state assistant football coach is now in the hands of the jury. he's accused of sexually assaulting 10 boys over a 15-year period. plus a bombshell. the reason jerry sandusky's son was ready to testify for the prosecution, he says he, too, was molested by sandusky when he was a foster child in that home. it is something the 33-year-old denied until now. nbc's national correspondent michael isikoff has been covering the trial and joins us now. michael, what have you learned about what jerry sandusky's son was prepared to testify for the prosecution? >> reporter: good morning, ann. what we do know, matt sandusky was actually in the courtroom in the trial sitting as a supporter of his father. then he listens to the testimony of victim four, the first witness in the case who describes a shower scene with both him, jerry sandusky and matt sandusky and matt sandusky

becomes nervous during that shower scene. something registered, something clicked with matt sandusky, because right after that he contacted a lawyer who contacts prosecutors to say, yes, information relevant to the case and is willing to testify on behalf of the prosecution. an extraordinary turnaround. so initially it was more what matt sandusky witnessed, what he saw. then yesterday we get this statement from the lawyer saying that he's representing matt sandusky as a, quote, victim of jerry sandusky's abuse, so he's going further. what precisely that abuse was, we still don't know, because obviously he didn't testify. but clearly matt sandusky having lived in that home for so many years knows a lot, witnessed a lot, could be a very crucial witness. >> you talk about this, but the jury presumably has not heard about any of this.

what legal impact could this new allegation have, michael? >> reporter: well, look, immediately none. not on this case because he never testified. but for starters, if for any reason there's a deadlocked jury here and there has to be a retrial, clearly matt sandusky would be a major witness in any retrial. then again, beyond that there's civil suits down the road, endlessly, having the son testify against the father would be powerful evidence, powerful witness for the civil lawyers. and there's ongoing investigations, both at the state and federal level into jerry sandusky, the relationship with second mile, with penn state university. matt sandusky lived in the home for all those years and could provide very valuable testimony in those inquiries. >> all right. a dramatic new development in this case. michael isikoff, thank you so much. it is now 7:04. now, here is matt. >> ann, thank you. one person who has been

following the sandusky case very closely is a man named travis weaver. weaver is the first alleged victim to come forward and tell his story on television. he wasn't a witness in the current trial but he did testify in a grand jury. he sat down with kate snow for a rock center exclusive. kate joins us this morning. kate, how are you? >> reporter: good morning. travis struggles telling what happened to him. in a lengthy interview he said sandusky abused him over 100 times over four years starting in 1992 when he was just four years old. >> if jerry sandusky was sitting right here. >> i would punch him in his mouth. >> would you say anything first? >> no. there would be no reason to say anything. he knows what he did. i know what he did. >> travis weaver said he thought he was the only one with a story about jerry sandusky until he saw sandusky on the news arrested on charges he molested other boys. weaver, now 30, had never told a

soul. but last fall he told his family his story for the first time. he says he still feels numb. >> you don't cry about it now? >> no. >> when is the last time you cried about it? >> a long time ago. >> weaver says he first met jerry sandusky through the second mile charity as a 10-year-old in a 9 1992. he said sandusky immediately took an interest in him, taking him to football games, inviting him to work out at the gym at penn state campus and to sleepovers at the sandusky home. >> i stayed at his house probably over 100 times. >> after dottie sandusky cooked dinner for everyone, weaver says he would go down to the basement and wait, knowing that as soon as the rest of the family went to bed, sandusky would come down. >> you know, he'd come down and talk to me, try to play a video game a little bit or play pool or something. you know, he'd work his way up to it. >> and you'd know he was going

to expect sexual acts. >> yes. >> why do you think his family thought you were there? >> i don't know. i never asked. >> did they treat you like one of the family? >> the rest of the kids did. but dottie, i don't think she really liked me too much. she was always like distant. she didn't really want to talk to me too much. i always thought she was a mean person just because of how she acted towards me. she never really wanted to talk to me. when she did talk to me, she was just real stern with everything i said to her. >> cold? >> cold, yes. >> did she ever walk in on you, see anything inappropriate? >> no. no, she didn't. >> do you think she had any idea what was going on, in your opinion? >> i can't say for sure, but i mean, how could you not know

something was going on. >> it's almost an unbelievable story. >> yeah. i was scared to say anything. >> because you thought no one would believe you. >> yes. >> was this a guy, in your opinion -- a guy who thought he would never get caught? >> yes. yes. i don't think the thought ever even crossed his mind. >> weaver is now suing sandusky, second mile, and penn tate university. >> one of the things jerry sandusky's attorney has said again and again is that he believes people came forward later in order to cash in. >> that's ridiculous. why would all these kids that never even met each other all have the similar, if not the exact same story about what he did and go in court and go to trial and testify in front of

all these people about all this stuff that happened if it never happened. it's absurd. >> what his lawsuit really is about, weaver says, is finally finding his voice. you're speaking out, you said to me, because you want other kids out there to know it's okay to speak out. >> yes, it is okay to speak out. >> this stuff is really uncomfortable to talk about? >> it's extremely uncomfortable. feel better once you start talking about it to people, letting everybody know what happened. >> people are going to feel for you deeply when they hear your story. they are going to want to know you're okay now, that you're getting help. can you be okay? >> yeah. i'll be okay when he's in prison. >> again, weaver has been talking to authorities since last fall. he was not called as a witness in the current trial in pennsylvania. instead he's part of a group of men who came forward more

recently. they are sort of waiting in the wings ready to testify in court if this current criminal trial does not end up in a guilty verdict. jerry sandusky's attorney in state college, by the way, matt, had no comment, nor did the attorneys -- we weren't able to reach the attorneys representing jerry sandusky in the civil case with travis weaver. >> before you go. we hear matt sandusky, the first foster child and then adopted child of jerry sandusky was prepared to tell the story of abuse. there was a possibility that jerry sandusky might want to adopt travis weaver. >> in fact he asked travis weaver's father, and his father verifies this, he asked to adopt travis weaver after years of abuse, asked to adopt him. so there may be parallel there. >> kate snow, thanks very much. now to ann. thanks. now to the latest on george simds-of- zimmerman, the florida native charged in the shooting death of unarmed teenager trayvon martin.

evidence released in the case, both sides speaking out. kerry sanders has more from sanford, florida. good morning to you. >> reporter: good morning. they are pouring over the audiotape, which includes a re-enactment by george zimmerman the night he shot trayvon martin. what do they reveal? for the last 24 hours, the re-enactment video has been viewed, dissected. depending on who is reviewing the 19-minute re-enactment, it's either proof the neighborhood watch captain did nothing wrong. >> it's the story on the videos, which he was doing what he thought he should do that night prosecutor off proof of nothing at all. >> trayvon martin isn't here to tell his version of what happened. we've got george zimmerman version and objective evidence. objective evidence shouldoit

weigh that. >> reporter: the day he shot and killed trayvon martin, police brought him back to the scene, with bandages visible on the nose and the back of his head, zimmerman told investigators he told martin, first in his car, then on foot, until he lost the teenager. then without warning, they were face-to-face. >> said you've got a problem? i turned around and said, i don't have a problem, man. >> reporter: zimmerman told investigators martin approached him and punched him in the face and got on top of him and started smashing his head on the sidewalk. >> i thought my head was going to explode and i thought i was going to lose consciousness. >> reporter: zimmerman said as he struggled to get free, martin spotted this 9 millimeter pistol on his right hip. >> looked at it and said you're google to die tonight [ bleep ]. he reached for it. i saw his hand going down to my side. i reached for the firemen and

shot him one time. >> reporter: not just re-enactment, video of him talking to police. a statement written by zimmerman, audio from hours of talking to george zimmerman and challenging. >> as far as 25 and 30 punches, i've consult add lot of people. it's not quite consistent with your injuries. >> reporter: the audio reveals early on the police raised the issue of profile profiling. >> you know you're going to come under a lot of scrutiny over this. the profiling. had this person been white, would you have felt the same way? >> yes. >> okay. gotta ask that. >> like i said, this child has no criminal record whatsoever. good kid. a mild mannered kid. >> reporter: then again a few minutes later. >> you've got problems with black people? >> no. >> okay. had to ask. >> reporter: the defense team says video re-enactment supports self-defense but also

acknowledged there's a long way to go. >> talk about plea negotiations you, we've had none of that yet. >> you say yet. >> i've been doing this for 30 years. i don't think i've ever had a case where somebody doesn't mention plea negotiations. we'll see what happens. >> reporter: george zimmerman remains in jail here at solitary confinement. a hearing for bond is set for next friday. ann. >> all right. kerry sanders this morning. kerry, thanks. it is now 7:14. once again, here is matt. >> all right, ann. thank you very much. it was a video that knaussiated a lot of us, middle school boys brutally taunting an elderly monitor on their school bus. now some of the bullies are saying i'm sorry. nbc's craig melvin in rochester, new york, with more on this. craig, good morning to you. >> reporter: matt, good morning to you as well it has been a whirlwind of a week for her and the boys that harassed her on the bus behind me. crime has gone from victim to spokesperson for civility. the boys have gone from

disgustingly mean to, as you mentioned, saying i'm sorry. >> you don't have a family -- >> reporter: when they were done taunting, cursing and threatening karen klein, one of them online posted it online. more than 2 million have watched the 13 years old bully their 68-year-old bus monitor. now, three of the four boys and their parents are apologizing. in statements released through police, one student writes, "i am so sorry for the way i treated you. when i saw the video i was disgusted and could not believe i did that. i will never treat anyone this way again. a parent says, quote, i would like it if he could do some work for you or help you in some way. i'm embarrassed, angry and sad about the awful way he treated you. the same video that's triggered so much anger and disbelief has

sparked nearly as much compassion and generosity. >> i saw what those kids did to you and it nearly had me in tears. i want you to know how many people are here for you. >> reporter: letters, calls, and flowers have poured in. some of the support is emotional but much of it has been financial. >> never have we seen a campaign raise this much money this quickly in less than 36 hours. >> reporter: more than 21,000 strangers have logged onto indiegogo, a website to raise money for different causes they raised $140,000 to go on a dream vacation and hopefully retire. at a news conference school officials said they were investigating, while they wouldn't give specific promises, strong disciplinary action. police say bullies are being harassed. >> their families, brothers and

and dozens of civilians were taken hostage. afghan police backed by nato troops and helicopters were able to free 40 hostages. a summertime nightmare in indianapolis as a toxic mix of chemicals pumped into a public pool created a type of chlorine gas sending 80 people, mostly children, to a local hospital. official say a pool cleaning chemical was used improperly sickening dozens trying to cool down at the packed pool on a 90 degree day. on washington's mount rainier, a rescue mission ended in tragedy this morning after a climbing ranger died trying to save four injured climbers. nick hall fell 3,000 feet to his death from a mountain trying to reach them. all four of the climbers were eventually rescued. cycling star lance armstrong has until midnight to respond to performance that he used drugs to clinch a title. a panel set to review a written

defense from armstrong and could recommend stripping him of his title and banning him from competition. armstrong has maintained a defiant presence on twitter calling the accusations baseless and unconstitutional suggesting he could respond with a lawsuit. and king james finally has his crown as lebron led miami heat to victory last night in the finals beating the oklahoma city thunder 121-126. james was named finals mvp. it's been a long wait for james to score that championship ring, nine years after he was the nba's number one overall draft pick. of course matt and ann, chris wade, the whole team had a lot to do with that as well. >> a lot of shrieking -- >> your family knows how to celebrate.

michael. i know friends of yours or some people in your life asked you how you could still have a relationship with him, how you could be near him, quite frankly. >> right. >> how do you answer that question? >> the answer for me is that we were in the fire together. we were in the fire. we spent the last night on earth with my three children and mom and dad and it was beautiful. >> there's another reason as well, and it may surprise you. >> i don't believe that the ashes caused the fire, so i don't believe mike is responsible for starting the fire. >> why doesn't she believe the ashes caused the fire? for one thing, she knows the source of that theory. it was her in the hospital on the morning of the fire when she spoke to a city fire official. >> i was begging him, where are my babies?

where are my mom and dad? what has happened? where are my children? he said, well, let me just ask you a question. how do you think the fire was started? i'm like what? like, you know - i said, you know, it must have been the ashes. there must have been embers. it must have been the ashes, because -- >> that's the only thing you could think of at the time, seemed like the logical -- >> i'm not saying it must have been the ashes -- i'm saying it must have been the ashes. i'm literally hysterical. >> do you think that became the entirety of the investigation? do you think they just said, okay, it was those ashes? >> what do you think? >> do you think it could have been something else? >> yes. >> she comes by her scepticism honestly. it's how she was raised. >> we used to call my dad, mr. safety man. >> her father, in retirement a

department store santa, had worked more than 25 years as a corporate safety manager. >> i mean, he changed the batteries in my fire alarms every year for me. he and my mom both were incredibly safety conscious. my mother owned an electrical contracting company in louisville, kentucky. she and i would walk through the house and look at the wiring and go downstairs and look at the electrical boxes. >> they all knew her home in connecticut needed plenty of work. >> the electrical system in the house was from the '40s or something. so i was making that house safe. that's what i thought. >> she says she had the whole house rewired. she installed fire extinguishers and, of course, smoke alarms. and yet -- >> as you woke up choking, madonna, because of the smoke, did you hear smoke detectives, smoke learns, anything going off

in that house? >> no, nothing. it was silent. it was the scariest silence. >> she also wants to know why she saw what she saw after she climbed out of the window. >> i ran to the edge of my house, and i looked down to the left. there i saw a little bit of flame but mostly just sparks, sparks, sparks everywhere coming out of a window. it was in the back right-hand corner. it was near where the electricity goes into the house where the meter is. >> even in her grief, she began to ask questions. >> so how is it that you have a little bit of ashes cause this enormous fire that spreads so quickly with so much smoke that the fire and smoke alarms did not go off? how is it they don't save those alarms? how is it because alarms can be

tested after the fact. that's what you do in a fire investigation. that's what i've been told. >> a forensic investigation. >> exactly. none of those things happened, because nobody knows where any of the pieces are. >> nobody knows, because the day after the fire city officials had her house torn down. >> after the funeral, i had an interview with police. the first question they asked me was why did you have your house torn down. >> and you said? >> i said, i didn't have my horse torn down. what are you talking about? you know. they said, well, we were told you had your house torn down. i was like no. then i asked them if they could help me get anything out of the house, that i wanted to know where my things were that were in the house that might have -- >> been salvageable. >> they said, we'll find out.

so within a three- or four-day period, they brought a bag of stuffed animals, black contractor bag stuffed animals. >> that was it. >> that was it. >> in his official report, the state's attorney concluded the fire was most likely caused by the disposal of fireplace ash. but he also wrote, regrettably the structure was demolished before the state fire marshall's office or any other expert could make an independent examination and determination. the state's attorney decided not to file any charges related to the fire. but madonna badger says she won't stop asking until all her questions are answered. >> is it imperative for you to answer those questions for lily, grace, and sarah and your parents? >> absolutely. to honor them with the truth,

you know. i believe they deserve that. >> and if the truth is a bag of ash from the fireplace caused the house fire, that's okay, too, in terms of an answer? >> absolutely. i have to live with them being gone every single day. the cause of that fire is important for me to know in order to somehow find some peace. >> the city of stamford, connecticut, declined to address specific questions madonna badger raises citing the possibility of future lawsuits. stamford's legal counsel says the actions were consistent with protecting life and property. >> announcer: today's weather brought to you by american cancer society, the official

degree day. the mother of missing american teen natalee holloway is seeing the "national enquirer," beth holloway claimed the tabloid has knowingingly published false headlines about the case in the seven years since their daughter disappeared on a class trip to aruba. holloway was declared legally dead in january. a spokesman for the parent company said he hadn't seen complaints, adding these suits are usually without merit. cycling star lance armstrong has until midnight to respond to charges he used banned drugs to clinch record breaking tour de france titles. a panel of expert set to review a written defense from armstrong and could recommend stripping him of his titles and banning him from competition. armstrong has maintained a defiant presence on twrt calling the accusations baseless and unconstitutional suggesting he could respond with a lawsuit.

murders. the film departed, he made it on the most wanted list. he had been living quietly in a false identity in california. in his apartment a stockpile of weapons and $800,000 in cash. he was arrested, along with his long time companion who fled with him in 1995. last week katherine was sentenced to eight years in prison after pleading guilty to harboring a fugitive and committing i had itd fraud. her sister is speaking out in her defense. she says her sister is not an accomplice but innocent victim of circumstance. >> sixteen years, margaret, why do you think she stayed with him? >> because she loved him. >> your sister met whitey bulger or jimmy as you called him in her late 20s. do you remember what she said when she came home the first time she met prim.

>> she said i met jimmy bulger, i think he's wonderful. i love him. i said you do? she said oh, my goodness, yes. i think he's great. >> you are the one who actually drove her to the meeting where she fled where she would meet the person who took her to him. did she talk about how long she was gone. >> margaret, i'll only be gone three months. just a little trip, i'll be back. it dawned on me she might never be back. >> she was going off with whitey bulger. she told you that. >> yes. >> grew up in boston, i grew up in boston for a while. the name whitey bum ger. you said that name, people stopped. knowing your sister was on the run with him had to be pretty shocking. >> you have to understand, jimmy wasn't just -- we knew him.

he came to my house. he came to my mother's house. he did all kinds of nice things for my family. he was a gentleman at all times with us. >> clearly some people watching now. gentleman yet who is accused of participating in some way in 19 murders. >> yes. >> so this is a dr. jekyll mr. hyde thing. >> i have no idea. i did not think he had done that. i did not think he had murdered 19 people. >> margaret admitted to authorities in the year after her sister fled the two spoke on the phone several times. but she says that was it. the next 15 years, no contact whatsoever. she had absolutely no idea what happened until 2011 with bulger and grieg's capture. >> she said even in hiding her

sister went out of her way to help strangers. >> on occasion she did nice things for people. >> very nice things. >> if they saw a family that didn't have anything, they would drop off clothes and leave. again, dr. jekyll and mr. hyde. >> things normal people wouldn't do. there was a little boy, i forget the town, that was suffering terrible because he had to have glasses. nobody had the money to bring him the glasses. she took him for glasses. >> greig may have been kept in the dark about the specifics of why they were hiding according to richard lane the family's attorney. >> jimmy bulger is not the type of guy that would compare notes with his girlfriend or partner. >> if i was were accused of something, i think if i were to pick up and take off and disappear for 17 years, people would assume i did it. >> if you stayed around and said let's work with this, that's being naive, i think, very much naive. >> i think that the situation of going and hiding, people think,

get it and you're in. ♪ >> this morning on today's kitchen, summer corn on the menu. the restaurant in chicago, the chef is here. he's going to show us how to make a pan roasted cod. he's suddenly wishing he wasn't here. andrew, good to see you. >> nice to see you, too. >> this is the time of year. summer corn is wonderful. >> it is. later in the year we get tomatoes, the beginning of the year we get corn. it's one of the things we look forward to cooking. this kooip time of year it will be at its best. >> we'll make a stock. starting things off, corn off the cob. >> we bought the cob, came with the corn. try to make a stock with that so we have a good base for chowder. simple leeks, carrots, onions,

all the things you'd find in a stock, simmer it 30 minutes until it tastes of corn. we have some bacon. >> very nice. >> i thought you'd like that. >> how much bacon. >> as much as you really want. in this case it was maybe about maybe a quarter pound of bacon before it was rendered. >> the flavor base. >> start the flavor base. we take the bacon out. we have some of the same vegetables we started off with. celery, onions, carrots and leeks. we'll get those sauteing in the bacon fat. >> why would you waste that bacon fat. >> exactly. put those in. take sweet corn as well, pop that in. now you'd want to let this satay probably a good three to five minutes. let it start to soften up. be a good idea to hit it with a little salt and pepper. would you mind getting that. okay. and we'll throw in a little

sprig of thyme and then we're going to add corn stock. >> okay. >> it's good to get the corn stock in fairly early and let it simmer because it will reduce. it's going to bring out a lot of sweetness of the corn and give it a good backbone of flavor. add in potatoes, i like to put in pearl onions because they have more visual impact. >> bacon back in. >> back at the end only because we want to keep the crisp texture. we put it in now, it will be soggy. >> don't want that. how long will we cook this? >> ten minutes until the potatoes are tender. some cream. a cross between manhattan light-style chowder versus creamy new englandstyle. >> nice. >> won't be nearly as you'd expect a new england chowder to be. >> once you put that in, how long would you cook.

>> this and cook another five minutes. at this point add clams. we'll add clams. they will steam open in the broth and give it another layer of flavor. >> back here. >> this the cod. >> could you do it with a different fish you wanted to. >> any kind. i would go with whitefish. we're doing chowder so cod is a natural. >> pan saute. >> yes. if you can get your hands on some nice striped bass would be a great option or you could do it with red snapper or any other whitefish. parsley, bacon back in. you want probably all of it. >> in fact, hold on a second. >> great. >> the more the merrier. i also find this takes a lot of black pepper really well. so be pretty generous with that. >> and it ends up looking something like this. >> ends up looking something like that. >> that is fantastic. >> we brought along another corn option for you.

thing is finding out what you want to do. she knew what she wanted to do. it's a crazy thing but we call it creating a board of directors. you get good friends, current friends, maybe somebody who worked with you and go back to your childhood. sometimes there are dreams you left in your childhood. some for good, some for bad. >> they are there for a reason. >> right. they need to remind you of things you left behind. you put them together and they gave you thoughts about what you left behind. >> you have an interesting story. were you as a young girl wanting to be a performer and then decide to go into police work? >> i think the bug for performing was always in me. police officer was, no. my friend was going to take a test and i said all right. i always went with the flow. >> you were a police officer for years? >> 20 years. >> you did have your pension. when you were trying out the other, the stand-up comedian route, you were okay financially, it was something you had to have courage to do? >> i would have been okay financially if i didn't decide

to open up a business and lose everything. i should have went back to work. i did take a big leap of faith. like you're saying, fear is hard. >> how did you overcome that? a lot of people couldn't do it. >> i just did it. i went and i took a class. you just have to do the scariest thing. >> it wasn't one time you got up on a dare from friends. you went to school forth. good for you. >> i did. >> how did you learn how to be funny? >> that has to come naturally. >> lesley, what are some of the biggest obstacles women face. women do want to make the change. fear is one of them. >> you do have to have money. depending on the situation you're in. what we say is you've got to plan for at least a year of transition. you should have saved a lot of money. >> people don't save these days. >> the other problem, you're a woman. you have a whole network around you, family, sometimes there is resistance to change. i know you the way you are.
