the shade, taking a water break. but you can see they're back at it here today and what a scorcher we have. we started to see those temperatures rise really right after the sun went up this morning. now, if you are going out today, keep in mind that this is
11:03 am
dangerous, potentially deadly heat and you really do have to take some precautions. things began to heat up early this morning. at 6:30, it was already in the upper 70s and humid. while many hurried to their air conditioned offices, others snuck in a morning jog. >> it's a little bit harder, so we made sure to get up earlier than we normally do because it's bearable until the sun comes up. but not really a breeze today. little bit cooler when we got down to the river, though. >> reporter: with temperatures nearing 100, today may be one for the record books. factor in the humidity and things look even worse. it's going to feel like 105 and that's potentially deadly heat. >> get water if you haven't got water. >> reporter: at landon school, they're taking extra precautions with their lacrosse camp kids. they're taking water breaks every 15 minutes and they've also cut down on the gear they're wearing and taking advantage of the shade. >> utilize the shaded area. you know, behind you there we have two groups in the corner where it's nice and shaded and
11:04 am
cool and on the track and then we'll try and get the kids that are not in the shade to the water as fast as possible. >> reporter: but there isn't much shade for these brick layers. their day promises to be a brutal one. >> it's hot, but a lot of times you try not to think about it, just go with the flow. try to stay as cool as possible. >> just go with the flow and drink water all day. that's that guy's plan. he has an eight-hour shift to get through. you can imagine how uncomfortable he and his colleagues must be. here at the landon school, this camp is wrapping it up at noon today. they have just a little while longer to go. a scorcher out here and folks really do need to be careful. reporting live in bethesda, megan mcgrath. >> several pools in the region could help you beat the heat today. keeping several pools open well into the nighttime hours. alexandria extended hours at a number of its pools today, as
11:05 am
well. also because of the heat, metro is relaxing its own no drinks policy. riders can bring bottled water only on trains and buses today. the no drinks policy goes back into effect tomorrow, we understand. and we'll check on the midday traffic now and danella sealock joining us with the latest. what does it look like? >> take the outer loop of the beltway. a couple problems for you, first of all, an accident at georgetown pike but good news it moved to the shoulder lane and still able to get by but you're seeing delays. once you pass this accident and get to route 7 leesburg pike the right lane is blocked by the road work there. check out the delays as you pass over the american legion bridge. really, really, really slow and, again, you're going to be slow as you make your way towards the dulles toll road. if you're taking metro today, you can bring a bottle of water with you on the mote row train or metro bus. good news is, no delays on the
11:06 am
metro right now. barbara, back over to you. >> thank you so much. we'll see you in a few minutes. following a developing story on the george mason university campus where dozens of students have been sick with symptoms of food poisoning. at least seven students had to be taken to the hospital. derek ward is live on the campus there. tell us what's going on. >> well, we're here and this incident actually started in the early morning hours. i want you to take a look behind me here. you can still see emergency equipment here on the scene and we want to show you what it looked like here earlier this morning. now, this involved some 80 students from all over the world. they're here for congressional awards foundation program and they're actually staying on the campus. now, at about 1:00 a.m. they started displaying symptoms that seemed to be like food poisoning, like those associated with food poisoning. some of them started displaying these symptoms while they were still in the district yesterday. now, we hear more about what happened with the emergency response here from the city of fairfax fire chief. >> regionally they thought it
11:07 am
might be related to the heat and dehydration they're experiencing. they started to show more signs of stomach-type virus or illness, if you will. last night when they were in washington, a number of students were taken to gw hospital, i don't know that exact number. but then they're staying here at george mason university on campus and some of them overnight last night and this morning continued to feel ill. >> now, this involved a group of students, most of them range from 15 to 22 years old. and, as you said, seven students were transported to an area hospital for observation and others were treated here, hydrated and some were provided with ivs. now, i talked to some of the students who were leaving the program and said they're going to continue their day sightseeing, but unclear at this point whether this started where something this group of students ate while they're in the district or something here with the symptoms starting to display themselves in d.c., it appears it's something to do with
11:08 am
something they ate there and the investigators and health department out here and what have you, they're looking into these students, where they've been for the past 24 hours or so to see if they can get to the source of this illness. that's where we are now. live on george mason, derek ward, news 4. >> thank you, derek. and new this morning an investigation becoming all too comen for d.c. police. officers are searching for two men who robbed a man for his cell phone. but this time, the victim was shot in the face. the robbery happened in the 1300 block of g street in northeast washington. news 4 melissa mollet has more on this case. >> a man in northeast shot after giving two robbers exactly what they were after, his iphone. wednesday night, 11:30 in the 1300 block of g street. a man is walking along the road when he's approached by two armed men. they pull out a gun and demand his iphone. the victim complies handing it over, but they still shoot him in the face. >> it was terrible.
11:09 am
just for an iphone? >> the victim was taken to the hospital and he's listed in stable condition. >> caught in a situation like that, you have to do whatever you can do to kind of make it out alive and it sounds like he felt like he did that. >> reporter: the city, like many others around the country have seen a spike in cell phone thefts. d.c. police chief cathy lanier has been outspoken on cracking down on those stolen phones asking service providers to provide technology to disable phones after being reported stolen. so far no arrests made in this case and the suspects could be charged with assault with intent to kill and robbery. >> whether they took her iphone and whether they took $100, they don't care what it is. just to take something from someone that doesn't belong to them. >> reporter: this is the second high-profile shooting in the area in a week. last thursday, 64-year-old june lin was found shot to death inside her northeast deli at seventh and h streets. police are still searching for a suspect in that case, as well.
11:10 am
