clouds around, temperatures are a bit cooler, but still uncomfortably hot. those areas in red, they are in the 90s and that includes the eastern shore and right near washington, southern maryland, much of virginia. the areas in orange are in the 80s and the yellow areas are 70s and the green areas 60s. and there are a few 60s in east central, part of northern shenandoah valley and around the highlands into east central west virginia. but closer to washington, it's right in the upper 80s now in washington and the nearby suburbs and we've got the high humidity in place and we do have a weak front that is just now drifting into the area and, as a result, it will begin to start triggering some showers and thundershowers. right now getting one little lonely shower in montgomery county right to the east of gathersbering and 370 and getting a few sprinkles there and that is drifting off to the east. a large area, all this in yellow that is under a severe threat.

for three years an informal manorial on the charles langley bridge. you can see the fence behind me here. people have been leaving flowers and stickers, other mementos here ever since this crash happened. well, today, there's going to now be a new and permanent memorial. you can see covered by that cloth there is a plaque that has been bolted to the side of the fence here and, again, a permanent memorial here at this location. this bridge overlooks the tracks where the crash actually happened. now, there are a number of family members of the victims who are here for the ceremony this morning and they say they're glad this finally happened here at this location. a plaque was actually placed inside the in the totum station but family members were not happy about it. they pushed to have the plaque placed at this particular location. this is where the crash happened and this is where they feel most connected to their lost loved one. >> they never made it and it happened right here.

the boy said he asked him to sleep in his bed with him and then forced him to perform sexual acts at least two times. authorities interviewed him earlier this week where he admitted to these accusations. prince george's county police are investigating a shooting involving one of their officers. it happened late last night in the 5600 block of kolb street. police have not released much information, but we do know that one man is taken to the hospital and he is expected, however, to be okay. new tonight, another twist in the controversy over the termination of the university of virginia's president. uva's newly appointed interim president is stepping down from his new post in a letter to the university this morning, he says he's returning to his job as dean of the school of commerce until the issue is resolved. now, it appears the ousted president is about to get her job back. a school's board of visitors will meet on whether to reinstate theresa sullivan. her termination earlier this

gunfight. at least two of the terrorists were killed. a taliban spokesman said the man attacked the hotel because foreigners there were drinking and doing other things banned by islam. some of the world's largest banks still trying to recover fully from the financial crisis have been dealt another setback. moody's has lowered the credit rating for 15 major banks. they include bank of america, jpmorgan chase, citigroup and goldman sachs. the credit downgrade makes it harder by selling debt because investors demand higher interest. this drop may not hurt banks too much, though, because interest rates are already so low. well, the jury in the jerry sandusky sex abuse trial spent more than eight hours deliberating into the evening. today they will listen to mike mcqueary testimony, again. they also want to hear the testimony of dr. jonathan

dranov. this morning, jerry sandusky is facing a new round of accusations. one of his six adopted children, his son, matt, says he was also abused by the former penn state coach. another man also went public on nbc's "rock center." >> i told him if he didn't get off of me, i'd call the police on him. and he just laughed at me and, you know, forced me to stay on the bed. >> travis weaver says he was abused in the penn state locker rooms and sandusky's home, as well. weaver went on to say he'll punch sandusky if he ever sees him, again. weaver is not involved in this case. he has filed a civil suit against sandusky. you'll hear more of weaver's interview on "today" show coming up right here on nbc, later.

actually, it was on "today" show this morning. president obama is on his way to florida as we speak. he left last hour for orlando where he'll try to win @(t&háhp% hispanic voters and the president will speak at the national association of latino elected and official conference. mitt romney met with the same group yesterday. and the president will visit a community college before returning to washington this evening. meanwhile, mitt romney is giving virginiaens a glimpse of what his presidency could be like. >> day one. president romney moves to repeal obama care and tax the deficit, starting with $20 billion in savings. >> his campaign just released this new commercial called first 100 days, virginia. in addition to repealing what he calls obama care, romney says he'll also reverse president obama's ban on offshore drilling, a move he says will create thousands of jobs in virginia. romney's campaign is airing similar commercials and other battleground states, including north carolina and iowa.

and we hear this is the last day of this mini heat wave we have been having. we're ready to celebrate, tom, if that's the case. >> yesterday was a hot one. we got to 99 yesterday afternoon. that did set a new daily record and here we go, again. another day with extreme heat, although not quite as hot as yesterday, but it is still very humid. here is a live view from our nbc 4 hd city camera. you can see that thick, summer haze. right over washington and there is the live view and you can see the monuments there in that haze. 88 at reagan national and dew point at a steamy 67. the humidity now at around 57% and not much relief coming from the wind, only a gentle wind out of the north and west and a weak front that is coming through. now, how do animals keep cool when the heat is bad? well, a lot like humans. look at what they do with the horses at the horse net rescue. look at him, he's getting hosed

down there and he is loving it. is that right, right in my face? that feels so great. want to thank christine hickey who sent that in from mt. aire. here's another way to stay cool if you're a squirrel. look at this squirrel hanging out on the top of a cool iron fence. i bet that does feel nice. samantha dorsy sent this in from her front yard in alexandria, virginia. that's how you keep cool. as we look at temperatures around, you might want to hang out on that fence. right now 88 in washington and upper 80s near 90 and southern maryland and into virginia and shenandoah valley beginning to dry out. little bit of lower humidity beginning to move in there, near 80 degrees there, but we're still in the steam heat around the bay and now near 90 degrees. how does it feel? mid-90s to upper 90s on the eastern shore and that combination of humidity and temperatures and just 91 in washington a lot better than it

was yesterday. we were at 105 for our heat index a lot of yesterday afternoon. this morning, a few sprinkles coming through early this morning, but, now we're beginning to see breaks in the clouds and a lot of sun and eastern shore and that's where it is hotter now and some more clouds over the shenandoah valley and that's why it's a bit cooler, too. showing a developing line of some showers and storms here along the ohio valley. that is what may be moving in later today. one shower in montgomery county and just to the north of silver spring and that's drifting over towards ashland and maryland and crossing over near columbia and howard county over the next half hour or so and this yellow zone, this is a threat zone for severe weather. it's pretty big area covers all of virginia east of i-95, as well as maryland, eastern shore, up towards the northeast near new england and this is for perhaps strong storms with damaging winds, 2:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. today. as we go forward, all these areas in green, these are the zones. probably the prime time we'll get those strong storms.

this is as of 4:00 this afternoon and then as we get into the evening hours, the threat diminishes dramatically and then by dawn on saturday, we'll be clearing out and get sunshine back tomorrow with lower humidity, much more pleasant weather. now, we do need the rain. how much will we get? the areas in green half inch or so and areas in blue half inch or two and perhaps up to our south, we'll get up to an inch. as we get through the rest of the afternoon, we may need an umbremma. probably strong storms developing and we'll hit the low to mid-90s over the next couple of hours and then we'll cool down. evening storms ending around midnight tonight and drop from the 80s early evening and 70s down by midnight and then by dawn tomorrow and then a beautiful weekend to follow, enjoy. lower humidity, cooler weather saturday and sunday and sunday night into sunday, a passing shower or thundershower and then after that, another comfortable pattern coming up. that's the way it looks. how would you rather keep cool?

right now on news 4 midday, a ceremony is going on in d.c. marking three years since the deadly metro crash. nine people died when two trains on the red lines collided near the totten station. revealing a plaque between first and ogelthorp streets. police caught them drinking on the school's roof. melissa mollet has more on what police call a bad decision. >> it was the beginning of the end of their adventure on the roof when security guards spotted the teens on the building early this morning. this is how they got up there by climbing this yellow pipe that snakes around the school and up on the roof. investigateers say the former students that just graduated on wednesday were drinking beer up there. by the time police arrived they came down and were running. police caught seven of them. all were underage, three were

minors. the rooftop celebration turned into this, the students sitting on a curb outside their former school in cuffs answering questions with their black backpacks opened nearby. >> that's what they used to take the alcohol to the rooftop. so, that's what was in the backpacks. >> reporter: one of the students who ran fought with officers. they could all face charges of trespassing, unlawful entry for going up on the roof and underage drinking. the students didn't go inside the school and nothing was vandalized. >> what do you make of all this? >> senioritis. >> bad case of it? >> well, a well-deserved case of it, no doubt. >> reporter: with some staff watching from afar, investigators sent a canine unit inside to see if anyone might have made their way in. police say a few weeks back, someone broke into the school and vandalized a portion of the second floor, now they're trying to figure out if there's a connection if any of these students might have been involved. >> just a poor decision on their

behalf. bring alcohol on school property and drink, especially after recent graduation. you don't want to jeopardize any future education or college and get in trouble with something of this nature. >> we spoke with aural aingten county school officials and they say sometimes kids make bad choices and they're just happy that no one was seriously hurt. d.c. police are searching for a suspect who stabbed a man overnight. investigators say a man walked into the police station on alabama avenue southeast with multiple stab wounds. they searched for a scene of the crime, but couldn't find one. the man was taken to the hospital and there's no word on his condition. a 911 dispatcher in prince george's county helped a father deliver his son at home. let's listen. >> 911. >> my wife is in labor. her water has broken. it's time to go. >> andre johnson called 911 moments after his wife's water broke at their home in hillcrest

heights yesterday. news 4 spoke exclusively to the mother and 911 dace patcher about the dramatic delivery. >> both his father and i were very, very shocked at how fast he came. >> all of a sudden he's like, i see the head, i see the head. you do? i went back into the program and the program talks you through birth and, so, i was trying to calm the father down. >> richard marvin johnson was born 7 pounds, 13 ounces. this morning both richard and his mother are doing just fine. we're waiting to learn more details about a body found in a fairfax county park. police say a man found the body near the hidden oaks nature center around 6:30 last night. police are telling us very little about the incident. they haven't even determined the body's gender, race or age at this time. manassas police need your help finding a man who attacked a woman along a trail. a 21-year-old woman told police a man struck her from behind

while she was walking near seamore road on tuesday night. he knocked her to the ground, but she did manage to get up and fight him off. the man ran away before police got there. the woman gave officers enough of a description for them to create this composite sketch. if you have any idea who this might be, you're asked to contact manassas police. meanwhile, health officials say food poisoning is likely not the reason why several students got sick at george mason university. more than 40 students in a summer program reported symptoms like nausea, stomach pain and headaches. the fairfax county health department says the group likely contacted a viral disease by touching a contaminated surface somewhere. gmu is disinfecting public areas now. let's check in, again, with tom kierein and find out about the end of the heat wave. tom? >> didn't last long, but today, still uncomfortably hot and humid. right now, it is near 90 around the metro area and points south and east of washington, still

steamy humidity, although lower humidity beginning to move into the mountains, and shenandoah valley into maryland where temperatures are around 80 and lower humidity beginning to move closer, too, closer to washington. but look at the heat index, that combination of temperature and humidity is what it feels like. feels like mid and upper 90s across southern maryland and the eastern shore, but not as bad as it was yesterday. as we look at storm 4 radar, we don't have any severe storms and any thunder and lightning and we have one that has been rolling across southeastern montgomery county into howard county now near columbia and that is heading up towards elcaught city and else where just partly sunny sky. later today, this whole yellow zone a severe weather zone and we could get strong storms anywhere in this yellow zone and most of the areas east of i-95 including new england including our region under the threat for producing damaging winds. the prime time does appear mid

metro, too. there will be track work on three lines and on the orange line and there will also be tracking on the red and blue lines and all of that work starts at 10:00 tonight and in addition close at 10:00 on saturday night for a security drill. everything should be back to normal, we're told, by monday morning. let's see how traffic is moving right now. let's check in with danella sealock. what is going on out on the roads? >> still seeing the accident on the beltway and really slowing everybody down and the outer loop of the beltway as you make your way to annapolis road, that is where the crash is. blocking the two left lanes and you're absolutely jammed. look at this road. cars are pretty much just sitting and inching by as traffic on the outer loop. once you pass the accident at 450, things look a lot better. traveling along route 50 think about heading out to the beach, you can do so. that's what you want to do. here's a live look as you make your way and crossing over the

bay bridge, no issues in this area. barbara, back over to you. >> thank you, danella. some of the middle school students who bullied their school bus monitor are apologizing for their actions. >> oh, my god, your glasses are foggy -- >> more than 2 million people have watched this video on youtube of karen klein being ridiculed so severely she was brought to tears. three of the four boys and their parents have already said that they're sorry. one of the boys says he will never treat anyone like that, again. police say those bullies are now being bullied themselves. officers say the boys and their family members have been threatened. as for klein, she has received support from around the world. a fund set up to help send her on a dream vacation and retire has collected more than $400,000. a 9 o-year-old woman is recovering after chasing a man who mugged her.

the crime was caught on camera. a man attacked the woman right outside a convenience store in oakland, california. another man inside the store rushed to help her up and asked if she wanted to go to the hospital or to chase the thief. she chose to go after the thief. the two jumped in a car and found the crook. >> she was my partner. i mean, she was really into the chase with me. i mean, she was not scared at all. >> rob ravelli held the thief in a head lock until police showed up. the 90-year-old woman called him a wonderful fellow for coming to her rescue. what really happened to a kindergarten teacher in orange county, virginia. that is the focus of tonight's "dateline" she was found dead just five miles from her home, an apparent victim of a hit and run. police say little about the accident scene made any sense. >> i'm looking for vehicle debris, any kind of skid marks or anything like that.

>> i have an apple nugget for you, too. kind of interesting. in terms of the stock market recovering a bit after yesterday, which ended up being the second worst selloff of the year. the dow jones industrial average up about 60 points in every magener dex in the green at this hour. moody's cut the credit ratings on 15 very large banks, but most of them are higher today mainly because we've been expecting this downgrade for quite some time. bank of america, citigroup, jpmorgan and morgan stanley. all of them are higher right now. remember gas supposed to be about 5 bucks a gallon right now. about $1.50 below that and now some analysts say we might get $3 gas by halloween. according to aaa fuel gauge report, the national average is $3.45 a gallon. your ipad may be more energy efficient than a light bulb or your refrigerator. it costs just $1.36 a year to

what would you do, be inject under to the brain? >> well, this is part of this phenomenon with stem cells. a recent study shows you can take the skin cells from alzheimer patients and convert them, easily, into stem cells. brain stem cells, reinfuse and, so, you're repopulating these patients' brains with new, healthy brain cells. >> have they had any human tests? >> most of this is in mice and most of this is theoretical, but it's an emerging area that really could point to major breakthrough for alzheimer's disease. >> so, as a scientist, how close do you think we are to solving the problem of dementia and alzheimer's? >> well, again, i don't think this is a solution that this is going to be a way to improve it. again, this is more theoretical. what we can do today or some of the things we talked about, hopefully five, ten years down the line, this will be state of the art treatment. >> well, we always are asking
