off a little on the potomac. and speaking of cooling, trying to make repairs to get the ac back on for people living on capitol hill. good afternoon. i'm barbara harrison in for john handley. >> i'm pat lawsing muse. we're going to go outside. are we going to break a record? how long will it stick around? remember loan ka johnson has some answers. >> hey there, guys. ga another sizzler. this is day 2, with some extremely high heat. very high humidity. we did hit a high of 98 degrees. most locations, but the neighborhood's maxed on the reagan national getting up to 98 degrees and tied the record held since 1988. again, a lot of neighborhoods just as high. we've cooled somewhat throughout the area. look at the temperatures right now, 91 degrees, in gaithersburg, our friends in baltimore at 98, annapolis a

little cooler, but 99 in easton right now. 95 degrees still, and we're going to be holding with some pretty high heat with the next couple hours. as far as the heat index hour, when you factor in the moisture in the area, a lot of neighborhoods just shy of 100, but two hours ago that heed index value, so many locations was over 100. the heat advisory does continue until 10:00 p.m. for all these counties shaded in orange. that again is most of our viewing area. cooling showers and storms, not around here. those are west of i-81. those are building. that really will be the big story tomorrow. the fact we'll get this heat out of hire, the grungy, sticky, hot stuff, but it will come with powerful storms moving through. that's what we have to talk about later, the fact we had see severe weather here tomorrow. but for your evening hours, 5:00, 7:00, 9:00, just more heat

around the area, and very light winds. we'll talk more in a couple minutes. thanks, veronica. >> feels like a sauna out there. kids are taking extra breaks as they participate in sports camps early in the morning. >> news4's megan mcgrath has more on this heat wave. >> reporter: things began to heat up early this morning. at 6:30 it was already in the upper 70s and humid. while many hurried to their air-conditioned offices, others snuck in a morning jog. >> it's a little harder, so we made sure to get up earlier than we usually do. it's bearable until the sun comes up. alternates bit cooler when we got down to the river, though. >> reporter: with temperatures nearing 100, today may be one for the record books. factor in the humidity, things look even worse. it's going to feel like 105. that's potential deadly heat.

>> get water if you don't have water. >> reporter: they're taking extra precautions, they're taking breaks, and cut down on the gear and taking advantage of the shade. >> utilize the shaded area. we have two groups in the corner where it's nice and shaded and cool and on the track. we'll try to get the kids not in the shade to the water as fast as possible. >> reporter: but there isn't much shade for these brick layers. their day promises to be a brutal one. >> it's hot, but a lot of times we try not to think about it, just go with the flow, try to stay as cool as possible. >> reporter: if you do having to outside today, it is critical that you drink a lot of water, avoid alcohol, and of course take breaks inside in air-conditioned spaces as often as you can. in bethesda, megan mcgrath, news4. you'll have plenty of time to cool off in area pools. d.c.'s department of parks and rec is keeping several pools

open well into the evening. campaignedia is extending pool hour around the county today. now to a developing story we've been following all day. dozens of students mysteriously got sick on the campus of george mason university. more than 40 students aged 15 to 22 got sick between last night and this morning. they're at george mason as part of a congressional awards program. some had to be taken to the hospital. the health department is still trying to figure out what made them sick. before closing arguments, the judge threw out three charges, leaving four dozen for the jury on to consider. sandusky is accused of sexually abusing ten polys. brian moore has the latest. >> reporter: in closing arguments at the jerry sandusky

sex abuse trial, the former coach was portrayed as a victim, by the prosecution as a predatory pedophile. the prosecutor showed photos of the eight accusers as children and said that's what this case is all about. then he showed a photo of sandusky and said that's the person who did it. drawing from seven days of temperature mccget i gan, joe amman doleda contrasted it, portraying sandusky as a victim of police officers who coached testimony and accusers looking to cash in. as he poked as weaknesses in the prosecution's case, amendola repeated, it doesn't make sense. why didn't graduate student mike mcqueary call police if he really saw sandusky having sex

with a young boy? how could the accusers spent as much time as they claimed with such a busy coach and without running into each other? why, amendola asked, didn't sandusky's wife or family see anything? in fact, nbc news is reporting that the prosecution had planned to call jerry sandusky's adopted son, matt sandusky as a rebuttal witness to deliver what is described as damaging testimony if sandusky took the stand. before coming to court sandusky spent time with a psychologist who testified in his defense. bellefonte, pennsylvania, news4. the defense team released new information about the night that zimmerman shot tray von martin. it's part of an interview with a specialist doing a computer voice stress analysis. in it zimmerman describes what led him to shooting the unarmond team in florida. >> i have reached in my pocket. i was looking for my phone, and

he just punched me in the nose. i fell backwards to the side, somehow i ended up on my back. he ended up on top of me, and he just kept punching my face and my head. i was screaming for help. >> zimmerman is charged with second-degree murder in this case. he says he shot martin in self-defense. president obama shook up the presidential race last week with a bold new policy on immigration. today mitt romney unveiled his own version of reform, as steve handelsman reports, romney's plan is not likely to win a latino majority in some key states. >> reporter: in florida, where the hispanic vote could make the difference, mitt romney indicated he would end the week-old obama version of the d.r.e.a.m. act, to let young undocumented migrants to stay in the us and study and work.

the after math of a strong typhoon led for the formation of a very unusual cloud near mt. fuj ir. video was taken yesterday in japan. experts say strong winds after the storm probably caused the phenomenon. the rare sighting only lasted for about 30 minutes, an overcast sky rolled in and caused the cloud to disappear. i say it looks like a stack of pancakes. where's the butter and syrup? the water doesn't met with your eyes at all. i started my day with a good laugh. somebody tweeted, hey, i heard a rumor it's hot outside. >> really? that started early, too. >> when it's this bad outside, you just have to laugh and go with it. >> i wonder where you heard that. >> just go with it like those kids. for tomorrow some nasty storms will be plowing through here. that will announce the arrival of our cooler air. we're at 96, your wind out of the northeast at 6 miles per hour right now, so that wind today has been very, very light. the dew point temperature is at 64 degrees right now, but still high enough to give us all these readings, so many locations, right near 100 degrees. leesburg and over toward la plata, kettering close to 99, hughesville, close to 99 degrees at this hour. about two hours i looks at the numbers for the whole nations,

we had the highest value. right now, take a look, 98 degrees, 99 in raleigh, then you have to go all the way to phoenix for 103. hottest air in the nation pretty much across the mid-atlantic states and the northeast. but again it will be coming on gown. you can see the storms around grand raps, chicago, south there just shy of little rock. that's the front that will be coming through our area tomorrow. for this afternoon and this evening, we have a few showers and storms making their way north and northeastward just west of i-81. la ray about ready to get a few showers, winchester too, but the bulk of this will stay west of the county as well's culpepper county. your forecast then for the overnight, 9:00, 11:00 p.m. as

far as those storms go, about 2:00 p.m. tomorrow afternoon and between 8:00 p.m., the front moves there the whole area here, philadelphia, new york city, down south, the threat of damaging wind gusts and about 7 to about 8:00 p.m. and for tomorrow afternoon, you know, i'd like to say it's going to be much cooler but it's not. 90 to 95. some showers probably already starting off about noontime. the weekend 88 to 89 degrees, and next week in a couple minutes, chug looking pretty darn nice. >> all right. >> good to hear that.

students came down with virus-like symptoms between last night and this morning. they're staying on campus as part of a congressional awards foundation program. commerce secretary john bryson resigned today. he's been on medical leave for nearly two weeks since suffering a seizure that may have led to two car accidents in california. acting commerce secretary rebecca blank has been haileding -- that led to the dow's second-worst drop this year. 69s closed at 12y 573. the nasdaq is off 71 points and the s&p 500 lost 30 points. his birth set out of jubilant celebrations and millions watch him get married. he's celebrating this milestone with a low-key party with his wife. >> he turned 30 today, this birthday brought a final gift from his late mother diana.

quietly. reportedly kate has planned a bim dinner, but on this milestone, for william also comes a fortune. the remainder of diana's estate said aside for him, said to total around $10 million after taxes. the palace won't say exactly how much prince william will inherit today. some estimates put it as high as $15 million. prince harry will receive the same amount when he turns 30. this is princess diana's final gifts to their sons as they say good-bye to their 20s. back to you. michel kosinski reporting there. a florida home is being swallowed by at giant sinkhole that opened up underneath it. the house is already split in half and another nearby home is in danger. the sinkhole formed wednesday afternoon in a neighborhood in hudson in the tampa bay area. city officials say the hole is the size of a two-car garage. some neighbors were forced to evacuate as a precaution,

fortunately no one was inside the home when it was damaged by that sinkhole. there is a bittersweet update to a story we reported yesterday about a lost wedding ring in california. a few weeks ago, steve and shannon callahan found the ring beneath the seat of the used pontiac grand am that they had just bought. they were determined to find the owner, but they kept running into dead ends. finally they used the car's service records to track down the garage that the previous owner used to service the car. it turns out he died back in february. bus his widow says she's grateful to have her husband's ring back. she says her husband lost the ring about five years ago, and she thought it was gone forever. she's planning now to give it to their son as a keepsake. the new blackberry smartphone will be later this year. one feature may disappoint. it will not have a physical keyboard. however, research in motion, the

some storms move through. as we get ready to move on out of here. let's look at them, over around green belt, and on up toward laurel. for bluement, for gainesville, about 92. woodbridge down south at 97 degrees, currently some high heat. we do have a few showers and storms right now. you can see them on storm 4 radar. moving right up i-81. and thunderstorms, yeah, there's some lightning around petersburg. our big chance is tomorrow. 85 degrees by 11:00 p.m. and tomorrow morning we'll be starting off mostly clear,

partly cloudy. once again warming fast. 94, 95, 96 degrees. plenty hose and sticky again tomorrow. our best chance will come after 2:00 p.m. tomorrow. even about the noon hour tomorrow there will be showers forming. and best chance for those -- wince to the area as well as some downpours. let as take a look at those numbers. 84 to 78 degrees, so cooling off by sunday, a few pop-up showers and storms at the beach. here again our weekend looks dry, less human. and next -- under 80 degrees. nice and comfortable.

that's what we get after these days of high heat. >> we pay the price, huh? >> thanks, veronica. eating disorders are often associated with teenager girls, but new research finds that issue with body image have no age limit. nbc's erica edwards explains. >> reporter: women over age 50 make up a growing group suffering from eating disorders and a distorted view of their own bodies. >> over the past ten years there's been this demographic shift. is prevalent, is as high or higher. >> 3.5% endorsed binge eating. >> reporter: and more than half thought about their weight and shape interfered with their life and happiness.

56-year-old janis bremer of california continues to battle eating disorder issues. she was first diagnosed with anorexia at age 17. >> over the course of two years i lost half my weight. >> she runs an advocacy group and says older women tend to feel uncomfortable for seeking help for what many view as a young person's disease. >> a lot of them are embarrassed. >> reporter: many treatments have been doled for teen girls. >> so we don't know how best to tailor these treatment for women over 50. >> reporter: experts say part of the problem is the 70 is the new 50 movement. >> i think part of what's happening is the pressure is on women of all ages toe continue looking young and attractive are contemplates. >> reporter: erica edwards, nbc news. coming up on news4, a panda gets primed to start mating season. plus why a whole bunch of

last week hundreds of first-responders raced to help the victims of a yacht explosion near new york city. the call turned out to be a hoch. now the coast guard says there are suspicious similarities to another case in another state. here's katherine creag. >> reporter: two different calls made on different days have investigators listening closely. are they from the same person? >> in both cases, the voice was similar and had a similar
